The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has the same mission as the NYPD and protect the public, investigate crimes, and arrest lawbreakers. The difference is Sheriff Maggie Doane has six deputized officers to patrol hundreds of square miles of remote Nevada mountains and deserts. After dodging a close attempt on her own life, finding the bad guy takes all her willpower and attention, despite the distraction of a sick father and intrusions of old boyfriends. When one of the richest men in the state snaps his fingers, how will she respond? These and other challenges await in "A Sheriff in Nevada." "Sheriff Maggie Doane is a workaholic, and the fact that she has to keep an eye on her willfully incompetent team of deputies doesn't help matters. Her best deputy is her partner, a dog named Max. The department is underfunded and understaffed, and promising new hire Cheryl "Charlie" Stone arrives just in time to help solve a brutal murder. Set away from the bright lights of Las Vegas and in the fictional rural area of Jefferson County, this story has some surprising twists and characters you'll want to keep following." While I won't give an "official" review of this book by J.T. Hume (full disclosure: we're married!), I will say this is an enjoyable story with great characters in an interesting little town. A good read for anyone who likes a touch of mystery and relationship drama with an edge of darkness.
It seems that lately I've been aware I was reading, hyper checking my progress, how much is left in the chapter, and so on. This story made me feel present, like I was part of it. That was a welcome relief.
The Sheriff and her new deputy are take-no-prisoners type of women, and they police the small town in Nevada with grit. It almost had a western feel to it. I like to try to figure out who the murderer is in a mystery, and I had no idea until it was revealed.
I'll have to read the sequel to see what mischief Maggie finds.
What a great book! I simply could not put it down. There’s mystery and then again, there’s touches of tenderness in the community and on the workforce of the County Sheriff’s Office. That’s a wide spaced story-line! Sheriff Maggie Doane worked hard every day to get the work done and prove she could do it; her Poppo had been the former Sheriff and now ran a ranch nearby while helping her with paperwork; she was a local so knew the good and bad of the town; and, there was her first love that she never forgot. This book is the story of conflict as well as the men who did not want a woman Sheriff. I highly recommend this book and love that I found this author.
Enjoyable read A snapshot in time in rural Nevada during COVID. A well written and engaging read that starts out by getting to meet many of the characters and learn of the flaws of quite a few of them. This gives a realistic feel as it is set in a rural area with many dysfunctional citizens. I was not sure where this story was going at first, but then I really felt engaged and wanted to know what was going on and who was doing what. A multi layered plot that kept my attention to the end, but it is not the end of the story, it is a to be continued story. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.
I'm not entirely sure what it was that caught my attention in an early draft of this book but I was instantly hooked by the story. I wanted to read more. More about this strong Sheriff out in the middle of nowhere, more about the independent folks who know what community is all about, more about what makes this place tick. Definitely glad I could spend more time in this story and following along with Maggie as she works to discover what's going on in her small town all the while trying to keep the peace between it's citizens.
There is a new sheriff in Jefferson County, Nevada and her name is Maggie. It's a tiny rural county, and local attitudes don't favor a woman in the role. But Maggie earns their respect, dealing with difficult employees, poachers, trouble at the nearby secret Air Force installation, a mountain lion and a murder or two. Kudos to JT Hume for putting together a terrific story. 5 STARS.
I loved the setting, commiserated with the typical lack of funding for our protectors on the various police forces in rural areas, cheered for our hero, and enjoyed reading this book. Big plus: a satisfying ending!
Thanks for this!
P.S. I totally loved the Longmire books (and tv series), which this reminds me of.
Wasn't sure about this one, but I'm sure glad I got it. Maggie is not afraid to work and run her department. So much about this one to enjoy. Hope to see a book two soon.
This was a fun read. Some of it was a bit predictable, but that’s okay! There were also some false leads, and those made it really interesting. Tough to put down!
Maggie Doane is the overworked Sheriff of a small town in the middle-of-nowhere Nevada and the dead bodies are piling up. Lots of local color, vivid characters, and friction here, against a backdrop of brothels, casinos, ranches, and a military base that’s hiding something. JT Hume has us empathizing with his flawed, struggling characters. A good story, well-told.
