What an amazing book - full of surprises and concepts that stretch the imagination. The ending was unexpected. The writing style was difficult to cope with at first but was soon irrelevant as the plot took hold.
Well worth a read.

Back to the Future of the Future

Set in the future, a group of kids and their pets are propelled farther along in time by mysterious whistles received from a stranger, which make sounds that reflect their names. Once there, they get drunk, meet their older selves, have dreams become reality, and battle an evil magician, zombie-like people, and a dragon.

Kirk sets down her tale in simple straight-forward prose which lends the narrative a fairy tale quality. Her writing also conveys an onomatopoeic reflection of events by alternating tenses – at times present tense, at others past – enhancing the reader’s sense of displacement in time. “The 3D map guided them to a forest full of trees where the calming lagoon is near.”

This short novella is a good read for young adults but can be enjoyed by grownups as well.

This is a perfect book that can be read to middlers in order to stimulate their active imaginations and allow them to create their own images of outer space, space travel, and worlds unknown. A Sci-Fi fiction with a vast array of characters doing magical things in magical worlds. Who knew whistles could be so dangerous and so much fun at the same time? Their future selves unfold right before their eyes as adventures await their young and old selves. Of course, teamwork saves the day.

A great read before bedtime for those whose imaginations run wild and who can conjure up vivid images without the limitations of illustrations.

Anita Kirk's story reminds me a fairy tale full of magical imagination. Her descriptive writing about Charlie and his friends took me a visual journey like that of Fantastic Beasts.  Each chapter built well upon the next, leaving subtle clues of what could, and might happen to our time travelers. How clever to use a bowling alley and bowling balls as catalysts to open the door to story ending way too soon!
