Lucy Haskell is returning home to Denver after four years of living abroad in China. She's eager to see everything that has changed in her absence and to start the next chapter of her life. When her dear friend and traveling companion Delphine Collins goes missing without a trace in Chinatown, Lucy realizes she's in a unique position to help, and she decides to apply to become a Pinkerton agent.
Jed Green isn't sure what he thinks about ladies joining the agency. He knows from personal experience that it's dangerous work, and he can't imagine putting a woman in those kinds of situations. When he's asked to train a new female agent, he agrees reluctantly, but when he's asked to marry her for propriety's sake? That's another thing altogether - a preposterous thing.
Before Jed and Lucy can concentrate on their case, they must discover if they can work together. Then they must resolve their new feelings so they can work on the case.
An Agent for Lucy is book one of an exciting new series featuring Pinkerton agents and their brides. Be sure to grab every one of them!
Amelia C. Adams is a wife, a mother, and a novelist. She spends her days dreaming up stories and her nights writing them down. Her biggest hero is her husband, and you might just see bits and pieces of him as you read her novels.
She loves all things historical and enjoys learning about days gone by, but she's glad she was born more recently (she won't say how recently or not recently) because the Internet is awesome, and she's glad she doesn't have to wash her clothes by hand in a galvanized tub. She has hit Amazon bestseller status twice, once for A Clean Slate and once for A Clear Hope.
This is a wonderful story and I was so excited to read this first book in this new series. I was thrilled and well into reading this story. It is so good and if I had it all in one piece I don’t think I would have put it down. I am a beta reader and was given so many chapters at a time to read and look for anything that was off. Amelia is very good at editing before handing these chapters out. So I was able to pretty much just read while keeping my eye out for anything I needed to bring to Amelia’s attention. This story was amazing and I was so thrilled to read it and enjoy it and find out things the Pinkerton’s do. This was such a fun and thrilling story to read and of course there was romance involved as and well mystery. Do they finish their task on their first case together and do they keep married at the end as the agents and female trainers have to marry in order to maintain propriety and they can annual the marriage once they are trained? To do they stay married, fall in love, catch the bad people or find their missing person they have been tasked to do? You will need to read this story to find it all out and believe me it is so worth the read.
As you know already I received this as a beta reader by the author, and due to all guidelines have received no compensation for doing so.
Lucy has spent the last four years in China with her father, a merchant, and his partner and his wife. Now, she just wants to take things easy for a while. However, when Mrs. Collins goes missing she knows she needs to help locate her somehow. Jed is a Pinkerton agent who has been assigned to find a missing husband. He does find him but gets his arm broken by a couple of thugs in the process. He stays on the case and is able to help take down an opium den. When the Pinkertons decide to hire women as agents, Lucy applies and is assigned to marry Jed. They are dispatched to San Francisco to try and locate Mrs. Collins due to Lucy's fluency in Cantonese. Will they be able to find Mrs. Collins in the swarming mess of Chinatown and will they decide to stay married after the case is over? Sit back and enjoy An Agent for Lucy.
This is the first book in a series about women who become agents for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Since the Agency has been male dominated in a potentially dangerous profession the addition of women agents was a difficult transition. The answer was to wed the new women detectives to their training agent. I was intrigued by the premise of being married for your job. Each female agent was assigned a husband and a case. At the end of the case, the marriage could be annulled or continued and consimated. An Agent for Lucy is a wonderful story of the pairing of two agents! The characters are fully developed and relatable. This book is page turner! I highly recommend An Agent for Lucy!
Oh man, when I read the prequel to this new series I really loved it and I couldn't wait to be able to read the rest of the books in this series! And now that I've started the first book, which I loved, loved, loved reading I can't wait to read all this series because this book has me hooked wanting to find out if all the couples that where matched and married will have their HEA like Lucy and Jed did! And I can't wait to find out if they make an appearance in the other books, so I can see if they have kids and if they have stayed on as Pinkerton Agents!
I liked this story. The characters were interesting. It is a love story, but well-balanced with intrigue and adventure. The plot was much more than two people falling in love. I liked the take on addiction, and the compassionate way Lucy treated her friend. Good, clean read. 4 1/2 stars.
This was a great start to the series for the individual agents and I look forward to reading the remaining books. The characters were relatable and the book was easy to follow. Hopefully we will hear more about these two later on.
An Agent for Lucy isn't as long as I thought, but the story was well-written, and it got my attention from the beginning. I'm a big fan of anything about the Pinkertons, and this one didn't disappoint.
The way Lucy and Jed approach their case is quite professional, but not without the romantic sparks that they set aside. As Pinkerton agents, their case takes priority. I really liked the characters. Their determination not to give up is admirable. The story is exciting, and it tackles a sensitive subject that is handled well. The ending wrapped everything up nicely. I'm eager to read the next installment in the series. Highly recommended.
Very cute story. Really like both the h and he. She was a strong and intelligent character who more than complimented the capable and compassionate male lead. Interesting twist on the Pinkerton theme.... I wonder if they had to enforce in real life considering the times.???
An Agent for Lucy is the first Amelia Adams book I’ve read, and I enjoyed it a lot. Despite the shorter length of the novel, the plot and characters are fully developed. Jed is a swoonworthy hero, and I love his strength of character and integrity. He also has a great sense of humor, yet takes his job seriously. I like that he takes care of Lucy during the mission without making her feel useless or unnecessary to the assignment. He recognizes that she brings several important skills to the job. I appreciated all the historic information, especially about one particular topic that I won’t mention because it would be a spoiler. I will definitely read more books by this author.
Amelia Adams kicks off this new series with her typical flair! I loved the feisty Lucy, who was equally adept at serving tea or breaking the bad guy's nose. Loved the rollicking cake fight, Lucy's concern for her friend and her flawless Chinese. I predict The Pinkerton Matchmaker will be another hit series!
Fantastic! What a great story. I loved how both agents worked together and worked to solve the case. The little cross over here and there was great. Looking forward to more books in the unique series.
I loved this book . Lucy's friend Mrs. Collin disappears in San Francisco. Lucy decided to be a Pinkerton agent to help find only to find out she must marry her agent trainer. This is an exciting adventure and you'll love reading it.
I have read a number of books by Amelia C Adams and they do not disappoint. With strong characters,a dash of delicious dialogue that actually had me laughing out loud I think you will enjoy it. 💜
Having read the introductory novel, I moved right on to the first installment. Amelia Adams is a “go-to” author for me and doesn’t disappoint this time. Mystery, humor, and falling in love.
This is going to be a great series!! Thank you Amelia C. Adams for giving us a story with some fun, intrigue and love. Lucy and Jen were perfect for each other
Super book. Pinkerton detectives, mystery, old west, what can I say. Well written and I was hooked from the beginning. Add women Pinkerton detectives and you have it all. Highly recommend!!!!!
This is the first of the Pinkerton matches. He'd and Lucy bypass all the trials of courting and slowly falling in love and hip right in to a marriage of convenience when her good friend turns up missing. Together they dig through San Francisco's Chinatown in search of an opium den where they she may be hidden. Their mission is a success, the list is found, and a decision must be made. Do they apply for an annulment, or has the idea of a real marriage become a possibility?
Lucy answers the Agency's call for female agents because she already has a case that she wants to work on, and she wants to be a part of solving the case - the only way to do that is to become an agent. She's quite surprised at the marriage clause of getting the job, but doesn't hesitate because she wants to find her friend. She is paired up with Jed Green, someone she had met before and been interested in. Marrying him was not going to be a problem! Their case takes them into the opium dens of Chinatown.
After four years in China, Lucy Haskell returns home to Denver seeking a new life. She soon learns her friend Delphine Collins became missing in Chinatown and seeks a job with the Pinkerton Agency, since she has experience with the Chinese. She will be partnered with Jed Green who is reluctant to work with a woman on a dangerous job. But he wasn't prepared to have to marry Lucy in order to work the case. A great story which takes place in the late 1800s. I could not put down the story as it's very compelling.
A fantastic first book in the series, Lucy and Jed have great chemistry, even with a bumpy start! I really liked that we got to know all the characters, even before anyone went missing, the relationship that Lucy has with her father is also very sweet and heartwarming. Jed was against female agents but Lucy quickly wins him over with her knowledge, language skills and ingenuity but can he win her heart in return? I read this on Kindle Unlimited and look forward to many more too.
This was a great way to start the Pinkerton series. I love how the books in this series are light and fast reads. You get to enjoy a clean romance topped with action, suspence and detective work.
If you're starting with this series, I highly suggest you read the 0,5 book first. It tells you basically how it all started, so you get a better understanding of the whole deal and you get to meet the first characters in the series. I've read quite a few books in the series and I believe each book can be read as a stand alone don't forget the 0,5 book first) and I also believe they don't need to be read in order (I'm skipping a few and then I go back and forth, depending on what my mood want's to read and who I would like to meet).
This story follows Lucy as she returns to Denver after four years in China, only to learn that her friend Mrs. Collins has mysteriously disappeared in California. Determined to find answers, Lucy becomes a female Pinkerton agent. The role comes with a partner—and a marriage of convenience for protection. Jed wasn’t originally thrilled about women joining the agency, however he is pleasantly surprised the woman he just recently met will now be his partner and wife. They travel to Chinatown to investigate the case and try to find Lucy’s friend.
While each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone and they are not required to be read in order; they do each have the same origin story and it appears that they have not employed a continuity reader to ensure that the origin of each book are the same. There are small but quite noticeable differences in each of the books I've read so far. They don't detract from the overall story but I do find them distracting.
I have read many of Amelia's books and this did not disappoint. The Pinkertons is a great storyline with so many possibilities. Loved learning the history of the first female Pinkerton agent, Kate Warne, who helped thwart a real -life assassination plot against President Lincoln. And loved the plot of this story, which led into the opium dens in China Town in San Francisco. I love great stories with romance intertwined and Amelia's stories all love up to that!
This starts out kind of slow but it gives you onsite to the story once it takes off. What a brilliant idea to incorporate opium in the story something that was so popular but “ hush hush” in that day very well written.
And I can recommend this to my advanced reading preteen friends as there is no language or sexual references although it does talk about smoking opium that younger readers might have questions about.
Lucy Haskell returns home to Denver after four years of living in China. Her friend, Delphine Collins goes missing without a trace in Chinatown. Lucy becomes a Pinkerton agent. Jed Green doesn't like ladies joining the agency. After all, it's dangerous work. He reluctantly trains them. Can Jed and Lucy work together?
This story flowed smoothly. I loved it. Tension with relationships and with antagonists. This series, I will pursue. On to the next one.
This is a clean romance. I really like how the author had Jed and Lucy meet before she went to the Pinkerton agency to become an agent. She is intelligent and funny. Jed is serious and yet witty. But what really brings the two together is their desire to help others. Watching them do this on their first case is a lot of fun. Looking forward to reading the second book.
