SO DARK…

After suffering unparalleled tragedy, Leah Middleton knows she’s fortunate to be taken in at her deceased mother’s ancestral home. But the disdain her family – The Knights of Red Ridge Hall – held for her free-spirited mother is transferred to Leah, and they revel in letting her know it. A proud and noble family, the Knights hold expectations Leah doesn’t believe she can meet, certainly not while staying true to her loving, system-defying parents, and especially when it comes to Dr Grayson Slade. He is as far from a desirable match as her family could imagine, and to make matters worse, she learns he holds secrets that can tear her newfound security from her tenuous grasp.

ONLY LOVE’S LIGHT CAN SHINE THROUGH

Doctor Grayson Slade is assistant to Dr Theodore Knight, founder of The Knight Society, a benevolent institution for unwanted and ill children. Grayson himself was rescued off the streets of London as a boy and he wants no more in life than what he has attained. Until the moment he lays eyes on Leah Middleton. But evil is flourishing, and he can only do so much to stop it. As mysteries begin to unravel, unthinkable truths are revealed and a malevolent threat closes in. Grayson knows he has no choice – he must do what’s right to keep Leah’s love.

OMG... What a story!!!! From the first page I was enthralled all the way until the end. This is a disturbing dark realistic story of magnanimous proportions. I don't want to spoil the book for you. There is sadness, snobbery, societal pressure, dark, dark secrets, sick abuse and murder. The H/h's romance comes secondary to the story told. This book's imagery is extremely powerful. It is like a movie for your mind. The suspense will kill you. I could not put this book down. I had my eyes wide open during certain parts of the book. I was surprised, shocked and horrified. This author knows how to write a suspenseful thriller and murder mystery. This is a must read that I highly recommend. What a wonderful story. As the first story I have read by this author, I can honestly say I truly enjoyed the characters and plot. It is definitely one of the better regency-historical-romance-mystery-paranormal novels I've read (is there even such a genre). There are a few things that I question about why it was included in the plot ** possible spoiler alert **
1) Was she really able to see the ghosts of her siblings? Why not her parents? If so, why the abrupt stop and why did Leah not question it?
2) Why include the letter from Nelson at the end at all? Really no need.
3) grandmother's hatred of Leah just didn't feel like it could really be all about spite and vanity. Felt like more complex earlier on in novel, like she may have known on some level about husband.

These are just some of the dangling, unresolved issues in the book, but they were by no means do grievous to keep from enjoying the book as a whole

Leah has moved in with her grandparents after her entire family died of cholera and she is out of her element as they are rich and snobs and expect her to be like them even though they hate her because she looks like her father. Grayson is a doctor who was taken off the streets with a couple of his friends and he was taught to be a doctor and be the protégé to the elder doctor but Theodore knight is not who he seems. Leah and Grey are in love with each other but are told they will not suit and then all hades breaks lose and secrets come out and there are deaths. Awesome book.

If you like edgy, ghostly, dark stories you will enjoy this story. It is a compelling story of a young woman who recently has lost her family to Cholera, and has been taken to live with her grandparents. As the story unfolds she meets and is instantly attracted to the one person her grandparents will not approve of. I did enjoy the story, but at times was overwhelmed by some of the twists and turns it took and the scenarios that played out.

Good vs Evil and all the in between

Jane is does not shy away from difficult topics or situations. She writes with beautiful conviction and creates characters you truly love and love to hate. Her books always create an immersive world that sucks you in and takes you on an emotional journey. This books is just another example of this. It’s definitely not a light “beach read,” but I enjoyed it very much.

A new author for me Jane Shoup has written a very good story. I love strong heroines and that is what Leah is and the author took you to a place so unexpected what a splendid thing to do. An author that creates an emotional connection that draws the reader in - always makes a story to be remembered. I will be on the lookout for additional works by this author. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

This is the first book by this Author that I have read I found it to be well written a story that holds your interest from the very first. What sick people the brothers where how could anyone do that? I would recommend this book, but be warned it might not be for everyone as there is some very dark content to it. Very Impressive, something different.

Wow I would have given this book a few more stars if I had them.
This is the first book I have read from this author and to say I was impressed would be putting it mildly. I will seek out more of her work to read.
I love historical fiction but not so keen on the paranormal. I don't usually give those books a second look. I'm very glad I gave this one a chance as it was not over the top. A well thought out and developed plot. There is romance, heartache, angst, mystery, incredibly bad characters and wonderfully good characters set in an intricate story. I got into this book from the first page and did not put it down till the last page. I enjoyed every minute of the time spent reading this book. I recommend this book for adult readers as this is a dark romance, though it is clean, it remains adult content.
