Fandom: Once Upon a Time (TV) Relationship: Evil Queen | Regina Mills/Emma Swan -------------------------------------------------- Massachusetts State Police Capt. Emma Swan leaves her red-hot career to become the police chief of sleepy Storybrooke, Maine. She's hoping for a less-complicated, less-dangerous life, a desire that is proven wrong on both counts. AU. No magic. Crime drama and romance. Swan Queen is endgame.
The first time I read this story, years ago, I remember liking it very much. The second time I read this story I saw myself scrolling through the pages quickly and wishing the story would come to an end. Here are the points I didn't like in the narrative: a) Although the author says that Regina is a guarded person and full of walls, even before confessing her feelings for Emma and starting a relationship, she didn't find it strange how Henry called Emma's mom one night. b) After a few months in a relationship with Emma, Regina accepts Henry calling Emma as his mother. c) Regina catches Emma smoking one day and freaks out. While a surprise would be expected, reacting as Regina reacted is just very dramatic and very strange. She does a big drama, even though Emma's smoking in her own apartment, away from Henry. She says she doesn't want to see Emma anymore and has a good few weeks crying about this fact. O.o d) When Emma's car catches fire, Regina imagines that Emma is hiding something from her. She doesn't sit down to talk to Emma about it, only at a time when Emma is fragile and in the middle of the night, packs Emma's suitcases and sends her away from the mansion.
The points that caught my attention (good things).
a) Emma is sure of herself, a good professional. b) The police cases Emma deals with is good. c) independent and badass Emma is hot.
Anyway ... For those who don't care about these high dramas that Regina does, the story can be wonderful.
4.5 stars for this Once Upon a Time, AU (Alternative Universe) story, there is no magic and there are a number of original characters.
In this story, Captain Emma Swan leaves the Mass. State Police to become the new Chief of Police of the small town of Storybrook, Maine. Emma is a total badass in this story.
You could split this story into 2 parts. Part 1 is a slow burn romance and Part 2 is a crime drama. As I was reading the first part, I thought to myself – this is one of the fluffiest OUAT stories that I’ve ever read. First off, some main characters - Emma’s police force is made up 10 officers. Most notable is Lt. David Nolan, her unofficial second-in-command, Martha, lead dispatcher for over 20yrs, has a sawed off shotgun under her desk and nothing rattles her. I think you can describe her as a tough old broad. Another officer of note is Shannon “Tink” Bell. Bell is small in statue, but deadly in hand to hand – a champion black belt. Emma’s best friend, whom she considers a brother, is Robert Preacher, a black, 6’4” fellow State Trooper. (I love that he calls Regina “Mayor Mightyfine”). His family ‘adopted’ Emma, such that Emma calls his mother, Mama. Other Storybrook residents are Ruby, the diner waitress and Kathryn, the grade school principal and Regina’s best friend. Ruby and Kathryn scheme to get Regina and Emma together.
And of course there is Mayor Regina Mills. In this story, Regina is a widow, as her husband, Daniel was murdered (unsolved) when she was pregnant with Henry who is now 3 (and a half). Henry bonds with “Chief” Emma almost immediately. Regina’s personality is the least “OUATish”. Although she still can command a room and respect, and Henry is the center of her life, she bears little resemblance to the fearsome “Evil Queen Regina”. Depressed since the death of Daniel, she doesn’t socialize. I began to think of this Regina "Lite" as a separate character from OUAT Regina. I guess, Regina with out the influence of the Evil Queen. Nevertheless, I liked the romance and I still liked this Regina. (half a star deduction).
The second half sneaks in and the fluff disappears. Emma is threatened and she fears for Regina and Henry’s safety. Her friends “The Troopers” arrive to (unofficially) help protect her new family. Storybrook is not the easy, safe, sleepy town that Emma was expecting.
