Al principio del Ventunesimo secolo il populismo sembra essere l'unica opzione politica capace di mietere successi. Ma cosa è davvero il populismo? Può essere considerato un'ideologia, con un contenuto ben preciso, oppure si tratta semplicemente di un insieme di efficaci dispositivi retorici? È un fenomeno nuovo o solo un termine diverso per definire l'antica demagogia? Deve essere inteso come un pericolo o può rappresentare una risorsa per il rinnovamento delle istituzioni democratiche? If you want to talk about populism, and particularly the Italian experience of it, Populismo by Damiano Palano is where to start.

What's populism and how did it evolve through the years? Here you'll have your answers, through the major theoretical schools on the subject as well as several empirical examples.

I loved the author's references to movies and media, an aspect that perfectly fits with modern populism, and I appreciated his apolitical view, that recognised different, various and not always totally negative forms of populism, as we instead tend to believe.

Reading this book rekindled my interest and passion towards the ongoing debate on the future of western politics, the role of populism, leaders and the always more widespread tendency to engage in politics outside of the institutions.
