Mourning Express is book three in The Funeral Fakers series. Each book stands completely on its own, but you'll have more fun if you read them all together!
A great read but just threw me a bit because it's about another actress who has had her life turned upside down by her brother and ex-boyfriend. Loved the way the character slipped into each persona but still kept the Rosie part going. After being fleeced by the two most important men in her life and being drummed out as a diva she is homeless and broke. (Her brother sold the house by forging her signature) With her Grammy in care she needs money fast. Therefore when one of the workers at the care home suggests she signs up at the mourning agency she does so. Her first job is to read the eulogy for someone universally hated. Was he really as bad as everyone says? The care home worker certainly doesn't think so. The more she finds out, the more she has doubts that it really was just a domestic accident. Pranks, a PI, possible mob connections, a disbelieving police department and a stolen dog have her chasing leads. Can she find out what really happened? Can she win back any of her lost reputation and gain back some self respect?
The Diva Rosalind Devoe is in a tough predicament when she has an all out fit after catching her cheating boyfriend. The sad part is that Rosalind didn’t really care about the cheating jerk, but her outburst earned her the Hollywood name and now she is stuck with it. It’s like no one knew her name until this dramatic incident and now the rumor mill is keeping at it. Her louse of a twin brother doesn’t help the situation when he takes their Grandmother for all she is worth leaving Rosalind holding all the responsibility. Her career was already on thin ice and it takes a nose dive after her Diva moment. Now Rosie is looking for any job she can get. Without her best friend Gabe and his temperamental but very sexy cousin Mateo, Rosalind would be out on her caboose. Her first priority is taking care of her Grammy and making sure that she always has a place for her and her trusty pooch, Burt Lancaster Jr. Rosalind will do any and everything to take care of her Grammy. The bills just wont stop coming in waves and she is desperate for a gig. When Grammy’s nurse Pearl offers a suggestion, Rosalind at first says no, but pride doesn’t pay the bills. Being a professional mourner is not something that Rosalind ever saw herself doing, she can’t even believe that people would hire someone to attend a funeral. After taking on her first appearance and having to do a eulogy for one of the most hated people she has ever come across, Rosalind ends up biting off more than she can chew. Trying to give a little back to Nurse Pearl after discovering her secret relationship to Harold Baumgartner and experiencing the explosive attitude between her and his nephew Bowman. Rosalind finds herself wrapped up in a theory and thanks to support from Gabe and Mateo she follows through with her theory and puts herself in unexpected danger. This book was filled with laughs and animation. I never thought of professional mourning as a career, but for the right actresses or actor there could be great money to be made. I am going to be looking for the other books in this series to see how many amateur sleuths are in the making. I hope there will be a follow up for Rosalind Devoe.
Less twisty and more character driven, Mourning Express was a great edition to the series. I'm so glad K.M. Waller will be writing more about these characters!
Lost Souls ParaAgency and the Illusion of a Vampire #3 – This is my first read by this author and I loved it. I did not know this was a series, there were a few mentions of the past, but it did not take away from this book – a standalone for sure. The storylines are interesting with plenty of humor. The characters, even the baddies, are interesting and believable. None of them acted stupid and some even had intelligence.
There is an event mentioned but not delved into so it is a nice surprise to find the details after the story ended. Looks like there will be another character added to the gang in the next book. I had so much fun reading this book that it finished too soon with the steadily moving pace. The mystery is a good one, better than the usual cozy. There is an overview, which I appreciate knowing about a book before I read it. I found this book on Booksprout. 4*
Right Witch Wrong Time #5 – While I was reading Mourning Express, this book popped up on Booksprout. Again, being clueless about this series and having enjoyed the last two books I read, I thought, why not. This book is different from the other two concerning the low level of humor because of the serious mood in the storylines. The storylines are interesting, but time travel to the 80s wasn’t my cup of time, I didn’t like the 80s. The mysteries the investigator worked on were interesting, a daughter discovering her mother who died at childbirth. Still a good book to read, just not for me. 4*
Mourning Express #3 – After reading Lost Souls #3, I discovered this book in my library. I had read Sam Cheever’s addition to the Funeral Fakers, loved it, and thought why not read this one, too. Well written with interesting storylines, even though it is sad about Grammy, there was plenty of humor, some out loud bursts. The characters are well written and entertaining, with plenty of good dialog. Rosie actually has a bit of IQ about her. The mystery was not bad, with the usual redirects. 4*
I really enjoyed this quirky book. I wasn't sure about it at first because let's face it who likes funerals but the picture and blurb did sound like it could be funny. So I gave it ago, glad I did because it was funny and not a single tear was shed. I liked the unusual plot line and the mystery worked well with plenty of suspects to keep you guessing who was the killer. The group of characters were likeable enough that they pulled it off well and you could easily picture it on the tv. I hope there are more books in this series to come because I would like to see how the romance and job hunt turn out for Rosie. Rosie is behind in her rent, she is having to hide from the admin at her grandmother's nursing home and avoid men with subpoenas and find a lawyer over a slight mishap which involved a fire. All of this is the only reason she takes on the role of a life time......well okay not quite but it will need her to do her best acting. She is being paid to give a eulogy for a man she doesn't know and everybody hated. As she digs into his past to find something nice to say she begins to question if the police have got it right ruling his slip in the shower accident. The problem is her reputation as a C-list celebrity diva proceeds her and they won't listen. Time to dust of those acting skills and old wigs. Rosie has a murder to solve. I liked the narrator she used her voice well to express emotion and excitement, making the story come to life with every sentence.
Rosie’s acting career is over. And now she needs money, and fast. She needs to pay rent and also her Grammy’s rent for the nursing home she’s in. And she needs money for other basic things, like, you know, bananas. Exit Stage Left needs another actress, so that’s a new job opportunity. But it’s hard to keep a low profile when you’re somewhat famous. Her downfall from Hollywood is all over social media and she’s known as an attention-seeking diva. When there’s doubts over whether the deceased slipped and fell (accident) or was pushed and fell (thus murder), she starts investigating and doesn’t give up. And actually, she’s not like a diva at all, she’s kind and caring and giving. Not bitter which would have been easy with all the misfortune she’s had. I really liked her. And I appreciate the nod to Pride and Prejudice with her last name Collins.
I loved this book. Well-written, page-turnery, suspenseful, and fun. I didn’t know whodunit until the very end. Rosie does some things that had me yelling “don’t do that, no, what are you doing!” But she IS brave and smart. And things get mighty dangerous… This was a new-to-me author and now I have bought and pre-ordered her other books too, that’s how much I loved it!
Mourning Express is my favorite in The Funeral Faker series so far. I loved Rosie and her determination to do a job well. With a bad rep following her as a diva, she's struggling to find a job when she takes on the role of a professional mourner.
Her first job highlights her past and bad reputation when she's asked to give a eulogy for a man she's never met. A man that everyone seems to hate. But as she digs deeper into the man's past as research for her role, she finds out that his death was no accident at all.
With the help of her best friend - who just happens to be a stellar make-up artist - and her roommate, she takes on several really fun roles to try and find out the truth. While she hates her reputation as a diva, she finds that having made a name for herself isn't all that bad sometimes - and actually helps on occasion.
A great mystery with some of my favorite characters.

This was a fun read! K. M. Waller had me laughing out loud with the situations Rosie finds herself in. Her antics with her acting career and trying to find a way to earn money to help take care of her grandmother will have you chuckling and gasping in shock.
This was the first book I've read in the Funeral Fakers series, and I will read more of the books. This had a little bit of everything...murder, mystery, excitement, relationships, friends, family, humor, and a potential relationship with her friend's cousin...who happens to be her roommate(!).
This is one of the books that I will recommend to friends when they want a light read with lots of giggles thrown in.
While I still love the concept of the professional mourners, this book fell short of of its predecessors. Rosie is flagged as a diva, and that kills her professional acting options. She's thus forced to join Professional Mourning. Her first assignment - deliver the eulogy for the most hated man in town - and then risk becoming next in the coffin lineup. Once again, a PI is involved in solving the "did he fall or was he pushed?" conundrum - there's a disappearing dog - and an ultimately reasonably satisfying ending.
A diva worth loving! The world and the tabloits might see her as a diva, selfish and not afraid to speak her own mind, even when it hurts others. But we, readers of this story, get to know the real Rosalind, Rosie. She loves her Grammie and would do anything for her one remaining relative. And when she smells injustice, she traces the culprit till the end. Even if the victim is seen by almost everyone around as an even worse person than diva Rosalind. Wonderful story! I received a copy and chose to review it.
Rosie is an actress who left LA under a cloud of notoriety after a YouTube video "exposed" her diva-behaviour and went viral. But her reputation follows her home to North Carolina.
I loved the background of an actress struggling to support herself in Asheville, North Carolina, including as a paid mourner at funerals. Her Grammy, Burt Lancaster, Jr [the dog], mob threats, Pastor Tom, Teddy the Gangster--a lot of wonderful characters and a fun mystery. This could easily be the start of a new series!
Rosie has been labeled a diva but what she really is is kind and caring and struggling to keep things together for her granny. I hope Rosie returns because she needs to resolve the brother situation. Rosie goes beyond her job to help others. I love that she does tons of research instead of jumping head first into messes. Gabe is a wonderful friend and I loved that Mateo turned out to be one as well. Rosie needs a lot of support on her side so it was great to see the guys help her. Good twist to the murder. Would definitely love to see Rosie return.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my honest review. I love this series and Mourning Express is no exception. Rosie is back home after getting into big trouble in LA, through no fault of her own. She is trying to pay for her Grammy's stay at a fancy retirement home, fend off lawyers and lawsuits and needs a job. She goes to work for "Exit Stage Left" and the fun starts when she goes to her first assignment. I loved this book and recommend it.
Rosie and her diva tantrum with the cheating ex boyfriend lands her without a job in acting plus she now has to support her Grammy after her brother takes everything. Becoming a professional mourner is just the job to save her family and more. Can she keep herself safe from harm while a PI looks into the death of her first job. Read this fun, quirky and suspenseful book along with the series books before this one. We all need to read something to make us smile.
Rosie kind of stands out wherever she goes and not in a good way. Rosie has been branded a troublemaker. She was paid to be a speaker at a funeral for a man hated by his neighbors. Rosie thinks he was murdered but no one will listen because of her reputation. How can anything go wrong? This is the third in a standalone series of paid mourners. This one might have seemed a little far fetched but it us funny and intriguing. The characters seem real that I was really rooting for Rosie to succeed.
Rosalind Devoe an actor is going through some bad publicity and was cheated by her twin brother out of inheritance when their mother died leaving her to take care of their Grammy. Being out of work she took a job as a Mourner at funerals to help pay the bills. Rosie get involved thinking that the deceased in her first assignment was murdered. Her roommate's help her out investigating suspects and she gets herself into trouble!
A very enjoyable reading experience. The plot was fun and the twists and changes in the story kept my interest. To say it was funny is putting it mildly. Imagine being a rented mourner for people you did not even know. Rosie is such a diva, and tries to do the right thing, but it always blows up in her face. All of the characters were real to life and very authentic. Highly recommend this book to anyone who like a funny story with interesting characters.
Can Rosie solve the mystery of Harold’s death? She is hired as a fake mourner I his funeral and has to give an eulogy praising the man when everybody seems to hate him. And no one takes her seriously after coming back to Ashville from L.A., without an acting job due of some fame problems. Funny and entertaining story.
I really enjoyed this latest Funeral Fakers book! I felt so bad for Rosie. It can be so hard to change people's impressions and perceptions, especially when everyone really wants to think badly of you. I loved her heart, and I enjoyed getting to read about her friends. Definitely another great book!
Such a fun series!! In this book, Rosie is an actress who was involved in some diva-like behavior. She returns home to be near her grandmother, who is in a nursing facility. A man that one of the aides cleaned for dies and she believes it was murder. Rosie is hired as a mourners for him and investigates. Highly recommend!!
There were some good twists but this tale lacks depth. There are hints at the backstory but not enough to fully invest me in reading any sequels (assuming they exist). The narration was well done and you could tell the characters apart fairly well.
Not my favorite book of late.
—I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
As a fan of K. M. Waller, I am elated at any opportunity to read her books. While reading, I found myself laughing at the antics of Rosie. I'm sure that reading this book will be enhanced by reading the entire series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
With the world out to get her, she will not lie down and play dead! To make some money she undertakes to deliver an eulogy at a funeral. That leads her straight into a murder case! Good story line with quite a few giggles!
Entertaining, fun and a great addition to the series. I definitely recommend. This fun journey and quite a predictament for the heroine. Bate and con pickle.
I volunteer to read an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Rosie is a laugh a minute. Her life couldn't be more of a mess and becoming a professional mourner is her way to fast cash. The problem with Rosie is she doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut or stay out of someone else's problem.
I 'm really enjoying this series, but wish I could read more about the same characters in the next book. 😁 The character development and story lines are well developed and it would be nice to go further with them.
Rosie is a has been from Hollywood who returns home to help take care of her grandmother who is in an assisted living home. She takes a job as a professional mourned and soon gets involved in a murder mystery. Very fun book to read!
I've been reading these out of order and they've all been well written. This one wasn't my top it seemed to drag a bit and I didn't love the main character. However, it was still a good read.
This books are so much fun! Rosie is a out of work actress known for her drama. Rosie needs cash to help pay for her grandmother 's nursing home, her rent and to pay off debt. She takes a job as a mourned only to feel as the the deceased has been murdered.
I loved Mourning Express! This is a fun and interesting mystery. The book is well written and detailed. The characters are interesting and relatable. The book is suspenseful and has many twists. There is mystery, humor, suspense and a touch of romance. This is a fun book to read. I highly recommend it!
