The Makanza #0.5

The Second Wave

Rate this book

He thought the danger was past, but it was only the beginning...

Two years ago, the Makanza virus was eradicated from the public. Now, everyone thinks they’re safe—including Davin. As the oldest among his siblings, Davin plans to leave for college after a short visit with his divorced father on the Cheyenne River Reservation.

But then the Makanza sirens go off, and everything changes.

The warning alarm splits the soft April skies over the vast, South Dakota prairie. Against all odds, the virus has returned, and the outbreak is only a few miles from his father’s ramshackle home.

Davin can only watch, helpless, as his family succumbs to the virus, and when coughs rattle his chest, he fears death is inevitable.

But a different fate awaits Davin. As his body fights the virus, it isn’t dying. It’s becoming something different. Something that will leave him with strange new powers… and make him a hunted man.

Gripping

Gripping, I couldn't put it down. So full of family and loyalty when all hell was breaking out, I just wanted to reach in and help them. Now to get into the next one.....

This is the Prequel to the Second Wave books and is Davin's origin story. However, I haven't read any of those books (yet) and this was my first introduction to Davin and the Makanza virus that sweeps through and devastates him and his siblings and his father, not to mention the rest of the world. Street does an excellent job of creating believable characters and sucking you into the storyline so that you feel like you're a part of it with the characters. I was by Davin's side as he fought for his family and succumbed himself to the Makanza virus - and then survives it as something other. This is a masterful set up to the books that come after - or a beautiful explanation of how those books came to be, which ever is the case - and I'll be looking for that first book in the series to see what happens next to Davin!

Davin and his little brothers and sisters are visiting their dad on the Reservation when the sirens go off: Makanza virus has been identified in the res and lockdown is being enforced immediately. The first wave was four years ago; nobody expected a second wave. And here it was. As the only responsible adult in the house, Davin is responsible for his siblings while his dad drinks himself into oblivion. Can he keep them safe?

Reading this four years after the Covid-19 pandemic (wait-- YIKES!), I got really caught up and emotional about the family's quarantine and lockdown. So many things were much more poignant than they would've been if I read this when it came out.

If you're not triggered by COVID talk, I highly recommend this.

I loved this prequel. I read the books in order of publication and fell in love with the mysterious hero, Davin. He's the kind of hero that owns me: fiercely protective, unfailingly strategic, and gentle despite his scars. His origin story is an easily-worth-your-time read if you're a fan of the rest of the series and are dying to know what events shaped Davin to be the hero he is in the other books. Prior to reading this, I was already rooting for him. This one made me more deeply invested in his character. It reminded me that before he became a super human he was simply a human teenage boy. Five stars.

The Second Wave: The Makanza Series, Book Zero by Krista Street was a great read. Two years previous the Makanza virus seemed to be eradicated from the public and they think that their safe. That is until the sirens sound while Davin and his younger siblings are visiting his dad at the Cheyenne River Reservation. The virus has returned and the outbreak seems to be close to their dad's house. Davin had to see all of his family succub to the virus, when he gets a cough. He knows that he will die to the virus, but his body fights it and he gains strange new powers.I enjoyed reading this first installment in The Makanza series.

I have read a few books that deal with pandemic style events but this one comes at it from a totally different point. It surprises but it also involves you. You feel for the characters and I was shocked
at what happened. There are surprises and unfortunately to cover them would provide spoilers and this is a book that you should read, and come across each stage in order, not knowing in advance.
I recommend the book and am glad that I read it first.
I look forward to reading the next in the series.

The Second Wave: The Makanza Series Book 0, my second WOW read/listen from author Krista Street. Well-written & enjoyable & so good Zachary Johnson’s excellent narration made the 2-hour 37-minute read pass quickly and became the voice of Davin in this first person tale told from his point of view. I purchased this back in August after I’d been given an Audible copy of Compound 26 & am voluntarily reviewing it. I need to get Reservation 1 (The Mankaza #2) by this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Good read, action, relevant

This book is relevant given today's world. It presents a perspective of a virus rearing its ugly head in a world that was already devastated by it at one time. The idea that a virus can spread quickly and change our normal is presented with a story that engages the reader. The characters are fleshed out well so that the reader empathizes and relates easily.
Interesting read. Easy and quick to engage the reader. Can't wait to read further about Savin's future.

In the series, we never know firsthand what the world was like during the waves of the virus. This book gives us a peek into Davin's experience with contracting the virus and eventually changing into the Kazzie we follow through Meghan's journey in the series.

It was interesting to view the world through his eyes, especially during such a horrible series of events that would change his life forever. It's heartbreaking, but a fantastic expansion on his character.

Beginning Makanza.

Well written, prequel to the Makanza series. The book filled in some of the unanswered questions that I had while reading the series. It did feel as if the story was truncated compared to the other books, and it felt odd to read the beginning of the series after having read all the other books.
Krista Street knows how to grab your attention and keep it. I really enjoyed this book just as much as the others in the series.

Read it at your own risk

I wanted to start that series but I was like might as well read how it all started. I.CRIED.MY.EYES.OUT. I was literally sobbing almost the whole time. So if you want to know how the story goes then you need a box of tissues. Trust me. You will really need it. It was good but heartbreaking. Recommend but definitely for adult readers only. NSFK (not safe for kids) They may still have hope for humanity.

The Narrator does a fantastic job. and the Author has done an amazing job bringing this story to fruition. I definitely recommend this audiobook. Scariest scenario ever...

Well, that is quite possibly the scariest scenario, and the most likely, to happen to humanity. This is a new author for me and I'm very much impressed with her writing style. I was in the edge of my seat from the first chapter. Now it's time to read the next installment! If you're into apocalyptic reads, this series is going to blow your socks off!

My heart shattered with this telling of how Davin and his siblings came to be infected with the virus. The things he went through as an 18 year old was horrendous. The author's writing keeps you engaged throughout the story and brings it to life for the reader. She builds a world that you can't help but find yourself in.

Heart breaking story. Even knowing that going in, it still got to me. This is the prequel to a series that I think was meant to be read after reading the series. I have not read the series yet, just the prequel but it does set it up nicely. I do not think I'm in the right frame of mind to start the series yet, but I will....eventually.

Surprisingly good.

I have watch movies and read a few books about viruses taking over the world. However for some reason the virus always seems to turn the human into a zombie. It's refreshing to read that the virus actually does what viruses do. And to those that live through turn super human instead.
Great job!!!!

I listened to the audiobook and it was fabulous!! I absolutely love this series and I loved listening to Davin’s POV and how how all of this started.
The narrator did a fabulous job. I did listen to this book out of order but it was fine I didn’t miss a lot and I came to understand what he went through at the beginning. I highly recommend this series!! It’s a must read.

Heartbreaking! Scary as Hell!

This book was heartbreaking. It shows the undying love of a young man forced to make decisions no one should have to make.
Yet terrifyingly scary for it's realistic tragedies.
Have tissues with you when you read and remember this could easily happen to us!

This is very moving backstory to Davin from the Makanza series. A MUST read, I would say! I would love to see a part two to this, about Davin's first years at the Compound 26 with the evil Dr Roberts, and to know more about the other Kazzies. Highly Recommended!

Interesting

This is my first book to read by this author. This is not the type of book I normally read, but I am very glad that I decided to read it. The action starts on page one and doesn't stop until you get to the end of the book.

This was ok. I thought it lacked characterization. Maybe because it was more of an introduction than anything else. I’ll have to see how it goes from a different character’s point of view.

This book is a prequel to a story line I already read. I was still excited to read it, knowing how it was going to end. I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway with my box of tissues nearby. I have now read it twice.

Okay, wow! This was an intense intro to this series. I cried so hard at what everyone went through. I’m really hoping Davin is able to escape and find his mom. Looking forward to reading more.

received this book for free for a honest review. This story was well written and held together. The author portrayed the government how I would imagine them in a time of uncertainty. I loved how the older brother tried to keep the family together. cliff hanger. reccomend

This prequel is sad and leaves a grim look into the dystopian world the author is creating. Since I started with the prequel I’m not sure if it’s needed to full understand but it makes you feel a emotional connection for sure!

It is good to read the back story. I have already read book one about Dr. Meghan and the experiments. I have read up to the point that Davin and the rest of the kazzies are moved from Compound 26 to another location.

Heartbreaking!

Davin's story is profoundly emotional. His youth makes the devastation and loss he endures even more impactful. I commend the author for dedicating time to develop Davin's origin story; it adds significant depth to Compound 26 and enhances the experience of the narrative. I'm excited to continue with the series and see how the characters' journeys unfold.
