The story starts with an accidental run in at the grocery store. Peyton, still grieving over her ex, thinks she sees Kade everywhere and can't seem to get past the pain of his loss. When she runs into Brodie, Kade's younger brother, at the store...she runs. Peyton is 0 for 2 in love. Her ex husband decided he didn't want kids, so he divorced Peyton for a younger model. Then Peyton meets Kade at a wine event. She decides to give love a shot, but is devasted when he doesn't make it back from deployment. Thus breaking his promise. While Peyton wasn't really sure Kade was "the one", she did love him. Every time he had leave, he would spend all of his time with Peyton and her boys. Even though they spent time together, she soon realizes she didn't really "know" Kade.

Brodie has been tasked with giving Peyton a box that Kade wanted her to have if anything should happen to him. When Brodie approaches Peyton with the box, she refuses it. The pain is still too fresh. While trying to decide what to do with the box, Peyton approaches him on the beach. Thus begins the friendship.....

While Brodie loved his brother, he can't help but wish he had met Peyton first. It's love at first sight for Brodie. Now he just has to convince Peyton to give love another shot, while convincing her that their relationship isn't "wrong". While Brodie makes every effort to show Peyton the man he needs her to be, she keeps comparing him to her exes. Will Payton be able to allow herself to love again?

I loved, loved, loved this novel!!! The plot was sooo different from anything I've read. There were many aspects that I could really relate to--single mom, dating, working non-stop to provide for your kiddos, death, step-parenting roles......This novel is the first in the series and does not end with a cliffhanger!!! I can't wait to read about Alex and Maddox. I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.

*** Warning: Small spoilers ***

I just finished this book and I need to take a small break from the emotional roller coaster. I loved this story. It's the story of a few families in the wine industry. But specifically it is the story of Peyton & Brodie. Brodie is the brother of Peyton's ex boyfriend Kade who was killed in the line of duty. He was in the military. She never met Brodie until he tried to give her a box that Kade left to her. She refuses it and the chase begins. It starts out as Brodie wants to fulfill the promise to his brother that it would be delivered to her. But that turns into more for both of them. While they try to fight it, they can't. Peyton has been hurt by the only two men in her life that she has loved. The first is her ex husband Lang who decided he didn't want to be a dad to their two sons. The second is Kade who died and left her in pieces. She soon finds out the love Brodie and her share isn't like the others. He is her true love. But it takes her a while to see that. Miscommunication and almost tragedies get in the way.
This story was so much fun to read. It had me hooked. I just wanted Brodie and Peyton to see what was in front of them. A few times I wanted to reach into the story and shake them. They had me smiling at their warm & loving moments. And even the love scenes were sweet. It showed their bond and care for each other. But this story also had me in tears a few times. Like I said, emotional roller coaster. But it was well worth the ride. And this is the first book in the series. I am excited to continue on.

The storyline was frustrating for me often… First I didn’t like it, then I liked it, then I didn’t like it again, and then I loved it.

I get instant attraction, so I guess I can see that. But, there was no logical detail as to why Brodie had THAT MUCH instant attraction after one conversation? It just didn’t add up. So, this story was instant attraction and instant sex… So, if you’re not into stories with these two issues, you should skip this book.

I struggled with not knowing exactly how old all the main characters were. The story told the difference in sibling ages, so when the detail came as to what age Kade died at and how long ago he died I was able to figure out how old the Butler boys were. I can’t say I like having to do basic math for reading fiction. I really didn’t like that I had no idea how old Peyton was. So, it drove me crazy not knowing if there was an age gap between the H & h. At the end of the book, I STILL DON’T KNOW HOW OLD PEYTON WAS? Did I miss that piece of information while reading?…Ugh!

With all my back and forth with the plot why does this story get five stars from me? Well, at 60% into the story there were some very realistic couple/people emotions. The scene was when Peyton loses her cool over something. It was the most realistic confrontation I’ve read to date. The argument drama was perfect. And, Brodie rushing off to dip his stick into someone to ease his pain, was perfect.

AND MOST OF ALL, I totally love the way the author writes. Flawless dialogue as to who is speaking. That’s extremely hard to find. And for me it’s extremely important.

Excellent Story - Excellent Writing

The Promise is the first in a new series coming from Heather Slade. Peyton was his brothers girlfriend, until he died. Trying to help his mother keep a promise she made to him, younger brother Brodie helps her out and tracks Peyton down. Only Peyton doesn't want what Brodie has to give her, but the sparks fly. As they both try to navigate through feelings of how his dying has left them, their feelings for each other grow. Sometimes it really is as easy as falling in love.
Brodie and Peyton are very likeable characters as are all the supporting characters. I think book 2 will be just as good.

3.5 Stars This is a complicated love affair. Love sometimes feels so right, when it shouldn’t be by society standings. Brodie falls hard and fast with his dead older brother’s girlfriend. Peyton is confused by her feelings and Bodie creates a mess of their relationship. Somehow, love finds a way.
Though this isn’t a real cliffhanger, there is unfinished business I am sure will come up in the next book of the series.

Intriguing

I think the reason they were so afraid of each other is they both knew how much they wanted each other. The mystery continues however because of Peyton's ex-husband. I hope it all works out for them.

When Brodie's Mom tasks him with finding his late brother Kade's girlfriend Peyton, he wasn't looking forward to the task. His mother had made the promise to Kade, and because of that he would find her. Where he actually runs into her is surprising. Of all places he runs into her at the local supermarket. What he didn't expect was her to refuse to accept anything from Kade.

Even her best friend Alex couldn't believe she didn't want any of the memories that would be given to her. The shock of seeing how much Brody looked like Kade was enough in itself.

After that initial run in, Brodie headed to Moonstone beach, a place where he had spent a lot of time with Kade. This time Peyton finds him and apologizes. Yet still refuses to accept what Kade left her.

It seems neither Peyton or Brodie can stop thinking about the other. The question is can this become a relationship?

Peyton has her sons to think of when it comes to introducing a man into her life. Kade's death had affected them just as hard as her.

Aside from Peyton not wanting the box Kade left for her, there is plenty of things going on that are puzzling. Not the least of which is 'Kade' sightings.

Emotional, with laughs and tears and some sizzle as well.

Peyton is devastated about Kade's death, and she's nowhere near ready to think about loving again. Certainly not Kade's brother, Brodie, who is tasked with giving her a box from Kade and finds himself head over heels in love with her. This story is a roller-coaster of emotions as Peyton and Brodie both figure out what to do with their feelings of attraction and love along with grief and guilt.

This is the first of a series of interconnected standalones set in the wine country along California's Central Coast, an area I am very familiar with. The author does an excellent job of portraying the relaxed cowboy/winery lifestyle of the region. I really loved the characters and was sucked into the story from the first page. I'm loving all of the books in this series so far. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

The Promise, book one of the Butler Ranch Series by Heather Slade

I had no idea what to expect from this book as Heather Buchman is a new author to me but the cover is awesome and the blurb caught my interest, so why not. Brodie and Payton captured my attention from the beginning. There is some tragedy to their story and they go through so much before they get their happy ending. My heart was broken, then stomped on, but there were also so many heart-warming moments in this book, not to mention some very steamy love scenes. Ms. Slade had me cheering them on and cringing with every setback...

The characters are amazing and I can't wait to find out more about Payten's best frined Alex and her special man who happens to be Brodie's brother.

All I was supposed to do was give her the box Kade left for her. It had been over a year since my brother died. I had no idea she would rock my world and change it all at the same time. But this couldn't be right, I mean was it too weird? He wasn't Kade. This can't be happening. What is wrong with me that I can't get it right? How can this work?
I don't even know how to explain what this book did to me. The emotions and confusion even the action, and Kade?? It's mind boggling how this author can continue to put out these books that just bleed with emotion and not have the stories all feel the same. Each character touches you in a different way, each book moves you and this one will leave you battling as well and give you a darn good read in the process.

Brodie and Peyton. A good romance with several elements of angst and what ifs. I would recommend reading this book and series in order of the world bc I found this series after reading quite a few of the other series in this K19 world and it kept messing with me as Kade is a huge figure in later books. The ex husband element isn’t addressed so I don’t know if that is an oversight or part of a bigger story. Seeing Laird and Sorcha is a delight and I loved their interactions and seeing more about the vineyards and ranches.

ARC for honest review with no compensation

The Promise by Heather Slade is the first book in the Butler Ranch series and what a way to start this series! ! This is my first book by Heather and you can bet I will be reading more from her…..awesome! !

Brody Butler has been asked by his mother to take a box to his late brother Kade’s girlfriend and though he is still grieving he wants to do what is right…..but….when he meets Peyton things change for him in ways he never thought possible.

Peyton and her sons have lost love then found it again with Kade only to lose again. She has decided to just give up on love and do whatever she can to give her sons the best life possible. When Brody shows up with the box she tells him to leave and take the box with him. But he keeps coming back again and again telling her that this is what Kade would want. Through this push and pull about the box these two find comfort with the grief they share, finding that love might be around the corner and healing they both need.

This story is an emotional roller coaster with lots of tears (mine included), grief and loss for Kade, laughter to brighten their days and finding that for Peyton the third time just might be the charm for her HEA! ! !

Wracked with grief from the unexpected loss of his older brother, Brodie is tasked with delivering his remaining belongings to his girlfriend, Peyton. Expecting to close this tough chapter of their lives, the pair are now forced to contend with their mutual attraction while navigating their grief. Can they overcome their grief and create a life together or will their loyalty to Kade keep them apart?

This book was one heck of a frustrating emotional rollercoaster! Brodie and Peyton had such great chemistry from the beginning but their constant denial and miscommunication kept pushing them apart - much to my dismay. Peyton definitely drove me insane especially when it became apparent that Kade wasn't quite what everyone made him out to be. I loved everything about Brodie and his family which has me excited to get my hands on the rest of the books in this series.

Heartwarming, Family based, Sizzling Romance Read!!

When his eldest brother Kade is killed in action, Brodie is charged with delivering a box of belongings to his brother’s girlfriend. Peyton never met Kade’s family, and thought she was seeing things when Brodie, who resembles Kade, makes an appearance. Peyton fights the attraction to Brodie as she feels it may be due to the resemblance. After a crappy marriage and losing Kade she and her two sons needed to be careful.

The history and background of this entire family is a great read. The building (or not?) of this relationship is a great read. Add in the wine / cowboy aspect and the way the author weaves this story together and you have a real winner! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read more in the series.

A highly emotional read that is bound to touch your heart. The book is well written with nicely developed characters and the story is fantastic. After the death of his brother in Afghanistan, Brodie Butler is given the task of delivering a box to his brother's girlfriend Peyton Walker. Guilt is added to his grief when after meeting Peyton he realizes he is deeply attracted to her. Would pursuing her be wrong? Would she only want to be with him because he reminds of Kade. All questions he deals with while the relationship between him and Peyton develop.

Grab a tissue or two and this book for a relaxing read. I recommend it.

Question
Why does every book review write what the book is about as part of the review? That's what the book description is for, so every single person that reviews it doesn't have to type the exact thing over and over.
Now.
Reading through this book and all the different things that happened. I believe Kade is still alive.
Do all the books end on a cliffhanger?
Don't get me wrong. I'm glad Brodie and Peyton get together. It's just that the story wasn't finished. Her ex all of a sudden wants custody. What happened? Will it be the next book? Or the whole series?
Is this with all the stories? They're not resolved in one book?

Brodie is a fabulous contemporary romance by Heather Slade. This is my first book by Ms. Slade but certainly won't be my last. Brodie is a well-written book and the characters are lovable and fun to read. Brodie is still adjusting to his brother Kade being killed in battle. When he is tasked with delivering a package to Payton, Kade's girlfriend, he's attracted. Payton wants nothing to do with Brodie or the package. Their story is loaded with drama, humor and sexy bits. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Heather Slade soon. Brodie is book 1 of The Butler Ranch Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I was very late to the game with this book as I jumped in with Heather later in her writings. I’m so glad I took the time to go back to the beginning with her. This book was amazing and showed me that Heather was a natural from the very start. A wonderful story full of characters I immediately wanted to get to know better, it was also full of emotion as Brodie and Peyton each dealt with all their feelings surrounding Kade’s death and their growing feelings for each other. Seeing Peyton with her boys and with Alex and Brodie with his brothers broadened the story in a wonderful way and made me look forward to all the future stories in the series.

I loved this boom with a capital L. This was my first book by Slade and I can happily say I am a huge fan. This book was intriguing to say the least. This book will definitely have you in your feels. This book will have you hooked from the first chapter. The story of this book is captivating and has you wanting something similar, just maybe under different circumstances. I know I can say Brodie just moved to the top of my list for book boyfriends. I highly encourage this series for sure. I cannot wait to continue my journey on the Butlers ranch. Highly recommend this author and series. You will not be disappointed.

I received an ARC of this book which I voluntarily reviewed.
I read books. A LOT of books. And every so often you come across a gem! This book had everything in it that I enjoy, a good story, a realistic cast, a little bit of the supernatural and a cracking romance. But there was more! I loved the authors descriptions of the area and was intrigued with the snippets of information about the wine making . And the names of her characters were so fabulous! None of your plain Jane meets John here! But the best bit of all? I have found a brilliant new series to follow!

I love the blurb for this book and was curious to see how things would unfold once Brodie delivered the sealed box to Peyton. What should have been a simple exchange turned into so much more. I enjoyed their emotional, heartfelt story as they struggled with grief, heartbreak, and the promise of new love.

I like the entire Butler family. I hope that Brodie's brothers each get their own book. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Single mom with two boys discovers there is enough love in everyone heart to let others in - a book for a leap of faith!

Let go has two boys and is a single mom making it all work. Brodie is a brother that has to deliver a present to Peyton. Brodie is extremely attracted to Peyton but his brother Kade died a year ago & he was dating Peyton at the time. It just may be an obstacle they can't get around. Lots of action & drama and "family dynamics". V2 S2 more book reviews check out @my2centsbooklover, thanks for sharing likes, comments and more!

Touching

This was a beautiful story about how a brother, Brodie, is trying to deliver a package from his dead brother to his ex girlfriend. His mom asked him to deliver it to Payton. She loved Kade and kept thinking she was seeing him when it was really Brodie. She doesn't want the closeness and he has fallen for her. She is raising her two sons and doesn't want to bring another man into their lives. Their father doesn't have anything to do with them and Kade died.

Enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the characters a lot in this story. I also realized while reading this book, the author has characters that spin off into another of her series. I like when authors do that. The heroine in this story has been emotional hurt by men in different ways but stays strong for her two boys. I loved all the families in this story and look forward to reading more about them.

Ok

I know some people have trust issues or doubt their decisions, but jeez Peyton is really messed up. I am not saying Brodie is spot on but my goodness. To keep pushing away the way she was doing was also hurting her kids. I am also disappointed that the book ended before we found out about the court case with the ex husband. That was crappy. Anyway it was a ok story. I did approve of the hot steamy love scenes. Thank you.

I admit I had a very hard time getting into this book with the first few chapters but glad I stuck with it. This is a very emotional book about the hard path, fraught with misunderstandings, that Brodie and Jess face on their romantic journey. Lots of ups that have you feeling great and downs that make you want to cry with the characters.

loved it

This grabs you by the heart from the first words until the very end. Brodie is asked by his Ma to deliver a bok his brother left for his girlfriend. Brodie wasn't expecting to fall for the girl but fate and a lot of help pushes them together. I loved this book so much, can't wait to see what happens next.
