Just one glance and this lonely alien shifter instantly craves Anna for his mate. Too bad the beautiful treasure-hunter seems blind to what’s truly valuable…
When space-pirate-in-training Anna Nilsson embarks on her first solo mission to plunder an abandoned luxury cruiser, she assumes she’ll be all alone aboard the big, empty ship. She’s hunting for treasure - the last thing she expects to find is a sinfully sexy alien who eyes her with a hunger that speaks of centuries of longing.
Leo’s ancient race has suffered greatly at the hands of the strangers who invaded their planet centuries ago, leaving the barbarians without a home world. When he awakes from stasis to the scent of a blood mate, he is stunned to discover the delectable creature is human. Being close to her sets his senses on fire, but he knows the attraction can only end in misery. What human could ever love a shape-shifting barbarian?
When a third occupant of the not-so-abandoned cruiser shows itself, the two realize they must work together if they want to get out alive.
Then they uncover a baby who just might be the priceless clone of a famous cultural icon, and things really start to get interesting…

📍📍 Quote I Love in this Book📍📍 “Push, Anna, Push,”
🔹️Anna Nilsson left Tarker’s Hollow to join the cadet program. Something happened to her space pod, they drifted for more than a 100 years. Now she is on Stargazer headed to her first assignment on an abandoned luxury cruiser.
🔹️Leo is from a Ancient Race called the Barbarians. Just waking up on a deserted ship he's worried, did he kill everyone on this vessel? Then he spots this beautiful women that turn his blood hot.
Holy hot alien shifter!! "TOLSTOY" is a brand new, out of this world must read story that is set in futuristic outer space! How about a lone, hunky, barbarian that can shift into almost anything & a beautiful, naive human who is a freshman 'space-pirate' that was dropped off for her first mission on a deserted spaceship, or are the two of them really alone? I loved the surprise twists & turns as this totally fresh world-building begins a new PNR, Sci-fi sub-genre series :D With well-defined characters, witty dialogue and great attention to detail I was hooked from the start, on the edge of my seat to where I did not want to stop, and read this in record time! Even tho I always volunteer to read this author's books in advance, I have already one-clicked my own Kindle ebook to keep in my favorites forever :D So yes, I highly recommend this to adult fans of fiction & can't wait for more from this phenomenal new series!
I think this is my favorite Tasha Black romance so far. Anna is a scavenger, a privateer, who salvages usable items from abandoned spaceships. She's dropped off on an abandoned ship to tag it for salvage, only to discover she's not alone. There's Leo the handsome alien who thinks she's his mate, a baby who might be the clone of Russian writer Tolstoy, and something else...something evil.
Tolstoy pulled me into the story right away with the awesome world-building. It felt like I was watching the movie, "Passengers." The characters are so charming and likable, and the story kept me guessing. I absolutely loved the little origami drone BFF19. It was so cute and clever. It's worth reading the book just for the scenes with the drone. But Tolstoy overall is great. Read it!
Have to admit, I read all three books before I started to write reviews. I loved all three of these books. This one starts with Anna. After an accident in space, her and two of her friends lost a couple hundred years, they were picked up by a woman they referred to as mama and are now treasure hunters. They board empty space vessels and tag them for what they perceive is valuable. Her first vessel just happened not to be empty. Not only did she find an amazing looking man, who happens not to be human, she also finds a baby. I love their story, but you must read all three in order to really feel about these characters.
Barbarians..., bring them on. Very interesting paranormal, I enjoyed the first book in this new series and I am looking forward to many more to come :). I like that the characters are adventurous and brave, no wimps here. The things that can happen when confined to a spaceship are explored to the max, author keeps the plot focused on main characters as they get to know one another (yes, mate time!) and accomplish their task. I think it leaves less room for weighing the options when they have few on them to consider and survival is upmost.
I enjoyed reading this book 📚, it is filled with action and intrigue. The chemistry between Anna and Leo is wonderful. Loved the scene when Tolstoy's old stopped working. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
This series bridges Tasha’s Tarker’s Hollow based books and her futuristic sci-fi romances in a great way that will make her alien romances even more appealing to fans of her work. And it opens the door to her fans who have only either her more contemporary set books or her alien romances to check out the other. Anna Nilsson is new to the world she’s found herself in, one of Earth’s first space cadets lost in stasis for a very long time. She didn’t arrive alone, her fellow cadets Raina and Angel were found with her, and they were sold while in stasis to a privateer who salvages and uses the proceeds to fill out her crew with women who would otherwise find themselves on the pleasure ships. Anna knows she has to salvage to work off the debt, but her first salvage job goes sideways nearly from the start. She’s dropped off at an abandoned luxury cruiser that forms a mini ship graveyard with two others of the same kind, and it’s more familiar technology than any she’s found in this strange new world. But it’s almost immediately clear that she isn’t alone on the abandoned ship, and whatever’s there with her is hunting her. Leo has woken to find the ship he guarded abandoned. Decayed. And invaded by a human salvager, little better than a pirate. Despite the instinct that tells him she’s his destined mate, Leo has little trust in humans because of what their kind did to his people long ago. Add to that his spotty memory form too long in stasis, and his interactions with Anna are fraught with tension. Especially once they discover the 3rd occupant of the cruiser: a tiny baby called Tolstoy preserved in stasis and offered the highest security the ship can offer with no crew remaining. But there’s also something else inhabiting the ship, something that threatens them all as they try to find their way out and start to become a family in the process. This series is off to a great start! A human dropped into a strange new landscape, an unusual alien who’s lost nearly as much time as she has, a cloned baby in peril, and a monster hiding in the shadows hunting them all. There’s the familiar elements of fated mates and found family that are often featured in Tasha’s work. And then there’s the way that the mystery of what’s happened on the cruiser, what’s hunting Anna, Leo, and Tolstoy feels like simply another layer of mystery because of the way the hero and heroine are flying blind. The mystery evolves to action when the creature forces them to battle their way out, and the draw of their mate bond results in more than a bit of steamy interaction. I love the way that Anna and Leo form a little family with Tolstoy even before they solidify their own relationship, and the dual conflicts of the beast and the way both Anna and Leo are at war with themselves makes for a compelling read. Looking forward to Raina and Angel’s stories!
Tolstoy is the start of Tasha Blacks new alien series. The series starts off strong in this book - Leo and Anna find each other almost immediately. I think it's a good thing that 'Barbarians' have the equivalent of love at first sight because our author doesn't waste anytime with introductions here. We also have a lot of questions come up 'Why did Leo lose his memory?' 'Why was he in stasis and no one else even survived?' 'What is this evil inky creature and where did it come from?' 'Why do the sight of humans bring immediate distaste for Leo?' 'What is earth like now?' and so on....Considering that it is a short read, I hope that Tasha Black takes the time to answer these questions as the series progresses. The conclusion of the book wraps up most of Leo and Anna's story, covering all the high points anyway, but ends in a cliffhanger way that leads into book 2.
In general an enjoyable afternoon read, especially if you like a little bit of scifi mixed in with your reading. I do have two small complaints ... #1 Tasha Black is in no way the only author to have started doing this but I am finding it increasingly annoying. Author don't seem to be giving us a full story anymore... Everything is rushed, immediate and generally has no backstory. Since digital reading, the pressure must be on for authors to write numerous stories within a year but I prefer a bit more of a premise myself. For example with this story so much is left unsaid... Could of had girls joining space cadets and entering pods, featured auction and mama buying them, conflict of being brought up to speed on the reality of losing 200 years, more banter between our main characters, explanation of why ship empty (time spent putting puzzle together from logs ect) more tension between couple before they consummate (for me that's my favorite part, I could skip the actual sex description) and so on .... I'm not a writer but if I can see so many areas of expansion so should the author and more importantly their publisher. #2 The first book I read by Tasha Black was Bond. I loved it! Mostly because of the unique story, humourous misunderstandings and continuous banter back and forth. This book and storyline had that same potential but I don't think it was used. #3 My favorite part of the story is the little bot that help with the tagging of items and so on. She is brave, humourous and exactly the right type of bot personality. She helps move the story along when it otherwise might make a more awkward transition.
Starting number two and hoping things get even better....
This is the start of an AMAZING series! But be warned: it does NOT work as a stand-alone. Though there are hints throughout all the books, you have to read the whole trilogy and look back before you really understand what’s going on. There are general plot cliff-hangers for each book, but the romances are all self-contained within each novel. All are well written, with great characters, occasional funny moments, and a compelling mystery that spans the series. It’s really fun and I highly recommend it.
From here on, there are minor spoilers to give a general feel for the characters in the first book without getting into any of the mysteries/plot.
This one has the destiny trope, with fated true mates and a crazy journey that magically works out. There’s also an adopted baby, which should not be a surprise given the cover.
Anna has a pretty complex backstory. She grew up on Earth in Tarker’s Hollow, but wanted to leave because she wanted to go somewhere exciting. She signed up for the cadet program: a 4 year commitment before she could have the freedom to explore the universe. Unfortunately, the ship she, Angel, and Raina got lost in space after a wormhole collapsed behind them. They were all in stasis for centuries before being found and auctioned a woman (Mama) who put her to work salvaging, a better option than being sold to a pleasure ship.
My heart broke for Leo’s character. He’s a fairly typical alpha, but he does have a personality and lots of insecurities. It’s very clear right off the bat that Leo has personally experienced racism and has internalized it — having thoughts like: “He was a barbarian, but her presence made him feel refined and almost human.” 💔☹️ Poor guy.
I usually get annoyed with love at first sight books because I like seeing characters learn about each other and grow into a relationship. This one actually did that fairly well, considering the premise. The world-building is fun, but it felt like the author was holding back on some info to be revealed later in the trilogy. I really liked the character and concept of the AI character BFF19.
Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion. I was not financially compensated for this post.
Awesome story about shapeshifter in and out of place human
When I first encountered the series I thought oh the regular shapeshifter story. There's nothing regular about this story. It's a mixture of sci-fi, fantasy, and old-fashioned romance. Leo is considered a barbarian, ship cruiser security, and a shapeshifter who is thought of a low status. Anna is human, scavenger, and bought out of stasis (finding out she is an out-of-work space by 200 years).
She arrived at this space cruiser and is tagging rarest items to scavenge. Anna I presume there's no life on board, but then there's Leo. Leo tells her that she is his blood mate. Strangely enough she feel drawn him. And then there's a little problem of finding a baby clone of Lev Tolstoy, the famous writer. There's another problem of strange shadowy-like creature attacking them. Will they escape?
This mixture of sci-fi, fantasy, and an old-fashioned romance is enchanting at the characters in this book. Strong emotions are are running rampant of lust and fear. After all this is a abandoned, defunct space cruiser.
I thoroughly enjoy this unique book and I'm looking forward to the other two in the series. I highly recommend this for readers that are looking for the unusual and awesome book.
Anna is on her first salvage mission. A huge space cruise ship. She is alone with her adorable little wrist drone named BFF29--and that little robot-like being is a BFF with personality. Learning her way, Anna finds another living creature--a dangerous vicious creature. When another life reaches out to save her she is beginning to wonder just how crowded is this space vehicle? Little does she know that there is one more being on board. An adorable little human baby. Back to her rescuer--male--humanoid--hot--very hot--and looks at her with lust. He has some secrets but his feelings for her are no secret. She feels the pull too even though she doesn't have the term for it.
With communication issues, they have to work together to save this special baby and themselves. Once again Ms. Black has given us an alien with a strong hot body but tenderness many human men lack.
I loved the story, there are some super tender scenes I won't ruin for you by describing. Ms. Black does a much better job. I do think the ending was a bit abrupt, however, I can't wait to find out how her two partners make out (professional and physically-lol) with their Barbarian Aliens.
Such an amazing book, Anna Nilsson was found with three other girls from earth that never made it to there destination so while in there statis pods the captain of the Stargazer took them in and saved them now they must pay the debt to her by working as trainee pirates and catalog the things they see on these three ships they found. When Anna steps on board with her AI to start working she comes across a beautiful forest inside the ship and is amazed it’s still alive all the while unaware she has awoken a man still on board and when they meet its amazing the chemistry that’s between them and Leo know instantly that she is his mate and must find away to tell her, but they aren’t alone she feels another presence that’s evil. Now working together to get off the ship and be saved they come across a baby in statis and his name is Tolstoy and Anna realizes its a clone of a famous author Lev Tolstoy and is priceless now the evil black presence wants the baby. Does everything work out and are they all saved in time, read this book to find out more.
Yes folks, she'd started and completed a series before I had even noticed it!! Bad on me for reading a few other favorite authors before looking her up again! I love this book and can see from it the next couple of books in this series is going to be just as terrific as this one. (And a couple of one's did read that came after this.) Tasha is a great writer for "word" people. She strings Them together painting a "picture" in your mind that appears so clear that the emotions might well be your own. I can remember one situation where I was thinking very clearly ",Rains do as Nick says, run for it!" Wait till read what that little brainstorm of mind was cause by! That's only at the beginning, with the greatest find to come beside Nick and most valuable of all in the end. Has to be of they are willing to give their lives for it, right? ? Best get to reading it. Was sure worth it to come back for!!
Anna Nilsson's first solo mission as a space pirate is to plunder an abandoned luxury cruiser but she discovers she is not alone when she finds a sexy alien looks at her with an ancient hunger. Leo's ancient race suffered greatly at the hands of strangers so is thrilled to wake from stasis to discover his blood mate although he accepts it can never go anywhere as no human would want a shape-shifting barbarian. Things change when they discover a third occupant - a baby - who might be a priceless clone of a famous cultural icon - however, they are going to have to work together to all survive. Can they survive and resist the pull between each other?
This was a nice story of an alien meets human and after the cultural differences, they become a committed couple. The clone baby was a weird touch but gave them something in common during the story. Easy to read and understand it was a nice light read.
I normally enjoy the heck out of Tasha Black's writing, but her talents seem to be in stasis in this unfocused, under-plotted smash-up of dragon shifters, interstellar drifters, clones, drones, looting and insta-lust. What? All that in one book? How does that work? IT DOESN"T. With sporadic and minimal backstory and under-developed characters, it's hard to care about any of them, and the romance isn't believable. What passes for a plot is more like a series of utterly random events. There's no real story here; just a catalog of tropes and an acumulation of unanswered questions. By the end of the book I wasn't even interested in learning the answers. I'm giving it two stars rather than one, because BFF19 is an endearing example of Ms. Black's creative genius, and the lone bright spot in a murky mash-up.
Short, but sexy, story about a woman who boards an abandoned star cruiser to tag salvageable items and finds not only a wondrous, still growing, forest wonderland, but a man who seems to fit right into her heart. But there is something dangerous on this huge vessel and Anna is not sure the man is exactly what he seems.
Leo has awoken to find himself on an otherwise empty star cruiser. He can't remember why he was there or what happened to the other occupants. His kind are usually hired as security, but what was he guarding? When Anna comes on-board he immediately knows she is his mate, but what would a human ever see in the life of him? Then they find something that brings them together like nothing else could have, but it will take both of them to protect it from the shadow that stalks the ship.
Anna is in a forgotten corner of space in a very old ship that has a forest in the center. But is she really alone on this huge ship?
Leo is an alien sent long ago to guard this ship. But he can't even remember what happened to the people or himself. But since the girl came in the ship it's awoke up and so has he. And she is his mate. There is danger too on the and they found Tolstoy. Lol you will have to read to find out what it who that is! There is so much going on in the story. It's can't and not to be missed. Great characters, fantastic twists and turns plus don't forget the action, mystery, drama, danger and more. Yeah it has it all. Voluntarily review a copy and I honestly love it
This a interestingly thrilling awesome book! That being said there was what I call a cliffhanger-ish ending.
Possible SPOILERS

Move over Psyfy your next great series has arrived. Anna, a new space pirate, has her first assignment. Cataloging the items on a luxury cruise ship. The first thing she sees are trees. When they meet, sparks fly, and so do they as the other inhabitant of the ship makes himself known. Is it love at first sight when they meet Tolstoy?
When the story starts you don't know what's going to happen, all you know is that if this author does in this story what she's done in the past it'll be a great read. Whispy smoke, a human female on a salvage ship with a droid partner, I just love BFF19, oh and a baby named Tolstoy. A story that is all about 3, no 4, of them in a ship that they need to get working and a barbarian that needs to be stopped. Lets not forget that there's a mating happening also. A story that doesn't disappoint.
This is an easy to read in one day book because you don’t want to put it down. Anna has been in stasis for hundreds of years due to an unexpected incident. On awakening she works for a space scavenger to pay off her debt to the captain who bought her. On her first solo job, she meets Leo, the only living person on a derelict ship. But there’s something not quite right with Leo, even though he takes her breath away when she looks at him. There is also something evil or terrifying on the ship and Anna has no idea what will happen.
Anna Nilsson works for the salvager who purchased her. Anna must work for "Mother" to pay off her debt. Anna is on her first lone salvage mission and runs into trouble when she is attacked by an unknown being. She meets Leo on the ship she is salvaging from and they each feel a pull to the other. The captain comes after them and sees the cloud going after the other 2 abandoned cruise ship. Her friends are there and so is his brothers.
this is book 1 of a brand new series by the author, Alien Barbarian Brides. Scouring around on a derelict spaceship looking for valuables Anna Nilsson comes in contact with an alien. together they fight to survive and protect a baby in a life pod until help can arrive. an alien that was on board to help the ship's crew, awakens with no knowledge of the mission either good or bad but seeing a sexy woman the alien wants her for his mate.
Barbarians were not at all what I thought they were, but I like them and their creation story. Leo is tender hearted and your typical alpha male. I liked that Anna was from Tarker’s Hallow via the long way, this was a nice tie-in. As with all of Tasha’s books the storytelling kept me entertained and on the edge of my seat. This is a great start to a new series!
The love story of Anna and Leo. Anna is a woman from the planet Earth. She and her fellow cadets were blow off course and sold. She was bought by a woman who free other women, now she must work off her debt by doing salvage spaceship. Leo is an alien shifter. They met on a space subcruiser she was salvaging. Something is on the ship and it want a baby that is in stasis. Can they save the baby? Great syory.
Anna is a privateer in outer space. After being saved after being in status for a very long time she has been put on a derelict luxury cruise ship to catalog thing to be salvaged. But what she finds is Leo a barbarian that also was in status for a long time. But they both must serve the shadow thing on the ship. But there is still another secret to find. So enjoy the read!!
I’m always amazed by Tasha Black’s ability to create new worlds. This is set far in the future somewhere in space. Scavenger s find and protect a great treasure while falling in love and fighting a monster. There is also humor and a great drone. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
Anna is a salvage privateer and she encounters Leo. They develop a complete bond between each other. Then, Leo has to change into a dragon to protect Anna and a baby. But to his amazement, Anna is not terrified. This is a short read with a happily ever after. Any age group can read it.
