'The boat appeared when I didn't expect or, frankly, need her. My bucket list was empty. Life was full…But sailing towards me was a boat that would stir the waters, waking decades of loss, revealing history untold, and restoring a legacy that was lost in the wind. For her and for me, I had to wade into that water. I had to go, to search, to find.'
Having fallen hopelessly in love with a 1930s Danish spidsgatter, a beautifully constructed 25 ft wooden double-ender, Kaci embarks on an international search to unravel the mystery of the boat's past, and discovers the many lives Pax touched since she first hit the water in 1936. Kaci Cronkhite's seven year search for Pax 's history is an elegant little gem, taking the reader aboard not only for sublime, wind-filled sails but also to eavesdrop the conversations and relationships that are built as she learns more about Pax's past, whilst hugely enjoying her present. Finding Pax is a story of discovery and reconnection like no other. The writing is poetic, spare, and full of 'In sailing, in weather, in life and death, answers are not endings and questions are not to be feared. The unknowns keep us moving forward.'
KACI CRONKHITE is a writer whose work radiates a passion for journeys--in the garden, a forest, or a sail around the world. In her work, you'll feel the wind, join the travel, discover history, and be part of the legacy. Her stories have appeared in the sea anthology Steady As She Goes, and in magazines and newspapers in America, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the Caribbean.
Finding PAX is her first book—but definitely not her last. After a wildly successful self-publishing launch in 2016, the book was acquired by Bloomsbury for worldwide release as revised and expanded edition for Fall 2018. The prequel is underway and due out, also with Bloomsbury, in Fall 2019.
She splits her time between a homeport with Pax in Port Townsend, Washington, a writing retreat near the historic family ranch in Oklahoma, and on writing sojourns with her partner, clients, and friends around the world.
While exploring the Port Townsend boatyard, I casually commented to the woman working on a very curvy little boat that her maintenance efforts were real work. Her response - “it’s a labor of love. That delightful little statement was just the tip of this wonderful story of love, discovery and dogged determination. Read it and smile!
I am not a boater. It was lovely to witness the journey to find the history of a boat. And, I will admit that Pax has been through a lot but kept going, seemingly knowing she was beautiful and only needed an owner who would take care of her. However, since I am very far from the boating world, the story just did not have the impact that I am certain boat lovers will devour.
A beautifully written book for those who love the sea , who either have boats or wish they could own one someday. Kaci's well researched story is an inspiring read in elegant prose. A rare jewel of a book.
