Em, a young painter armed with a sarcastic tongue and the ability to pull delicious espresso shots, has moved across the country to shed her past and lose herself in her artistic process. One night the painting she's been working on for months comes to life, its presence causing her to question the decisions she's made and her relationship with reality. Is this creature merely a work of art, or something else entirely? As the creature travels through Em's world and she is drawn ever deeper into its own reality, they both unearth secrets about each other and the worlds around them.
Andy Reynolds is an author of magical realism, fantasy, and science fiction, and a sculptor of robot puppets. He has published three novels and a book of short stories and poetry, and has read on stages across New Orleans. He strives with his work to show the potential in each of us, as well as the magic and wonder that can be experienced in the ordinary, everyday world.
Beautifully written. Full of colorful, charming characters that are real enough you can practically smell them. I love how this author comes up with unusual magical physics, leading to really strange, surreal situations, but doesn't back down from describing them in detail. You wind up with a truly unique experience when you breeze through this fairly short, fiercely imaginative story exploring personal relationships and the creative process. With not-entirely-imaginary friends and muses lurking around.
So this is one of those books that I've had in standby for quite some time because it was a little bit too intense. Too strong emotion, requiring too much attention. it is so good that today, just reading the title I am brought back in the world again.
Really good writing, really well done. I've stopped on January at 84%. Maybe I could give it another chance shortly.
