Some time ago I had read this story, but didn't remember much of the plot just that it left a good impression.
In my second reading the good impression continued and solidified. Here is my review:
Emma is a guardian angel and has been working in this role ever since she had died as a human many years ago. The problem is: Emma doesn't know how to keep "distance" from her "charges". One of the rules of guardian angels is not to interfere with the human world and she can't see her "charge" in danger.
Because of this she is taken to her superior and given an almost impossible task in the eyes of others: Henry Mills.
Henry is a 10 year old boy whose guardian angel has "quit" his post and now, unlike the common, Emma has to watch over a being that already has its guards formed.
She finds Henry on a bus running away from home and sends enough "will" to make him want to go back home.
She then discovers that he is adopted and has mixed feelings toward his adoptive mother.
Although the narrative doesn't tell why Henry has these mixed feelings about his adoptive mother, the story was interesting enough that these plot holes didn't affect my eagerness.
What most allure the story to me was how the power Emma has is basically a mental power. No magic or things like that, but only the power of her mind to point and direct thoughts and feelings into her protégé.
The relationship between Emma and Regina was interesting as well, despite having a plot hole in how Regina didn't see Emma from the start if she had this gift. However, the best relationship is that of Emma and Henry.
The story doesn't say whether Emma is really the biological mother of Henry, but for those who watched the series, the end of the story implies that Henry is the biological son of Emma who will look for her, like in the series. However, this is just one of the possibilities, since the end was vague enough ...
Anyway ... A quick and pleasant read, which I needed after reading a drama earlier.
