The summer before my senior year of high school I had only one goal: to make Alden Warner see me as more than his best friend’s annoying little sister.
Finally, my wish came true and he noticed me. In a big way. Too bad that the next morning he had no memory of our night together, leaving me heartbroken, and as I later discovered…pregnant.
For the last four years, I’ve been rocking the single mom thing, making sure my daughter comes first. In fact, everything is going fine—until Alden storms back into my life, as my new boss.
His reappearance wasn’t something I planned for. Add my nosy, meddlesome three-year-old and an overprotective brother, and I’m obviously in way over my head.
My only hope now is that I can sway Alden to see things my way…but you know what they say about the best laid plans…
This heroine was too pathetic. She dated but none of her dates were the hero, She tried to have 1 ons and she couldn’t go through with it. She chickened out, she never slept with anyone but the hero. The woman spent the whole book stuttering and apologizing “I-I-I” “I-I-I s-sorry” She apologized until she was green and even after that she still apologized and when he acted like a dick he wanted to apologize she would cut him off and said that it was all her fault and that she was sorry because it was her fault that he was a dick.
He took her virginity and forgot about it because he was drunk as a skunk. A month after it he started dating a woman, he became engaged to her. His fiancé lied and cheated on him, she tried to pass her baby as his, that’s why with the heroine he thought she too was a lying conniving bitch (his words, not mine) of course let’s cause more drama for the sake of it. It was so unnecessary to turn the OW into a conniving bitch. I mean the heroine had to look good so why not right? The OW or OM has to always be a bitch and a dick in books. I’m so tired of this.
He had fantasies about a night that he didn’t even remember, he took care of “business/masturbate” for years and I’m assuming he did this even when he was with his fiancé. Making him in my eyes also a cheater.. emotional cheating still counts in my eyes. #sorrynotsorry. The way he trash talks his fiancé is disgusting. He called her a bitch, the heroine’s brother called a c*%t.
The pathetic was even very much happy that after he ended his engagement with OW had only slept with her/heroine. And when their daughter fell and broke her arm and hero was In the hospital yelling at one of the nurses the stupid got hot and bothered watching him being a “dad” while her daughter was crying and hurt this woman was thinking how hot Hero was making her. I didn’t think she would get more pathetic than before but she did.
So if you’re looking for a pathetic and her dick of a hero then look no further you found her right here in this book.
Best Laid Plans is my first LK Farlow book and it won’t be my last. I know, you see the rating and you’re probably thinking… what? But let me explain. I really enjoyed this authors humor and writing style. The book was not for me, but I think I might have enjoyed it lots had it not had my #1 most hated thing in books… the secret baby. Ugh.
I heard this was a brother’s best friend book and I was so here for it. Then I started listening to the audio book and quickly realized there was a secret baby and I thought maybe I could get past it or there would be something that would make me understand more and maybe I would have, but it bothered me even more the way the hero reacted to her. I just didn’t jive with this book or these characters at all. Except for the little girl. She was a doll.
If the secret baby thing isn’t a deal breaker for you, give this one a go. I can see why so many people love it. It just wasn’t for me.
I'm not a huge fan of books that involve a hidden pregnancy but I am a big fan of the brothers-best-friend trope so I couldn't pass this book up. And I'm glad I didn't since I ended up really enjoying it. I have never been in the same situation as Natalie yet I found her character very easy to connect to and at times could relate to the emotions that she showed.
Alden was also a really great character to read about and I could understand everything he was going through. That anger mixed with desire that had him struggling on how to feel was interesting to read about and it added a lot of intrigue into the story. At least for me. Both Alden and Natalie had a lot going on in the book but it never felt like one character took over the story and instead I got to enjoy both of them equally.
Overall, I definitely recommend reading this book. Even if you're like me and not a fan of hidden pregnancies, I think this story is worth a try.
ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.
the main thing i took away from this book is the fact the hero wore red chinos on their first date. red chinos
that’s the lasting impression the hero had on me. while the heroine, Natalie, i liked a lot more. she was an amazing mother and was so devoted to her daughter, Tatum, that it made this soooo much more enjoyable to read. and Tatum was so stinking cute🥰
...and maybe im in the wrong, but i seriously wasn’t as mad as all the other characters bcos Natalie kept her daughter a secret from Alden? i mean, she’s been in love with him for years, he takes her virginity and then proceeds to not remember a thing, devastating her. then when she finds out she’s pregnant, she finds out Alden’s dating someone else (who he later moves to Europe with and proposes to her) so decides not to tell anyone out of humiliation for herself and then to protect Alden. she was 17 while he was 21... which is statutory rape if anyone found out. she was scared for him, as well as herself.
so, while her actions may not have been right, i really understood them and symptomised a lot with her. his reaction was pretty severe and i felt so bad for her. especially when her whole family kept reiterating how disappointed in her they were. she was a kid who made a mistake, with Alden living in Europe with his fiancé, Natalie couldn’t imagine him wanting anything to do with her🤷🏻♀️
again, maybe her actions weren’t right but i understood where she was coming from. it also probably helped me like Natalie more bcos Alden was an arse a lot of the time— he was rightfully blindsided, angry and hurt... but refused to see where Natalie was coming from. and the guy really took no responsibility for his own actions. like having sex with an underage girl while you’re so drunk, you have no recollection of the encounter... yeah, just stuff like that.
so my sympathy for him was minimal, especially when he said shit like “Get back to work. And Natalie, why don’t you button your shirt up a little more” in front for the whole kitchen staff of their workplace🥴 you best believe i would be PISSED.
and i didn’t understand... if Alden has had feelings for Natalie since she was sixteen... why tf did he get engaged to another woman, huh? he kept spouting on about how he’s always had feelings for her and now he’s was back in town, he wanted to act on them. so what about those years you were with another woman?? i– make it make sense bro.
i also have a physical aversion to romances where the MCs are parents and their kid is injured or sick... and the MCs have sex while their kid has spent the day suffering? like i wouldn’t take my eyes off my kid lol. sex would be the last thing on my mind. i know that’s a really specific qualm but this is the third book i have read where that happens and it never sits right with me ://// like their poor three year old broke her arm and had a traumatising af day... and your response when you finally get her home is for the hero to make you “feel good”??? weird, but okay, i guess.
id be at my kid’s bedside for as long as possible, but you do you.
so all in all, this was a quick cute read with two of my fave tropes.
side note:and all the cool hairstyles the heroine could do on her daughters hair (like wtf even is a waterfall braid? it sounds cool af) made me low-key have a crisis for when i have my own kids bcos i am 21 and i cannot even braid my own hair never mind somebody else’s😒 the most complex i can manage it a ponytail🤪
3.5 stelle Ho trovato la scrittura troppo semplicistica, a momenti sembrava una cronistoria senza emozioni, difficile entrare nella storia, tranne i momenti in cui era presente la piccola Tatum, la vera protagonista ❤️...
This is my first book by this author. The blurb is really promising. Falling in love with ur best friend sister. Always a go to for me. The story is simple enough and expected. The characters are likeable even though i wish nathalie have more backbone. Alden is the sweet Hero. Well he does reacts like an ass when he found out he has a daughter. But i can understand where he is coming from.
What i also loke there is some cooking tips lace together into the story. Which makes it more interesting for me. I always a softie gor a Hero who can cook.
Tatum is a sweetheart even though i wish she is more brat than this perfect child
This is a reread, I originally rated as a 2.5⭐roundup four years ago, but I couldn’t even finish it this time around. I’ll leave my original rating, but FYI.
17-yr old Nat has LOVED her bro’s BFF (Alden) FOREVER. She decides to make her move when he gets wasted at a party. The premise for the entire book is that they hookup, but Alden is so drunk that he doesn’t remember having sex at all (I found it a leap that he was this inebriated but could still perform), and she ends up pregnant. Then we jump four years later with Alden moving back, and Natalie eventually getting around to telling him he’s a father.
My biggest issue was failing to connect to the story and becoming invested. The foundation was unbelievable, and their reactions felt unrelatable. It was all very OTT from his alcohol amnesia to her overdramatic apologies to his unexplained anger… not to mention the daughter talking like a 3-yr old but acting like an 8-yr old.
Bottom Line- The NA vibes were pumping, and I’ve grown out of the genre. I threw in the towel at 60% and not much had happened with zero feels.
It was OK, but I gave it an additional star because I did like it. Everything is pretty predictable and the plot goes as expected. There were a few scenes I could have done without but overall OK book.
Accidental teen pregnancy that is kept secret from the heroine's teen crush and brother's best-friend. When the hero returns to town it's not long before the secret is revealed.
Heroine spent far too long apologising.
The kid was cute but found myself entirely underwhelmed.
Y’all already know, I love me some Kate Farlow. I’ve been a fan since I discovered Coming Up Roses... and I knew then that she would be going places. I’m so excited that I can be on sidelines to watch her grow and succeed while cheering her on.
Best Laid Plans was another winner for me. It’s not a home run but it’s definitely a triple. You get a little bit of everything with this book. You like the brother’s best friend trope? It’s got it! Like single parents? Done! Secret baby? Boom, baby! Office romance? Yes, sir! See? What did I tell you? It’s got it all!
You’re probably thinking “Allyson, if it’s so great, why isn’t it a home run?!” Well, we all like something different... FOR ME, I saw the story going a certain way and there was just something that I believed was a key aspect of the story that I would’ve liked to see more of throughout the book. Even though that didn’t pan out for me, it didn’t take away from the writing and overall storytelling.
I thought Best Laid Plans was a really good read. It kept me interested throughout. I didn’t want to put it down for a second! Kate just has a way with storytelling and knows how to keep readers interested and on the edge of their seat to find out what’s happening next. This is definitely a book that I will read again and I cannot wait for more from her! (I also can’t wait to grab that paperback... that cover deserves ALL the hearts eyes!! 😍😍😍😍)
I struggled a bit with what rating to give this book. It had real potential to be a cracking 5 star read. It’s a good story with some really funny parts, a hero who I could have cheerfully slapped but then he redeemed himself and a heroine who I really was rooting for. The pace was good and there was lots of dialogue which was interesting and well done.
So, why 3 stars? Two main reasons for my rating : 1) There are lots of typos and this book could really do with a re- edit. I am fairly forgiving of typos but this book has some major ones. It became distracting. 2) At times the descriptive writing felt a bit stilted. There were step by step details on the dishes being cooked. Daily tasks were described in maybe a bit too much detail.
However, to come back to the positives, of which there were many, this is a very enjoyable read. I really felt for Natalie. She falls pregnant at 17 after her first time of having sex. The guy is Alden , her big brother’s best friend and she has adored him for years. Unfortunately , he has no recollection of their night of passion as he was so drunk. Four years later Alden returns and discovers he has a daughter... and unresolved mutual attraction to Natalie.
HEA? Yes - really lovely epilogue Cheating? No Angst? Mild OW/OM drama? Off the page Would I read more of this author’s work? Yes - I would be keen to try another book by her.
This one was recommended to me in a FB group so I thought I’d give it a try. While I found the writing to be pretty solid, the entire storyline was a little icky and unsettling. I totally dig secret babies stories, but in this one, this underage girl has sex with a 20 year old guy (brother’s best friend) but then the guy doesn’t remember they had sex. Ugh, no, that’s ridiculous. She gets pregnant but decides to keep the baby daddy identity secret because she’s a minor and he’ll get in trouble. He’s also away at college. Fast forward 4 years later and he’s back in town. I hated his attitude when she told hi, he treated her terribly and the poor girl spends most of the book apologizing to him for not telling him about the baby. However, he never apologizes for clearly taking advantage of a minor and impresionable girl. Somehow she’s the one to blame. I just can’t deal with that. The audiobook narrators are not great either, especially the woman, she’s plain awful.
One word...AMAZING! This book turned out to be way better than I expected! Yes there were a few errors in words but hey no one is perfect. I'm not really one for books where kids are involved because let's be real, I read to get a break from my kids. However Tatum stole my heart. She has to be the cutest little 3 year old ever! She made this book what it was. Alden was amazing in himself and stepped up big time. The world needs more men like him in it or at least I need to look harder. Haha. All in all this book is a must read!
DNF at 30%. Tried really hard to keep going. Just plain ol mediocre and starting level basic. I wake up, I walk to the bathroom, I grab the door handle, I shove open the door, I take a step in...
Prolly something a 12 year old might enjoy. Also, strange that the h has a baby in high school who has her dad's hair and eyes and not any one in the h's family can connect that to H (who's supposedly h's brother's best friend...)
And how do you really get away at this age by telling your parents you don't know who the baby daddy is..esp that you weren't really a slut to begin with. And I can go on.. But it's wasting my breath.
3,5 ⭐️ La storia è stata trattata in modo un po’ surreale, superficiale e troppo rapido, con un po’ di spessore in più poteva essere un bel libro. Va però bene per staccare da una lettura più seria ad un’altra.
The story was pretty good right up until Natalie told Alden he was the father of her daughter Tatum. Alden was so angry because he believed that Natalie was a liar like his ex Mia. It seemed like he was kind of an idiot if he was with Mia for four years. He said she was a liar and trying to get money from him. Mia had said she was pregnant with his baby and would ask him for money to go to the doctor, but come home with a new designer bag. Really? Is he stupid? And how long did this go on? If Mia was cheating on Alden with the baby daddy was the other guy ok with being the 'other guy' when he was the baby's father? Or were they both trying to scam Alden? Did she have the baby while she was with Alden? Did the happen at the beginning of their relationship? There really was no real details given, just that Alden kept going on and on and on about what a deceitful person Mia was, but no real evidence of story to back out up. I hate when authors do that because I feel like Alden's anger can't be justified. And he kept getting angry at Natalie because he kept thinking she was like Mia, in fact he kept calling her Mia 2.0. This whole storyline was so confusing!!!
Alden was kind of an a**hole, and Natalie kept taking it which kinda made her a doormat. I didn't really care for either of these characters. I also really could not stand Natalie'a dad. The only redeeming character was the little girl Tatum. She was cute.
For years, Natalie had a crush on her brother’s best friend, Alden, so when he shows interest in her one night, she doesn’t hesitate to be intimate with him. Unfortunately, he was intoxicated and doesn’t even remember it happened and breaks her heart. But she’s truly devastated when he becomes seriously involved with someone soon afterward just as she realizes that she is pregnant. She has the baby on her own and doesn’t tell Alden or talk to him for four years. He returns home and buys the restaurant where she works, and she vacillates between angry and hopeful. When he wants more than friendship with her, she’s elated but knows that she has to tell him the truth, and she’s terrified she’ll lose her shot at the one man she’s always loved.
Best Laid Plans is sweet and sexy, and it has a great balance of lighthearted romance and emotional angst. Natalie and Alden’s story really tugged at my heartstrings. You could feel the depth of their feelings for each other as they embark on a new, stomach-tingling romantic relationship while struggling with the pain and betrayal of their night of youthful passion and also learning to co-parent their daughter, Tatum, together. LK Farlow delivers a moving story of second chances that left me with a huge smile on my face.
ARC provided, but this review was voluntarily and honestly written.
L.K. Farlow is a relatively new author to me and why that is , I have no idea. From the first to the last chapter she had me enthralled with the story she wove. The writing was strong and I found myself totally invested in Alden and Natalie’s story. I enjoyed the narration by Lauren Sweet but I felt that the male narrator Rock Engle did not do justice to the part of Alden, but then that is just my opinion.
There were times that I laughed and cried reading Best Laid Plans as the emotions were all over the place. However this story is totally heart warming and made me smile. Both Alden and Natalie had a fling and no one was more surprised than Natalie when she wound up a pregnant teenager. The chemistry between Alden and Natalie is electrifying but will Alden be able to forgive the secrets and move forward with Natalie?
It wasn’t horrible but nothing to really write home about either. It seemed to lack depth. And again, why 1st person present tense? Also the little girl talked cutesy baby talk but her sentence structure and word choices were too old for her age.
I expected more from this book... but as this is new to me author I will read more of her books.. I don't know what went wrong but in the end, I was annoyed.. 2,5 stars
⭐️ 4.5 "Tater Tot" Stars ⭐️ Best Laid Plans was my very first read by L.K. Farlow and I’m very impress! The gorgeous cover initially grabbed my attention, but then I read the blurb and I was already sold on this story. Brother’s best friend, secret baby and second chance romances are tropes that I enjoyed particularly and together it shaped an adorable novel that gave me butterflies in the stomach.
Natalie Reynolds became pregnant from her big brother’s best friend, Alden Warner, when she was seventeen. She never revealed the identity of her little girl’s father, but now that Alden is back in her life as her new boss, it’s time for the truth to be exposed. I really enjoyed the pace of the story that was appropriate for the situation. Nat and Walden don’t dive into a relationship straight away, in spite of their incontestable attraction for each other. They first learn to forgive and let go of their past mistakes and anger. They’re such a beautiful couple that share an evident chemistry. The anticipation for them to enter a romantic relationship was great and the slow burn perfectly presented!
Walden’s relationship with his little girl Tatum was exquisite. They forge a bond right away, even if they don’t know their true link at first. The daddy / daughter duo made me swoon so hard. Tatum is so precious! Seriously, that cutie made me smile and laugh with her cute babbling and sweetness! She’s so candid in her joyful personality!
Best Laid Plans was a wonderful endearing story that left me with my heart so full of happy feelings! L.K. Farlow is an author I look forward to read more of her work!
** ARC received in exchange for an honest review **
Sometimes I felt sorry for Alden and the shock he must have experienced, as well as the sense of anger and betrayal. Often I felt sorry for Natalie, doing what she thought was best but also hurting people in the process. There were moments when I felt bad for both of them and their extremely difficult situation. But then there were the times that I wanted to smack someone. I wanted to shout at their assumptions, prejudgement and accusation. So again, this book had me on an emotional roller-coaster. But it wasn't one I wanted to get off of until all the words had been read. It absolutely held my attention and had me invested in the lives of these characters.
LK Farlow is steadily becoming an author I don't hesitate to grab her new book when I see it available. I look forward to reading more from her in future.
BEST LAID PLANS by LK Farlow this is the story of Alden and Natalie. Natalie always had a crush on her brother friend. Natalie did have a hot encounter with Alden that left her with a baby but their shared encounter was something Alden didn't remember. Now years later Alden is back and their connection is still there along with the fast development connection with their child. I overall really enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from this author.
