Once you master this easy testing method, you'll no longer struggle to decide what to eat, but get trusted information from your own body. The book includes a wealth of food lists, easy-to-customize recipes, and information that will help you on your journey to on-going health and wellness. “With her groundbreaking new book, The Food Codes, Lana Nelson gives us a way of living and relating to food that has been desperately needed for as long as people have been around. You don’t have to wonder anymore about what to eat. You don’t have to be pulled this way and that way by the constantly changing ideas of science (and your friends’ opinions) about what foods are good for you and what foods are not. You can simply ask. The Food Codes makes the abstract idea of communicating with your own subconscious mind simple and concrete. Imagine. Your food needs, what’s good for you and what’s bad for you, are different from my food needs. Everyone is different, and that’s what makes The Food Codes so eminently useful. So, you can stop listening to everyone else, change your relationship with food entirely, and start eating what your body really wants and needs. What a concept!" ~Dr. Bradley Nelson, Author of The Emotion Code
This book was not what I was looking for. I wanted a book on intuitive eating but this one is about like a new age-y way to talk to your subconscious to create your own internal diet.
I admit, I was drawn in for a moment. Lana Nelson writes well and comes across in a charismatic manner where it seems like she genuinely cares about you (the reader) and truly wants to help you. She writes in a way that makes me think I'd want to hug her if we met in real life.
I tried all the "muscle testing" in the books and the more I tried it, the more stupid I felt. I believe in following one's intuition and I believe there's truth to your body knowing what you need to eat. I don't think a swing test or any of the other tests she recommends will connect you to that information. That took me way out of the fake science new age blend. I was sad because there were parts I agreed with, but that was just a step too far.
It's an interesting book and I don't think it's a bad read, but I do think it might be dangerous for less critical readers if they take this "method" and use it for health and nutrition. While Food Codes talks a lot about flavor profiles, it never mentions macro or micro nutrient breakdowns. Whether or not your body tells you to eat a ton of iceberg lettuce, it's never going to have the nutrition of some other darker leafier greens. And whether or not you body tells you to eat raw vs cooked, some foods nutrients can only be consumed raw and some can only be accessed through cooking.
I kept reading and I'd started loosening up like "ok that won't work for me for a bunch of reasons but it might work for other people" like talking myself into the possibility. Then Nelson has a section where she talks about how one can use the muscle test for a pet's health. My subconscious might know what I need to eat, but no way am I buying that it knows what random animals need to eat.
Did I miss the full list of foods that we should test for, or was it really not included (not even as a bonus because I checked the website). Also, a flow chart would have been helpful to follow at the end of the book since there were so many subcategories of testing that were mentioned.
As someone who has tried many different kinds of diets and had little success with them helping my autoimmune condition, I like the concept of this method. I am a firm believer in the emotion/body code and I look forward to trying this!
Fantastic book that makes it easy to understand how I can self muscle test for the foods that work best for my body! I can’t wait to start doing this, as I’ve struggled since grade school with some weight issues, and it’s confusing and challenging to find foods that are ideal for me only. Very good book!
