Misfit Squadron #3

A Misfit Midwinter

Rate this book
The events in this short book take place immediately after “The Russian Resistance”.

With the weather in the Arctic Circle rendering flying and fighting impossible, the Misfits leave Muscovy and head home, looking forward to a quiet Midwinter. The Prussians, however, have other ideas.

From a very young age, Simon Brading was in no doubt that he wanted to be a writer. Life got in the way a bit, though, and it was thirty years before he sat down and put pen to paper.
Less than a decade later he has more than twenty books published in various genres of fiction (sci-fi, steampunk, time travel, ballet...) and has no intention of being slowed down by anything except his son's demands on his time.

description

"Kitty stopped when she saw Gwen’s pallor and wrapped an arm around her. ‘Come on, let’s get you below.’"

Gwen just survived the events from book 2, which left her shattered and exhausted.

She's not quite sure how to deal or continue but luckily she has Kitty on her side.

Kitty, the American girl who picked Gwen up when she was in her darkest, has made her feelings clear on many occasion, and Gwen has finally reciprocated.

But now that the adrenaline from the flying and the war has calmed down, how will Gwen come to terms with her latest realizations of herself?

‘It will help you to see that we’re just normal people and that there’s nothing shameful in loving who you love.’

One thing's for certain, this is one winter Gwen will never forget.

Ahhh. This was what we needed for this series.

The previous two books were heavy on plot development and action, and while Gwen and Kitty's relationship was a thing, it was frequently overpowered by the various war-related events.

A Misfit Midwinter did a fabulous job of taking that relationship and bringing it to the forefront of the story.

I finally was able to see Gwen and Kitty "click" on screen for more than a few pages and the relationship development felt real to me.

I also really enjoyed just watching all of the Misfit characters kick back and enjoy themselves.

After the events from the first two books, I really felt like they deserved the rest and relaxation (and it was fun to see how they all went about their lives without the threat of war looming over them).

All in all, this was a great diversion and I'm eager (and excited) to delve back into the main story!

Thoughts: A sweet novella perfect for the winter holidays about the Misfit Squadron. The Misfits are on leave for Midwinter (Christmas), which they are in need after their last adventure. Of course this is the Misfits so nothing goes accordingly to plan. This was more aimed at the insight of the characters' and a little bit more of their development throughout the series so far and what we might expect from them going forward.
