Not worth the time

I didn’t like this overall and am not planning to read the second book. The plot moved too slow and the ending cliffhanger which says the guys reasons for kidnapping her and his plans going forward are too far fetched to be believable at all even in a work of fiction.

I got the digital copy of this book for free on Google Play.

What's what in the book: Jolie is a young woman with a haunting past: as a kid she adored her father but the man turned out to be a serial killer in secret who had killed several women as he played the 'family man' to his wife and children, soon after the man was arrested, Jolie's mother committed suicide, leaving Jolie and her brother under their aunt's care. Now 10 years later, the young woman tried to step out of her father's shadow and get on with her life, but her hope was shattered when she was kidnapped by a mysterious man who called himself Hayden, who claimed Jolie's father had killed the love of his life.

So far, I like how Jolie's struggle with guilt and her trying to start a life as her own person despite her traumatizing past, I have no problem with the male lead in the book being an unrealistic drop-dead handsome, superrich kidnapper whose sexy body is being mooned over by the heroine. However, I'm not so sure whether I'm gonna like reading about said kidnapper having a hard-on when he got near/thought about the woman he'd kidnapped, and I'm not sure I'm gonna like the romance between them (though I'm not troubled by the concept of such a relationship and such situation), have to stay tune!

More to come.

🌟🌟🌟1/2

This review is for all three books in the trilogy. I couldn’t separate them in my mind once I read them.

Plot: Jolie is the grown daughter of a prolific serial killer/rapist. Her father was finally arrest for his crimes, but not after

For the last ten years, she’d tried to put that behind her. One day she’s kidnapped by a man who’s goal is to exact revenge on her and her father. His plan is so many things wrong with that plan. Not the least of which, Hayden isn’t a stone cold killer.

Hero: Hayden is emotionally messed up from guilt over his mother’s death. If he hadn’t lied to her and stayed out past his curfew, maybe he could have saved her. But mostly, he blames Jolie and her father. He takes Jolie to his deserted island and holds her prisoner.

Heroine: Jolie has it pretty good for a prisoner. She is smart in the way she uses her talents to get away. I was pretty impressed compared to other books with the kidnapping trope. I felt sorry for what she did as a child and it was irrational for Hayden to blame her.

description

Opinion: This was a good trilogy. It kept me interest from beginning to end. The writing was well thought out and descriptive instead of telling.

Safety/Experience level: They only used a condom once and it was only after they’d been together several other times. There was never a mention of STD’s or previous practices. He’d mentioned to the reader that he’d had other lover’s, but mostly he led a solitary life. She’d had no relationships, but several sexual acts.

There are triggers:

Push/Pull: Hero was mostly drawn to her.

Ending: HEA. Marriage is on the horizon.

Would I read again? Yes.

Yet another captive romance. It’s not bad at all. Nothing dark.
The H tries to act bad but fails. He is smitten by her but still wants his revenge.
The h is resistant of the H and I always appreciate that. She wasn’t lusting after him. She gives a tough fight to him. Just that..
The story continues in next book. I might read it.

Not believable

I love dark stories but the dialogue and the interactions between the 2 main characters were just too ridulous, no one talks to their kidnapper like that...it reminded me of a YA novel trying to be an adult novel, I won't buy book 2

so emotionally thrilling, so many twists and turns. a dark romance, i don't always read these kind of reads. i've never had an issue with cliffhangers ...i guess for me ... when you already belong to Kindle Unlimited and you know there are 3 books in the series to far ...you sort of know there could be a chance it will continue on ... ((what gets a bit maybe I will not read or buy another is when it is not in the Kindle Unlimited system and i have to buy it ... hope that makes sense. don't get me started on KU ...u pay every month for this service, it is NOT FREE, like so many folks say ... i always take that away, it is not FREE in any shape or form??!! ever ... unless u have some1 who pays the bill for you??!)) just like romance folks, or crime folks, or whatever genre you do write ... i appreciate the depth they do go ... such an amazing storyline ... could have swore i had read something from this author before??! but I am not seeing it ... nuts.. that really makes ya rack your brain-O! i know this authors, maybe she might be in the lump-sum that i have yet to get around to check her out!! glad i did now and i will totally read more ... she rocks!!! different kind of genre than i normally read but i enjoy jumping into different from time to time!! Dark and Sexy

Finding out her father was a serial killing was only the first of Jolie’s nightmare. Now, she’s taken captive to avenge the death of one of her father’s victims.

But when your captor is dark, dangerous, and handsome and displaces moments of concern for you, how do you fight back?

Seduction and compassion for each other only complicated their agenda and no one is to fall for the other. Can they?

Must move on to the next book in the series. Broken Minds.

Taking too long

Jeez! I stopped reading at 68% almost 3/4 done with book and little to no action between 2 main characters. I’m all for setting up the story but there was way too much setting up going on. Ugh! Lots of possibilities for this book, it just dragged on too long.

Compulsive and heart-rending dark romance
I loved the premise of this series. I’m a huge fan of dark romances as I adore the conflict and tension between the protagonists and the journey they embark on as an individual and subsequently as part of a couple. This book certainly has conflict and tension in spades as Hayden, the hero (or rather the anti-hero) abducts Jolie, the heroine in a twisted tale of revenge.
I found the abduction scene and what happened to Jolie chilling and very well done. The reader is kept on their toes with the events that ensue. Hayden is a dark and damaged man. He has no misgivings about using Jolie to encourage her serial killer father to break out of prison so that he can enact his revenge upon him for the murder of his mother. Indeed, he holds Jolie partly responsible and despises her with a passion. For Jolie’s part, although she is revolted by what her father has done, she is naturally terrified as to what will happen to her at the hands of this desperate individual who is using her as a pawn to lure her father.
Jolie is certainly in a desperate position – escape from Hayden, who has spent a decade planning his plan for revenge, seems impossible. There are plenty of page-turning and harrowing scenes and I also enjoyed how Hayden and Jolie reflect upon their respective roles as captor and captive and also finding out how the actions of Jolie’s father, a serial killer, cruelly impacted on their lives…
In this instalment I loved how little by little Hayden comes to see her Jolie as a person whom he starts to develop feelings for. As for Jolie her position is desperate and she needs to use every advantage she can to escape...

Both books end on a cliff hanger and I was impatient to find out what happened next! A great read for fans of dark romance who love damaged heroes and heroines.

Jolie’s father was a very publicized, prolific serial killer, and for ten years Hayden has patiently plotted revenge, waiting for her to grow up (that age thing sounds creepy but it isn’t). He abducts her and takes her back to his private island, but he didn’t anticipate how much he wants her. Jolie doesn’t make it easy for him, and there are some really good exchanges between the two of them, especially early on.

Of course, there are secrets, and unanticipated complications—like how smart and crafty Jolie is. She’s a great character and is really the star of this first book.

I love the direction her mind goes after she’s taken, Based on her thoughts and conversations with Hayden, it’s clear that she’s read a few dark romances—and learned from those stories. She makes mistakes but avoids the typical stupid things dark romance heroines often do/fall for. She eats and exercises to keep her strength up so she can resist.

She’s smart about her captivity—not a Mary Sue’s lack of reality but in a reasonable, believable way. She really thinks through her situation and ways to get into a better position or escape. But Hayden has had ten years to set this up. In the next book, there are repercussions for the big finale and he’s going to “step things up a level.” This book lets Jolie shine, but I have a feeling that the next one belongs to Hayden.

BRUTALLY TWISTED!👍👍👍👍👍
One heck of a fierce dark read that grabs you right from the start knocking you flat on your ass keeping you there till it has shoved every grueling, dark, broken, heart-wrenching insanely twisted word into your soul shocking you leaving you frazzled and unable to focus beyond the words in front of you as they roll around in your mind trying to penetrate the bits of common sense you have that keeps telling you to get out stop reading but your adrenaline kicks in infusing your fingers into overdrive needing and wanting more of the abuse this mind blowing read demands from you! An absolute must read that takes all the control over your senses leaving you speechless and frustrated pleading for the torture to continue because you demand that the abuse you've been put through is not as worthy as what your willing to endure for this brilliantly written read to continue feeding you the rest of this story instead of leaving you empty and starving for more! Extremely dark, fierce, raw, broken, a myriad of emotions, a non-stop bundle of gripping twists you never see coming and definitely wished they never had! Spine tingling chemistry and impossible to put down! A freaking awesome must read!

A totally captivating, twisted dark romance.

First things first, this book does end on a cliffhanger. It will leave you wanting more and wondering what is going to happen next. I am thoroughly enjoying this series so far. It is dark and twisted, just the way I like my dark romances.

Jolie gets asked what it's like to be the daughter of a serial killer. She hates the question but a part of her understands the curiosity people have about her answer. If she answered truthfully she would tell them she felt guilty and ashamed, but who would that help. She wants to be able to help children who need someone to talk to and she can't expect them to talk to her if she can't talk about her own life experiences.

Hayden has been planning to exact his revenge on Jolie and her father for the last ten years. He blames Jolie for her part in his mother's death and wants her and her father to pay. So he kidnaps her and puts his revenge plans into effect.

Grab this wonderfully written suspenseful dark romance to find out what he plans to do with Jolie now that he has her. Definitely a good story and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Shattered hearts is heart-stoppingly good!!!
by Brandy Jones

Oh HOLY MOLY!!! I cannot even begin to put in words how amazing this book is but I'm going to try.
Jolie finds herself in a terrifyingly, dangerous situation after being kidnapped and will do anything she can to get free from the handsome madman. She is a strong woman who obviously doesn't give up easily and I like that in her character.
Hayden has had only one thing on his mind for years and that's revenge. Jolie is somewhat going to be a means to an end of his continued suffering. Just a pawn. He begins to find it harder than he thought it would be to resist the woman he has tried to harden his heart towards. I can't help but already have a soft spot for Hayden.
Wow this book is mind blowing and it's just getting started, which leaves me so so excited to find out what happens in the next book. It has danger, sex appeal, and tension and I couldn't put the book down.

This was an absolutely fantastic read. I loved Jolie. How she was. At first I didn't like Hayden. And what a cliffhanger. Absolutely can't wait for book 2. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. 5*.

This book is about a girl (Jolie) who is the daughter of a serial killer. She gets kidnapped by a man (Hayden) who lost someone close to him when she was murdered by this killer. Hayden wants to get revenge on the imprisoned killer and the daughter, believing the daughter is somehow complicit in helping her father get away with murder. Hayden is attracted to Jolie, though he does not want to be, and struggles with his feelings for Jolie as she attempts to escape. A warning to readers: This book does end on a cliffhanger so they have to be prepared to read the next book if they want to see if Jolie and Hayden can reach an HEA.

If you like dark romance, this is the book for you. I really enjoyed shattered hearts and have flown on to the next book. ( I got the box set )

Jolie is the daughter of a serial killer. Struggles with her life and moving on from the horrors of her messed up family childhood.

She is taken against her will and watch the events unfold. We see mainly things from her perspective but we do see Haydens perspective as Well. I actually love both characters even tho Hayden is the phsyco kidnapper with issues.

Great book, written really well and we wouldn't expect anything less from Marrissa Farrer. I love her books she is one of my top favourite authors and I can't recommend her books enough. She provides you with a good solid, well written, full bodied read.

5 stars from me.

The only reason this gets 3 stars is because the heroine wasn’t too stupid to live, actually tried to escape and didn’t fall in love at first sight with her captor...though I’m sure that last part will change in the next book. Kinda spoily ahead...

What I couldn’t wrap my head around was why Hayden planned this revenge for 10 years based on the fact a 12 year old girl agreed with her mother in front of police. So a child says something while intimidated and scared because she’s following her mother’s lead and thinks it’s the right thing to do and you spend the next 10 years of your life preparing to exact revenge? I don’t buy it. I don’t care how tragic the circumstances, that part...the whole premise of the book...didn’t make any sense whatsoever

Jolie has suffered from being the daughter of a convicted serial killer, unaware that someone is plotting to use her to avenge the death of his mother, a death he blames Jolie for. Hayden will stop at nothing, using the vast fortune he has built since his mother's death for the sole purpose of revenge. A great start to the new series, and with an ending like that it's good to know that the next book in the series will follow very soon! Yet another hit from Marissa Farrar, I've yet to read one of her books and not enjoy it.

This is a review of all books in the trilogy and to be fair I would probably rate them 3.5 stars. The writing was good and the captivating push pull romance between our two H's throughout kept things moving. My biggest criticism, I think the story could have probably been done in 2 books. Having said that, the story did pick up pace in the second and third books in the trilogy.
Well worth reading, although not as dark as many I have read despite kidnap, murder and attempted rape being included along the line.

3.5 stars, rounded down
Quick, fast-paced read. Love the idea of the book, not 100% sold on the execution. The cliffhanger was a bit… I’m not sure. It wasn’t something that was very believable. That put me off a bit.
Enjoyable read all the same, read it in one sitting, about 2 hours.
I’m also just not quite sold on the main characters. I don’t resonate with them as much as I would have liked to. It was just lacking a bit of something to bump my rating to 4 stars, just can’t quite put my finger on what exactly.

This is part one of the two book series, without book two being yet released. Had I noticed that I wouldn’t have read book one before book two being released as I hate cliffhangers and ...to be continued.

Overall it was an interesting book that I enjoyed quite a lot. Likeable characters with good storyline, but I would not considered the story particularly dark. Certainly the hero did not give that impression.

Hope the next book in the series is equally good if not better.

Jason Momoa!

That's the only person I could imagine playing the part of Hayden. This reads like a movie and I love that!!
I'm thinking Chloe Grace Moretz would play a really good Jolie. Am I right? Yeah I am!
And for the part of Loretta... Wait for it... Michelle Gomez (Dr. Who & Sabrina)
Ok so now that you have those actors in mind, read the book and let's see if you agree with my selection.
Go on. I'll wait.

Kidnapping and revenge

Well written with good characters and dialogue. Definitely entertaining and worth a look. The tension is gripping and highly charged. I really enjoyed this one. The difficulty is, reviewing the storyline without giving away the plot. It's simple and easy to follow but so captivating.
Serial killers, kidnapping, revenge and all that goes with it.
Highly recommend this one.

Wow!

I absolutely loved this book! This book is a page turner, I could not put it down and I can't wait to dive into the next book. The author doles out the mysteries of this book a little at a time, and you never know what is going to happen next. Both the H and h are painfully broken by the actions of one man, how they handle.their brokenness is defining of their characters. This is one heck of a ride down the rabbit hole!

Ok firstly anyone expecting this to be a run of the mill romance...it definitely isn’t. Jolie is the daughter of a serial killer, Hayden is the son of one of his victims. Both feel they are in part responsible for her fathers crime with Jolie blaming herself for a lie she told as a child. This book has many layers but at its heart asks how far we’d go for the ones we love and is it ever right to lie?
Looking forward to the sequel
