I’ve been working on reading through the Bible in a year, today I finished the Book of Colossians and Philemon.
The book of Colossians was written by Paul to the Colossians to encourage them in address concerns brought up in their church by Epaphras (the Church leader) and to challenge them to a greater devotion to Jesus. Paul finds himself very encouraged as he is persecuted because this is his opportunity to share in the suffering of Christ. Paul expresses how giving into the extreme following of the Torah because Jesus fulfilled the Law, likewise, he expresses how they do not need to give into polytheism because Jesus has triumph over them. To embrace them is to not understand Jesus’ purpose. This book invites us to recognize that there is no part of the human experience that is not touched by Jesus. It invites the readers to examine their lives to be completely in line with Jesus. A great book altogether.
The book of Philemon was a letter written by Paul to Philemon from the church of Philemon. Paul finds himself in a difficult situation where Onesimus (the ex-slave of Philemon) and Philemon had some sort of falling out, and Paul address Philemon to embrace Onesimus once again but this time, as a brother. The request Paul asks of Philemon is incredibly counter cultural. Onesimus wronged Philemon and Philemon has every right by Roman culture to have Onesimus punished. Paul requests that Onesimus is embraced as a brother and that anything he owes Philemon should be charged to Paul. Paul gives great emphasis that we are all equals before God. Paul demonstrates the meaning of the cross through his actions. Altogether, this book is incredibly personal and incredibly convicting. It shows Paul’s understanding of the Gospel and challenges the reader to see themselves as equals before God invited to loving through sacrifice and forgiveness as Jesus did.

This little scripture journal of Colossians was wonderful for bible study! This Illuminated journal is beautifully done, with more illustration of verses inside. They come in differently decorated or not decorated styles.

I used his book with the James Method in a online group study. I could write notes on each page, one for scripture, one with dot grid lines. It was very handy to have an individual copy of Colossians kept together with the entire study within a binder.

I do have slight issues with how ESV seems to choose the wording that does not have the same impact as my other versions. Doing this study, I read Colossians out of the NKJV, AMP, Phillips and NIV and that is when I noticed this. Or perhaps I just have a stronger preference for another version?

Quotes from commentaries, personal observations, sermon notes. Plenty of room for all of these here.
