I like being a PI, but I don't love it. I like my life in Tennessee, but I don't love it. I like the apartment I live in but I don't love it. Basically my life is full of stuff that I can live with or without. With the exception of my mom and my sister, but they have their own lives. When a case takes me to Purdy, Nebraska, I learn about shifters and I meet a man I can't get out of my head. But I'm straight. At least, I think I am. I've never really been too passionate about anyone or anything. Being around Payne and the leap of shifters opens my eyes to the fact that I haven't really been living a life so much as just keeping my heart beating from day to day. Moving to Purdy and starting a new life that involves people and things I actually enjoy being around is my new life goal. But that means moving. Is it a good thing or an absolute disaster that Payne volunteers to tag along and help out?
Payne Brooks
I'm good with disaster. It's familiar. I've watched everyone, including my best friend and partner in distraction find their mate, and though I have no idea what to do with one myself, I would love to have the kind of connection I've watched bloom around me. Finding my mate in the human man who brought it upon himself to come all the way here from another state to stop a hitman from killing my friend's mate would be absolutely amazing…if the man wasn't straight. How do I convince a man who's never been with another man take a chance on a relationship with me, when I'm not even sure I know how to be in one to begin with. But I have to try. Moving him from Tennessee to Nebraska seems like an easy task and maybe a way to win my mate over. Too bad his strange neighbor has other plans for my mate. Now I have to protect him from a tiger shifter who is looking to take over the alpha position by bringing home a chosen like a trophy, while moving him across country and convincing him I'm worth flipping his world upside down for. Should be easy, right?
Warning: Mpreg elements!
Also, my books have little to no angst, and lots and lots of fluff! They are better read in order, because I kind of write them like a continuation of a story, and I don't like to repeat explanations over and over if I can help it. No cheating, because that makes my heart hurt, and I try to avoid things that make me sad like I SHOULD be avoiding carbs. Sorry, I just don't want anyone being disappointed if they like the angst filled heart-rippers. These read more like a romantic comedy than a romantic drama.
I can’t believe I’m saying this—considering that bat-shit crazy title—but this 13th instalment of J.D. Light’s tongue-in-cheek mpreg shifter series was my favourite so far.
As soon as we met straight PI Richmond Pratt, in the final chapter of book 12, I knew I wanted to start his story toot-sweet. The way he reacted to the discovery of shifters and seeing his destined mate for the first time, a panther shifter named Payne, was more than enough to make me eager to see how this GFY/bi-awakening would unfold.
Richmond and Payne’s chemistry was one of the strongest of the series to date, in my humble opinion. It helped that the intensity of those mate-bond feelings were being experienced through the lens of a character who had never once expected to be capable of feeling such a strong attraction towards a man. Richmond may have identified as straight before meeting Payne, but I loved how open and eager he was to explore their connection, less worried about the whole “I’m suddenly into a dude” aspect of things and more focused on the elation he experienced having never felt so connected or cared about by another human being before.
I liked this book couple a lot and I enjoyed the way their GFY-type romance unfolded, helped along by the whole “destined mate” thing. I also enjoyed the little moments of action we got, continuing around the theme of bad shifters trying to kidnap and covet the Chosen, like Richmond, who are men capable of breeding, and are therefore a priced commodity in shifter circles. So, there was a little excitement when certain sketchy characters came after Richmond, but Payne did what he did best, going all kick-ass and growly while protecting his precious mate, which I always enjoy in books featuring shifter tropes.
As usual, this is not recommended as a stand-alone read. Although each book in the series features a new couple, the larger plot continues to build, one story to the next. No explanations or recaps are given—you either know what's happening, what's come before and who everyone is in the continually expanding cast of wacky characters, or you don't. So, again, this is NOT A STAND-ALONE.
Weird-ass title aside, this was a fun instalment, and likely one that will stand out as a favourite, should I ever make it through all 30 stories.
Not quite as much humor in this one, but quite a bit of action and a bit of suspense! Loved Payne and Richmond, once Richmond realized he was gay and all things went swimingly between them!
These keep getting shorter and shorter. From the usual 100 pages to now about 80. There's no real character development in this. Richmond goes from straight private eye to gay 4 u in 2.3 seconds after meeting Payne. It's fine though. A decent read. Light, fluffy. Quick. A solid 3 even if the main couple isn't very memorable.
I'm so completely addicted to this series. While every book focuses on one couple in particular the rest of the Purdy gang all make appearances and it feels very cohesive. I love the characters and the variety of shifters and the storyline has enough twists and surprises to stay interesting. In this book we have Richmond, a human chosen, who is learning to navigate this new world of shifters he's found himself immersed in, all while reconciling his attraction to Payne - the first man he's ever been interested in. I liked that the story was less about gay vs straight and more about Richmond realizing that he's coasted through life thus far without really feeling anything for any person or gender. His eyes being opened to true love and passion was really sweet and I love how perfect each mated pair is for each other. And then there's Bennett! I adore that totally snarky, mouthy, slightly warped but totally loyal leopard and I love seeing him pop up in each book. In fact, my only criticism (which really isn't), is that I don't see how I'm going to keep all these new characters straight after 30 books!! Lol But the more the merrier! Loved this!
Your mate thinks he's straight. What's a panther to do?
This series keeps getting better. As a continuous story you'd think it would be getting stale after 12 books. Nope. New dimensions pop up to keep you on your toes. I love reconnecting with old friends, watching them come alive again. When a PI with a good moral compass turns out to be his mate, Payne is stunned. Richmond thinks of himself as straight. He struggles with his attraction for Payne. Although his panther is screaming "claim, mate, mine", Payne is willing to wait until Richmond realizes he belongs to him. Once that happens, all bets are off. Throw a crazy neighbor whose obsession turns violent, and a new clue in the Chosen trafficking ring, and things are never dull. You will love this book! This book contains adult themes and language, mm sex and is intended for mature readers only.
The first thing that attracted me to this book was the name. I mean, it's just funny AF. I found the rest of the book to have that kind of humor too, which made it a good read.
I really liked the story overall. There was enough tension to keep the drama going, but not so much to overwhelm the humor and love story. I do wish that the story was a little longer, but that is just me.
I wouldn't recommend reading this as a standalone. I did, and while I got plenty of enjoyment out of the book, I'm pretty sure I would've liked it more if I were more aware of the overall story and the recurring characters that kept being mentioned.
Payne and Richmond (Richypoo) were so precious together and I loved the witty and fun dialogue that went on between the two of them. I rather liked Richmond's family and his best friend, Quinn, especially since Quinn was a gorilla shifter, which I've never come across in shifter romances, so I found it to be unique. The background danger fascinated me ( crazy neighbor), and I just basically enjoyed the whole flow of the story. One of my favorite series, and I'm absolutely excited to read the next book. =)
Why is it so hard for this author to use quotation marks at the beginning and end of a quote? *headdesk* ;p
Proofreading aside, this was, as always with this series, an adorable read! I love when a short story can leave me with a smile (and on occasion, a growl) and looking forward to the next book in the series! Never underestimate the value of fluff... it can make a dark day brighter! Now, can we PLEASE find this author a couple of beta readers? ;p
This is a shifter/paranormal suspense romance series, the thirteenth book in the series and it has to be read in order. The story starts with a PI (chosen) that is in Nebraska to stop his client’s hitman! He is overwhelmed and confused by his first attraction to a man, how will his mate convince him to give him a chance? Seriously go back to book one to start this series as they literally read like one continuous story.
Great short read. Loved the characters I was worried when reading the short for Payne I knew it would work out in the end. As always. Loved both Characters and how they developed. Although confused on how Richmond was only chosen out of his family. But loved this. Love this world. And can't wait for the next book and next book terra mortis.
I felt for Payne when he thought Richmond was rejecting him! I could only imagine that kind of heartbreak! But I love how they come together in the end! These books are pretty much Insta love and I absolutely enjoy that about them! The happy endings are pretty great too!! ❤️❤️😀😀
I enjoyed how Richmond took the news about the shifter community and their mates and how his relationship developed with Payne, who is not known for being calm and patient. As the two go back to Tennessee in order for Richmond to move to Nebraska and be with his mate, they learn another shifter has claimed Richmond as his mate, which is untrue. A good read!
Another great quick read on the Chosen series. Perfect dose of romance and comedy and just a touch of drama. These men are sexy and their stories fun to read. Definitely recommend.
I really liked Richmonds and Paynes story I just wished it was longer as i thought the last chapter stopped quite quickly. Overall this story had not just action in it by parts made me laugh especially with the other characters popping up through out
This book is about Payne, a panther shifter and Richmond, a PI. A cute romance that has some fluff, low angst and lots of sexy times between the two. A M/M romance and there are swords crossed, so if that offends you, don't read. An easy read.
I really enjoyed their story. It was a little sad, a lot fun and tones of loving and accepting yourself and others. Really loved it and I can't wait to see more of the new characters introduced here
Another winner from J.D.Light. I love that these are short fast reads with little angst and mates always win. You’ll love this one as with all the previous ones.
This was ok like all the others... Liked both characters.. Plot was simple .. I liked Quin , the mother and sister... I liked all the secondary characters...
