Glory’s pa needs a liver transplant. Luckily her ex is in deep with the mob and she knows about a cash drop she can heist - but things don’t go quite so peachy. I know, shocking right - who knew ripping off gangsters would land you into a whole world of hurt??

Rick Remender just isn’t a very good writer and his latest, Death or Glory, Volume 1: She’s Got You, is another sloppily-constructed story.

None of the characters were interesting. Glory is the archetypical Strong Female Protagonist, which isn’t compelling, and her quest is too virtuous - gotta save mah dying pee-paw! Oh, please. Generic, too-easy motivation. The hitman with the liquid nitrogen smacked of Cormac McCarthy’s Anton Chigurh, another psycho with an unusual method of execution, and he was pointless anyway. Speaking of pointless, Glory acquires a sidekick who doesn’t do anything besides slow her down for no reason.

I don’t buy her ex’s love for her - he’s this one-dimensional villain who’s there as a plot contrivance more than anything - and there’s a couple of Amish-looking girls included for no other reason than they looked different?

The lack of imagination and story conveniences pile up. When she needs a car, an unattended one - who also just happens to be owned by a dickhead - shows up. You know the bad guy’s a bad guy because he’s cutting people up to sell for food. And look, how agreeable to be ripping off someone who just happens to be trafficking in organs when you’re in the market for an organ! And then the corny ending with the truckers - bleurgh!

Bengal’s art is nice - I’m glad he’s sticking to the visual side of comics as he’s an even worse writer than Remender! - and there’s a lot of flashy car chases (though they’re surprisingly unexciting to read for all that).

But that’s all Death or Glory is: superficially slick-looking with a very shallow, one-note and overly simplistic story that never grabbed me. Another Rick Remender turkey!

Dang been awhile since I didn't love a Rick Remender book.

So this is about a Glory, who kind of just had enough of her life. Freedoms are being stripped from her and she decides to take control of her life. She can't save her father because she doesn't have the money and healthcare is a joke (Wow, this is pretty close to the truth now haha) And so she needs to rob and steal. So begins the mission but she isn't a trained robber and of course everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

Good: The art is pretty interesting, I like the design of a lot of the world and characters. Glory is a interesting enough character and her struggle with the system and it's fuck ups is good.

Bad: The characters, especially the side cast, is so uninteresting. I really tried to care but I just couldn't. I also thought the ending was full. A little too much talking about nothing in the middle. I just...I guess I couldn't connect with anyone but Glory.

Overall it wasn't horrible but I wanted to like it more and couldn't. Which is a shame, cause Rick Remender is top 5 writers for me right now. A 2 out of 5.

A solid Remender book with some great art. Its action packed with an eclectic cast of villainy which made for an enjoyable read! The ending definitely made me excited for volume 2 so this will be staying on my monthly pull list.

Glitzy artwork like bottomless margaritas, dizzying action moves the plot, and characters that are surprisingly more than paper dolls. Subsequent arcs might frost this adrenaline cake.

I thought that after Black Science and Seven to Eternity I'll be disappointed with this one based on the friends' reviews I was reading. But actually, this was a solid story I enjoyed really much. Twists in the plot were kind of predictable, but I still liked it. It's fast-moving with great artwork and I can not wait to read the second volume.

2022 Update: Definitely liked this more the second time around. Bumping up to four stars. The plot is insane, but Remender pulls it off, particularly when you have the even more insane second volume on hand. There's just a real sense of confidence in the storytelling - grab on and don't let go!

2019 Review: Death or Glory is Rick Remender near the peak of his crazy powers - it's intensely fast-paced and never uninteresting, but it's also so nutso-bonkers and over the top that your suspension of disbelief might become overwhelmed. At its core, it's the simple story of an impoverished girl, Glory, turning to crime to get enough money to buy her father a liver. Simple, right? Not so simple in Remender's hands - Glory was raised off the grid in a trucker convoy community and she just happens to steal from the local organ black marketeer.

Coincidence that her dad needs an organ and Glory unwittingly steals from the biggest organ thief in the Southwest? Uhhh yeah kinda. That's the kind of disbelief you gotta be able to suspend to hang on in Death or Glory. The organ dude is a nonchalant mass murderer who employs several unique henchpeople and Glory's ex not only works for him, but is also a super-rich criminal in his own right. And there are some Mexican lucha libre guys wandering through the story too?

Death or Glory moves fast, so you don't necessarily have to worry about any of this. But at some point it definitely becomes too much. The simple story gets washed away in Remender's waves of craziness. Fortunately, it's all illustrated by the superb Bengal, a French artist who I definitely need to spend more time reading. His artwork is simply stunning. Remender's craziness puts Bengal through his paces and, well, the reader kinda wins in that respect.

3.5*. Remender is one of my fave writers. The story here just doesn't seem to be at the same level as his other Image series. The story seems a little simple in narrative, the dying father and villains are a little cliched and he doesnt seem to touch on any political/social issues which is normally his strong suit. The artwork is awesome and detailed. Especially the car scenes. Not the best I've read from Remender but its still an enjoyable fast paced action thriller.

So, rarely do I not like comics. I like to believe I can find something good about every one I read but sometimes it is difficult to. This one wasn't bad. The art is pretty good, it has some great colors and some get action scenes. I really like Rick Remender, Im not afraid to pick up something new from him because I know it'll be good. And again, the book is good.
BUT there was something about it that didnt satisfy me. Im not sure if its because you dont get to see much of Glory's real personality before she starts the heist. Im not sure if its because the story is a bit over the top (yes even for a comic). Really fun read, but something felt like it was missing. Maybe it was heart. Which is funny because it tries so hard to. Maybe too hard? I also think that one volume coulda covered everything they wanted to do... cause I cant see what ridiculousness is gonna happen in the next. Really wanted to like this book more then I did, maybe the next arch will be stronger.

Having written for Image Comics since 2005, Rick Remender has produced so many titles and at this point, he has five comic books that are currently ongoing. In between these titles, Remender wrote the excellent sci-fi Tokyo Ghost, which finished after ten issues, so whether or not he has a long plan for his latest comic Death or Glory, does it stay on the road or go off the grid?

Tak Seven to Eternity zatim zustava jedinou Remenderovou veci, ktera me nadchla...

Hlavni hrdinka Glory zije v komunite truckeru, ktera funguje “off the grid”, a potrebuje sehnat prachy na tatovu operaci.

What was that? Brutal and gory (not glory). Shocking and mindless. The colours were nice but I did expect something totally different and have not the slightest interest to continue this shallow story.

Pretty damn solid book! Story is set up well and some pretty suspenseful action, while it may not be the most compelling story I've read it was a damn fun ride. Can't wait to see where it heads

Napriek tomu mi to neskutočne sadlo. A veľmi k tomu prispela aj skvelá Bengalova kresba. Miestami bizarné postavičky ma bavili a som zvedavý, ako bude dianie pokračovať.

Death or Glory is about a young woman called Glory Owen.

Glory was raised on the road, by her father who goes by the name Red, Red looked after Glory when her mother died.

Fast forward some years later, Red needs a lifesaving kidney surgery. This pushes Glory to do some interesting and life-threatening choices.

Along her adventure Glory faces off against corrupt cops, a Luchador Mexican cartel, serial killers and an ex-husband who is pretty insane.

Death or Glory is well-written, engaging and The art is beautiful. Bengel did an amazing job.

If you want high-octane vehicular action like the Fast and the Furious (when the movies were still good) fused with a bit of Kill Bill, then this series is definitely for you.

Well, that was a surprise and a lesson in not judging a book by its cover! I didn't think I was going to particularly like this. I thought it was going to be about cars and racing, and that the glory of the title referred to the glory of winning or something. I was wrong and I'm glad.

"We've all been stuck in something we couldn't get out of. Riddled with anxiety and dreams of packing it all up, unplugging from the game, and heading off into the unknown horizon. This is a story about someone who did."

I usually really enjoy Remenders work, but this just made me feel kinda nauseous. A lot of really unnecessary graphic grossness. Still trying to work out why the Deputy Sheriff allowed the Sheriff to shove a chilli pepper up his backside?! Anyway, not one for me, so I won't be picking up the next compendium.

Hmmm. I’m not really sure how I feel about this book. Nor can I think of what to say about it. It’s definitely a rick remender book so if you like his stuff then you will like this. 4 stars I guess.

I honest to god am never fucking ever reading another Rick Remender comic. How this man got a pretty cushy job writing comics if fucking beyond me. Good lord. Every time! Every goddamn time I forget how horrible I think his writing is and am like, "Aw, well, let's just give him another chance, shall we?" Never again. NEVER AGAIN.

Now, I just have to get this out of the way before I let the deluge of Remender hate out: I'm unsure how much of this is the fault of the artist because I don't think he's American, but I mean, you'd think an artist would at least put a LITTLE fucking effort into researching the place they're suppose to be portraying. Like, real research, not just watching Old Westerns where the same, like, 3 square miles of "The West" is shown. Seriously. Eh, I guess it kinda is the fault of the artist now that I think about it. What I mean is that "The West" isn't just Monument Valley, and, for the record, that classic depiction of Monument Valley is a really, really, really small area near the Utah/Arizona border. More than that, it's pretty hard to get to and there's also no real reason to go all the way out there unless you're going specifically to see that area of the place. After living in the desert for a while and driving around both Arizona and New Mexico, it's a really big pet peeve of mine that people think these places all entirely look like Monument Valley. And this comic is one of the worst offenders I've seen like...WHY THE FUCK DOES THE ENTIRETY OF ARIZONA LOOK LIKE MONUMENT VALLEY IN THIS FUCKING SHITCOMIC??????

Ugh.

That said.

Fuck Rick Remender. He's a fucking hack. And I question if he's even fucking stepped foot in Arizona. It's bizarre how he depicts it. First of all, people in Arizona don't have fucking Southern accents. They don't drop their "g's" and lose their "f's". Like, fucking seriously. Who the HELL said "o" instead of "of". This comic is a bag 'o shit. I don't even think people who do have actual southern accents say "o'". Oh my god it makes me so unbelievably mad. He just kinda threw in the Southern accent...because? Seriously, I have no idea why the fuck he did that. He's a fucking idiot and I cannot describe how much I hate it. I lived in Tucson, 'kay? It's like CLOSE to the fucking border. It's like VERY VERY Southwest. Like nearly as far South as you can get in Arizona. No Southern accents. Not a one. And this story doesn't even take place in Southern Arizona, it takes place in like the middle of Arizona, so like WHAT THE FUCK???

Remender is also one of those dudes who thinks that female empowerment is literally making a chick a dude. This is a huge problem nowadays and it's not only a crime of dudes. Plenty of chick writers/creators think that in order for a woman to be seen as strong, she needs to be a dude. Kicking. Punching. Cussing. Pissing. Truck driving. (Don't even get me started on that fucking ridiculous trope of making a woman a victim of some sexual crime to show how "strong" she is for over coming it. It's gross and fucking GROSS. Did I say it's gross? Because it is gross to insinuate the only problems women have center entirely around her sexuality or the victimization/abuse of it.) It's bullshit a chick can't be strong and wear dresses or be feminine and, in my opinion, is pretty regressive not progressive. It's probably the reason why I love characters like Sethe and Scully and Ripley and Hermione. Ripley is a great example in comparison to the main character of this comic. She IS a badass. She fucking rigs up a flame thrower gun thing. Why? To save a fucking kid. It's not gross or not feminist for her to want to protect a kid. She has this motherly instinct that, I think, some staunch feminists would dismiss as "harmful". Fuck 'em.

In the end, this was a fucking stupid comic and I hated it and I hated that he used Arizona for the setting while CLEARLY knowing absolutely nothing about the place. Fucking hated that his main character is a fucking stereotypical "sTrOnG bAd BiTcH".

Go away, Remender. (That said, yeah yeah, I generally liked the first two volumes of LOW then BAM! he hit me with the fucking Furries and I gave it up...also, that was pretty early in my comic reading "career" when I was nicer and lenient....gods, I was young then...)

Death or Glory answers the question, "what if the song Convoy by C.W. McCall was a comic?". Luckily I am a huge fan of that song and the golden time in American history where the open road and trucker life was romanticized. This comic plats with the idea that all you need to get by is a strong moral compass and a chosen family, the road will take care of the rest. I tend to agree.

The concept was pretty good but the execution of the story came off as week. Perhaps in future issues they will flesh out the back story even more and make it a good story. For now it just seems like another female lead comic that the market is already full of.
