Pelican Bay #3

The Truth Within

Rate this book
I’m not a fighter. I never was. So how do I make the one man who might just be worth fighting for see that?
At twenty-five years old, Ford Cornell should have his whole life ahead of him but instead, the would-be artist is drowning in denial and just trying to get through each day. And the boy who once believed life was about following impossible dreams has finally come to accept that it’s really only about surviving a living nightmare… one of his own making.

But the bruises are becoming harder to hide.

So is the truth…

I refuse to fall for a guy who won’t accept the truth about who he is or what he wants. Not again…
They say bad things happen in threes.

For Sherriff Camden Wells, it’s more like fours… or fives… or dozens.

After an ugly lie destroys his career and the man he’d planned to spend the rest of his life with cuts him to the core with the ultimate betrayal, forty-year-old Cam is counting on his new job as sheriff of the quiet town of Pelican Bay to be the fresh start he needs. What he isn’t counting on is meeting a young man who makes him want to break all his own rules.

He wants me to accept something that will cause me to lose everything. I may not have much but it’s something and something is better than nothing… right?
Ford’s gotten used to his role as his older brother’s punching bag and being his mother’s never-ending disappointment. They may not be the Cleavers but family is family and Ford’s seen up close and personal what happens when you don’t have anyone in your corner… or when you go against family.

And there’s just no way he’s strong enough to survive that…

Nothing about us should make sense but maybe that’s why it does…
Two men… one living a lie and one knocking down the walls of the closet he was forced to live in for so long. When one white-hot encounter leads to another and then another, Ford and Cam are forced to accept that their need for each other isn’t going away anytime soon. But being together means one will need to go against everything he believes in.

So which man will bend and which will break? And what will the truth ultimately reveal?

**This book CAN be read as a standalone, but you may want to consider checking out books 1 and 2 in the series to fully enjoy all the secondary characters you'll meet in this story.

The Pelican Bay books are softer than this author's The Protectors series, something I prefer. Most of Kennedy's work is overwhelmingly angsty. That's not to say The Truth Within is angst free, because it's not. The story deals with domestic abuse and conversion therapy.

One of the MCs is being physically and verbally abused by his family. Ford's formative years were filled with self-hatred and repentance for his "sins"; when he meets Cam, he still believes he can suffocate the devil inside and not act on his feelings of lust toward men.

But Cam dated a closeted man who made all kinds of promises he never meant to keep and doesn't want to play that game again. The problem is that he can't stay away from Ford.

Watching Ford bow down to his brother's fists time and time again was extremely difficult. Jimmy was the most vile of characters: a cruel coward, a psychopath, a disgusting, useless human being. And Ford's mom ... don't get me started. That woman had no redeeming qualities, and I'm so glad Ford finally saw the truth at the end.

I loved the explosive smexy times. Kennedy writes amazing sex: raw and animalistic. Ford was perhaps too well-versed in the art of seduction considering he was a virgin, but I didn't care. Cam and Ford were XXX together!

I also adored Walter, the war veteran and Ford's neighbor, and thought he was a great addition to the story. Walter's little dog, Puddles, was ridiculously adorable.

My main criticism is that the story wasn't evenly paced. The first 80 percent is about the push-pull between the MCs. Ford wants Cam, then feels ashamed when they come together. Cam wants Ford, but doesn't want to hide. Everyone sort of ignores Ford's bruises (surely they could have done more?). Not a lot happens.

Then in the last 20 percent, EVERYTHING happens: someone from Cam's past shows up; Ford's Uncle Curtis the shithead begins spreading rumors; there's an investigation into accusations against Cam; things come to a head with Jimmy and Ford's mom; Ford tracks down an old friend; Ford comes out; the guys move in together; and Walter gets the surprise of a lifetime.

It's a LOT, and it all felt really rushed. Events that deserved attention, such as Ford finally standing up to Jimmy, were merely summarized.

As a side note, I don't think this book would work well as a standalone. We are introduced to Cam and Ford in the previous stories, and the couples from the first two books are quite present here. I recommend reading the series in order.

This book introduces two new potential MCs, so I don't think we've seen the end of Pelican Bay.

Omg. Where do I even begin. Ford should have been living his life instead he is doing what everyone expects and denying who he is. An abusive brother, a mother who is more worried about her image, Ford is in bell until he meets the new sheriff in town. Cam is immediately drawn to Ford but years of being told loving a man is wrong has Ford deep in the closet. Can Cam make Ford see they can have a life together? Once again, this author draws you in and doesn't let go. This is a beautifully written story of love and hope, hope for a better life. Five Stars!

I am a huge Sloane Kennedy fan... The hugest biggest ;) So of course I have read every book in this series (and in all the others). Now I have to be honest here and say that I am even though I really enjoy the "Pelican Bay" series... the "Protectors" are just a bit more my style.  This series is a bit different...sweeter and milder I would say, though it still deals with multiple triggers...

I really enjoyed this one a lot and I would have given it 4,5-5 stars if not for one little thing (person), that annoyed me..... Ford. At first I could deal with his brand of avoidence/acceptence, but after a while... I got more and more pissed !!

https://www.google.com/search?q=why do you annoy me gif

Now, this is not the books fault. This is just a trigger that I sometimes have a problem with reading about. I have never been in the situation ,that Ford is in (thankfully), and I know I shouldn't judge...but damn I wanted to shake some sense into him a couple of times !! Thank god for Cam...who was pretty great actually ;)

Sloane Kennedy does hurt/comfort really well, and even though Ford annoyed me at times, I still loved him, and I was glad he had Cam on his side to be his rock...Which in turn made him strong enough to be there for Cam ;) A true love match !!

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor sense8 gay gif

This was a great addition to the series, and I also loved catching up with old characters. I can't wait to read more in this series...or any of her other series. I am especially curious about Sawyer and Jett's story, which will be next....and what about Theo... So many characters and hopefully so many future books :P

“You make me want to choose something that is going to cost me everything.”

Uhnggg, ALL. THE. FEELS.

I’m so glad I returned to Pelican Bay. I loved Cam’s and Ford’s book. I was already intrigued when they met for the first time in the last book. The new sheriff in town and the younger brother of the town’s bully. It was intense, just as I suspected it would be with these two.

I felt his front brush my back. He didn’t touch me otherwise. He just seemed to hold his body there so I could feel the heat of it against my own. My body was raging… demanding I turn around and take what was mine. He’d been mine from the moment I’d laid eyes on him […].

“Be sure, Ford. Because there’s no going back—” That was all I got out before Ford yanked my head down and slammed his mouth against mine.

I really wished I could’ve given Cam & Ford the 5 stars their love deserves but for the endless inner monologue I had to skim through I’m going with four. Funny thing is that although there were so many pages that were not quite necessary, the author failed in my opinion to give appropriate closure to certain events - that were, in the end, handled too fast to bring the story to a close. That was honestly kinda disappointing.

Still, I loved the ending super much and I'm already looking forward to reading the last book in the series about a certain Nurse Ratchet and Ford’s childhood-best-friend.

special shoutout to old-man Walter. His dong-talk throughout the book had me really cracking up. I love that he's part of this wonderful found-family now.

I'm loving this series

This is my favourite one so far in what has been a fabulous series set in the surroundings of a small town.

Sheriff Camden Wells is just my kind of guy, honest, loyal, with just a hint of vulnerability. Ford was a perfect match for him who looked like he'd be all wrong on the surface.

I loved Ford, he'd been through so much and while he'd let it get him down, he'd never fully broken.

His relationship with his mother and brother was cleverly revealed throughout the narrative and he never felt like a weak man to me, but one weighted down by obligations.

Together they were a study in contrasts and toppy Ford was an absolute joy!

The secondary cast were both familiar and new, with Walter being an absolute delight.

The epilogue had me tearing up and I can't wait for book four which is Sawyer's story.

"Tell me what you're feeling, baby."
"Perfect. Alive. Free.... so fucking free," I breathed. Which made no sense because I wasn't free. This man was now the center of my universe. "Yours," I choked out. "I'm yours."

No doubt, the best one from SK! I just can’t stop the tears from rolling down my face. This story broke and mended me. Before starting this I asked myself if I’m ready to read a story about a deep closeted guy falling for the local town sheriff? The answer was yes because I liked hurting my feelings. That HEA in the end was so hard fought. When Ford finally got to be himself and stood up to his tormentors, the winning moment. The hurt and comfort this story brought me were immense. I wanna hate Ford so much for doing some things but in the end I can’t. My faith in SK has been restored. Excited for Sawyer’s story!!

3.5 stars ⭐️ Even though I don't too extensively into age gap romances, the story was impressive enough for me to not concern about my dislike. The first half of the story was where I struggled to catch the camaraderie between Ford and Cam. But the slow process of the character development of MCs kept me get along with the story without sensing many niggles.

You can effortlessly find visible scars on the abused person, but it's hard to imagine what is like his/her mental scars. It goes down deepest inside of you, and maybe they never would get healed.
Ford was 25 and being abused by his brother Jimmy. He never accused his brother of it because if he did, he knew that his family would jeopardize. Jimmy was the idol son Ford’s mother wanted, and she never wanted to believe that something was really wrong with Jimmy.

Camden was the new sheriff of Pelican Bay. He was told that Ford was being abused, and he wanted to make sure that the kid was okay. When he saw Ford, something shifted inside of his heart instantly. He wanted to protect Ford, but Ford was too chickened out even to say Jimmy was the reason for all of the things which were happening to him.
With time, Ford and Cam were getting along with each other well. Ford's family was religious, and he had been taught being attracted to same-sex was such an evil thing that he would burn in hell for it. So, Ford didn't know what to do with that desired feeling, but to know he was being cared for by someone, and not want to concern about Jimmy so much made his heart feel safe and comfortable.

My niggles:
Ford's back and forth behavior with Cam annoyed me. I knew he had his own reason to act that way. But it was too much to bear.
I was really bored by the end. I mean I pretty much read 80% of the story without fuss. But the other 20% was a loss for me. Still, I was glad somehow I got finished the book.
I was so confused the whole time with secondary characters. I think some of them were MCs of earlier books, and some of them will be the MCs of the next books (if there will be any) in this series. I couldn't at least keep memorizing the couple’s name. This is what happens when you jump into a series without reading earlier ones. #sofoolish 🥲

Overall I enjoyed reading the story. A dose of reasonable anger, hot-ish sex scenes, age gap, a gay virgin, typical dramas, and caring MC were there to remind you that it was an SK’s book. ;)

Good addition to the Pelican Bay series mostly located in an animal shelter which finally is a shelter for hot characters, with flaws and ordeal, to find their plus one.
Of course, it was time to enjoy the sexy Cam, the new Sheriff in town, who always, always answers calls when there’s disturbance in Ford’s house. Yes, there is something brewing between Camden, burned out in his previous position and not wanting to repeat being in a relationship based on secret, and Ford, ashamed of his past and ready to sacrifice his self if it means his family doesn’t reject him.

A delicious age-gap, a good dose of angst, two MCs with a gentle soul, a lot of emotion, a high level of chemistry and steam (yes, it’s Sloane Kennedy after all), a second chance for both Cam and Ford to find happiness, the appearance of the previous characters, a great sense of “made-family” and friendship.

Entertaining and hot, no question about that, but it felt a bit overstocked for me : so much said about secondary characters, some who will for sure make MCs in the next books and a ton of baggage piling up for our MCs. That’s a lot and at the same time not enough, as that much could only be brushed.
This is to the detriment of the intensity usually poured in by Sloane Kennedy in the romance and for which she is so good at.

I liked it, I really did, but didn’t love it, because sometimes, “less is more”.

4.5 stars.

The Pelican Bay series has really grown on me, I couldn't wait for Ford's story. Kennedy does hurt/comfort so well and she nailed it this time even if Ford really needed to extract his head from his backside a lot sooner than he did. But, when he did it was worth the irritation. I got why he was so afraid, the abuse he suffered by those he trusted was hideous but still ...... he hurt Cam with his ridiculous dithering and pushing away.

Loved Cam and Ford together, Cam especially (he's everything that a hero should be)

4.5 stars.

I’d fought to get here. To this moment. To the man next to me. He was my sanctuary…my truth.

The Truth Within was really good. The writing just sucks you in and I love that feeling. It's lighter than the author's other work that I've read but it worked out really well! The sex scenes were x rated and it's what I've come to expect from Sloane Kennedy.

This could've been a 5 star read but I had one issue with it; it was that there was so much push and pull with Ford trying to come to terms with his sexuality. I mean I get it but I wish Sloane didn't take almost all of the book for him to figure it out. Because of that there was the last few chapters that felt rushed.

And Walter was amazing!!! There were new characters that were introduced to us and I'm hoping that we get their books next.

This big, powerful, beautiful man who, for some explicable reason, actually seemed to care about me said my name… and he did it in a way that no one ever had. Like he needed me. Not someone… me.

While I loved the second half and especially the end, I had some trouble with both Ford and Cam in the first half.

Ford is the younger brother of Jimmy, the one who attacked Dallas’ bear in the first book. Ford doesn’t have it easy. His brother beats him up on a daily basis and his mother covers for Jimmy. But they’re still his family, so he can’t just up and leave them.

Cam, the new sheriff in town, knows Ford has a tough home life, but so long as Ford doesn’t come forward, there’s nothing he can do. He can only respond to all calls of disturbances at Ford’s address and hope Jimmy hasn’t killed his brother this time.

Ford has issues. Lots and lots of issues. He thinks he’s going to hell for all his sinful thoughts, but he can’t seem to stop his attraction to Cam. So after a shared kiss, Ford retreats into himself, making Cam angry. But Cam doesn’t seem to understand the depth of Ford’s self-hatred…

I thought I would love Ford, since I have such a weak spot for the abused younger guy that just needs some love. But he was a bit hard to like at first. The way he refused to stand up for himself got a bit tiring. I felt the same about Cam. I was hoping he would be super patient with Ford, but he wasn’t at first, so he got on my nerves as well. They made things quite difficult for themselves.

I do have to say that when they both got their head out of their respective asses, I really started to enjoy this book. The romance was finally romantic instead of the push and pull they had going on at first. And I loved the little family they ended up creating.

Overall this was quite enjoyable, despite the frustrating first half.

Oh boy this was tough - abuse always is 😊. 4.5 stars for this next event in Pelican Bay. I adore this author so this was an insta buy, sight unseen. I’m glad I didn’t check out too many reviews and just dived in. The story continues directly from book 2 and all the main characters are still around. Cam the local sheriff is called out to see Ford after a call was made about domestic violence. This story between Cam & Ford is hard. Ford has been programmed to believe he has a devil inside of him but he longs for Cam deeply. Ford is a kind and beautiful soul who until Cam, only had the love of his elderly neighbor. His family treated him like trash and while each person had their own shame and disfunction, non of them looked out for Ford, they just used and abused., As this unraveled I felt much better for Ford & Cam and was glad for the small victories. Their romance kept me up till very early hours of the morning!! But I just had to be sure they were ok ❤️I’m really looking forward to the next installment in this town.

This was a beautiful beautiful book. It went above and beyond my expectations. Even though there was a slight religious overtone, it only enhanced the tragedy of one of the MC's life experiences. The characters were well-developed, the narrative was just amazing, the well of emotions it caused was bottomless.

This is a story of transformation and liberation. Sometimes we are locked in the prison of our own making and are holding the key but not willing to use it. It takes that special person to show us the way. Cam and Ford are stunning in their pain and pleasure, they go through incredible journey together, fight for their love and free themselves from their past. It was moving and magnificent book full of wonderful people with quirks and so much love and support to give. I loved it! I highly recommend this book!

**** We find ourselves back in the mix of characters from this amazing, worthwhile series. I've liked every book.****
Cam is 40ish, previously in Detroit,

a tough cop for 20 years, now in Pelican Bay, has answered a domestic violence call at this home too many times.
Ford, 25, artist and now a punching bag

for his horrible, good-for-nothing brother Jimmy, lied and said he fell. His neighbor, Walter had called it in. Cam noticed Jimmy's knuckles are red and bruised, but couldn't do anything outside the law.

Jimmy, if you remember, and his pals tortured the big bear, Gentry, at the Wildlife Sanctuary Dallas and Nolan are running. The previous Sheriff, covered for Jimmy.

All of this hurts Cam, because he is attracted to beautiful Ford, who has so much potential and is held back by his crappy homophobic family. As in the other great stories in Sloane Kennedy's books, we see the events and interactions, while we feel for our men and want them to finally have peace and happy times.
Gentry...

Each man has pain in their past, but stand strong to show the world they can overcome. Walter, Ford's neighbor needs help and Ford jumps right in to do so, and is rescued by Cam. Cam takes Ford to the hospital and watches over him.

It is a slow burn romance with ups and downs, anticipation and hesitance, but we watch them go through the motions and inner turmoils, too. Their sexy times sizzle and it's intense, plus each man tops and bottoms.

We see many factors, their hurt and fears, plus they have the Wildlife Sanctuary guys to help.
These stories will make you tear up, get angry and then find "reader's heaven" in the final results. It's a well done story that can stand alone, but I was glad I already knew the other characters.

Glorious writing a steady paced tale of pain that produces peace.
Highly recommended. ENJOY !

Cam is the new sheriff in town. Ford has lived (and suffered) there his entire life. Instant attraction doesn't mean anything when there's no trust and apparent incompatible philosophies. Or does it? Does it maybe give two men pause enough to consider a different side of things? Possibly even a different way of life.

Cam has found a new home in Pelican Bay. Escaping the false accusation of misbehavior in Detroit, he's looking forward to the quieter pace of small town living.

I loved Cam's "voice" in his head that would constantly contradict him and set him straight when he tried to lie to himself. This was a much needed levity in the otherwise morose setting.
Ford Cornell was beautiful… there was just no other word for it. But he was also so very broken.

Ford wasn’t just closeted, he was a closeted homophobe.
He'd been taught that family was everything. Family stood behind each other, turning a blind eye to each other's faults. Except in a deeply religious family where some faults were more forgivable than others and where some differences were shunned as the devil's work. Ford's family life was a difficult one, but it was the only one he had.

Although it stretched the bounds of believability, I enjoyed the romance. I always enjoy stories of people overcoming odds to find their HEA and this series is filled with feel good resolutions for all of its characters. However, the epilogue was a major information dump in its aim to give every single character an HEA. It was overkill. Those background stories could have more easily been incorporated one by one in future books of the series.

I did enjoy spending time with all of our beloved characters from the previous books - as well as some of the not so beloved ones.

3.25 stars because it's better than a 3 ;-)

I think this one is my favorite so far in the way it was plotted and resolved and didn't have a bunch of implausible hurdles to overcome in a matter of days. I love hurt/comfort stories and this one certainly was that.

I felt the connection between Cam and Ford but sometimes I just wanted to smack Cam for his lack of communication and his instant assumption that Ford was doing him wrong. I know they both brought baggage to the table but it seemed like Cam kept expecting Ford to unpack his baggage immediately while Cam was allowed to pile all his on Ford to carry also.

I did have some trouble with the timeline in this one. It seemed like that two week cruise was months long.

I'm still loving this series.
At first I was a bit unsure whether I'd enjoy this one, as it isn't as centred in the Sanctuary and the little family there, although, of course they are featured too.
I ended up loving it though.
Once again it had the hurt/comfort which I'm a sucker for, and all of the characters that I can't help but fall in love with.
As always, it's already teased the characters for the next book, so I'm really looking forward to reading that.

Been reading too many of these by the same author I think...all starting to sound alike

There's too much going on in these books, so many storylines and sub-plots. Like Walter and Lenny. Theo and Ford. Ford and his family. Ford and his traumatic past. The aunt and the mother... Amidst all that, Cam's record from a false accusation and the whole thing with Riley was just more chaos added to the madness.

Too much going on!! Not enough focus on the MCs themselves. Relationships between people with pasts CAN happen without all the drama, ya know!

I didn't like Ford's waffly back and forth, tho I kinda understood it. But then his ultimate revelation was sorta anti-climatic. Like just suddenly realized at 80% that he loves Cam. Just because Nolan or Isaac asked him a Q. That's a little too easy, given all the other stuff the author is throwing left and right.

I was hoping for 2 strong male leads. Cam seemed so strong in the beginning but then he turned kinda beta (and let's not forget the whole ex thing again with Carter). Ford was never very strong but then he'd do dominating acts and I was like, huh?

So neither lead fit their "roles" and I'm OK with that if both of them broke their roles in a GOOD WAY.

But...

Not so much.

I love this series. But this book, sadly, is the one I liked less.
There's plenty of steam, love and also plenty of pain and angst, typical of this author. The problem, in my opinion, is that in the first half of the story I just wanted to stangle Ford.. ok, your life is shitty and painful, but grow a backbone!! And you can't use your situation as an excuse to treat like a doormat the man who cares about you!
And, on the other hand, Cam isn't portrayed too deeply, so I couldn't really develop a connection with him, he's a little 2d-ish.
The second half of the book is better, but there is too much going on! All the secondary characters got their ending... But that distracts from the main plot, and for this reason I didn't really enjoy the ending.
I hope the next book will be better

My third trip to Pelican Bay with The Truth Within, I enjoyed Cam and Ford's story but I did have my struggle with this one.

I loved Cam he had a big heart and I enjoyed his friendships with all the Sanctuary gang, Walter and his diva dog and then Riley.

Cam and Ford's relationship was not an easy one and this was because of Ford and his issues.

My feelings for Ford while reading this was like a rollercoaster ride,
Liked
first I liked him and I felt sorry for him, the way his Mother, Uncle and Jimmy treated him and what he went through when he was younger.
Disliked
then the way he treated Cam after they kissed or whatever, I did not like and the way he let Jimmy treat him got on my nerves, I was thinking "grow a pair and stand up for yourself, don't be a doormat " agghhh.
Loved
then he went to see Gentry the bear and he stole my heart the connection they had made me cry, the Ford that left the Sanctuary that night was a different man.

The last few chapters had me hooked and the epilogue was wonderful and just WOW, GO Walter.

I know it's Sawyer and Jett's story next but I wonder if Linc and Theo might be book five in this series.

The hurt. The comfort. It's glorious!

Though I did want to kick Ford a bit in the seat of his ass. As always, lots of amazing secondary characters that just jump off the page to add flavor and texture to your reading. The sex was down and dirty hot - but the story is still center stage. It was a bit anti-climactic at the end but I'll take it.
