Matthew Howard is the pen name of a significant number of atoms which organized themselves to produce a biochemical activity so complex and so advanced that the resultant organism is expected to continue its self-awareness for at least as long as it takes to finish two more cups of coffee.
Matthew consists primarily of electrons and the nuclei they orbit, but he remains under constant bombardment by photons of varying frequencies. Millions of microorganisms colonize him every second of the day, even when he is sleeping.
His hobbies include traveling through time at the rate of one second per second, looking at cats on the Internet, and metabolizing liquid carbohydrates. He has never merged with a symbiote, nor been infested by a xenomorph, nor been overtaken by an artificial intelligence in the service of any dystopic overlord.

Meteor Mags is a 105 year young half-human pirate smuggler anarchist punk-rockstar and genius scientist with a cat tail and a bad temper. She is simultaneously a lovable auntie with a passion for music and a heartless mass murderer. Her sidekick is Patches, a bullet-proof killer cat.
I was very glad the book started with a summary of previous events as I wouldn't have been able to understand everything without it. Mags' backstory is so insane and so much anime-esque craziness kept happening, crazy cat lady does not even begin to cover it. Mags is at war with GravCorp, who have stolen her work on artificial gravity, and also with the Dragons (the descendants of dinosaurs who left Earth before their kin went extinct and now want their planet back). There are a lot of big guns and bloody battles.
All the stories are fast paced and full of action, and just a little bit too violent and gory for my personal taste, but I enjoyed this book a lot.
I'm not sure how all that manages to successfully coexist between two covers, either, but somehow, this book manages the feat. In spite of the violence and rather extensive cursing, it's a run read.
This is not the first published work to deal with Meteor Mags. It is, however, my first exposure to her and her motley crew of misfits and rescues. The author has attempted to fill in the gaps by way of an introduction, which summarizes the broad strokes of Mags's adventures. Unfortunately, I didn't find that it was enough to keep me from being very much lost. (While we learn about Mags's doings, there isn't much in the way of setting up the fictional universe, so I had a hard time understanding the setting).
Still, the swashbuckling spirit and generous - but murderous! - hearts of Mags and her cohort are endearing and engaging. The character development is especially strong, which is impressive as there are many characters making appearances! Mags, herself, is a bit of a bundle of contradictions, but that's what makes her so compelling.
All in all, it's great fun to read, although (and I do believe this is the author's intent), it shouldn't be taken overly seriously.
