Uncanny Badassery!!

I received an ARC in exhange for an honest review and, again, I was left in shock and awe over the combined imaginative powers of David Bussell and M.V. Stott. 5+ stars!!!!!

The book starts with a great huge bang and the action never lets up, staying strong to the end as Erin races the clock to beat the baddie at his game and save her cousin. The Labours of Hercules have nothing on the hoops Erin jumps through, adding to the prevalent sense of drama and expectation woven throughout this series, but especially present in this book. This is high octane Uncanny; irreverent and macabre, yet full of heart (Erin style) and dark humour.

This is a tale that will stay with you long after you've finished it, and I can't recommend it enough!!

Erin is out for more blood than usual because this time, it really is personal

Poor Erin. She barely has time to draw breath between one book and the next. In this book, her cousin Lana, the only family she has left, is kidnapped and she is sent all over Brighton, trying to find clues while attempting to keep her temper in check. Worrying about someone else does not comes naturally to her anymore so fearing for Lana makes everything she is put through by the insidious kidnapper that much harder to deal with.
These two brilliant authors have written a series with a 'heroine' that on paper should be the one we are booing but their skill in telling us her life and showing us her character (complete with her many, many flaws) makes us actually root for her, against all the odds. She jumps off the page, fist clenched, ready for anything. She doesn't give up and she doesn't let go. Erin is definitely the most unlikeable of all their lead characters but I love her, just like I do all the rest.
We meet characters that have appeared in the first three books and it is good to catch up with most of them, not so much the kidnapper who makes my skin crawl. Cupid is his usual smelly self and Parker is all-seeing, as usual.
This series does include several cross-over characters from the rest of the other series but can be read alone, though I suggest that you read them all if you enjoy this series because they are all written in the same funny, frightening, warped, exciting vein. I am so pleased that I found David and Matt's Uncanny Kingdom to escape into.

Erin Banks is back in David Bussell and M.V. Stott’s Bad Intention: An Uncanny Kingdom Urban Fantasy (Uncanny Ink Book 4) and that’s a very wonderful thing indeed. I used to have what I called my “Dresden test” for lead characters in urban fantasy books like this, looking to see how the lead character stacks up against Jim Butler’s Harry Dresden. That test is worthless now as Erin blows poor Harry away. Sharez Jek, the merciless zero humanity psychopath who kidnapped Erin’s Lana May think he has all the cards, but I’d never count our Erin out. The result for we readers is one more perfectly written thriller of a story. Lucky for all who have been following along - and for newcomers too as this book does work as a stand-alone (even though I strongly urge starting at book 1 for maximum enjoyment). But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to Bad Thoughts, the next book in this series.

I was an ARC reader. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Erin Banks is back for another assassination - another successful job, another big paycheck. She visited her cousin, Lana, to celebrate by getting wasted. The next morning, Lana was gone, kidnapped while Erin was out cold. One of her old enemies did it to hurt her. Lana is the only person Erin calls family. Can she rescue her before irreversible harm is done (to Lana and herself)? It's a brutal, vicious, violent game the kidnapper is playing with Erin, using Lana as bait. Lots of outrageous descriptions and similes to enliven the prose, evil monsters (human and Uncanny) galore, non-stop action up to the thrilling conclusion. A great read, I couldn't put it down until I finished. I recommend the previous Uncanny Ink books: Bad Soul Book 1, Bad Blood Book 2 and Bad Justice Book 3. They give important background on Erin and her allies/associates/lover (she doesn't seem to have any friends except Lana).

Not much progress

Wow, it stopped at 83% this time! Good on you.

Erin being all scary and hard kinda reminds me a lot of Anita Blake, but there's a softness missing that makes Erin harder to enjoy. It's book four and there's no progress on her finding her brother, no progress on her character. The only progress is getting evidence that Kirky Boy isn't as hopeless as we thought. He wasn't even in here most of the time.

I think it's because it's so short that the lack of softness really shows the imbalance for me. But if this book is supposed to be nothing but hard edges, then it isn't something I'd do again after finishing the series. It's otherwise super creepy and I can't emphasize enough on the messed up parts.

Sharez Jek is back and he's gonna make Erin suffer. He's not your common or garden psychopath and definitely doesn't plays by the rules, he likes to cut to the heart of his victims.
There is only one person who links her to a normal life, her cousin Lana May. Jek kidnaps Lara and sends Erin on a madcap chase following his clues - if she fails to meet his deadlines, Lana dies.
"Bad Intention", the fourth in the series, is not as strong as the earlier books but I liked it nonetheless.
I'm squeamish when it comes to horror but, for some reason, even the goriest parts (and there are many) didn't give me the heebie jeepies. Erin's snarky nature keeps the series from being too overwhelming.
3.5 Stars, raised to 4 Stars.

She eats a fairy! Not on purpose and not recommended btw. it's because she's got two vengeful enemies after her at the same time, results of previous jobs improperly completed, a loved one is taken hostage, and she finds herself in an extremely shitty position that practically forces it down her throat.
And it's going to take allies, a thing she didn't realize she needed, to get out of this pickle, whether they are alive and horny, dead, fey or just a bunch of chavs. Erin is not going to break even on this one but she does find herself doing the right thing for a change.

I absolutely LOVE this series! I was laughing out loud several times. Snarky, tough female lead with a couple of soft spots makes for an awesome reading experience!

Edge of your seat tension, non stop action, the fights just kept coming page after page until the last page and the night were done.

I don't get why people keep getting kidnapped and the MC always feels like she has to comply with the kidnappers demands. Just doesn't compute.
