Gabriel Farago is the USA TODAY Bestselling and Multi-Award-Winning Australian Author of the Jack Rogan Mysteries Series for the thinking reader and culturally curious.
As a lawyer with a passion for history and archaeology, Gabriel had to wait for many years before being able to pursue another passion—writing—in earnest. However, his love of books and storytelling started long before that.
Born in Budapest, Gabriel grew up in post-War Europe, and after fleeing Hungary with his parents during the Revolution in 56, he went to school in Austria before arriving in Australia as a teenager. This allowed him to become multi-lingual and feel ‘at home’ in different countries and diverse cultures. Shaped by a long legal career and experiences spanning several decades and continents, his is a mature voice that speaks in many tongues.
Gabriel holds degrees in literature and law, speaks several languages and takes research and authenticity very seriously. Inquisitive by nature, he studied Egyptology and learned to read the hieroglyphs. He travels extensively and visits all of the locations mentioned in his books.
‘I try to weave fact and fiction into a seamless storyline,’ he explains. ‘By blurring the boundaries between the two, the reader is never quite sure where one ends, and the other begins. This is of course quite deliberate as it creates the illusion of authenticity and reality in a work that is pure fiction. A successful work of fiction is a balancing act: reality must rub shoulders with imagination in a way that is both entertaining and plausible.’
Gabriel lives in the Blue Mountains in Australia just outside Sydney, surrounded by a World Heritage National Park.
If you like historical thrillers, excitement, mystery and suspense, if you enjoy exotic settings, colourful characters and fast-paced action, if you like to learn about interesting, well-researched subjects that tease your intellect and imagination, then once your step inside, Gabriel will show you his world; the world of the storyteller.
Shaped by a long legal career and experiences spanning several decades and continents, his is a mature voice that speaks in many tongues.
His first book – The Empress Holds the Key – will take you on an exciting quest for a holy relic mysteriously erased from the pages of history. You will be transported far back in time to the reign of Akhenaten, the heretic pharaoh of ancient Egypt, and King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. You will discover a dark secret guarded by the Knights Templar and feared by the Vatican, a mystery that has haunted the Catholic Church for centuries, and can challenge the very foundations of Christianity.
His second book – The Disappearance of Anna Popov – will thrill you in a different way. You will enter the dangerous world of an outlaw bikie gang. You will travel to the remote dreamtime wilderness of outback Australia where the ruler is an evil master, outcasts are heroes, and cruelty and violence are admired and rewarded. You will meet Cassandra, an enigmatic psychic. Using her occult powers to avenge an old, deep wrong, she sets the scene for an epic showdown where the stakes are high and the loser faces death and oblivion.
His third book –The Hidden Genes of Professor K – a medical thriller, was released in July 2016. Cutting-edge medical research meets the ruthless, dangerous world of pharmaceutical empire billionaires, where unbridled ambition and greed threaten to destroy the dreams of a visionary scientist with the power to change the future of medicine, and the journey of man.
A writer like Gabriel, sees the world through a different lens. Using creativity and imagination, He endeavours to weave fact and fiction into seamless stories that have only one aim: to entertain you.
In the last of a 4 book set Jack and his various friends confront the Mafia in Italy and Isis in Syria. There is a kidnapping, the breakup of a Mafia run gambling scheme that attracts the wealthy with a taste for the bizarre which ties in with smuggling Isis suicide bombers from Syria into Turkey and then into Europe, the genetic solution (and more) by the research group in Sydney of the Pope's ailment and a surprise marriage. Again several threads winding up together at the end for a very enjoyable read. I am hoping to find some more Jack Rogan tales, but first I have to whittle down by growing TBR pile..
3 3/4 Stars, rounded up: The summation of Professor K’s vision for healing, this novel helps cure a major character’s health crisis. A mixture of mafia drama/trauma, middle eastern terrorism, and refugee assistance, this book covers a lot of territory. What I liked: the characters; the writing; the crazy, globe-hopping action; the science. What I didn’t like: the dropping of plot lines; the inflicted trauma that seems to have no impact; the suddenly, easily resolved action elements. Overall, a good book, but not my favorite.
Jack Rogan makes a return in this book, as does his girlfriend the brilliant scientist named Alexandra Delacroix, Isis, Tristan and the rest of the gang. Profess K makes cameo appearances in spirit, if not in actuality. There are also some new key figures introduced.
This book has it all: top chefs, Mafioso, assassinations, kidnappings and a very sick Pope.
This is a high action, high adventure thriller. Jack is at his best ferreting out clues and following the trail. An exciting chase through several countries keeps the reader enthralled. There are plenty of subplots and tangents all over the place, which makes the reading more exciting and interesting.
The thing I love about Gabriel Farago’s novels is that the reader gets an in-depth lesson in history, and in this book, also in science. The portion of the story of the Turkish influence was very interesting as were all the little tidbits inserted throughout the book. Very good!
I want to thank Gabriel Farago for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.
Having been introduced to Jack Rogan through the pre-quel The Kimberley Secret, and liking the hero, it was with some anticipation that I started the number 4 volume of the Jack Rogan Mysteries. The books are stand-alone and can be read in any order you like.
Extract from the publishers summary: "A desperate plea from the Vatican. A kidnapped chef. An ambitious mob boss. One perilous game. When Professor Alexandra Delacroix is called in to find a cure for the dying pope, she follows clues left by her mentor and friend, the late Professor K, which lead her on a breathtaking search through historical secrets, some of them deadly. ..."
The story starts at the Topkapi Palace in Constantinople on a dark January morning in 1595. Murad III is dying, and as custom is, all his sons, except the one to inherit the throne, will die with him. Fatma Hatun, one of Murad's consorts is afraid for her own son, Osman, who will die the very same day, if she cannot prevent it. The introduction leads into a world where forgotten art and its hidden messages might provide a cure for a dying pope 500 years later.
Jack Rogan and his friends are out to save the day in this entertaining and thrilling novel. Alexandra Delacroix, a distinguished medical professor trying to find a cure for a deadly disease; Lorenza da Baggio, top international chef; Tristan, a gifted psychic; Dr Amena Algafari a Syrian medical doctor on the run; Salvatore Gambio a mafia boss eager to gain control of his empire; Luigi Belmonte an assassin with ambitions; Antonio Grimaldi chief prosecutor in Florence determined to stop the mafia; a sick pope and a few other characters enrich this plot.
I must admit I found the beginning, with the introduction of the many story lines and characters somewhat overwhelming. I also thought that too many of todays' international problems were used for the story. However, as the plot develops I am hooked and Farago deals very well with the complexity of the story line.
Professor K: The Final Quest is an ambitious story, with historical details mixed with present day phenomena. Jack Rogan appears mostly in the latter part of the story. It does not matter since the other characters are well crafted and makes an interesting mix. One has to admire Farago's knowledge and eye for details, whether they come with complicated medical science, his many different characters or the places.
A fascinating and complicated story. The suspense is building up through the whole novel, and keeps it up until the very end. Unexpected turns, more than once, keep you tied to the pages. While reading, I wondered how so many loose ends would come together? Not to worry. When you come to the end and think you have figured it all out, the story takes another turn...and another.
Enjoyable and thrilling!
Review from my bookblog: thecontentreader.blogspot.com
Book review – Professor K’s Final Quest, by Gabriel Farago.
A book and a painting. These two items form the tie-in for three stories, all linked to the one literary offering. From Topkapi Palace and the Hagia Sophia in Turkey, to the canals of Venice, the art and architecture of Florence, viewing the Aurora Borealis in Reykjavik Iceland, and finally to the streets of Sydney, Australia.
Following a historical introduction which provides a foundation for the story, we are introduced to characters Lorenza, Alexandra, the Countess, Tristan, Leonardo, and the larger than life Jack Rogan. Through a web of intrigue and mystery, I found a story unwinding before my very eyes, with clarity and purpose. The characters seemed so real and the places are portrayed in such a rich and intimate detail.
This is my induction to Gabriel Farago’s writings, and I must say, I am very impressed with his ability to weave a story incorporating so many authentic places and occurrences, thereby making it feel as though it was actually happening. Often I found myself having to look up from what I was reading, just to centre myself back on reality. I even made a point of reading the Main Characters booklet to familiarise myself with some background material before commencing to read the main novel.
It is refreshing to see that a hero that can get things done without the need to carry a gun. Jack’s only real weapons, in this instance, are a brilliant mind and a razor sharp wit. Don’t think for a moment that because the shoot-outs are happening without our hero being on the front line, that the story somehow suffers as a result. It doesn’t!
This is a superb work and has now peaked my interest sufficiently to read the prior novels. The writing is refreshingly unambiguous and almost entirely free of errors. The substance and locations have been exceedingly well researched, and the characters have their own personalities and idiosyncrasies that make you feel as though you are a part of the narrative. There were a couple of areas that I found somewhat predictable, but thankfully the book was tactfully written, and it didn’t really do any harm to the story, or the mystery overall.
Gabriel presents a novel very worthy of an author on the world stage! This is an excellent story, penned by an extremely gifted individual, that is not adverse to getting things right the first time. I highly recommend that you add this to the reading list as a “must read” and do so at your earliest opportunity. Excellent!
Loved it! A must-read for anyone who enjoys a good mystery thriller. I could NOT put it down!
Gabriel Farago has done it again!
Jack Rogan needs a new challenge. For Rogan, experiencing and telling the stories are far more exciting and fulfilling than the solitary feat of writing them. When Jack is contacted to help Tristan and the Countess, he leaps to their rescue. He finds himself enmeshed in several different situations that do not at first seem connected. The Vatican needs Professor K’s gene work and only Jack Rogan can deliver it! Tristan and Lorenza have been kidnapped and are the prisoners of a notorious Mafia figure; Jack Rogan is on hand to help with the rescue.
A master storyteller and wordsmith, Gabriel Farago entertains his readers with vivid descriptions, clear yet complex plots, and realistic characters. His genius at bringing together several characters from previous books to fulfill their moment of destiny is done with great care and attention to detail. Including the Italian Mafia, The Vatican, and Pope, along with IS terrorist, Farago takes his readers on an emotional journey that will leave his readers on the edge of their chair and pondering moments of destiny in their lives!
Farago delivers another fascinating, well-written novel that is action-packed and realistic. Well researched, Farago delivers many instances of destiny, a theme throughout the book.
Don’t miss this book! Although a standalone, it does tie up some loose ends that will leave his readers gasping!
This is a must read, if you love thrillers, Farago delivers!
First of all I must say that this is not a resume of the book. There are already several of them.
Gabriel Farago is an author who caught my interest from the beginning and kept me always sitting on the edge.
In this wondeful book the reader will find a richly complex but not so complicated story. Several storylines masterfully intertwined that could make each one a separate and interesting book.
A top cheff's contest, terrorism, refugees, the Vatican and a very and strangely ill Pope, complicated Mafia crimes, friendship, loyalty, science, history, romance, high action, adventure and much much more can be read and enjoyed in this book.
Gabriel Farago' s style is elegant and very pleasant to read. Nevertheless, he gives the reader the exact portrait in any hard or crude situation. He has the sensibility and the touch to make us laugh, get angy, excited or shed some tears, both of joy and sadness, depending on the scene being read. Fiction and fact are impecably woven.
A very important point is the way he presents Jack Rogan. He does not downplay other characters. The series is named after him, but each one has their own space. They are well developed and definitely coherent.
I specially want to thank Gabriel Farago for sending me a free copy of this great book, which I read and absolutely enjoyed, and now I gladly post this review. Needless to say this novel makes me want much more. Previously I had only read his Letters From the Attic and loved it. Now I am sure I want to read all of his other books, specially those from Jack Rogan' s series.
Just when I thought this author couldn’t come up with a better book he surprises me yet again! I wish I could give this more than 5 stars! This book answers all the questions left by the previous book! It was masterfully written! Jack Rogan has the final painting he found restored and discovers who the true owner is. In the painting he finds out who the men in it are and the elusive book the Nazis were searching for. It has many storylines that are brilliantly woven together. We meet the top chef Europe winner and follow her kidnapping and her famous family and her recipes dating back to ancient Constantinople. We meet up again with Dr Delacroix who is now working on more groundbreaking research. We see Dr. Rosen at a refugee camp treating the massive refugees. Jack travels the globe to solve the unanswered questions still plaguing him. So much happens in this book it’s hard to cover it all. The most important thing to know is this is the best book of the series! I’m sad to see this series end it was that good! I look forward to reading more from this author!
This series has provided some brilliant reading as we follow the adventures of Jack Rogan and his friends whilst they solve a series of historical and scientific puzzles. There are so many things to like about this author's writing, the characters, the plots, the location descriptions and the scientific/medical discoveries that he writes about in a very accessible way. In this book there are several parallel storylines, which the plot switches seamlessly between, all being resolved by Jack and the gang, together with unanswered questions from the previous books. All of human behaviour is represented here, humanity, beauty, love and art as well as debased behaviour, with murder, greed, kidnapping, abuse and deadly gambling all appearing. All wrapped up in great writing which really pulls the reader along. This book could be read as a stand-alone, but it makes a lot more sense if the previous books have been read first, if only for the great way the returning characters are described and brought to life, as their characters are what makes this book come alive. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone who likes intelligent, fast paced thrillers.
Is it a man’s book that women love, or a womans book written by a man. No matter for the reader is captivated from the first few pages to the end. A wonderful mix of adventure seeking and risk taking coupled with titillating dalliances that move the pace along without the lewd language or extravagant behaviour.
Multiple stories in one well crafted volume with fascinating insights to historical and scientific facts cleverly dovetailed in with contemporary phenomena. The sub plots are so intricate with fantastic twists and turns, one feels they may well be based on real facts and experiences of the authors colorful past.
As such it is a very generous read but hardly the book to put down and resume days later. A lovely way to fill a long flight, lazy holiday distraction or anytime you looking for a good read. With so much going on Farago is a master at keeping the reader abreast of the stage with gentle reflections reminding one of the integration with the multiple personalities and episodes playing out.
If you love adventure and intrigue you will devour this latest of the Jack Rogan series.
I was attracted to the book by the title - I have an affinity for medical mysteries and thrillers and I've read much of the literature that is out there. Farago is new to me, so this was a good chance to check out his work.
The medical part of the storyline started out strong with Jack's friend Alexandra and Farago has a lot of the technology correct including CRISPR, PCR and Stem Cells. The author has done his homework to some degree. Farago did weave this in well with the mafia storyline, but there got to be a point in the book when I wondered if we were going to hear anymore about the genetics work in Alexandra's lab, or more about the patient to be treated (no spoiler here). In this regard, my experience is that the book was a little unbalanced, here the medical plot line seemed to disappear for an inordinate amount of time. In the end, the patient was saved, but again - the "treatment" was unbalanced with respect to the way that the medical component of the storyline unfolded. I was disappointed in the ending.
Don't let this deter you. Farago's work is good and I'm sure to read more, but I would not have called this a medical mystery.
I have to say firstly that this is the first book I have read by this author and although it is the fourth in the series I believe it stands alone perfectly well. Exciting, thrilling, clever are just some of the words I would use to describe this book. The author takes all kinds of threads from all over the world, history and such and somehow weaves them together into an exciting thrilling story-line. I often can see where a plot is leading and guess what is going to happen next but not with this novel! There are so many twists and turns and I love that. Also a lot of writers will pad out a book with a story that could have been told in a short story, again not in this book. This book is rich with plots and interwoven story lines that grip you and make you read on. The characters are interesting, diverse and you learn a lot of things in the reading. I love a book like that- intelligent and well written. I think its safe to say I totally loved it! I will be reading all his books from now on. Fabulous book.
The book contains an extensive cast of characters, some of them already known from earlier books in this series. When you haven't read those, you can read this story as a stand-alone, but the background story of the main actors is a continuing tale. Not only the long list of characters can be confusing. There are also several storylines, without an apparent communal factor. There's an international cooking competition, a deadly sick pope, a maffia war threatening to break out, international terrorism, ... When all those elements slowly come together, the book takes off like a rocket and is ever more thrilling and exciting. It's a little hard to get into, but definetly worth the effort. The author has an excellent eye for details. Some descriptions of dishes and recipes really made my mouth water and I'more than a bit curious to try some of the Ottoman recipes, given the chance! I received a free ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
Although this is the final book in the series, it can be read as a standalone, though would be better appreciated if you've read the previous books. This is a cracking fast paced read that has you racing through the pages as the story runs full tilt with the final quest. I loved the historical side to this and thought the characters were well depicted. At no point did I feel that this was just a book to tie up the loose ends from previous books, which I sometimes get from other "last in series" books. It has a story that stands strong on its own merit. I enjoyed this so much that after receiving a complimentary copy from the author, I am voluntarily reviewing it, and I bought it too!!!!
This book was purchased as part of a set of books 1-5 of the Jack Rogan mysteries. This review is a repeat of a review posted on Amazon.
Part of this story relates to "The Forgotten Painting", which I have read and enjoyed, but I was still glad that Gabriel Farago includes a detailed synopsis of that book at the beginning of this one. The synopsis served as a reminder of things that had happened that I had forgotten! As with "The Hidden Genes of Professor K" you are introduced to the possibility of new medical discoveries which are exciting in themselves, as well as the excitement of the story itself. In this adventure, Jack comes up against the Mafia as well as trying to thwart the intentions of IS terrorists. It is a very thrilling read!
My second read of this author - the first being a Novella. I love that he blends them all together so that there are overlaps, but well explained so you don't have to have read a previous work to understand what is going on.
The characters grab you and take you along for a enjoyable, but suspenseful ride. The science involved is 'easy' to follow -- I'm no scientist and I could keep up -- but thought provoking and current with real world accomplishments or research.
I would highly recommend this book, and I dare you not to then read something else written by Gabriel -- I already have!!!
This is the first time I have read anything by Gabriel Farago, but it won't be the last. I am very thankful for having been a Giveaway winner with this book. There's a lot going on in this novel, and there are several people who are involved in happenings from Oslo, Sweden, to Florence, Italy; to Syria, to Istanbul, to Sydney, Australia, to the Vatican in Rome, to Venice, back to Syria and Istanbul, and Venice. There's a lot of back and forth, not necessarily in this order. There is medical history here, including medical research in Sydney, and Jack Rogan, adventurer par excellence. who is searching for a book that appears in a painting. Some really wonderful personalities grace these page, along with some hideously, evil ones. I thoroughly loved it all.
It's been said many times that 5 Stars are not enough to this book. But, believe me in this case 10 Stars would be nowhere near enough. I've read all of Jack Rogan adventures . Always thinking that was the best yet...and, yes I think it agsin. So much information and history about the Counties that are all part of the fantastic storyline. If you haven't read any of Gabriel Fargo Jack Rogan Mysteries you are missing out on the Superb writing of a truly unique author who brings his books and characters to life. Thank you Gabriel once again for an awesome book.
I have received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is my first exposure to Gabriel Farago’s writing and it will definitely not be my last! The author has the same wonderful touch as Dan Brown in weaving a story through the ages with a rich supporting cast of characters. A wonderfully crafted story with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last page. From the Papal palace to the IS stronghold in Dabiq, Syria the story weaves it magic and suspense. A definite page turner!
Once the book gets past the scene setting; it moves at a bit of a faster pace with things coming together and being connected. There is a lot of manipulation and corruption that goes on, with greed also making an appearance. There was one particular character that I thought was in the mafia - but wasn't, though he is involved in other shady activities. At the beginning, there were times where it was a little bit difficult keeping up with certain characters, though I admired Osman for the trials he went through and how he persevered. There end up being some shocking and clever developments in the story as well as a twist. I got an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Loved the book! Tension builds throughout the book. Just as a solution is found and the team's rushes off in pursuit, another development occurs causing the tension to increase once again. How can you fit so much drama and action into one book but still make it cohesive and relevant to the characters involved. Gabriel Farago, you are definitely a master storyteller. Thank you so much for giving the opportunity to read this awesome book.
I have loved this series, and it has provided some brilliant reading. We follow the adventures of Jack Rogan, and allies, whilst they solve a series of historical and scientific puzzles. I could not put the book down, and while you could read it on its own, it is better read as part of the series. The whole series provides for me a lot of interest, especially medical research, archaeology, adventures in the outback, and various places around the world.
Jack Rogan can tell a story and so can the author. How all the different threads come together to make this woven masterpiece is nothing short of brilliance. A dying Pope, a top chef, a painting, a dedicated scientist then throw in some history along side Jack and his friends and you have one back of a ride. Dashing between Venice, Rome, Turkey and Syria is a breathtaking ride. Brilliant!!
This is a gripping thriller that is sure to keep you turning the pages. It is an intricate web of interconnected pieces. There is the mafia, a terrorist plot, an extremely sick pope, a lost painting, a sultan's harem, a book of recipes, and a kidnapped chef. How does it all connect? The puzzle pieces will keep you on the edge of your seat until they come together. I enjoyed this medical thriller full of suspense and would highly recommend it.
Really well-written and answering all the question left at the end of the previous book, this is a thrilling book: filled with action, exciting chases and even chefs, you won't want to miss it.
I love how well researched these books are, how much you learn while reading them. And the characters are full-fledged and by now all of them feeling like old friends.
Professor K was working on genome editing to cure diseases when he died in the first novel. Alexandra is continuing the research on this topic. In this novel you find a cooking contest for Europe's top chef, recipes that are stolen, a kidnapping and a the pope with a series illness. The author keeps you guessing and the plot thickens.
5 November 2018 Format: Kindle Edition I received a free copy from the author but voluntarily reviewed it. Th e views are my own. wow was this an awesome read, great characters, loved the storyline great mix of medical and history . I defiantly recommend this read if you have read the rest of the series , i think this was the best one yet.
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review. I loved it. Jack Rogan finds himself in the middle of a new mystery. He travels from Italy to Turkey, Rome and Australia trying to uncover the mystery of notes that Professor K was looking for before he died. A mystery with history and so many unexpected twists. Gabriel Farago doesn't disappoint with his newest thriller.
Jack Roman is back along with his friends. This medical mystery takes us on an international journey including Italy and Aleppo. Additionally the Mafioso plays a role along with the Vatican. This was a great read, loads of fun. Outstanding cast of characters, non stop action/intrigue and an extremely well written story line makes this a must read.
