Silas meets gorgeous, grumpy-looking Oscar at a bar. He’s never had sex with a guy, and what better place is there to find someone to pop that particular cherry? He knows what he’s getting with the broad-shouldered, I-can-pummel-you-with-one-look Oscar: getting bent over a hard surface and satisfied until he’s blaspheming. Turns out, though, there’s a lot more to Oscar that meets the eyes. Needs that you’d never guess just by looking at him. Needs that Silas turns out to perfectly meet. One night turns into two, turns into three, turns into a dozen. It’s just a little friends-with-benefits relationship with a dollop of kink on the side. No feelings involved, right? Right. Because Silas is just so good at keeping his heart in check.
This is an erotic ~27,000 word novella. Expect plentiful sex scenes with a friends-with-benefits (yeah, right), soft Dom/sub relationship.
When Marina was a child she couldn’t sleep. Night after dissolving night she just couldn’t sleep. Nothing much worked – until she started making up stories in her head. Suddenly, the transition into unconsciousness was a smooth dive into calm waters.
Marina is currently in a period of sleepless upheaval, and she hopes writing down the stories in her head will cast the same spell it did years ago.
If I were to rate this for erotic content only, I'd go with 4 stars. This story is 80 percent sex (D/s overtones, rough play, orgasm denial), and the sex is scorching hot.
The MCs are one dimensional, and the relationship happens in a vacuum. All the men do is hang out at Oscar's flat and screw each other's brains out. They never go anywhere or talk to anyone. There is a scene in a bar at the beginning when Oscar and Silas meet and another scene where Oscar's sister shows up unexpectedly, but that's it in terms of secondary characters or plot.
The story is told from Silas's POV, and Oscar is so taciturn, he's a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. The ending is a HFN/tentative HEA.
The big "I have feelings for you" reveal at the end was so awkward, it read like a conversation between two teenagers, not two grown men.
Rating for romance, this story gets 2 stars, for an average of 3.
edit 3/8/25: there’s a quiet, peaceful luxury that mv brings to her writing that’s just so nice, even in erotic novellas where the whole plot is fucking….like i’m in awe….upping from 4 stars to 5 bc i love🥰
original 4/8/24: ooooo baby i just fucking love marina’s writing….i love how intimate and caring the kink scenes were. i absolutely loved having silas’s perspective during them, ugh gorgeous. like you almost never get the pov of the one delivering the pain, so i really liked seeing how affected silas was. the consent aspect was really nice as well, i thought the way silas was always checking in on oscar, and his encouragement and reassurance when it came to safe wording was lovely. i ate up the little bit of angst at the end like goddamn candy lmaooo marina + angst = match made in heaven😍 one thing i will say tho, is while the intimacy built up around sex was so good, the intimacy outside of sex was lacking. well, just really any “get to know each other” conversations were lacking….like oscar is still a mystery to me fr😂 like oh ur in love? what’s his middle name🤨 yea gotcha there didn’t i??🤣🤣 lmaoo just goofin but honestly i don’t really mind shoving any complaints i have to the side in favor of marina’s writing bc i really just find it that enjoyable….like she could write the fucking dictionary and i’d be sat🤣🤣
DNF @ 50%, but I wasn't dissatisfied with the book. I just felt like I'd read exactly as much of the story as I wanted to, and it was time to move on. Chalk it up to being a weird me-thing, not a slam against the book.
This is my second time with this author, and I like her writing style -- there's something lively and fresh about it, and her quirky characters aren't stamped out of molds at the m/m romance cookie-cutter factory. I look forward to reading her again.
For a helpful review with some actual substance to it, let me recommend Annery's.
The more I read from Marina Vivancos, the more of a fan I am becoming.
Whilst this was mainly a smutty good time, there was so much intimacy and trust that developed throughout the course of what was supposed to be a casual fling.
It’s a novella but it still packed a punch and I would’ve loved it even more if it was longer. I fell for our main characters, the banter was amazing and the way fell deeper and deeper for each other and how those emotions came out during their intimate relationship? It was beautiful.
P.S. I really love that title!
“Silas could not remember ever feeling so sated, so perfectly in tune with himself and another person.”
Tropes: hookups to lovers, grumpy/sunshine Feels: 4/5 Steam*: 5/5 Kinks: very kinky, a variety of kinks, BDSM, orgasm denial, edging, toys Angst: low HEA: yes Pairing: MM Triggers/potential icks/content themes: subdrop, aftercare, safewording
Silas is 23, bi, and just got of a 5 year largely long distance relationship he had with a woman. They didn't realize until they were actually spending more time with each other post schooling that they weren't really compatible. Silas never really experimented because he was in a committed relationship. He's never been with a guy before. At a bar with friends he meets Oscar a grumpy friend of a friend. He's attracted to him and he propositions him.
They have a great hookup and keep hooking up. It starts as a Friday thing and ends up being many days a week thing. Silas is an honest and open guy, he doesn't edit himself, he is very eager to experiment and enjoy. Silas stumbles upon a kinkiness in Oscar that Oscar has suppressed, and he gives Oscar a nonjudgmental opportunity to explore that together, and it works out fantastically for both of them. And feelings develop on Silas's side. But he doesn't voice it because that wasn't something they agreed to, that wasn't what this was supposed to be and he doesn't want to lose it.
I really liked this. I'm not a person that loves a lot of kink. In the first 43%ish, before the real kink arrived, the guys just had an organic sexual enthusiasm for each other. And I have to say, I like that a lot more than the structured boundaries of a kink-driven relationship. It becomes more about the what we're doing rather than the feelings. But even with the kink which isn't my preference, this was a compelling story, with great characters, great emotion, well told. Especially because it's a novella! It's almost impossible for a novella to hit with me, and this was a good one. Though of course I would have preferred this as a full length book!
I really liked Silas. He was a chaotic uninhibited character and he was a lot of fun. Especially at the beginning he couldn't hold himself back from blabbering inappropriately and it was adorable. And it was also adorable how stoic the grumpy Oscar was in response, but Oscar was also against his better judgment so attracted to Silas! And Silas insisting on cuddle time, with Oscar not fighting him on it and gradually latching on to him quicker and more needily as time went on. ❤️
Some notable moments:
"“And I, I got on my knees, you know, ’cause the angle is better like that when you’re doing it yourself. And I pushed it in, and the stretch was, was…” Silas trailed off because Oscar had made some sort of noise. Silas opened his eyes to see Oscar staring down at him, pupils so wide Silas could fall right through them. They looked at each other for a while, Silas’s mouth open and wet as Oscar pumped his fingers inside him, fucking him slow and steady, building the pleasure deep."
"“I’ve been thinking about it a lot, you know. How it’d be like to finger you. I’d start slow, you know, I would, but I wondered how many fingers you could take. I’d press against your prostate until you were going crazy. I think I could make you go crazy, maybe, ’cause I wouldn’t let up, even if you were begging, and when I fucked into you, when I got inside you, it’d be so good, I just wanted to know the noises you would make, if you would—” Silas had only been half-aware that Oscar had been pushing him back until he suddenly hit the bed, landing on his ass. “Undress,” Oscar said, his voice dark, almost threatening."
"“Cuddle time,” Silas whispered, pressing against Oscar’s side, who was on his front to avoid irritating his sore ass. Oscar reached for him at once, pulling him in tight, almost clinging to him. For a strange second, Silas almost wanted to cry."
*FYI, I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
DNF at 55%. This book is 99% sex. I skimmed to 65% to check. Yep, still only sex. They don’t even talk much. I can’t take it anymore. It’s mildly kinky, nothing out of this world. They are kinda cute. I like the spanking although I’m not into orgasm denial. It’s really hot at times. But. Who wants to read 100+ pages of sex? Not me.
these two were pretty awkward here and there, but idk, it really worked for them. i love when the taller, more masculine guys are made out to be the dominant ones, just for them to be submissive later on. i find these dynamics to be little hidden gems since i don’t find them in many of the books i read. the ending did feel a bit rushed, but i still loved it overall.
This is 97% sex so far and according to other reviews that’s not going to change. While I’m occasionally okay with that, in this case the writing is doing absolutely nothing for me, the chemistry between the characters is falling completely flat. I think one of the MCs is supposed to be the quirky and that is meant to endear him to me, but I’m just bored.
I really like how this author does Contemporary but this was just plain erotica. It lacked feelings and romance although they were technically there. Nothing like the awesomeness of Rat Park.
„To witness what Oscar had opened himself up to. How much he had trusted him. Silas couldn’t imagine being that vulnerable, and yet he felt it now. He was as much at Oscar’s mercy as Oscar had been at his.“
This novella it’s a erotic kink story where Silas and Oscar enter exclusive a D/s relationship. Neither of them had done anything like this before but they made it work wonderfully.
Even if this book was almost just poor smut, but somehow you could feel their emotional connection , deepness of their feelings and their dynamic grow and evolve through it.
I loved that Silas just knew what Oscar needed from him and he gave him this more than willingly. He took such good care of him, gave him time when he needed it and let him discover and accept this part of him on his own term. Overall I just really adored that Silas was so gentle, patient and precious with him. He really worshiped Oscar with his whole being.
This was my first Marina Vivancos book and it won’t be my last :)
The sex The steam The intercourse Them doing the nasty The heat The coitus
What I didn't like... That it was 99% coitus. lt got exhausting! We went from fuck buddies to feeling in love on a blink of an eye without any kind of transition. The ending? I don't even know what that was. Too many loose ends also.
So it's 2 stars for the coitus only. Nothing for the the rest.
Mmm, so I finished this book a little while ago and forgot to write a review right away, and so now I'm trying to think of why I rated it 3 stars, but I honestly don't remember too much about the story anymore. I know there was a lot of sex involved, and I missed backgrounds from both mc's, which made it hard to see them as dimensional characters. I hardly learned where they came from and what kind of life they had lived before meeting each other. I guess it was an okay read, but not very memorable. Might teach me to write a review right after finishing a book, when everything is still fresh 😅
This is a new author for me, so I didn't know what to expect, but damn, this was good! A hot, short little thing that brightened up my day.
The story is about Silas, a young man who's not gay, but after breaking up with his long-term girlfriend, is open to shaking things up a bit.
This was my Silas.
When he goes on a night out, he meets Oscar, a grumpy, held back, serious guy, who's a tall wall of persian muscle, compared to Silas' thin frame.
This was my Oscar.
They have an amazing, hot night together, where Silas learns about the joys of penetrative sex, but things soon switch up a little bit when Silas takes on the dominant role, uncovering a submissive side in Oscar. Oscar, being brought up to be nothing but masculine and assertive, is fighting those sensations and his natural urge to submit, but Silas is right there next to him, giving him delicious encouragement and praise.
No, this is not a D/s dynamic, they are vers, but Oscar simply has no experience of being on the receiving end, because he's usually expected to top. Silas doesn't care about that and wants to try everything with Oscar, so he draws him out and Oscar consequently starts opening up, being vulnerable and blooming right before his eyes.
The book is spicy, steamy and at the same time beautiful, although there's so much more to be said about their relationship, it's bringing together two men from a completely different background and them finding love.
The story is told from Silas's POV and Oscar's character is not that much developed, but it doesn't damage your reading experience, I felt the story was interesting, it pulled me in and didn't feel like anything was missing.
Could this be a full length novel? Absolutely, it has big potential, I'm very interested in Oscar's story, his POV would be appreciated, their story is actually quite deep and hopefully we'll get the whole thing one day.
Writers that can generate more character in characters in a short book that is mainly sex scenes they’re the real MVPs! Will be checking out more by Vivancos! Silas and Oscar really came alive and were utter darlings while both discovering their kinks and how to make each other happiest!
NSFW infos: One out gay man (Iranian descent) One man who seems himself as a bi-virgin (one previous kiss) (White American) D/s dynamic Spanking Orgasm Denial Sobbing Aftercare cuddles
3.5 rounded to 4 Really good smut, ridiculous ending but it was cute for what it’s worth. I recommend this as a good quick palette cleanser between reads!
Oh no. I don't think this was for me at all :/ The kink saved it but barely.
WHAT I LIKED - Sexual exploration. The kink isn't hardcore but both characters are relatively new to it and I enjoyed watching them navigate the dynamics. - Short and sweet. This is a novella, so we're not dragging our feet here.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE - I didn't feel connected to the characters at all. I think that's largely due to the fact that things move extremely fast and while that's good in many respects, it didn't leave much time to learn about the characters beyond the bedroom. - The kink. It felt kind of rushed. A few throwaway lines on Silas's preferences would have been good - it's never implied he's into to kinky stuff until nearly halfway through the book and we don't really explore what that means for him. (Also, where's the learning curve? I assume he did some reading? All we know is that he read up on spanking, not everything else).
Although this wasn't quite for me, I'm still keen to read more of Vivancos's works so I'll definitely be coming back.
This erotic kink story is a little magical, in that they enter this D/s relationship when neither of them has experience and yet they make it work really well (not unheard-of), but it's so sweet. And then I hit that last line and that made this engaging & sweet story perfect for me. I'm not kinky, but I appreciate the dynamic.
To the people protesting that the characters were only ever together in one place--there is more than one way to get to know someone. They talked a lot, we get a few details. The important parts are core of attentiveness on Silas's part and a very difficult letting go on Oscar's. The misunderstanding's swiftly solved, my favorite. OMG the visitor. :D Really, if you need an intense but not terribly angsty story, try this one.
Definitely an erotic romance with a bunch of kink exploration.
Really enjoyed the chemistry and trust building between the MCs. I did have to suspend disbelief a little bit that our virgin-esque MC went from 0 to Dom with all the knowledge of kink, maybe if there was a little more backstory on him exploring that side/interest of himself it would have worked for me a bit more?
Orgasm denial, light choking, spanking, edging, rimming, mentions of toys. Very uptight and stoic sub, Dom with no filter, size difference.
Is this what guys mean all along when they say they want to get to know you better but they mean sex? Because after this book, not gonna lie.... I see the vision 💀
Howwwwwwww on earth could I feel their emotional connection growing through the sex? WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?!
Because this romance is told almost exclusively through their sexcapades but I swear to God I felt the intimacy grow and evolve as it would outside the bedroom. I didn't think this could be done and now I'm a believer.
"Silas realized then that this was what heartbreak felt like. It really was as bad as advertised."
💀💀💀💀💀Yes, my good man. You thought.....?
You know when one MC is absolutely DOWN BAD with emotions and they simply say anything and everything they feel with no thought of embarrassment or consequences? That. That's my favorite type of MC.
“I want to marry you,” XXX and his dumbass brain and dumbass mouth said as he pulled back. XXX froze, eyes wide. XXX hurried to correct himself. “Not now—I mean, maybe if you—but no. I just mean, like. Eventually. That’s what—that’s where I want this to go.”
I love this bumbling MC😂😂😂😂He ALWAYS says whatever's on his mind THEN worries about the consequences after.
“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
😩😩😩😩😩😩This really hit hard coming from this particular MC because he absolutely doesn't JUST say things.
I love when opposites attract and make perfect sense together. I loved everything about this. Ugh. 🥰
I was not prepared for this. There was so much raw emotion and I am not sure that I've ever read a book that gave me this many feels in such a short story.
Silas meets Oscar at a bar and they immediately fancy each other. Silas has never been with a man and has basically spent all of college in a long distance relationship, so doesn't have a ton of experience in the romance department.
When an epic night turns into a weekly affair, things start heating up and Silas asks for total trust. Even though this was supposed to be a casual thing, Oscar gives it to him. He gives him everything.
I was so entranced in this story. There were plenty of plot issues. There was basically no actual story, other than the fact that they were trying new things constantly and falling deeper and deeper, but I found that I couldn't put it down anyway. I have no idea how Oscar made his living, other than attending meetings and reading files, but those things didn't seem too important here.
This book was pure love and it was hot and definitely worth the read.
* A copy of this book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. Cross posted on Gay Book Reviews
I wholeheartedly disagree with the reviews that say that Silas and Oscar are undeveloped characters, that they have no depth, or that the story is one dimensional. It is subtle at times, it is shown almost fully through their sexual relationship, but there is a depth and growth here that is really beautiful to experience. And yes, probably 75% of this book is sex (read: smokin' hot chemistry and explosive passion), but it is a purely character driven - rather than plot driven - romance that develops so organically between the characters that I had no trouble believing it.
It's erotic, but it's humorous and it's sweet too. I adored the subtle D/s overtones, without being overbearing. I loved the way Silas just knew what Oscar needed, and was so willing to give it to him, and so open to letting Oscar accept in his own time that what he needed was okay. This was my first book by Marina Vivancos, and it certainly won't be my last.
I’d never heard of this author before Chara Croft recommended this book, but I thought I’d give it a try. Wow! I was blown away. There was lots of humor and some awkwardness but also heat and understanding and just some beautiful moments. I think I loved most the way Silas intuitively knew what Oscar needed and so openly met those needs, even though he’s not a conventionally brooding and serious Dom.
One *teeny tiny* complaint is the use of “clean” instead of “negative” when talking about test results. I’d hoped authors had gotten away from that wording for the most part. Regardless, I’ll be looking up more work from this author for sure!
