Cute sweet story

Really liked this. The Hero and heroine were nice and they really loved each other but he was as keeping a secret. He had borrowed this strangers identity after he died, with the guys permission too and went and ran a saloon. He was doing really well but the strangers Father is coming for a visit so he needs to figure out how to tell her. I kept hoping the old man would act a certain way but he didn't and there is a little angst. She's almost kidnapped and she is really feisty yet had a good good heart and the town loves them and the ending is really great. I am going to read the whole series.

This book was a little...sassier than I expected. There is language (damn, bitch, whore, whorehouse), but still fits the clean romance trope as there are no on page sex scenes.

As a half-Irish half-Scottish girl, I could empathize with Charity when it came to being sad or being downright ANGRY. Don't mess with us ;)

This could have done with another round of editing and proofreading as there were several spelling and punctuation errors throughout.

I can't wait to read more of this series!

This book was a slow starter for me. Historicals are not my go to when I want to read something. HOWEVER, I am sooooo glad I read this book. It was very engaging. The world building was very good. I enjoyed reading about the individual struggles of Lewis and Charity. I am so glad they got their HEA. Will definitely continue reading in this series.

Wonderful story

I loved this story. Charity is a hot headed loveable character and Lewis's mail order bride. Five women broke and soon to be homeless agree to go to Angel Creek to all be mail order brides. This adventure is very entertaining and exciting. Many twist, turns and secrets build this story into a real page turner. I hope you treat yourself to this book as well as the others in the series. I highly recommend you read all titles by Sylvia McDaniel

Sweet Historical Christmas Romance

I love how this starts out as a story telling the children in the family how the 5 friends left Charleston and moved to Angel Creek! It's a unique perspective and it gives us the happy ever after, even before the story gets told!

Reviewed at Historically Romantic

Charity is the first story in the multi-author series, Angel Creek Christmas Brides. I absolutely loved the way this story was introduced. It’s a unique way to capture a reader’s immediate attention and get them hooked on learning more… right now. And, no, to say more would spoil it – but that introduction lead me into a touching romance that captured not only my attention but this reading heart as well.

Charity is one of five close friends whose lives have forever been changed by the Civil War. Her home was purchased for the back taxes owed, and the new owner wanted Charity as one of “his girls” in the new gentlemen’s club he was planning for her former home. Angered, disgusted and desperate Charity bought a newspaper and shared her plan with her close friends. A new life could await them all in Angel Creek, Montana – it would be a risk, but what did they truly have to lose at this point.

Lewis is building a future based on a lie, one that he hopes he can hold on to until he can buy the saloon from its actual owner… the father of the man whose name he’s using. He never figured his friend’s father would send him a mail order bride, but without giving away the truth he soon found himself a married man. He never expected to fall in love with his lovely bride – or how close he’d come to losing everything that truly mattered.

I enjoyed myself so much in this world. Charity is full of interesting characters, intriguing situations and an obvious growing love between Charity and Lewis. Each are holding back secrets that they believe will change how the other sees them. Each is falling in love with the stranger they married. Now it’s time to discover how real that love is in the middle of difficult times. This story will easily grab your attention and not let go until the end… which only sets you up for the next friend’s story. I would not hesitate to recommend Charity to any Western Historical Romance reader. To be fair to those reader that it would matter to there are a few bits of rough language, and a married couple having sex behind closed doors. I personally found nothing offensive about this story at all… but I know that each reader is different. I plan on binge reading this series over the next few days – and I hope you’ll give it a chance to capture your emotions as well.

(The only thing I would change about this series would be to give each story a different, unique to the story within cover — yes, that does matter to me since I’m a visual reader who remembers books by their covers)

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

This is an OK Western romance, with mostly likable characters. It is a sweet romance, and does not contain sex scenes. There were a few editing problems, and I thought the story was a bit too unrealistic.

I did get a little irritated with Charity and Lewis a few times, because they should not have kept so many secrets from each other. She should have told him why she had to leave Charleston, and what she did right before she left. He should have told her that he was impersonating another man. If they had just been honest with each other, most of their problems could have been avoided. It always bothers me when a couple has problems for dumb reasons like Charity/Lewis had -- seems like the author does it just to add unnecessary angst.

One thing, and this is just my personal opinion, but I thought it was pretty inappropriate for Charity to tell the children the story of how she met/married Lewis. Some of it was not suitable for children to hear. The story says she left out those details, but I don't see how she could have really told the story without them.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Charity by Sylvia McDaniel is the first book in the series Angel Creek Christmas Brides.

This story starts out in Charleston after the Civil War. Both of Charity's parents are deceased and a carpetbagger has bought their home. As such Charity knows she's about to be homeless and is scared. However, before that happens, the carpetbagger proposes that Charity can continue to live there, provided she becomes his head whore. Charity finds and reads Grooms Gazette and talks her four girlfriends, all in similar stages of homelessness, they should all move to Angel Creek in Montana as mail-order brides. Before the five girlfriends leave Charleston, Charity does something that comes to haunt her later. Each of the five ladies meet and marry them grooms the day they arrive in Angel Creek. If after 30 days, the couples don't wish to remain married, no problem.

Charity's new husband is also hiding a couple big secrets from Charity. Will the truth come out?

I loved this story!! It is a sweet falling in love story between Charity and Lewis. There was more than the token angst between the two MC, which made their story much more real. I did, however, wish the other four ladies were a bit more prominent in the story. Yes, they each have their own stories to come. But the five ladies being best friends, they just didn't interact enough.

The editing on the book was terrible! Near the beginning of the book, two complete sections were repeated twice! These were major errors and the biggest reason I gave this book 3 stars. Later in the book, there was an incorrect tense of a word ("groaned" instead of "groan") used for the sentence. And further on I the book, a sentence appeared to say "to out" except it read "o t out". These are all easy to catch errors, even the smaller word one. There should have been better proofreading and editing on this books.

Regardless of the above mentioned errors, I thoroughly enjoyed reading and living Charity's love story and look forward to reading Julia's story.

Charity is the first book in Sylvia McDaniel’s Angel Creek Christmas Bride series. In it, she introduces her readers to two dynamic characters—Charity Kingston and Lewis Brown. The aftermath of the Civil War wreaks on the lives of those left behind. Charity is one of those. Destitute and about to lose the family home. She talks her four friends to travel to Angel Creek, Wyoming as mail-order brides. The women meet their intended at the town’s church. Charity meets and marries Jakob Lewis Huntington, her intended. But the man she marries is not Jakob Huntington but is Lewis Brown, an acquaintance of Jakob’s. Both Charity and Lewis keep the truth from the other. What happens when the demons from their pasts emerge? Will they conquer them or will it ruin their marriage? You must read this book to find out.

Ms. McDaniel does a remarkable job with this historical western romance. She set it in the American west after the civil war. Both her lead characters strive to escape the horrific times in the East by finding a new life out west. She infused her western romance with a sympathetic heroine, a strong irresistible hero, emotion tension as they both wrestle with their conscious and truth. Her plot is believable with an HEA. She adds a splash of suspense through the two antagonists—John Roberts III seeking revenge on Charity and Thomas Huntington seek justice for his son Jakob. I enjoyed this historical western romance. Nicely done, Ms. McDaniel.

Charity and Lewis both had secrets. She was a mail order bride, fleeing a carpetbagger bordello owner after trashing her home-his next business site. Lewis is the groom she marries as soon as she gets off the train in Angel Creek. But Lewis is not the man she believes him to be. Both will have to face their pasts, before they can move forward.

This is a really good book. I read it in one evening, because I refused to stop until the end. I loved Charity's moxie-her temper led her a few times, but for the good. I also liked that she went against her upbringing to step in and help Lewis in the saloon. She was appropriately named, since she was known for her giving spirit. Lewis, with his friendly, easy-going ways, was perfect for her. He was accepting of her lack of cooking ability and appreciated her positive attributes. When problems arose, they stuck together. If you enjoy sweet love stories with a suggestion of heat, you'll like this one.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest opinion, and was not otherwise compensated.

Awesome and most wonderfully crafted story. It's a must read.

I loved this first story. in this Christmas series. Sylvia McDaniel is a wonderful author who has to have a great adventure all her stories plus great heros and heroines. I loved both of these characters and their banter and how he can't get over how he had gotten this beautiful, feisty, red headed Irish woman as is wife. She is something else and he knows never, ever cross this woman.
She wonders after all she's been through as a Southern woman all alone after the war, she was so lucky to get him, the most handsome, hardworking, honest, caring man as her husband.
This is such a great story, you won't want to miss. This series as I go forth, I know will be wonderful, all the books. Please read this series and this first story even if they are Christmas stories as the premise behind this series is sensational. I don't think you'll be sorry at all, in fact these stories, at least this one was very good, funny, inspirational, and had me very happy and in many spots laughing out loud.

The 'historical-romance' tag can cover so much. Often it means regency or something equally grand and pompous. In this case it is early Americana. Angel Creek Montana to be exact.

In this first book of the series, Angle Creek appears rather tame for the "wild west." A saloon with no dancehall girls. The gunfighters have colds. The drunks get sent home while they can still stand upright. Yeah, doesn't sound too "wild" to me either. The bar down the street from me is wilder than this.

BUT . . . One must remember this is the remembrances of an old woman as being told to her great-grandchildren. The whole story is obviously edited for young ears with only the best memories being shared. So be prepared for toothache inducing sweetness.

In spite of the all the sweetness, Charity is a well written story with enough substance to hold my attention. I did enjoy it.

Charity had lost nearly everything in the war all her family and now she was losing her home and to make things worse the man who brought her home wanted to turn her in to a whore. So she and her four friends become mail order brides. Lewis had taken the place of a man who he had helped to hide from his father but things get complicated when the friends dad sends him a mail order bride. I loved this story the characters have secrets that come back to haunt them. They start as strangers but become close as the story unfolds, such a great read I really enjoyed and am looking forwards to reading the other women's stories.

Lewis/Jakob and Charity

This is a great story of tragedy and great love. Lewis took Jakob's identity upon Jakob's death. Lewis felt this was necessary to find another life free from his father's threats against him. Charity's whole family had died as a result of the war between the North and the south. She was being threatened by a carpetbagger trying to force her to work in a brothel. Being a mail order bride was were only salvation. Did Lewis and Charity survive their trials and did the find their happily ever after? You will enjoy finding all the answers when you read this story. I really enjoyed it and feel you will to.

This is a pleasant story of five friends ready to leave Charleston after the Civil War. So few men returned from the war in their region that the ladies had little hope of marrying. When Charity found an ad in a matrimonial magazine, there was an ad for five women to come to Angel Creek (one of the unlikely coincidences in this tale).

The story is carried by the evolution of past problems Charity and Lewis bring to the marriage. Neither disclosed this info before their marriage, so they worried about their difficulties coming to light.

When the author described them, a few things were unclear, but they emerged as the story progressed. Overall score = VG.

Charity is in dire straits and is desperate to get out of her current situation when she finds an advertisement for a mail order bride. That was enough to peak my interest. What would a person do if they were in that situation and Sylvia McDaniel's story of Charity and Lewis was gripping and heartwarming. As with any good story there were times I was at the edge of my seat wondering where it was going next or what was going to happen to get the characters out of their current situation but I didn't want the story to end. I absolutely loved Charity and Lewis's story.

Reading Charity and Lewis's story was pure magic. Charity is a woman of courage and strength that shows in everything she does as she heads west to become a mail order bride. Lewis, her bridegroom, is not without his own secrets. But as they come to learn about each other and work together, enduring the hardships, their love begins to blossom. A story so beautifully written with the hardships of the west, it is a read for all ages. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would like to thank the author for gifting me "Charity". My opinion is my own. 5 Stars!

It’s a perfect Sunday afternoon read for anytime of the year. After the Civil War, so many women were left without their man, family or homes, that the Mail Order Bride idea took root once again. Men out west needed women to be help-mates on farms, in business and in homes. Seeking brides became big business. This is the first book in a series when five women head west to Angel Creek to marry the man they hope will be kind, trustworthy and selfless. This is a really nice story-line and I loved it.

Always and forever?

Charity and Lewis are both looking for new beginnings can they find a new life and create a future together in Angel Creek?
Or will the ghosts of their pasts catch up with them and cost them everything?
I really enjoyed that this story is told as Charity's memory, as a Christmas tradition all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren gather excitedly to listen once again to the story's they know by heart, it is a very sweet twist to the usual historical romance.
This is book one of a multi author series, all of which are available on Kindle Unlimited.

Comfort read like watching an episode of Gunsmoke

Post Civil War, 5 southern helped from Charleston head to Montana. This is the story of Charity whose brother and parents died during the war and her house has been sold to a man who wants to turn it into a brothel and Charity one of "the employees." Her husband is pretending to be a man who died to escape an overbearing father who wants his illegitimate son to be in the military. Lewis and Charity fall in love but will secrets break them apart. Like I said like watching an episode of a tv western.

very well written story. Of two people who had a rough life in many ways even after they meet. They needed a miracle to make it through. It is exciting, suspenseful, intriguing and so much more. I found my comfy spot and stayed up real late reading this. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.

Good Irish mail order bride wins

Author has a good plot of an Irish maiden who becomes a mail order bride. Her groom to be is acting as if he’s someone else. Irish temper flares from time to time while his the grill temper flares when someone bothers his new bride. The characters are believable and well written. If you’re Irish you’ll enjoy this story.

Keeps your attention

Nicely written novel that keeps your interest and keeps you wanting to know what happens next, so many different lives mingling together.

I can’t recommend this to my advanced reading preteen friends it does contain language and references toward sexual issues.

Great start to this series

Loved this story!

This was a great story and beginning of the series. I stumbled upon #14 first and decided to read more of the series, best to start at #1. Very happy I did. Fell in love with the characters and their love story. Could be stuck in this series for awhile, as there are so many.

My Musings

This such a well written book with compelling characters and a heartfelt plot. Charity is so feisty and Lewis is a great hero. They work together, and although it's a short time for love to grow, it does in a believable way. Glad I found this one in Kindle Unlimited. Happy reading!
