Laclau professzornak nem tetszettek azok a tanulmányok, amiket eddig írtak a populizmusról, úgyhogy írt egyet magának. Így megy ez. A szerző szerint az eddigi megközelítések mind a priori feltételezték a populizmus pejoratív jelentéstartalmát, ami nem csoda, hisz alkotóik abból indultak ki, hogy a populizmus „homályos és pontatlan”, ők viszont aligha tekintettek úgy magukra, mint homályos és pontatlan lényekre – tehát szegény populizmus már élből kapott egy rusnya nagy fekete pontot*. Ezzel szemben Laclau szerint a populizmus valóban homályos és pontatlan, de ez nem egy működési rendellenesség, hanem olyan alaptulajdonság, ami a tömeg heterogenitásából szükségszerűen következik, és önmagában morálisan semleges.
A szerző úgy igyekszik kiküszöbölni elődei tévedéseit, hogy nem a politika felől közelíti meg témáját, hanem alulról: igyekszik megtalálni a legelemibb alapegységet, amiből aztán fölépítheti elméletét. Ez az alapegység pedig az igény**. Igényekből egy társadalomban, mint az köztudott, kismilliom-egy létezik – ám ha ezek valamilyen ív mentén egymás mellé rendeződnek, létrehoznak egy átléphetetlen határvonalat***, aminek innenső oldalán a NÉP áll, másik oldalán pedig AZOK****. A barikádon innen álló NÉP magára mint totalitásra tekint, amiből a barikád másik oldalán állók ki vannak taszítva, ám puszta létezésüknél fogva mégis eleven cáfolatai ennek a képzelt totalitásnak – ami oda vezet, hogy a NÉP-nek valamilyen módon (verbálisan vagy tettel) el kell tüntetnie minden nyomát annak, hogy ők a "másikakkal" potenciálisan egy csoportot alkotnak/alkottak/alkothatnak. Ezen felül bejönnek még az egyenletbe mindenféle „üres jelölők”, vagyis olyan „jelszavak” – pl. „megvédjük a kisembert” –, amelyek egyfajta ernyőmetaforaként maguk alá gyűjtik a fenn említett igényeket. Szóba kerül továbbá a vezető (amúgy maga is potenciális „üres jelölő”), aki személyében garancia az igények teljesülésére, ugyanakkor (és ebben van a trükk!) maga is konstruál igényeket, ám azokat a NÉP igényeinek állítja be. No meg vannak itt még egyéb dolgok is amiket Laclau marha fontosnak tart, de én mégsem rabolnám itt az időtöket, úgyhogy ezeket kihagyom – és máris kész a friss, meleg populizmus.
Nagyon érdekfeszítő, ha nem is különösebben olvasmányos (finoman szólva) tanulmány ez, ami teljesen új perspektívából keresi a válaszokat erre a kérdésre. Mondjuk Laclau fejtegetéseiből következik, hogy a populizmus nem olyan dolog, ami ellen harcolni lehet – hisz hozzátartozik a politikához, ennél fogva kiirthatatlan –, így hát a könyv kortárs hatalomtechnikai fenyegetések kezelésére korlátozottan alkalmazható. Ugyanakkor segít, hogy ezeket a veszélyeket általánosabb keretek között, újszerűen lássuk – ergo közvetett segítséget mégiscsak képes nyújtani. Mindenesetre számomra a populizmus (talán illőbb volna ezentúl a demagógia kifejezést használni) továbbra is elsősorban egy adott hely és idő specifikus problémája marad, egyfajta politikai módszertan, amire választ kéne találni – egyszerűen könnyebb dolgozni ezzel a munkahipotézissel. De ettől függetlenül Laclau helyenként megvilágosító erejű, fontos szöveget alkotott, a tömeglélektan és a pszichoanalitikus politológia (már ha van egyáltalán ilyen) rajongóinak kötelezően ajánlott.
* Ez a szemlélet amúgy (mint Laclau szépen felvázolja) a francia forradalom értékelésében gyökeredzik, amiben a csőcselék kontrollálhatatlan pusztítása tűnt a legtöbb elemző számára a központi elemnek.
** És mivel az igény testvéröccse a vágy, ez lehetőséget teremt Laclaunak, hogy a pszichoanalízist, Freudot és Lacant is játékba hozza.

His name looks suspiciously like Lacan, and he spends entirely too much time flapping his gums about such things as 'floating signifiers' and 'discursive formations.'
However, this actually turned out to be a book after my own heart. A cerebral defense of populism against its elitist detractors. As everyone who knows me will agree, comrade David is nothing if not a man of the people.
I'm of the opinion that Trump really is as grotesque as all that, and that his impending presidency is likely to be an unmitigated disaster on several fronts; however - and here perhaps I risk incoherence - I also think it may be possible to find seeds of emancipation in the new social imaginary of Trumpism. A blow against elite consensus, a ferocious return to politics against the reign of administrative social engineering. These new energies just somehow need to be harnessed and redirected to the creation of a more just society.

Only in an impossible world in which politics would have been entirely replaced by administration, in which piecemeal engineering in dealing with particularized differences would have totally done away with antagonistic dichotomies, would we find that 'imprecision' and 'simplification' would have been eradicated from the public sphere. In that case, however, the trademark of populism would be just the special emphasis on a political logic which, as such, is a necessary ingredient of politics tout court. - pp 18
To assert something beyond any proof could be a first stage in the emergence of a truth which can be affirmed only by breaking with the coherence of the existing discourses. - pp 27

This has taken me a while but the last hundred pages suddenly took on a new truth and urgency. I learned a couple of key things here, one of which was a way of understanding how Brexit and (to a lesser extent) UKIP and Jeremy Corbyn's accession could take place. The other was that Laclau really, really doesn't like Slavoj Zizek...

Prefiero primero intentar poner por escrito lo que aprendí, o lo que entendí que este muchacho quiso decirnos.
Al empezar el libro me llamaba la atención que una persona quisiera hacer una defensa del populismo, tan asociado tengo el término populismo a su forma peyorativa. Digo, Cristina Kirchner no suele hablar de su gobierno como un “gobierno populista” aunque eso esté en el transfondo y todo el mundo sepa que se trata de un gobierno populista. Debe ser piantavotos hablar de populismo, me imagino.
Antes de empezar el libro pensaba que sabía a qué se refería Laclau con eso de “significantes vacíos”. A medida que fui leyendo dejé de entender de que hablaba, y ahora creo que lo que pensaba antes estaba bastante bien, pero alguna refinación del concepto hice.
Entiendo que el tipo no solo defiende el populismo, sino que aveces está cerca de defender el fascismo directamente. En este sentido una discusión que está latente y me parece que no se termina de dar del todo en el libro es la cuestión de la democracia, y que significa un gobierno del pueblo. Obviamente no alcanza con votar, uno podría tener un gobierno elegido “democráticamente” pero sin “apoyo popular” porque lo fue perdiendo con el tiempo. De la misma forma uno podría tener un gobierno de facto con amplio respaldo popular. También está toda la cuestión de que más allá del voto hay fuerzas que determinan el devenir de lo político. En los próximos meses los Argentinos vamos a tener que elegir un presidente entre Scioli, Macri y Masa. Parece una opción bastante limitada, pero podemos elegir solo entre ellos, no se sabe bien porque, otro ya hizo las elecciones importantes por nosotros. A propósito aprovecho para recordar mi recomendación de que la cámara de diputados sea elegida totalmente al azar entre los electores, y que los menores de 16 ejerzan un voto a través de su padre/madre/tutor o encargado.
Me volvió a pasar la cuestión que comenté en otro momento sobre los escritores (llamémosles muy ampliamente) “marxistas”: pareciera que aportan más categorías que ideas. Y muchas son discusiones entre categorías en un mundillo que entienden ellos solos. No lo crítico, me parece que hay cosas importantes detrás de la precisión en los términos de Ranciere, Negri, Zizek, Laclau, pero a mí no me interesa tanto eso, creo que tengo tantas cosas que aprender antes. Esas discusiones me aburrieron un poco. Y fuera de eso el libro se reduce a: la gente quiere cosas distintas, pero existe la posibilidad de que venga alguien que logre hacerse pasar por el reivindicador de todas esas causas, y convertirse en el líder de todos. Obvio que no tiene el mismo nivel de precisión, pero lo mal que mal lo dije sin decir: “objeto a”, “hegemonía”, “significante vacío”, “significante flotante”, “cadena equivalencial”, “pueblo”, etc. Ni citar a Hegel, Lacan, Freud, Marx, Schmitt, Sassure (requiriendo lectura previa). Si lo que hace bueno al trabajo es la capacidad de formular semejante pavada en términos tan específicos, y bien documentados… prefiero una buena idea mal expresada. En ese sentido más que agregar libros que quiero leer a medida que iba leyendo este, agregué libros que no voy a leer pero que Laclau discute.
Me gustó, me dejó con ganas de seguir leyendo sobre política internacional. Me gustaría saber más. Qué vergüenza no tener un mapa en la cabeza de como fue el proceso político brasielero desde la independencia hasta Dilma, tengo muchos baches. Ni que hablar de otros países.

A populizmus fogalmát általában negatív jelzőként szokták használni, én legalábbis így találkoztam vele korábban. Az elitellenes demagógiát kimaxoló, olcsó népszerűséget hajhászó, bármit megígérő és így felelőtlenül politizáló önjelölt népvezérek leírásáról lenne szó (lásd Trump twitterezési szokásait). Ez a könyv azonban újraértelmezi a fogalmat és azt állítja, hogy minden jó politikus egy kicsit populista. A politikusok feladata ugyanis, hogy a megfelelő retorikával, narratívával a társadalom nagyon különböző érdekű, akár egymással szembenálló csoportjait is egy táborba tudják kovácsolni (először szimbolikusan, aztán meg a szavazófülkében), amit aztán illethetnek a „nép” elnevezéssel és szembeállíthatnak az „elittel”. Ha elég jól csinálják, akkor elegendő ember fogja magát ehhez a nép-fogalomhoz sorolni ahhoz, hogy az adott párt szilárd és kiterjedt szavazóbázissal rendelkezzen és választást nyerjen. A könyv szerint tehát baloldali populizmus éppúgy létezik, mint jobboldali – és ez nem feltétlenül negatív jelenség, sőt a demokrácia alapja. A fogalom így viszont talán túl tág értelmű; ha például a hazai politikai táborokat figyelem, kevés olyan politikust látok, aki nem érvel valamennyire populista módon. Ennek ellenére a politika iránt érdeklődőknek fontos olvasmány, mert a politizálás logikájába alapos betekintést nyerhetnek vele.

This book is a slow slog but ultimately worthwhile and deeply thoughtful. Globalized capitalism: it is tearing us apart and tearing itself apart. What do we do now? We don't know. But Laclau offers us both historical references and theoretical tools to help us move toward answers. The radical democratic movement that is populism can work towards totalitarian oppression but perhaps it can lead towards freedom as well. Which will happen depends on the political actions we take.

What an exceptionally well written book.
Laclau's premises and conclusions aren't theoretically challenging as such and could be summarized in a few pages. But he does such a great job at elucidating his own terminology and building his main arguments point by point, drawing from other work in political theory around the notion of populism, as well as fields like semiotics and psychoanalysis (and I give him credit especially for this considering how skeptical I am of psychoanalytic theory in general).
It's also quite excellent that he always exemplifies his points with historical events, though I suspect he might have a bias in the examples he chooses. It was particularly interesting to read his description of the Kemalist revolution in Turkey, and I constantly found myself testing his ideas by applying them to the populist politics of Turkey within the last decade. And on that note, anyone with an interest in political theory and Turkish politics should read this book very carefully, as it has potential to provide an approach that would be very useful for the Turkish Left (if such a thing hasn't already been completely eradicated) - mainly that any political agenda that dismisses or belittles populism and its affective potential will also miss its constitutive/performative role and will be doomed to failure.
Some of the conclusions at the end remain slightly incomplete, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The political agency implied in Laclau's theory is more than enough for the reader to imagine some of the possibilities.
Laclau's premises and conclusions aren't theoretically challenging as such and could be summarized in a few pages. But he does such a great job at elucidating his own terminology and building his main arguments point by point, drawing from other work in political theory around the notion of populism, as well as fields like semiotics and psychoanalysis (and I give him credit especially for this considering how skeptical I am of psychoanalytic theory in general).
It's also quite excellent that he always exemplifies his points with historical events, though I suspect he might have a bias in the examples he chooses. Já deveria ter lido o Laclau há bem mais tempo, e fico feliz de meu primeiro contato direto com ele ser tão bom. O arcabouço de análise por ele construído não só é, por si mesmo, bem potente, como é bem propício (pela própria forma como é estruturado) a expansões e correções.
P.S.: Por mais que eu goste bastante do Žižek, foi engraçada demais a surra que o Ernesto deu nele no fim do livro.

کتاب یک محور اساسی دارد اینکه پوپولیست چیست آیا هر پوپولیستی بد است؟ سئوال بسیار دقیق مطرح شده و به ما میگوید باید کمی عمیق تر نگاه کنیم گاهی بعضی شعار ها واقعا پوپولیستی است که هر جریان فکری باید در برابر آن ایستادگی کند ولی گاهی برعکس شعار در ابتدا به نظر پوپولیستی میاید یا نظام حاکم آن را پوپولیستی میشمارد ولی در واقع اینگونه نیست و این نقطه ای است که باید بدانیم پوپولیست چیست و آیا هر پوپولیستی بد است.

Para comprender el populismo, parece que no hay mejor teórico que Laclau. Es importante rescatar varios elementos: 1. El populismo no es un movimiento sino una lógica política; 2. Es necesaria la constitución de indentidades populares (catalizando demandas y la significación); 3. Una superficie de inscripción popular.

I want to start with the shining light of this book: Laclau's expression. He deftly constructs his understanding of populism through myriad concepts - utilising Lacan, Copjek, distinctions of ontological v ontic categories, mass theorists and Saussure alike. Despite its rather challenging breadth - invoking letit objet a, and distinguishing Laclau's position of 'empty signifier' as distinct from the flimsier claim of 'signifier without signified', are readily muddied waters - the structure of the book flows nicely. This is perhaps aided by Laclau's foregrounding of the social demand as his core unit, rather than 'individual', 'community', 'polity', or 'state'.
Laclau commences with a discussion of the core populist motif of plebs against populis in Part I 'The Denigration of the Masses'. Here is where much of the mass-theorists work is utilised. Laclau traces the deterioration of the concept of the mass - and the Roman 'plebs' - against any other segment of the social. Here Laclau starts to sketch an outline of what populism and populist reason is, though admits that at this stage it is incomplete. Key to this understanding is the distinction between the popular demand and the democratic demand - where the former is synonymised with equivalences, the latter with differences. This is the lynchpin in the development of the equivalential chain.
In Part II 'Constructing the People' Laclau relies heavily upon the role of the empty signifier. This is vehemently distinguished against a notion of 'signifier without signified', which Laclau does not agree with. Instead, the empty or floating signifier is a signifier whose "content" is more malleable than any other signifier. This partially explains how populist arrangements are often so detached from what others may see as consistent ideologies. In my crude terms (not Laclau's), and at risk of triggering the Godwin Law, it partly explains how the NSDAP was able to appropriate the name 'socialism' in a manner so convincing to many smoothbrains in the 21st century.
In this part, Laclau also furthers the the chain of equivalence and the role of frontiers within the political. The chain of equivalence is developed as a way of conceptually accounting for potentially contradictory social demands along a populist frontier, where each popular demand is equated to another - D1 = D2 = D3 ... - which explains how a link between otherwise unrelated D1 and Dx is established.
Part III 'Populist Variations' stood out for its detailed analysis of the historical record, including looking to Peron, Boulanger, and Eastern European populisms. Here the regional variations are discussed - including how Eastern European populisms have generally formed around racial lines, which almost precipitates Srebrenica style events.
Laclau's structural development of populism reminds me of poaching an egg, in that initially he starts with a notion that has no other ties (Part I), followed by a revision of this to create a more thorough image (Part II), before being able to rely upon previously established notions from Part I and Part II to create a thorough understanding of populist reason (Part III).
My only complaints to be found in the text are the occasionally unweildy concept. Laclau does an excellent job of discussing the relevance to populism the role of the discredited plebs, or the crucial role that rhetorical techniques have in sketching the sociopolitical fabric (e.g. cathexis). However some other concepts, especially Lacanian ones, seem to be referenced in a rapid fire manner. This is mostly in response to his critics (Zizek foremost among them), meaning a good portion of the last chapter reads like an intellectual flex. Despite that, the book still retains a 5 star rating - the positive enunciation of Laclau's thought can be neatly severed from what (to the outsider) reads like a bickering match - which Laclau surgically wins.

Thus concludes Ernesto Laclau's book "On Populist Reason," a book, for any number of reasons, is essential reading for those interested in a new, more accurate manner of viewing politics in today's era of 'globalized capitalism.' This book assumes the mantle of the 'must read' category by its articulation, in an easy to comprehend style, of the nature of populist politics that is radically connected to theories of language and psychology (Lacan and DeSassure). For Laclau posits that the populist moment occurs when the differentiated, 'democratic' claims of a society, overloaded due to disruptions in the system of politics presently conceived, are altered from particular claims on the system to 'equivalential' claims where a part of the 'chain' assumes hegemonic relations to the claims of the rest of the disputed, ignored attestments (part assumes the role of the whole). And this assumption includes the claim or creation of a 'people,' which are being disenfranchised by their enemies. And the 'people' are in fact an 'empty signifier' that is empty due to its assumption of the symbolic 'head' of the argument's topic. This line of reasoning, somewhat slightly abstract in general, assumes particularities that define it more clearly in the many examples of populist movements cited by Laclau in this work. Grudgingly read for a project, made me appreciate Hegemony and Socialist Strategy which is saying something. There are some salutary aspects to this book, not least actually trying to think about politics and diagnosing the fear of "populism" as an allergy to politics per se. Shame he says basically nothing interesting about that topic. Populism = the formation of a "people" = politics (or at least an archetypal "operation" of politics, post-structuralists love abuse imported mathematical terms) = just about anything potentially, since Laclau denies that there is any essential difference between political and social action? It all depends how and if "democratic demands" are "articulated in a chain of equivalences" allowing for the formation of an "antagonistic frontier" between the "people" (the plebs [a part] that makes a claim to be the true populus [the whole]) and the... not-people? [The "enemy"?]. But wait, the claimed universality is always actually a partiality which is unified around a "floating signifier" (a particular concrete demand, a leader) in which there is "radical investment" and which confers the unity on the particular demands. But we can never actually achieve the "fullness" which this investment promises: the fulfilment of all demands. (Every floating signifier is an "partial object" which stands in for the unachievable primordial unity and that's just how it be - thanks M. Lacan). So it's rinse and repeat, history is but a chain of discontinuous "hegemonic articulations" from here until eternity. What will the next one be? Stay tuned!

Laclau entiende el populismo como una forma de creación de lo político. Para esto debe dejar de lado al pueblo como unidad a ser estudiada, y tomar como unidad básica la demanda, tanto en su dimensión de pedido como de reclamo. Esto implica demandas que se pueden encadenar, generando un pueblo, el cual se define por los vínculos entre las demandas y gracias a que una toma el lugar de significante vacío, el cual puede llenado, dependiendo de las demandas que aglutine. Por supuesto, en la dinámica política, esto implica la negociación entre heterogeneidades, tanto internas como externas al campo de representación, y la formación de un antagonismo que permita que el pueblo, en tanto plebs, pueda tomar lugar de populus: elevar a die Sache a la dignidad de Das ding, en términos lacanianos. Esta lógica, denominada razón populista, dará lugar a la Hegemonía como constitución de representación, el cual permanecerá en el poder durante un momento histórico, como recoge de Gramsci. Libro muy interesante, no solo para entender el populismo, sino las dinámicas propias de lo político.

I fairly enjoyed the book as an exploration to the thought process of academics and scholars in the construction of the “people”.
I read the book in English which is not my native language and often times I stopped as I realised that I did not actually fully comprehend what he was saying. The actual construction of the sentences where quite hard to understand and I had to Google quite many of the terminologies used.
I chose to read the book for my Bachelor’s thesis where I explore the presence of Populist rhetoric in one politician’s Twitter/X communication, and I would say that the book gave me a comprehensive look on how we should view the construction of populism as not just a mere grouping of a homogenous people but there is a wide verity of approaches that can take part in the construction of the “people” in both right and left wing politics.
