Series: The Sons of Gavin MacLeod - Book 4 Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca (July 30, 2019) Publication Date: July 30, 2019 Genre: Historical Romance Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble For Reviews, Giveaways, Fabulous Book News, follow: http://tometender.blogspot.com
This is not the best book of the series. It was good and I am glad that Gavin found his son. The heroine was different too. I liked her but there was just something odd about the whole book.lots of evil people and an unknown adversary so there must be another book. Probably about Isobel and Kerr. I do like this authors writing though and I really liked the other stories in the series.
Series: The Sons of Gregor MacLeod #4 Publication Date: 7/30/19 Number of Pages: 448 **4.25 Stars **
Laird Gavin MacKinnon is a very, very angry man, filled with rage, and he has every reason to be that way. Two and a half years ago Gavin’s almost-two-year-old son, Ewan, went missing. Others thought he was dead, but Gavin was convinced that he still lived. Ewan disappeared when his mother took him to the fall festival against Gavin’s wishes. While she was there, she contracted the plague and died – and Gavin went missing. Some thought that Ewan also died of the plague, but Gavin just didn’t believe it.
At this year’s fall festival, Gavin is meeting an informant who says she knows where Ewan is and for a reward, she’ll tell him. As Gavin is walking the streets he notices a woman watching him. Could it be the informant? He recognizes the woman as the wife of the future laird of the MacIntyre clan. Why is she looking at him like that? When he confronts her about it, she flees.
Deirdre MacIntyre is the wife of the next laird of the MacIntyre clan and the youngest daughter of the laird of the MacColl clan. She was married at the age of fifteen to a man she’d never met. About two-and-a-half years ago, her husband, Lewis, brought home a small child and gave him to her. He told her the child was his illegitimate offspring and that she was to raise him as her own. His name was Ewan.
When Deirdre saw Gavin on the street during the festival, she panicked. He looked exactly like her Ewan – and she was sure – no matter what Lewis told her – that this was Ewan’s father. But, he was so very angry.
Gavin’s men finally take him to meet the informant – and the name she gives him – is Deirdre MacIntyre. When Gavin and his men tear off looking for Deirdre and Lewis’ camp, they find that she’s already fled. They’ll find her – and she’ll pay for what she’s done!
Gavin rescues Ewan, but Deirdre refuses to let them leave without her. Gavin lets her come with them, but fully intends to send her back as soon as they arrive and get Ewan settled.
This was a good story that kept me moving from page-to-page. I liked Deirdra, but I didn’t like a few of the things she did in the beginning. However, she quickly redeemed herself in my eyes and I really admired her for the woman she became. I loved Gavin from the first page to the last. It was lovely to watch them grow to care for each other and support the other in sharing Ewan’s love. One thing that I really liked was the way the author chose to take care of Deirdre’s marriage so that she and Gavin could have their HEA. I could actually put myself in both Deirdre’s and Gavin’s place and believe that I could very easily act as they did, so I found it easy to forgive them.
You could read this book as a standalone, but to understand the whole overarching theme of the books, you should probably read them in order. I believe there were some good hints about the ongoing mystery of the man who is trying to destroy Gregor MacLeod and his sons – and now, I can’t wait for the next book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Highland Captive by Alyson McLayne is book four in her Sons of Gregor MacLeod historical romance series. Though part of a series this novel reads well as a standalone. However, I do plan to read the previous books in the series and any future installments.
Laird Gavin MacKinnon is one of five clan leaders previously fostered together by the great Gregor MacLeod, in order to create allies and bring peace to the Highlands. Gavin’s personality has changed for the worse since his not quite two-year-old son, Ewan, went missing two years ago. Word has reached Gavin that his son has been claimed by the wife of the heir of Clan MacIntyre.
Deidre MacIntyre, born in Clan MacColl, now wife of Lewis MacIntyre, son and heir of the ruthless Laird MacIntyre, claims Ewan is her son. Upon seeing Gavin MacKinnon, Deirdre begins to fear that she has been misled, but she loves her young son and will never leave him.
Gavin never gave up his certainty that his son was alive. He now knows where Ewan is and wastes no time retrieving him. He has to bring Deirdre along too, because she refuses to leave Ewan, claiming he is hers. Gavin and Deirdre clash but soon realize that they must put aside their differences for Ewan’s sake. Deidre’s husband, father-in-law and brother arrive, bringing the promise of war with them. Will Deirdre be returned to her family?
There’s nothing else quite like a Scottish Highlander, and I love reading about them. Highland Captive met my high standards. Ms. McLayne has acquitted herself well. I want to keep visiting with these interesting characters she’s created. I love the intense familial bonds. The plot holds the attention and has great twists. I loved the story and rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to all readers of historical romance, especially lovers of Highlander romance. There is some explicit sexual content that may be offensive to some readers.
My thanks to SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
Highland Captive by Alyson McLayne is book 4 in The Sons of Gregor MacLeod Series. This is the story of Deidre MacIntyre and Gavin MacKinnon. I have read the previous books but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Gavin's wife took their son Ewan to a festival where she ended up dying and his son thought to have died too. But Gavin thinks he is just missing and has been looking for him for a few years. When he gets a lead as to who may have him he goes forward to find him. Deidre was forced to marry at a early age to a husband she hadn't met who happen to bring her a child for her to raise who he said was his. Now in their present day she see Gavin and knows that he must be Ewan's father but is unsure what is going on. Gavin ends up taken back his son but Deidre won't let him go without her. This opens Gavin up to either giving Deidre back on keeping her when they come to get her. Enjoyed their story.
❤️❤️❤️1/2 💋💋 Quite a good adventure, but I didn’t connect with the characters as I have in other books .
May have just been me , so don’t solely judge the book by this one review. Please read others to get a good overall picture.
Good writing in general and the storyline was great . It’s got a beautiful romantic element that is really good. That I did enjoy! The two are perfect in so many ways and they do light up the pages with their love .
I’d give it Three and a half stars.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
I liked the story and the plot line. Kept you reading. It bogged down though and I wanted the story to get to the point in many places. I loved Gavin and how he changed throughout the story. Deirdre too went through a transition from a mouse to a lion. I enjoyed the story.
Received an ARC from the publisher for an honest review.
For two and half long years Gavin MacKinnon, Laird of MacKinnon has searched for his young son Ewan. Ewan disappeared when Gavin’s wife Cristel took the boy to a market day gathering, she returned ill with the plague and died without giving Gavin any information about what happened to Ewan. Most believe the boy perished, but Gavin refuses to consider the possibility and will never stop searching for his boy. A lead about Ewan has brought Gavin back to the same gathering that he disappeared from.
Deidre MacIntyre nee MacColl is at the gathering at her husband Lewis’ request when she sees Gavin and knows that he is the father of her son Ewan, seeing him terrifies her and when he confronts her about her interest in him, fear sends her running back to her home and her son, wondering what Lewis has done.
Gavin is sure Deidre is the woman the witness saw with Ewan. So he along with his foster brother Kerr follow her to her home and find Ewan, but even then, Deidre denies that Ewan is Gavin’s son and much to Gavin’s dismay, Ewan doesn’t know who he is and refuses to leave his “Mama”. Left with no choice, Gavin takes Deidre and Ewan back to his keep. He plans to send Deidre back just as soon as Ewan becomes comfortable with him again. He knows that taking Deidre is likely to cause a clan war and he welcomes the fight. But what he doesn’t plan on is falling in love with her or the trouble brewing within his own clan!
This was a good story, but compared with the previous books, I didn’t feel like it was as well thought out and plotted. At the end of this book, I had more questions than answers and was truly baffled about a few things. I also had a hard time liking Deidre at the beginning, I sympathized with her pain – but Ewan was not her son and she knew Gavin was his father, but she lied and tried to keep Ewan from Gavin, even knowing the pain he has suffered for years without his son, that just seemed beyond cruel to me. But Gavin wasn’t much easier to like, he was just so angry and determined to get rid of Deidre that it was a bit hard to side with him. The writing in general was good, but the first two-thirds of the book seemed to drag and then the last third flew by in a flash, with multiple villains, shocking secrets, a long awaited love scene, more questions than answers and an epilogue that left me feeling a little disappointed. This is the fourth book in the series and I would recommend reading the books in order rather than trying to figure out the ongoing mystery of who is trying to destroy the Sons of Gregor MacLeod by starting with this book first.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher.*
After my disappointment with both Lachlan's story in Highland Conquest and Callum's story in Highland Betrayal, I didn't have high hopes for Gavin's story. After all, from the series, it was really only Darach's story in Highland Promise that captivated me; and, in retrospect, that's the only reason I was willing to give Gavin's story a chance.
That being said, quite a few things were against him from the beginning, including....
- that he'd already been married once - that he had a son whom he lost - that he was obsessed with finding his son and nothing else - that the loss of his son had made him bitter and dead set against any feelings to romance or tenderness ever again
However, contrary as I am, this is also what made Gavin such an interesting puzzle for me to read about. Who can turn this highlander's heart from stone to living, loving flesh? What happens when he gets his son back and will this change him? And, of course, HOW can he hope to make a romance work with a married woman?

Ahem, in answer to some of these questions and concerns, I'd be lying if I didn't mention that the author took some short cuts, including that:
All of these things just made the romance progress much easier, but at the same time it felt like all these setups were meant for conflict purposes, and they just...never came around. By the end of the story we have the same "secret betrayal" plot that happened in Callum's story as well, and it just kind of took away from the originality.
So...yeah, on the one hand I'm GLAD that the romance progressed as smoothly and as sweetly as it did, but I ALSO feel somewhat cheated, like there should have been more conflict or that more conflict would've been justified.
Meh, anyway, it's better than Books 2 and 3 of this series, but still not as good as Book 1.
EDIT: Not going to read Book 5 because reviews indicate that Isobel will be just like Maggie, except worse. Think I'll end off this series while I'm ahead: on a high note rather than a low one.
This is book #4 and I thought it had the perfect mix of humor, suspense, action, romance & drama. I like these characters and am glad that Gregor & his foster sons appear in each book while not taking focus away from the intened H/h. Gavin & Deirdre have good chemistry. Ewan was adorable & I'm a sucker for a cute kid in a story. Glad Gavin's problems were finally resolved but we still have an 'ultimate villain' to unmask. Onward to the next book.
I couldn’t go on. This book was so low on my believability index that it actually frustrated me. Now if I can believe in vampires, werewolves, dragons and blue aliens I thought I could believe in almost anything.... well this book proved me wrong. . For starters, to set the scene it’s medieval Scotland and the hero is searching for his 4 year old son who went missing 2 years prior. The heroine has been raising the child for 2 years not knowing who he was and apparently one look at the hero (a random stranger in a crowd) she could somehow tell he was the father. HOW?! Does she have witchy abilities? Because I might believe that! But no, no explanation other than looks given. . Next is the mention of Fibonacci’s sequence by a woman in medieval Scotland who knows about it which is interesting because it doesn’t get coined as such until the 19th century. (It’s a mathematical equation that I honestly can’t believe any person in her situation would have the slightest clue). Is she a time traveling witch? (This would make more sense). . Unfortunately I couldn’t make it past chapter 4 in this book because of the unbelievability and poor research. However I have heard that some people loved it! I wish I could have been one of those people to give it more of a go but the trust between reader and author was broken.
When Laird Gavin MacKinnon discovers his lost son Ewan in the care of a young woman, Deirdre MacIntyre he is filled with rage and the need for revenge. Deirdre is disturbed and like a mother bear with a cub flees, after all this wee lad is her son! Taking back his son it seems will include Gavin taking this ridiculous woman who claims to be the mother of HIS son. But more than that, by taking Deirdre, war with her clan becomes imminent, just another result of retrieving his son. What Gavin did not expect was to come to have feelings for this so determined woman. A worthy Highlander romance.
Great change of pace and my absolute favourite in the series. Sounds like there should be a book six.
The greatest mix up comes from have a female lead Deirdre whom is not the typical bold & independent type all the other books have had to date. Rather she’s a meek & mild women who has suffered years of abused at the hands of her family. This has translated in to a quiet subservient women who is trying to get through like undetected with her “son” Ewan.
Another vibe that’s changed in this book is Gavin our male lead is not interested in Deirdre at all. He actually almost seems to despise her for the first half of the book. There is a slow but tantalizing build up of their relationship with little hints & realization bubbling through.
Alyson did an awesome job in this book of “holding back” on the relationship. It wasn’t a whirlwind love fest from the get go but rather an almost give & take. Both characters come to the relationship with their own scars that hinder them from just jumping into something. It’s through trust, self realization & time that the friendship grow into something more.
Most of us can guess what book six will look like relationship wise for Isobel & Kerr. (Since we have heard about it’s turmoils & growth since book one.) it’s probably going to flow the same ways a book three (highlanders promise) considering the prior arrangement for the betrothal. However, the thickening plot of the rival army and the disguised leaders is going to be interesting to watch unfold. Any guesses out there as to who it maybe?!
An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Highland Captive is the 4th book in Alyson McLayne’s the Sons of Gregor MacLeod series. MacLeod fosters five young boys all destined to become powerful lairds. This is Gavin MacKinnon’s story.
While this is a stand-alone book, McLayne has been painstakingly laying the foundation for Gavin’s story throughout her previous books. Gavin MacKinnon is a changed man after his wife dies and his young son disappears. He has spent years living in anguish and combing the countryside for his missing child. Readers have been waiting for Gavin Mackinnon’s story and Alyson McLayne does not disappoint!
Gavin finally finds his son, Ewan, in the care of Deirdre MacIntryre who claims the child is her own. Gavin assumes that his reunion with his son will be the end of his anguish but nothing goes according to plan. He finds himself attracted to the mysterious Deirdre and struggling to rebuild a relationship with his son.
I received an e-arc of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. I LOVED this book. I have been waiting very impatiently for Gavin's story and I was not disappointed in it at all. After reading the other 3 books in this series I was worried I was getting myself too hyped up for the 4th but such was not the case. The emotion in this book and compassion displayed just made this book so good. I loved this book and the series so much that they are for sure going into my reread pile. I highly recommend.

BOOK QUOTE (Gavin says to Deirdre)__ “You’re a lovely lass, for sure, but you donna stare at me with lust in your eyes. ‘Tis not a swiving you’re after.”
Gleann Moireasdan, Scotland, 1453
Laird Gavin MacKinnon, has not been the same man since his two year old son Ewan went missing two years ago. He has been mean, rude, heartless, nasty, spiteful and offensive, making those around him who care for him most-the most miserable too. He barely sleeps and just searches for his missing son, his dead wife Cristel had taken him to the fall festival when he had forbidden them to go! She didn’t even report that Ewan was missing for hours, which was par for the course! As she pretty much ignored him and only brought him with her was to impress some bloody highborn lassies!
He would have punished his cold, heartless, bitch of a wife severely, if she had not died of the Scottish plague. As this fall festival was the area where most died from the pestilence. In addition Gavin’s wife, his son’s black hearted mother, showed her true nature after giving birth to Ewan. She admitted only marrying Gavin for his title as Laird, no longer wanting Gavin touching her or even in her bed. She even had the balls to tell him to sleep with other women as long he never touched her again! Cristel felt she did her required duty of giving him the male heir that was expected of her. Gavin had been deceived thinking they were a love match like his parents and his foster father, Gregory MacLeod. It tore Gavin apart but at least he thought he had his sweet lad until he was then away from him. Cristel had ignored Ewan and now she was dead from the plague! The other thing Gavin truly hated now was liars! He was about to meet one who lied about the thing he wanted most, his missing son!
Deirdre MacIntyre’s husband had demanded she go to this gathering. Perhaps trying to make up for all the time he had been away for the past several years. Optimistically, she thought this might be a second chance and a new beginning for them. Since he told her to leave their son Ewan home. A son she accepted since he was brought him home, claiming it was his child from a former lover and the mother was dead. Deirdre would never blame a child for his parents shortcomings, plus she knows what is like to be abused both mentally and physically by ones you should trust the most. Her family gave her to Lewis to marry as a fifteen year old child. It was as if her family just wanted to be rid of her. Lewis was kind but their relationship was platonic not one of a husband and wife, more like siblings.
Now Deirdre was happy she didn’t bring Ewan, as she was in shock looking at a Highland warrior and Laird that looks exactly like her son! As Gavin was hoping she had news of his son which she denied and packed up and left only to be abducted by the highland devil himself! Furious she kept lying not realizing how much she loves Ewan. In the beginning Gavin feels only jealousy and hatred for this woman who had two years he couldn’t get back with his son. At first, Gavin is angry yet is so physically attracted to Deirdre. He now realizes how nurturing and protective she is of his son and how they love each other like a real mother and son. Now he realizes he is falling in love with a married woman he could never have! A woman he realizes who had nothing to do with his sons abduction and only loves his son, he soon realizes she’s the mother he always wanted for his son. As Ewans biological mother only ignored Ewan only caring for herself. Plus his son worships Deirdre and he soon follows his son’s foot steps, but her being married is a big obstacle. Ewan biggest 4 year old wish is for his parents could be married to each other.
As Deirdre thinks this Laird is the most handsome man in Scotland, who sometimes scares her,ut is absolutely swoon worthy. She understands she has misjudged him and develops feelings she doesn’t understand. Will she ever become the brave lion she desires or always be the scared little mouse? In addition will Gavin ever find out who his true enemies are? Will he ever find out who truly wants he and his family dead? He knows if he doesn’t return Deirdre MacIntyre he may be starting a clan war. Yet she might be the one to save him and his clan as well. Can she heal his broken heart after all? Will she be worth it? Or will he return her to her husband and keep her away from the little boy who captured her heart forever?
Get your Kleenex out for this emotional roller coaster ride, in this captivating Scottish historical romance! This is Alyssa McLayne’s fourth amazing book that will absolutely blow you away. It is a book I definitely couldn’t put down and cried through quite a few chapters too! I have loved every single book in “The Sons of Gregor MacLeod” series. Honestly, this book is one of the best books j I have read all year! If this were a painting people would call it a masterpiece. This novel was a total masterpiece from start to finish!
Alyson McLayne is definitely one of my favorite authors and each book is even better than the last. Don’t get me wrong as I have loved them all, yet Gavin and Deirdre’s story really pulls your heartstrings, right from the start. You can read them as a stand alone, but your giving your readers heart a disservice if you do. Readers will understand the Laird’s brothership to each other and their relationship to their foster father Gregory MacLeod, much better if you do. Once you read each book and understand their goal. I think it gives readers a better understanding and clearer vision of all the Laird relationships, growing up together since they were boys and their relationship to their foster father too.
Men only seeking peace and harmony in the Highlands, though their foes and enemies are seeking quite the opposite. A fast paced, action-packed, heart pulling, riveting, page turning, romantic, adventure. The setting left me breathless, the dialogue was pure genius and the plotting was absolutely brilliant. Every time I felt I got past one hurdle another plot twist was forming. This book will definitely keep readers on their toes and a hold on their emotions. It is a phenomenal read I can’t recommend enough!
I absolutely and unequivocally recommend this exhilarating book that I imagine everyone like me will love!
I received this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca and Alyson McLayne for a fair and honest review. I voluntarily agreed to read, review, blog and promote through netgalley. All words, ideas and thoughts are my own.
Since being rejected by his late wife and now the disappearance of his beloved son, Ewan, Laird Gavin MacKinnon is a shadow of his former self. He's never given up hope on finding Ewan alive and his search brings him to a woman who claims his son to be hers, despite the fact that he's the spitting image of Gavin, so Gavin takes them both home with him, deciding to deal with the woman later.
Deidre MacIntyre goes willingly with the brooding, dark laid so she can stay with her adopted son. Largely ignored by her husband, Ewan is all Deidre has. Things aren't adding up for Gavin, but the more he gets to know Deidre and sees her interact with Ewan, the less Gavin wants to give her up, even when her clan threatens war to reclaim her.
Deidre really annoyed me for the first half or so of the book, especially when she tried to keep Ewan from Gavin even knowing that was his son. The more she got to know Gavin and open up to him, however, the more I grew to like her and I enjoyed seeing Gavin's character development. This is my second read from this author and I enjoyed it much more than the first, so I'll be following this series more now.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Highland Captive is the 4th book in this series and can be read as a standalone I would encourage you to read the other books first just to understand the bond these 5 fostered clan leaders have.
Laird Gavin MacKinnon's son is missing and feared dead, then word comes that he is alive. Deidre is married and claims her husband's son by another woman as her own. She then sees Gavin is no longer certain that Ewan is her husband's child.
Gavin retrieves Ewan and Deirdre because she refuses to leave Ewan. This begins a journey of distrust between Gavin and Deirdre and possible war with her husband clam.
Ms. McLayne does not disappoint. This book/series has strong & interesting characters with a strong bond. The plot is well-developed with twists and turns. I cannot wait to read the next book.
Highland Captive by Alyson McLayne is brilliantly written from beginning to end. This gripping story is edgy and delivers a deep emotional connection to the characters and their plights. I loved this book for its originality and it’s creative and complex storyline with multiple plots that surprised me and kept me guessing! But, most of all I absolutely loved the author’s expert delivery of strong emotion and for making me literally laughing out loud with witty banter, then take in a deep breath for the steamy slow burn romance that leaves a heated blush! This type of story is my all time favorite! This author is new to me and I’m an instant fan! I recommend this book to everyone who loves a great Highland historical romance rich with excitement, tragedy, danger, intrigue, deception, love, vengeance, loyalty, redemption, and more. This is one of the best romantic historical suspense novels I have read this year.

Spoiler-Free Review
Highland Captive is the 4th installment in The Sons of Gregor MacLeod series. Alyson McLayne is a new-to-me author, so I can attest to the fact that this novel can be read out of series order and as a standalone with little to no confusion. That being said, since I absolutely adored the novel, I can't wait to go back to the beginning to read the series from the start, where I'll be able to accurately express whether or not the emotional payoff would have been better, the connection to the characters deeper, had the series been read in order.
Gut-punch after gut-punch, the author delivered a plethora of emotions throughout the novel, from the lighthearted to the darkest of emotions, and all the levity and banter in between, thanks to a ragtag side cast of characters, who previously had novels of their own and future novels to come.
Original and intriguing, the premise had me hooked from the first paragraph. Deidre is raising a child she herself didn't birth, under the assumption that the child is her husband's bastard... until she comes face to face with a man who is the spirit and image of her son. Terrified to lose the only person who has truly loved her for who she is, Deidre makes a run for home, back to her son.
Gavin didn't make the best of impressions on Deidre, not realizing she would see the anger and frustration as perhaps his son was taken from him to save Ewan from abuse. Once the connections are made, Gavin attempts to rescue his son, not realizing the attachment the boy has on his new mother.
Thrust into close quarters, Deidre and Gavin bond over the love of their son, with a love-hate, enemies-to-lovers, captive and captor vibe that is insanely delicious to devour. Page after page, I couldn't get enough of the intensity and connection between Deidre and Gavin, as the mystery as to why Ewan was stolen from him unravels... along with the mystery as to why Deidre's husband is the way that he is.
The emotions were raw, the actions and reactions of the characters were real, and the pacing and flow was pure perfection, taking the reader on a highland adventure. I cannot wait to sink my teeth into Alyson McLayne's backlist.
Highly recommend to fans of the author and highland historical romance, all the primitive growls and pure masculinity and fiery lasses.
Highland Captive The sons of Gregor MacLeod #4 Alyson MacLeod ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Gavin MacKinnon is Laird who has changed and not for the better either. Ewan, his young son disappeared two years ago and due to this he has become very callous and bitter man. He has never given up on looking for his son and one day he meets a mysterious woman who claims that it is her son and not his even though he looks exactly like his natural father. On a split decision he decides to take the woman and the boy and ask questions later.
Deidre MacIntyre has decided to go with the brooding Laird if it will keep her young son Ewan safe. As Gavin watches and listened he decides that this beautiful lass has a special bond with her son. Then when Dedire's family comes to claim them in the name of war. Gavin has a very big descion to make. Should he let her go back to her family breaking many hearts? Or should he say forget it I want her here?
Alyson MacLeod has written another phenomenal novel. Wow I am unterly astounded. I believe this to be one of her best books yet. Ms. MacLeod you have made my day. This book is a fabulous and brilliant all at the same time.
4.5 stars Highland Captive by Alyson McLayne is book 4 in the Sons of Macleod series. When I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, to read and review this book, the premise sounded intriguing, so I accepted the offer. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.
I quickly became enmeshed in the story from the first page and remained thoroughly entranced until the last. The writing is emotional, and the characters are enthralling. I did have an issue with the storyline, but it did not take away from my overall enjoyment.
I enjoyed Deirdre MacIntyre’s character a great deal, but she does have flaws which makes her human. She is a nurturing mother who will do whatever is needed to protect her son. That’s clear, when she gathers their belongings and flees a gathering. I admired her determination to protect her son since her encounter with Laird Gavin McKinnon leads her to believe he’s violent and could possibly be the father of the child she’s raising as her own.
Laird Gavin McKinnon is a hero to be reckoned with, a brave, menacing warrior at first glance. However, once he has his son, his softer side comes out. He remains the fierce Laird throughout the story as he seeks vengeance against the individuals who kept his son from him for over two years. While he has reason to distrust the woman who’s been raising his son, he recognizes her deep love for Ewan. His desire for her is overwhelming, but his honor keeps him from acting on that desire.
The romance between Deidre and Gavin is complicated. I struggled with the moral dilemma of their attraction. I will refrain from stating what the moral issue is as I don’t want to give anything away, but it is the reason I can’t give a full 5 gold crowns for this remarkable story. However, the chemistry is so strong it’s palpable, and I could understand why they did come close to giving in to it. And of course, the sexual tension is amazing.
If you enjoy a highland romance with plenty of action, a fierce Scottish warrior and a compelling plot, then you will enjoy Highland Captive. While this is the first book I’ve read by Ms. McLayne, it will not be my last. Happy reading!
Glen Moieasdan, Scotland 1453 "Deirdre MacIntyre leaned back against the tent pole and tried to take ten slow, steady breaths-but nothing worked to calm her panic and dread welling up inside her....His eyes...Eyes that promised retribution.. eyes that were the exact same color as her son's." paraphrased a bit. Can you see how this gripped me from the beginning? Deirdre's husband had brought home Ewan a couple of years ago. Claiming it was his son from a former trist and the mother was dead. She could only feel love for the little boy and was determined to give him a happy life, unlike the one she had. But when she sees a large highland warrior that looks like her son, she is in shock and has no doubt it is his real father. She frantically goes home to Ewan to keep him safe. Of course Gavin eventually finds her and takes his son but Deirdre goes with them because to Ewan she is his mother and needs her. His plan is to let her stay for awhile then send her back. But of course it could cause a clan war. The range of emotions in this story was humorous to intense which you could feel coming off the pages. A tangle indeed with Deirdre still married, although she and her husband married when she was 15, they had become friendly but were not in love. A long jouney to a happy ending but Alyson McLayne did an amazing job of sorting everything out and bringing the two together.. A story not to be missed!
Thank you to NetGalley and SourceBooks Casablanca for this ARC.
I have been waiting forever to read this book! I am so glad that I was able to get an ARC for this book. I have been following this series by Alyson McLayne for a while now and I absolutely adore her books and her writing.
Highland Captive was everything that I had been waiting for from this character. I was really looking forward to reading about Gavin's story as the mystery surrounding the disappearance of his son was one I really wanted to unravel. I loved the character of Deirdre, she was a fierce mama-bear who would do anything for her son, even if it meant keeping him away from Gavin. This story was romantic, heartbreaking and emotional. I found myself with tears on my face more than once while reading this book. I especially like how all the characters from the previous books make an appearance in this book too, so we can still read about how the other characters are living their lives. The other mystery part of this book, which is who is causing all this chaos in these characters lives, still remains a mystery which I think will be revealed (finally) in the next installment. I cannot wait for the next book in this series! I seriously recommend this book to any of my fellow Scottish/highland romance lovers, it is sure to be one that you enjoy!
What an impossible situation when Deirdre sees a man who has her son's eyes but is a brute to her - so she does what any good mother would do and runs. Gavin has been searching for his son for two years and those two years have hardened him and his friends and family con't like this new version of him.
And to add to the drama is Isobel and Kerr's strange relationship where you are not sure that they even like each other but boy do the sparks fly when they interact!
When Gavin finally gets past his jealousy of the love that his son has for Deirdre, he strives to do what is best for his son's welfare even if he still is like a stranger to his son. Good thing that Deirdre also wants the best for Ewan and helps him adjust to the new situation.
The back story continues with the attacks against this group of brothers and while they still don't have any answers, it seems like they might be pointed in the right direction and may resolve this conflict.
Kind of suspected that there was more to Lewis and his story but not what was revealed! Glad that he was finally able to set things right for himself and Deirdre and they all got their HEA.
I enjoyed this story so much, I didn't want it to end!!! This author sure knows how to capture your attention from start to end and it proves again why I love my Highlanders so much.
Laird Gavin MacKinnon has become a tortured soul, searching for his young son who went missing over 2 years earlier. I can't even imagine going through that, not knowing where your child is or even if he's still alive. When he finally finds him, he also finds out that Deidre MacIntyre has been raising the child as her own and they have a bond that cannot be broken.
There is heartache, decisions to be made, danger, humor (his foster brothers are a riot!), intrigue, as well as a slow burn romance between Gavin and Deidre. Everything you could ever want in a historical romance!!
I was given an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
