Lust at first sight Phoenix spots the tall, dark and dangerously sexy man in line behind him at the club immediately. He thinks he's found a dance partner for the night, but the stranger has other plans. Jax has worked his entire life to become the best sourcer on Akar, maybe even in all of Zila Galaxy. He specializes in finding things, and if the money is right, he and his loyal crew are there. Except, this mission has sent them farther than they've gone before, to Earth.
Grows into an unbreakable bond It's not personal, Phoenix just happened to be what Jax's client requested. He’s not a person, he’s cargo. Except, the moment Jax gets Phoenix on his ship, he can't help but care for and protect the Earthling. It wouldn't be so bad if the client who requested Phoenix—as well as the other specimens with his unique genetic mutation—didn't happen to be the Akarian Federation. The AkarFed rules its people with an iron fist and they couldn’t care less about Jax’s burgeoning feelings.
Phoenix may be in space, with no hope of returning to his home, but he is nobody’s victim. All he needs to do is ignore the alien captain long enough to figure out a way home. But, with each passing moment—and mile—that gets harder to do. As their connection grows, Jax discovers they are more than just cargo and captain, they are fated mates, now he just needs to figure out how to keep them together.
One of my favorite mpreg shifter authors has created a new series that's sci-fi! How exciting!
I thought that the world building in this was really interesting - there is the Akarian Federation, which keeps everyone in line and heavily controlled in many aspects of life. Jax had to buy his freedom from them, and now he's trying to buy the freedom for the rest of his friends and works as a sourcer, retrieving things - people - that the Akarian's request.
Phoenix is requested by a client, so Jax goes to retrieve him. He doesn't know that by doing so, he's found his perfect mate, and discovered what the Akarian world wanted to keep secret. I love that part of the story, I would love to see more development in people taking back their own rights. I also loved how strong Phoenix was, and how he was determined to get himself and his friend, Tannish, back home. He was a fighter and refused to give up fighting. Loved how he kept saying he didn't want to fall for Jax in a Stockholm Syndome/Beauty and the Beast type of way! (because, of course he does!)
There is plenty of spark between Jax and Phoenix, we get to meet Jax's friends, Enzo especially I think will be the next book along with Phoenix's friend, Tannish, and plenty of action, space-travels, enemies, and some peril.
Can't wait for the next book in this series!
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Not the book’s fault. 😅 I just can’t get into it. 🤷♀️ I love Kiki burrelli but I am not feeling this one. So as usual for almost all my DNF books, this one will receive 3 stars. Might pick this up again in the future. Who knows? 😌
I was a little surprised by this work from Kiki Burrelli.
In the beginning of the book I was so lost with what was going on that I wanted to stop reading but I forced myself to continue reading. I was glad that I did. I like how she has built this world where an alien species can mate with humans. I also liked her joking about alien abductions and experiments.
Jax and Phoenix were the perfect mix of contradictions. The struggles that they went through denying themselves was written perfectly. I'm now looking forward to book two about Tannish and Enzo. To see how they faired by themselves for so long. What will we find???
****I received this ARC from his author for my honest and unbiased review****
I agreed to read this book as an ARC for Kiki Burrelli, mainly because I'm a huge fan of her books. I'm typically not a fan of the kidnap and make you mine sorta book. This book, while it has some of those elements doesn't go quite go there. The element of fated mates is there instead and a main character that has morals that out way his baser desires. So if your hesitant to get this book based on that element I would say your going to be pleasantly surprised and it's definitely worth reading. For those who are familiar with her books I think you'll recognize a lot of the same sense of community and the start of a whole new world being built. Also I see a bit of Pippen in Phoenix he's definitely not a copy of Pippen but seems to have his fight and protective streak. I'm very excited to see where this series goes. By the end of the book I could see so many possibilities I can hardly wait to see what happens next!
FYI: I received this book as an ARC for my honest review. I also have KU so I don't see this making a difference one way or the other.
I should have known better, but i have to admit I was just a touch….not nervous. Anxious? I don't know. Antsy maybe. I love sci-fi. I love just about anything I can get my hands on, but I saw a convo in passing about tentacles and I was kind of like. Hmm. Now I'm not knocking that. At all. If you love it, love it. I was apprehensive because of a previous book I had read about tentacles. But anyway, this was good. Like I said, I should have known better. Kiki writes some damn good book and this, I think, was off to a good start for a series.
Phoenix, Billy and Tannish are just looking for a night in a new place. A new club. Something to break them out of their rut. But they were getting nowhere with this line and assholes with mouths were coming out of the woodwork. Phoenix has his eye on a gorgeous man but the taint of jeers interrupts him. After defending his friends, they all move to leave, when Mr. Hottie gets them in the club. Before Phoenix knows it though, he's being kidnapped and so is Tannish. He refused to go down without a fight, but Jax is too much for him and next thing he knows, he's in outer space. Being known as cargo and nothing else doesn't sit well with Phoenix. He's determined to rescue Tannish and escape. He almost succeeds several times too. But Jax locks him away. After a scorching kiss.
Jax doesn't know what's wrong with him. This humanoid is only supposed to be cargo. Nothing more. But something about Phoenix is drawing him in and he has yet to figure out why. He tries to withhold the growing emotions but he can't keep Phoenix away from him. And from the looks of Phoenix’s health, Jax needs to keep an eye on him. With his mixed signals, he has Phoenix not knowing which way is up and it's hitting like a physical blow. Jax meets an old friend to find out why he is reacting the way he is and what he is told hits him with a blow he's not quite sure how to handle. Especially when he finds out more about what's really going on. All he knows is Phoenix is his mate. His other half and he will do anything he can to keep Phoenix safe. And that's a battle in itself.
Phoenix is my spirit animal lol. I know he's human but damn. That boy can fight. He takes no shit. He might go down but he's not going down without a fight. He's so loyal to his friends. He protects them anyway he can. When he's kidnapped all he can think of is Tannish. Trying to get to him to make sure he's ok. Good qualities. He's a sweetheart underneath too. He has a strong exterior and he is tough but he's also a teddy bear and can get hurt quite easily. I felt so bad for him. His body was messing up. The alien that kidnapped him kept throwing him weird signals and his only little friend seems to be a ferret like animal who slimes everywhere. If he could just escape. That tenacity. He never gives up. He never stops trying. I admire him.
Jax….I don't know if that boy knows whether he's coming or going lol. He's all messed up. Before Phoenix, his job was to just do jobs to make more money and free slaves. But Phoenix opened his eyes to how things really were. He was just picking up cargo to make more slaves. Jax was starting to see a whole new side to things. Especially after he talked to his friend, Zaxis. And his life was about to get super complicated lol. But he feels he needs to right things. That's a great quality. When someone shows you the error of your ways, you have two choices. Keep going or change and make it better. It's never easy but he's trying to make it better.
This is a really good book. Espionage, betrayals, manipulations by governments. Plus hot sexy men having hot sexy sex. Woohoo! Lol
There was a lot to love with this book. I loved that Phoenix was self sufficient and was able to protect himself and his friends throughout the story. I loved that Jax didn't know anything about mating and so his first reaction was to distrust his instincts and did everything that he could to distance himself from Phoenix.
In the end, I loved that Jax and Phoenix were able to learn to trust one another and find a purpose for themselves and their friends.
I actually thought this book real winner at first, a good plot line, a lot of humor, a strange fluffy alien animal/pet (that’s always a win in my book).
That guy looks like he'd murder you and keep your balls in a box under his pillow along with his other trophies." Billy often had a way with words.
Jax smiled. Phoenix had said we're going to. We're. "Why are you smiling? Did you hit your head too?" Phoenix asked, his eyes shining.
"Take me? Did I knock my head and wake up in a regency romance? Are you a rakish duke? No, my Lord, you will not be taking me." Phoenix
Ok... kind of funny, enough to keep me interested.
And then our MCs figure out they are fated and everything just gets awkward and the writing seemed to have less thought out into it. Jax smiled contently. "Perfect pair, remember? I was about to ask you the same thing."
Jax's heated expression told Phoenix that his alien might be going through something similar. "Perhaps, it's another quality of our perfect pair? I feel alive, strong. Every touch is heightened."
Idk maybe it doesn’t sound awkward in that little tidbit, but it seemed hela awkward while reading it considering the fact that they are in the middle of sexy fun time and about to bone...
And as I said before, I though from that point on everything just didn’t work. The romance was bland, even for a dated mate story. The plot was good but I felt there was a lot of filler.
This book has me gripping tightly on my.. pillow.. every second at every scene. Starting from the beginning, it was already intense, and I found myself holding my breath when the scene was too much intense. You bet you know which scene, or rather which scenes I was talking about.
So, from the beginning.. can I just say that you got me at that personality test "How gay are you?" Really, Phoenix? That was.. how should I say it? Witty? Phenomenon? I don't even know. But I liked that scene, especially when that freaking oaf happened *cackles* I'm glad Phoenix handled that very well.. well he had some help with that handsome stanger (alien?), of course. But yeah, Phoenix got some mad skills. There goes the Krav Maga. And there goes my plan a long time ago to learn it.
Phoenix and Jax *sighs dreamily* they're so cute, adorable and sweet towards each other. After they got their sh*t sorted out, of course.
There was a lot of stubbornness and hard-headedness, and misunderstandings from the beginning. There's a lot of times I wanna shake Jax because why is he like that? But he is so dreamy, I forgive him easily. And he was just totally lost and confused at his feelings *poor baby* Then there was Phoenix acting like a wild animal when they got into the ship, but well.. I couldn't really blame him. I only blame him when he got too impulsive and think he can get away from the ship. Look at what happened. I really want to say to him "I told you so" while I'm shaking my head forlornly. He really shouldn't had done that.
*whispers* poor Tannish and Enzo.
I laughed at that scene where Jax goes to the cargo and heard Phoenix crooning and got jealous. Yeah, he got it bad, but of course, he's still in the in denial mode. So amusing. Especially when it was only the baby pheril. Let me tell you that creature is so stinking cute. Except the slime they produce, of course. I'm sure they agree with me, especially poor Phoenix. I'm not sure how I feel towards the pherils evolution, though. That's just wow.
I'm not gonna make this any longer than it was. I'm just gonna spoil a lot of things and just gonna zip my mouth and say well done Kiki Burrelli! You made another epic book and world again. The idea of the aliens in the galaxy and having perfect pairs? Just amazing. Especially each pairs having gifts? I was blown away. If I thought we couldn't have more tropes in a story.. well I was so wrong. The world you built in the story, how you described it.. the Akar Major, the Akar Minor, the damn corrupt AkarFed, the Poplot system, the Akarians, especially the crew. The planet Seea and that little sh*t, self entitled Andromedan Prince whom I still want to strangle every time I reread the story.
The other characters are so amusing and loveable in their own ways, of course. Not that I could forget them. Wren.. I just want to cuddle him and put him inside my pocket for protection. Not sure if he's gonna like that though. And there's the brooding, brash, Vrak. Zaxis.. you gotta love the guy, or alien as he is, and his mate Poppy, and their humble swampy abode. There's gonna be some surprised addition to the crew at the ending, though, so you need to look at that. And of course, not to forget! the ever adorable, little Davix! Can't wait for more books in the series!
*** A copy of CARGO was kindly provided by the Author in exchange for an honest review.
I agreed to read this as an ARC. I don't usually do that anymore, but I do love Kiki's books so I decided to volunteer.
To me, this is the most well rounded book that I think Kiki has had to start a new series. Not that any of her books are bad, but when you create a Sci-Fi world, you have to make up a world and a background, which requires more thought.
Each of the characters in the story have their own potential to be great in the crew that stole Phoenix from Earth. They are a good loyal crew for reasons you will find out in the story.
The unknown elements on the ship, and in the background, added to the story in surprising ways. I always like when I find out unexpected things that further the story, and the future of a series in unsual ways or during scenes where you least expect it.
I love how Kiki didnt throw a bunch of technical babble at me, like I was reading a Engineers manual. The less talk about how the ship runs the better in my book.
The plot twists on Phoenix's journey made it more interesting to me than other fillers that have been in other books by other authors. I hope to find out more about the world Jax came from, and AkarFed and their evil plots.
I can't wait to read the next book which is sure to find wayward crew members and friends, and more about the evil plots afoot in Book 1. Great start to a new series!
This author has a unique style of writing that brings the characters to vivid life and you will not put this book down until the last page is turned. It is about: a young man (Phoenix) who is out with friends at a bar and meets a good-looking man (Jax) who promptly abducts him and a friend (Tannish) because of some mutated DNA that a client requires, but Jax never realized what the repercussions of the abduction would lead to. There is: aliens, Akarian federation, an alien prince, old friends, friendship, danger, enemies, adventure, action, intrigue, suspense, twists & turns, abduction, defiance, physical conflict, threats, attractions, emotional feelings, misconception, fear, sarcasm, verbal conflict, desire, possessiveness, mates, apologies, trust, memories, verbal banter, unexpected surprise, conflict, happiness, trust & steamy scenes. The characters are intriguing with individual personalities, the story-line and plot is well-written and entertaining, it certainly kept my attention. I enjoyed reading this marvelous, enthralling Sci-fi MM alien romance & really would recommend this book.
This is an amazing start to a new series and I love everything about it. I was captivated from the very first page and I could not put it down. It is well-written, fast-paced, the characters are so vivid, the world building is excellent and it has an intriguing storyline. I love Phoenix and his unwavering loyalty to those he loves. He is feisty, out-spoken, compassionate and a talented fighter. Jax is a former slave who managed to get himself and his friends free against impossible odds. He will do anything to keep Phoenix and his friends safe from the AkarFed. Phoenix and Jax have an incredible connection and even though they both fight their attraction they soon find themselves unable to stay away from each other. The many obstacles in their way seem to be insurmountable but with the help of their friends they will fight to stay together. The secondary characters are great and I love the ending. There are many unexpected twists and turns in this unique and compelling take on Sci-Fi and I can't wait to read the next book in this fabulous new series.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Wow what a great first book in this new series. This book started straight off at a run. There was no fumbling about - no weird back story - you were just thrust straight into the life of Phoenix as he and his friends are waiting in line to get into the club "Sparkle" (I so want to go to to that club) and that's where the action starts - and it doesn't let up until the very last page - as it drags you along an intergalactic roller coaster ride that has so many twists and turns and along the way you get to meet so many interesting aliens and animals (aren't all non humans aliens regardless if they're people type aliens or animal type aliens? Just a thought) Anyway I blooming loved this book from start to finish there wasn't anything I didn't love. And I can see me waiting impatiently for the next in the series (without giving away any spoilers) I can't wait!!!!! I voluntarily reviewed this book for an honest review
Kiki Burrelli is an auto-buy for me, so when I read she was starting a science fiction series, I was truly excited! You see, having read her other series, and experiencing her talent at creating a different paranormal universe from the one we all inhabit, I trusted she could do the same incredible job with a sci-fi one. And she did! Over in the Zila Galaxy, there are wonders and dangers galore. And she even works in Mpreg in a way that comes as a surprise to the two men involved but brings the same great joy we've seen before. This book does have an HEA ending as to the romances possibility but it also sets up some of the possible future stories we'll be seeing. At this one's end, the crew is about to go off on a new adventure that could be life-threatening as well as terribly fulfilling. Can't wait until the next book to see what happens next!
Phoenix is out at a club with friends when he meets the sexy and mysterious Jax. He never expected the man was an alien or that they would kidnap him and his friend, Tannish. He has a certain DNA mutation that someone requested HJax and his crew to get. Well, if these aliens thought it would be an easy job, they have another thing coming.
Oh, this is an amazingly entertaining story. A unique story that captivates you and brings you into a new world filed with colorful characters. Jax and Phoenix form a bond and are so flippin' hot together. I can not wait to read more from this series.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation
Tsk, tsk, tsk. This is awful. Okay, alien kidnaps human. Alien is very humanoid (thank god, I hate tentacle sex). Human fights back but falls hard for alien who in turn, falls immediately for human. I could handle it if it was just hard, physical sex. You know, alien is gorgeous and human wants a piece before offing him. But no, they fall in love. I suppose this is easier than actually creating 3 dimensional characters, developing their relationship and having them fall in love for a reason. The creatures and the universe described in this novel are creative and fun. But the basic love story plot is awful if not non-existent. This ruined the book for me. Sorry, but I cannnot recommend this for even the slowest, poor weather evening’s reading. It has zero love story points.
Reason for DNF: - The main character and love interest are both overly chatty, conversing in paragraph-long infodumps of personal backstory, despite having just met via kidnapping a couple of pages ago. - The insta-lust also didn't work for me. Neither of them have been physically described in any detail; haven't indicated any sexual interest in each other; met literally minutes ago; and are standing in a barn-like cargo hold surrounded by alien animal poop. There is zero sexual tension going on before they lock lips. Needless to say, this fell flat. - The main character seems a bit like a mouthpiece for the author's personal Woke Points, but that might be due to the conversational info-dumping mentioned above.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
First of all this is a love story. Well written, with Phoenix an earthling and Jax, the alien that kidnaps him. From this unexpected beginning comes an adventure with hostile aliens, an all powerful federation, a cute alien pet and a powerful love story. There are no shifters but there are 'perfect pairs', basically alien fated mates. This would stand as an exciting space adventure without the love story and mpreg. With them it is the start of an exciting journey full of unknown dangers and rewards. I can't wait for the next chapter and neither should you.
I was in a lull, starting books and not finishing them. I had thought of just rereading books I had enjoyed before but on a whim I kept randomly clicking book suggestions until I ended up on the listing for this book. The premise seemed interesting enough. Thus I decided to give it a shot.
The first plus I noticed was I liked the characters. The second was I could picture the places, even smell them. The third was when I found myself worried over what would happen.
I read this book fast and wanted more when it was over. I laughed, teared up, got mad and worried over these characters. Well done story. I'm glad I found it.
I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to book #2. Its a sweet space romance but not the Stockholm Syndrome type books.. lol and I just love little Pheril... this is just a great Sci-fi M/M book. There are a couple laps in the story flow where they feel a little rushed but It dose not take away from the store over much... and i cant wait to meet Poppy's son Gaston in a future book... fingers crossed. I have hope that the following books will be about the other lovely crew members... Happy Reading
Very different from Kiki usually. But awesome. I liked her different world idea. I also like the way Jax and phoneix started out. Even though he was captured it wasn't a "beauty and beast" moment. It was just mutual respect and fate. It was different. Can't wait , can't freaking wait for tannish story. I freaking hope Billy comes back. I can just imagine how that would go! Mwhahahha.
Addicting I'm usually not a big fan of Alien books, but figured I'd give this one a try since Kiki is my absolute favorite author. I'm so glad that I did. I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read more books in this series. This book will have your emotions on a rollercoaster. You will be on the edge of your seat and won't be able to put the book down. I highly recommend reading this book and you definitely won't be disappointed if you do.
Whew! I love this one! It has more action and critical moment lol! At first, I thought it will be like this: meet with alien-being save by them-and fall in love, but I'm wrong! You do a great job with the plotwist Kiki! It's good to see both Phoenix and Jax fight their feeling for each other until they're realize the truth :") I really love it! Can't wait to see how things will work for Enzo and Tannish :3 thanks for your hardwork Kiki!
DNF'd it. Surprised I even reached 60% with it hence why I gave it 2 stars instead of usually 1 when I DNF books.
Got tired of the inconsistencies. The characters were either flat or trying too hard and most of the dialogue are just childish and too 'quirky' to be coming from supposedly adults. Plus the aliens are too 'human' to be aliens, other than their physical traits, they are just basically space-faring EARTH HUMANS.
Phoenix and Jax met at a night club. Sounds cute, right? Well, wait until Phoenix realizes that the hot guy is an alien that was sent to "source" him. In other words, kidnap. So, these two have a little tiny bit of anger going on even while their chemistry starts working on them. The road, or should I say flight, that they have to manage to get to their HEA is beyond insane but it's a ride that you should take.
The secondary characters are amazingly well thought out and add to the story. I cannot wait to read the next one!
Well this was quite unique and very interesting. I enjoyed watching the emotional changes and growth between Phoenix and Jax (mates or perfect pair). I didn't really like the whole Akar federation concept (or a planet of slaves that should be rescued) but other than that, the romance was sweet and sexy. The characters were very likable and I'm curious to see where or how this journey goes. Fascinating.
Pretty sure this is her first alien romance. But she did an awesome job for sure. Loved Jax and Phoenix’s banter. And I love that the “omega” in the relationship wasn’t helpless. He can fight and his tongue can be as sharp as his fists. Can’t wait to read more. As always I was riveted and couldn’t put it down.
A wonderful start to a new series. Jax and Phoenix are great together even though Jax tries to distance himself from Phoenix at the beginning because he doesn’t trust his instincts. It was great watching Jax and Phoenix slowly begin to trust and love each other throughout the story. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
I am generally not a fan of sci-fi and had put off reading this book for that reason. But I love the author’s other books so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did! It is a wonderful, unique book with a fascinating world and really great characters. Looking forward to book 2.
Wow! I loved this so much, I really didn’t want it to end! So now I’ll be waiting impatiently on the next book... Phoenix and Jax are amazing and they’re going to do amazing things! Wonderful story with some really awesome characters and world building. I got my sci-fi adventure and my mpreg all in one book, and with more to come, yay!
