Last Chance Ranch #1

Her Last First Kiss

Rate this book
A cowgirl down on her luck hires a man who's good with horses and under the hood of a car. Can Hudson fine tune Scarlett's heart as they work together? Or will things backfire and make everything worse at Last Chance Ranch?

Scarlett Adams has had enough. Enough of men breaking her heart. Enough of her boss saying she needs to do better. Enough of the traffic and hustle of the city. So when the opportunity to take over her grandfather's horse ranch in the hills of California comes along, she jumps at it. She'd rather spend her time with horses, dogs, and goats than honking cars, power suits, and men who don't call back.

And she's finally happy.

Hudson Flannigan knows three horses, cars, and that he's never going to make his father proud. Not only that, but he's disappointed his mother too. Well, his ex-wife did that when she found someone else to love, but its somehow Hudson's fault.

When Scarlett needs help getting the rundown ranch back into shape, she hires Hudson to get all the vehicles into proper working order. The spark between them is instant and hot, but neither of them wants to endure another painful breakup.

Can Scarlett and Hudson find the faith and forgiveness they need to fix themselves as they restore Last Chance Ranch to its former glory? Or will this fine-tuning of their hearts backfire and leave them more broken than before?

This was a nice enough story so I am not sure why I wanted to stop reading at different times. Even when I was at 51%, I considered stopping.

I wondered about hiring all those people when Scarlet kept saying she had no money to work with. She seemed to be getting ahead of herself trying to please the animal rescue people but illogically so. I wondered at two millionaires (what are the chances?) working on a farm at the same time in a small corner of the world. I wondered at Alene being successfully uber secretive in such a small place. I wondered at the eight months engagement when they were waiting for marriage and couldn't keep their hands and lips to themselves. I wondered at an otherwise responsible guy like Hudson just dropping off the radar for three weeks without even a text. I wondered at Scarlet going farm to farm. I wondered at Gramps and his dementia vs how the farm looked--hoarding, yes, but I would imagine the whole place, including the animals, would have been severly neglected--one old guy (with a few volunteers and Sawyer). Plus, who had lined up the volunteers and when and who hired Sawyer who only came occasionally? How could Gramps manage a place with his dementia that took a dozen people just to maintain?

Man this book was rough in spots in terms of character yer development and inconsistencies. She was so insecure but then also was secure enough to buy her own engagement ring with his card after knowing him for 2-3 months? Damn.

This is a very good Christian book. I loved the name of the ranch—Last Chance Ranch. Scarlett was a hard worker with a good heart. Her grandfather was getting older and asked her to take over the ranch. Scarlett and her friend Adele were ready to get out of Los Angeles. The ranch was a mess since no one has been keeping it up, and Scarlett didn’t have much money to fix it up, but she was determined. I felt bad that Scarlett had gone through so much with her ex husband. Especially since she was off men, and didn’t feel like someone would love her especially since she wasn’t small. I felt like it was God leading Hudson to her ranch to help out. He was still trying to get over a cheating ex wife. He is a good man, a hard worker, and has a lot of experience in areas that Scarlett needed help. I enjoyed watching the ranch turn around, Scarlett’s Gramps being helped, and all the exciting things happening on the ranch. I encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.

Happy this was a freebie and while it wasn't a bad story it wasn't a great one either. The writing was simplistic as was the story. The idea of having a rescue ranch could have been full of touching stories
of people/animal rescues and it seem to begin that way. Why the author introduced millionaires I don't know. It didn't enhance the story, didn't make it more interesting, and if the two characters were down on their luck it would have been better for the story.

DNF
I skimmed most of the book, because it didn’t keep my attention.

I also didn’t care for Adele, so I won’t be reading her book.

I regret finishing this even if I wanted to put it down, because unfortunately it didn't get any better.

The characters were flat, and their love story is based mainly on the fact that they're both divorced? Or at least that was my impression. Also, Scarlett clearly feels insecure and wants to lose weight, and I'm not judging her for this, but I just feel like the body positivity message fell into the "You can love yourself when you lose some pounds or when a man says he loves you just the way you are". I wish she talked more about her body and what she wanted for herself, and less about other's opinions.

And it wasn't realistic, I'm sorry but this just triggered me so much 😅 She keep saying she doesn't have any money, but she keeps hiring new people? The ranch was doing fine even if, given granpa's conditions, it should have been heavily neglected? Two millionaire cowboys at the same ranch, what are the chances? He hasn't spoken with his family for ages, and then "Oh, I'm sorry we treated you bad all your life for no reason at all" "It's okay, let's all eat together like a perfect family" That scene was so weird tbh 🚩 🚩 🚩

And Adele, I liked her - creative, smart, a good friedn! - but the "I hate rich men" attitude was so immature, girl what you're an adult 😖 The way she treated Carson at the beginning, when he was still a total stranger, was just so rude.

🐎 I liked the ranch setting and the spiritual side, and I feel like I could have enjoyed this if the story had been a little different. Some obstacles, hardships, a bit more character's depth maybe. There were a lot of descriptions of the ranch and the animals, but they didn't feel like a part of the story? Like they were just put there to lengthen the book.

First time

My first book by this author. It had promise that was never fulfilled. The characters were very one sided and somewhat immature. I didn’t hate the story, I just didn’t love it. It has taken skimming and several attempts to finish it.

I'm finding I enjoy Liz Isaacson's writing style. She keeps her stories clean and inspirational without them being preachy. She also pays attention to details when it comes to her characters and their professions. They are usually well-fleshed out and their backstories match how they are presented in the story's present time.
This tale was no different. I truly enjoyed reading this story. The path from past to present, from despair to hope, from dying dreams to beautiful reality kept me turning virtual pages. If you enjoy reading stories written with skill and consistency, stories which are clean and inspirational, and stories with happy endings, you should give this one a try.

Romance, clean; series but stand alone read
LI is always a favorite read! More of a 3.5 for me as a reader. Genuine honest characters with past hurts that gradually open up to each other, and learn to trust and love again. Both Scarlett and Hudson have worries and secrets. As they each help each other and figure out their present and work on their future, their sweet fall is beautiful to read. Great side characters, and with the back story and their pasts, a lovely read.

Nice story ,

But --- there were a few places within the book that seemed to be missing. One in particular was toward the end on his birthday. They were in his kitchen for breakfast, then left for the birthday party for ribs, etc. ????? Which normally would be for dinner!?? Nothing explaining the time lapse in between. I still did enjoy the story and will still like to go next to the second in this series, hoping there won't be more of that in the next ones.

Faking a service dog is a no go for me. Almost DFNd it right then but I decided to keep going.
Besides that turn off... I kinda felt the book was too rushed and too drawn out at the same time. And I really wasn't impressed with the character development.

Interesting premise, rehabbing an aging rescue ranch for animals, but I found it slow reading because I didn't really connect with any of the characters.

📚THE STORY📚

Scarlett has left behind a life that brought her more frustration than fulfillment - a divorce, a high stress job - to help her grandfather on his ranch. Last Chance Ranch has plenty of animals and buildings, but since Gramps lost his wife and his health, it's fallen into disrepair.

Scarlett hires mechanic and handyman Hudson to help out. With his loyal dog Hound at his side, Hudson brings a gentlemanly charm to his work, and Scarlett finds herself drawn to the handsome ranch hand.

But Scarlett is self conscious about her own desirability, and has been burned by men before. Can she open herself to love again, or will she miss her "last chance"?

💕THE ROMANCE💕

Hudson is a sweetheart, always ready to show up in whatever way Scarlett needs. Their time together involves caretaking for Gramps and ranch chores while they flirt and get to know each other. He showers her with compliments, particularly about her body, which she is shy about.

Hudson is also nursing heartbreak, but he falls for her quickly and wants her to follow him down that slippery slope toward love. The primary conflict in their relationship focuses on this impatience vs. her slowness. Especially because their faith means that they don't want to be physically intimate until they're married, this brings a sort of pressure to the romance.

✝️FAITH ELEMENTS✝️

Both characters are Christian, and they frequently pray and attend church, though specifics and details are often waved over. Both are clear about the fact that they don't want to be physically intimate unless they are married, and this drives the romance toward its conclusion.

📝MY THOUGHTS📝

I loved the way the characters are both older, mature adults who have lived plenty of life and know themselves. They feel their emotions strongly, but generally behave like adults. The details of the ranch were so much fun - I mean, baby goat yoga!? Friendly dogs? An animal rescue subplot? Heck yes!

Hudson's handy-ness with cars and other things around the ranch makes him even more attractive and enriches the setting. Delicious food is ever present, too, which I love in a book. Helping an older family member with their property is so relatable, and I loved the addition of another romantic side plot with Scarlett's bff.

This is a cute book for people who don't like spice.

That being said, I didn't really enjoy it, there were multiple times I wanted to DNF it. For these reasons:
-The conversations felt wooden. It sort of read as an emotionless ping-pong match. There was no inflection in the characters aside from when the author smacked the readers with Scarlette's insecurities. Even the emotions behind them kissing and whatnot just fell flat.
-The MCs are in their forties... But mentally, they act like kids. I don't know if it's just because I'm so used to spicy romances or not, but the way Hudson felt the need to walk away from the whole situation because after eight weeks of kissing alone was enough for him to be like, 'she needs to be my wife or nothing at all' REALLY pulled me out of the story.
-The story wasn't believable. There was a huge focus on how FMC couldn't afford to hire so many people, yet went ahead and did so anyways... And what are the chances that not one, but TWO insanely rich guys would come to work on a little ranch? I don't know. Just seemed excessive and not realistic.
-It seemed like everything always just magically worked out? There wasn't enough strife aside from the unimpressive self-inflicted issues in their little love life.
-Chatacter development was pretty much non-existent.

But anyways, don't let me deter you from reading it. It was cute if you're not looking for a book that will really grip you. Quick read too.

This is an interesting stand-alone book. That said, if you choose to, you can read the series to find out how the minor characters’ lives progress. Only 30 miles away from her previous home and job, Scarlett Adams’ new life is completely different now that she has inherited her grandfather’s ranch. Last Chance Ranch is home not only to her grandfather, but to a variety of animals.

Scarlett is busy trying to clean up the ranch, including not only the homestead she and her grandfather share, but what seems like a plethora of cabins. She pushes herself to get the work done (on a very limited budget) so she can apply for a grant to make the ranch into an animal sanctuary. She desperately needs help taking care of the animals and improving the buildings and grounds.

When Hudson Flannigan shows up, how can Scarlett possibly deny him a job? It’s not his fault he is such a handsome cowboy! Although Scarlett tries to keep her emotional distance from this stranger, the sparks are flying in both directions. Coming out of disastrous marriages, they are both wary of getting hurt again. It is interesting to see what becomes of not only the ranch and its many animals, but of the characters who are in need of their own healing.

Scarlett and Hudson

Scarlett is at her grandfather's ranch, The Last Chance Ranch, after having been officially divorced for six months! She is trying her best to get it cleaned up and in working order so she can present it to Forever Friends as an animal rescue ranch. The only thing she misses from her marriage is her fur babies Billy and Bob her dogs that Vance got to keep in the settlement. She loves Gramps and loves being there for him. She just needs to figure out how to get the old vehicles running and off the place before Forever Friends comes. Hudson finds a dog out on the road and hopes he's bringing it back to it's correct home when he meets Scarlett! Well after talking some, she realizes that he may be just what she had been praying for. He just sold his repair shop about a year ago and he agrees to fix "Prime" her mailbox! Do things go smoothly for these two divorced people? Will their insecurities get in the way of their finding their way to each other? So many obstacles and misunderstandings to get in the way! Liz Isaacson has done an excellent job of writing this story. You can even identify with the characters!

Last Chance Ranch

I loved this heartwarming love story of Scarlett and Hudson. The characters, both human and animals, were delightful. Scarlett moved in with her Grandpa to take care of him and to restore his ranch to become an animal sanctuary. Gramps was a hoarder so that was the first project on Scarlett's list. Hudson showed up one day to return a dog he had found that had escaped the ranch. Scarlett hired him to help with the cleanup and to fix up several broken down vehicles on the property that they could sell. The ranch was the home for horses, cows, llamas, pot bellied pigs, cats, dogs, and goats. During their cleanup and restoration with the help of Adele, Scarlett's best friend, who also lives in a cabin at the ranch and two men Scarlett hired, Sawyer and Carson, Scarlett and Hudson started dating. Both were divorced and in their 40's so they were both shocked to find out they loved each other. The ending was perfect. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy a clean romance. Liz Isaacson is a great western romance author and I look forward to reading more of her books.

I received a free copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I loved this book. It is refreshing to see a book about a plus sized woman and how she has a hard time believing a handsome rich man would be able to love her the way she is and not want to always be looking for someone prettier, or skinnier. Scarlett moved to the Last Chance Ranch after her divorce was final and took it over from her gramps. She was hoping to get it cleaned up and ready for an animal rescue partnership but she couldn't do it alone. Hudson happened along at just the right time when one of her dogs got out and he brought it back. As they work together they start to have feelings for each other but Scarlet is afraid he will always be looking for someone better like her ex did. Will she be able to get out of her own head and start to believe that he actually likes her just the way she is? Can she start to like herself the way she is? Will she be able to admit that she really loves him before it is too late to get him back?

Scarlett Adams escapes from her life in the city with her now ex-husband and takes over management of her grandfather’s ranch, Last Chance Ranch. She would much rather deal with dogs, cats, horses, and goats than the crowds and noise of city life. But she can’t do it alone. When Hudson Flannigan appears in her driveway with one of her dogs in tow, he appears to be an answer to her prayers.

They both have issues that will complicate their relationship, both professional and personal. Scarlett is not a skinny ingenue. She’s an adult (40+) with curves and some body image issues while trying to save a neglected ranch that holds precious memories for her. Hudson is also an adult with issues – a cheating wife with resulting divorce and estrangement from his family. They need to work together to make the ranch and their lives a success.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, particularly because the characters are mature, but still with complications to resolve and the ability to fall in love again.
I received this book as an ARC. My opinion is my own.

Last Chance Ranch

This is a story of Scarlet who was called by her mother that her grandfather was not well and needed help on his ranch. Scarlet goes to the ranch and finds her grandfather with the onset of dementia and missing his wife who had passed away. Scarlett started to clear up the ranch by getting rid of everything that her grandparents had saved over the years so that she could make somethings of the ranch. Last Chance a Ranch was a rescue centre for animals of all kinds. Scarlett's best friend Adelle was there with her and when a cowboy came in looking for a job she hired him to get all the vehicles fixed and sold as they needed the money. The animals she was going to use to run the ranch by doing different things with each kind of animal. This book is a very compelling book on how rescue ranches are started and how much work and help us needed to run them. Lots of help and volunteers are required before she could be a registered rescue ranch. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill

This book was ok. I liked the whole premise of the Last Chance Ranch and what they offered. I enjoyed the ranch a lot as the author did a good job of helping me to picture it. Most of the secondary characters were likable but one stood out to me as rude and immature. In fact I haven’t decided if I’m going to read her book which is the next in the series. All though I did like the male protagonist who is going to be her love interest so I may move along to book two just to learn more about him.

What I didn’t enjoy about this book was that I have questions after turning the last page. For example, Hudson, the hero in this book, mentioned he had a service dog vest in his truck but it was never explained why he needed it. There was a lot time jumping as well. Also there were times I was a bit lost with the dialogue which I re-read over and still it didn’t clear things up.

This is a clean romance which I didn’t mind at all. Also, there is a lot of talk of God so if that isn’t your thing you might want to skip this one.

Great story and beginning of a new series

I loved this curvy, insecure h and how she let God help her. I found the H to be charming (in the best way) and refreshingly honest with himself and others.
This story can be read as a stand-alone or as the beginning of a new series. I'm grateful for that, as my KU has expired and I'm going to be buying books one at a time. :) I am also grateful for the KU access that Liz Isaacson has chosen to offer.
The synopsis and other reviews will tell you what this book is about. My reviews tend to tell you how it made me feel. I felt a lot of joy and gratitude while reading this. Although I'm underweight, I could completely relate to the h and her poor self image. Sometimes years of conditioning can be difficult to overcome. Reconciliation with estranged family can be challenging for those same reasons and the H's story shows that. Yet we know all things are possible with the Creator, through His son. The H&h definitely live that in this book.

It was just like reading the script of a Hallmark movie. It was cute and fun. In my opinion; the writing style was a little choppy, but other than that; I enjoyed this book. You read this with a grain of salt and read the "storyline....." not the "details" because they are missing. Scarlett runs this huge ranch and she is struggling for money, but she continues to hire people to work the ranch, and feed....??? The bill for all the dogs, llamas, goats, pigs, horses alone would be crazy costly, not to mention the animals would need regular vet maintenance which would be more in one month than I make in a year....these details were never addressed because personally, I don't think the author thought about it.
It was the wonderful story where everything fell into place. It was a perfect ending. The author created a scene where you wanted to be living that life. Animals, God, a good hard working cowboy, and an average weight woman in America; what more could you ask for?
GREAT LIGHT READ!!!! :)

Scarlett moved to Last Chance Ranch From LA, distance of only thirty miles, which can’t be right, a whole different world here. Grandfather and his love of hoarding things, was another world also. Forty three, a divorce behind her, and wondering what she was doing, it seems endless, all the cars, animals, and horses. Hudson, had been going from job to job, since his divorce, and hoping she would offer him one. Been a mechanic for twenty years, so could probably get cars running. Came with a cabin, and seeing that after living in camper and truck, thought he had gone to heaven.
As was looking at Scarlett, one divorce and he didn’t want to go down that road again. For Scarlett it was divorce and her size, and the pain, was too. much to try again. Yet, working together, to help get the ranch up and profitable again, love came. A delightful story, of happiness coming to two hard working people.
