You’d hate your mom too, if she put a cursing curse on you. Yeah. I can’t curse out loud. Ever.
So when I get accused of murdering a vampire, the best I’ve got is, “Mother duck!”
It gets even bleeping better when I find out my arse of an ex-boyfriend is leading the investigation against me. Have I fantasized about being chained up by a hot dragon shifter? Yeah, but not like this.
I mean, how am I supposed to prove I didn’t kill Georgina the loudmouth buttface?
I'm a wingless fairy without a stinkin' scrap of power in a town full of supernaturals. Who’s gonna believe me?
If I don't want to spend a lifetime in a fudgin' dungeon, I’m gonna have to find the real killer, and fast. Unfortunately, the further I dig, the more motives I find. Georgina didn’t make a lot of friends.
To top it all off, I meet the world’s sexiest vamp. And guess what? I think he did it.

I read this off a recommendation from a friend and wish I would have found this treat earlier! Lyon Fox is a paranormal mystery cozy read and as a new genre for me this was a page turner! The entertaining dialogue, the outrageous behavior and Lyon’s undying need for jellybeans or any sweet treat to destress; makes this series a top recommend!
Since I'm all caught up with Ann Denton's Tangled Crowns series I could pick up another series by her. And this was the series that spoke to me most ever since I subscribed to the newsletter and saw the covers for this series. The covers for this series somehow resonated with me. It's very likely the mix of colors giving this series a unique vibe. And when I saw that this was a mysteries series set in a supernatural town I got even more excited to get started.
Normally I take a little break in between reading books, in this case I just finished another book and started this one right away. I therefore needed a few chapters to really get into this story, mostly because this story is really written in the unique tone of voice of our heroine. The sentences aren't polished, there are loads of abbreviations and since I'm Dutch I wasn't familiar with all of them. The supernatural town and all its characters are also quite overwhelming at first.
However, once the murder was committed and the mystery solving started I was sucked into the story and started to love it more and more with each page. And that's mostly because in a perfect and natural way Denton shows us the town, introduces us to Lyon and the important people in her life while also telling us quite a lot about her past and the kind of life she must have had. Without info-dumps Denton actually uses the case to build and explain her world.
And slowly I also grew attached to Lyon. Of course, it's only natural to get attached to a main character when it really feels like you're reading their inner thoughts and feelings, but I also quite liked her determination and the way she handled things. On top of that there was a certain kind of clumsiness added, making her even easier to like and also quite relatable even though she's a magical creature.
This was pretty fun and easy reading. I liked idea very much. Thought the plot was not very complex, it wasn't like hard to guess who the real killer is. There was also some not properly explained happenings or things characters said. It was usually something to get plot going forward and build mystery 'who is the guilty' (like in Agatha Christie books), but actually those didn't really make sense in the big picture. Also some dialogue sometimes were nonsensical. However I liked consept, this was cozy and entertaining easy reading. More youth book than adult book, but I don't mind. This was not authors best book, but likeable anyway in the sweet way.
Confusing part was, that you can find book in different author name and book name in Amazon. You can find this book by name Anna Dare: Sucking Hell (Fae'd Up and Frustrated Book 1).
Good 1) World-building contained A LOT of clever ideas 2) Settings were fleshed out enough to visualize without interrupting the story 3) The vampire love interest was interesting
Neutral 1) Smut was fade to black
Mediocre 1) Plot-driven storyline was okay
Bad 1) Tone was frivolous and chaotic 2) Female lead was a shallow ditz with implausible moments of clever 3) 4) Romance-building was nonexistent
If the story's tone had been less silly and more deliberate, it would have been a lot better read.
DNF 32%. I can't with this book. I hate the heroine. I hate all the characters to be honest. She was arrested and all she cares about are her looks? How many times does this book have to mention that she smells after hours being in a cell? Why does this matter? And the obsession with vamps, but not letting them get to close (as in, oh no he's in touching distance, I'm gonna hurt him!)? I don't understand it. That's not how her powers work anyway. And seriously? She's a paralegal but doesn't know to ask for a lawyer or about her rights? How does that make sense? And Bennett. He broke her heart, but her family and friends just invite him in and are just cool with it? He's the prosecutor! This makes no sense.
A great start to a tongue in cheek, easy light cozy that I would also qualify as Chick Lit. Fun characters that have over the top reactions but which make reading this a fun experience. Okay the actual mystery isn't really that great, it could have been tighter but regardless it's well worth a read and a chuckle. Who hasn't experienced at least one really embarrassing dating moment? After seeing her ex (who run as far as possible from her 2 years ago), she thinks things couldn't get any worse. Surprise! They do after she wakes up in a dungeon accused of killing the town resident vampire mean girl. All she can remember is going to the meeting for the election updates on her "friends" council aspirations. Now she is faced with tracking down the killer, worse she has to work with her ex as he is the detective in charge of the investigation. Suspects are coming out of the woodwork but who had the strongest motive? Fear for her own safety grows - she's only a half pixie, half fae with no real power whilst most of the suspects are either shifters or vampires. Although what most vampires don't know is that her blood turns then human and she's not going to tell them! Can the killer be stopped? Are they coming after her? How will her working with her ex end?
1. The description says "If you like Jim Butcher & Patricia Briggs" & this book is not at all like those.
2. The main character has a panic over coming close to touching a vampire (not for the reason you think) which is ridiculous. And then she later holds onto a vampire's arm because it's covered in a leather jacket? Come on.
3. The main character cares more about how she looks/smells than about being in jail.
But I figured I've give the book a few more chapters just in case. Glad I did. It ended up being a bubbly cozy mystery wrapped up in a fantasy world. It also has some funny bits. That's how it should be sold because it would attract the right audience.
It's like mind candy...a fun, easy read. I think I'll try the next book which I think will likely be better as the author gets more into the series.
I wasn't going to read this book, in fact when I turned on my kindle today I merely misclicked the book when I was attempting to change pages because none of the books on page 1 looked tempting. I don't know about this cover but I simply DO NOT like it.
But once it was accidentally opened, I decided to give it a few pages to see if I'd like it or not. And thus my evening started, I read all three books (currently released) in one sitting. I should have gone to bed ages ago but here I am. Burning. Needing. Frustrated. I need more. I need so much more.
These books where hilarious and well paced, at one point I was laughing belly laughs in my bed. The tension. The romance. The mystery. I loved it.
This was a fun, fun read - quick paced with detailed and unique world building. There is a brief scene with a lamb at a dragon shifter's house that while a little gruesome is also such a funny and practical detail that I can't forget it. The humor and over the top zaniness won't be for everyone. Even I found Lyon to be an immature whiner some of the time. But mostly this was very enjoyable and well written. If you've ever read Robyn Peterman, this series is along the same lines without so much cursing and sex. I have already read the current books in this series and will be checking out other books Ann Denton has written.
I am truly confused as to why this book doesn't have MORE reviews. Travesty. Truly, it is. The Author's character Miss Lyon Fox was snarky, feisty and clumsy too. Who can possibly imagine a better character. Ly-Ly (that's Miss Lyon Fox to those NOT in the KNOW.) was slayin it and takin names like she did not give a friggidy frigg frig if there were any haters in Lyon Fox land. If she was real I would share my coffee with her, since she is not I will have to console myself by reading the entire series. Enjoy!! #rccardenas
Eep! I'm on a roll with this author, total binge mode and I've now read 3 different genres and have loved every single book so far. Lyon aka Ly-Ly is the crazy funny main character in this book and she finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. It was great! The chemistry between the characters is fabulous and I am enjoying every step of the adventures she takes me on. This book is very much like a paranormal cozy mystery but with the urban twist and is definitely recommend it.
Lyon Fox and her bestie JR are hilarious magical gals that incite uproarious gales of laughter (they did from me at least). Lyon is a charming fae klutz that just can’t catch a break and is in the absolute wrong place at the absolute wrong time and accused of a murder that she didn’t commit.
Much klutziness ensues and a couple of Prince Charmings as well or perhaps prince devils? In disguise - hard to tell when one is hot and one is reallly hot but both have questionable motives. Much entertainment, a lot of laughter and a seriously surprise ending and a devilishly evil villain - never ever saw that coming!
Hilarious, entertaining novel and an absolutely worthwhile read
Funny!! Her curse words are creative and the characters are awesome I want a bestie like this girl has lol and Ben hello who does that he lurvs her yay hot vamp is kinda great too oh crazy ex is scary as it gets her powers are hilarious and yes run on sentence is my game today ladies and gentlemen because I can and I hate stopping to think about punctuation haha oh and P.S. I hate cheaters so that's just sad.... see I don't give much away just vague and makes you scratch your head huh read the book it's awesome
I just love a snarky female character and Lyon Fox has snark for days. I just recently stumbled across this author as a recommendation for her book Knight Fall. I enjoyed that book so much that I went looking for any other books she's published which brought me to this series. I would definitely recommend this book I can't wait to start book 2 and see what kinds of trouble Lyon gets into next.
This book is so incredibly funny. And intriguing and just amazing. I love Ly Ly, seriously, I think it’s impossible not to love her. I love the character developments in this one, the plot is on point and I can’t wait to read more about her. Which is what I’m about to do right now xD. And if you make it to the end there’s still the little note written by her which is just too much for words. If you’re looking for a fun prn read.. this should def be it.
A funny, laugh out loud read which I enjoyed. The main character is a witty, sarcastic and chaotic wingless part fairy. It was fun being in her head and watching her try to clear her name alongside various other characters including her dragon shifter ex and a vampire she has the hots for but can't touch (you need to read to find out why). I really enjoyed this book as a light and fun read and am ready to dive right into the second book now.
This highly amusing narrative has a very clever storyline, a young lady that is part Fae mixed with human that has been cursed by her mother so she can't use obscene language, however, the humor comes into play because she is very talented at finding outlandish substitutes for her profanity. This refreshing story also engrosses its readers in a truly puzzling mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed this narrative and its very likable characters. Great Read!!!!!
This was the best urban fiction book I've read in quite some time. There's more light hearted humour than normally found in this genre. The story is set in a Magical California town with lots of mythical characters. The series feels more like a mixture of fantasy and cozy genres which made for an excellent read. I'm excited to read the next book in the series and I'll be reading more from Ann Denton.
A fun, pacy, entertaining and funny urban fantasy set in a magical town hidden within our own world. Lyon finds herself on the wrong side of the law and has to work hard with others to clear her own name. Low on the magical power scale, and no idea of how to do an investigation other than her intuition and sometimes slightly off internal radar she manages. I was less enamoured by the suggestion of a love triangle, but it was a fun read.
I read this first book in a couple hours...then the second....then the third, and I was so sad when there wasn't a fourth book! It's funny, easy to get into, and the characters are great. I'm very hopeful that more books in this series will be released soon. Highly recommend!
This book shows up as "Sucking Hell" by Anna Dare in my Kindle, but links to this Goodreads, which seems to be accurate. I'm not sure what the deal with that is, but it potentially makes it hard to find.
I thought it was a great, fun little murder mystery. It doesn't take itself too seriously and the main character is kind of silly/funny.
Fantastic characters and story. Actual surprise ending for me. But the biggest surprise was the fade to black romance scene. I could literally have smashed my phone to bits when it happened. Otherwise, really funny and really good read. But still, how dare you. Tabby would totally curse you for this.
Lyon is hilarious and relatable. You want her to be your bestie. By the end of the book you may second guess bestie but you still love her and her friends.
This book is funny. Lyon is witty and accident prone. Bennett is alpha swoon worthy and Luke is the bad boy you want to tame. Add in a mixed mystery and this book is golden. Give it a shot
A lighthearted murder mystery with humour, embarrassment and a whole heap of various supernatural creatures. Lyon is pretty much no filter, plenty of nonsense. Nice start to a new series. This one is pretty much a subtle love triangle. Fast paced chaos. It was great.
This book was exactly what I was looking for right now! A cozy mystery with a sense of humour and a touch of romance. Easy to read and left me wanting more!
DNF @ 89%. It was the usual clean paranormal silly romance. I love the author and thought it would have her usual steaminess under her other name but no. It was good. The climax is over and I don’t care about the other stuff lol. I know who did the murdering, case closed lol
This book was a light, fun read. The main character is a quirky and special woman/fae who decides that she needs to investigate when she is falsely accused of murder
