‘There’s a storm brewing - I can feel it - but it’s got nothing to do with the weather.’
Shaun Young knew from the start that Evette Minton would be more than the sum of her parts found strewn at sea after a storm, more than just an investigative journalist who’d fallen prey to the ravages of her profession.
He found that she had an unconventional approach to life - obsessive and sometimes outside of the law – similar to the way he tackled police work. He identified with her passion for establishing the baseline truth, regardless of personal cost - this is what commitment to a cause looked like.
She had been trying to uncover the financial and social injustice of large corporate organisations buying their way into multi-million-pound contracts. But she’d underestimated the power of big money - the deeper she dug, the more elusive the proof became.
What started as an objective investigation would become a personal crusade. Rules would be bent for the greater good, her quest the only priority. Friends and colleagues were important only inasmuch as their capacity to help her achieve her mission. It became a lonely road to walk, and the further she went, the more vulnerable and isolated she became. This would ultimately be her downfall.
I was born in London in 1959 – the year that Agatha Christie published her novel Cat Among the Pigeons and Ian Fleming released Goldfinger. I currently live in Milton Keynes and have had so many homes over the years that the section in my mum’s address book is an inch-thick in correction fluid.
After a long career of running projects and programmes for the private and public sectors in engineering, petrochemical, academic and public service industries, I hung up my corporate boots for a more directly creative profession.
I published my first novel, The Pink Herring, in 2017 and followed it up with The Nor'easter in 2018 - the second in a series of books featuring the criminal psychologist Shaun Young and Norfolk CID.
As jobs go, fiction writing is long, hard and mentally challenging work but it is also the most immersive, creative and rewarding thing I have ever done. Long may it continue…
The Nor'Easter, Tom Grove's second novel, continues the strong story lines and well-rounded characters of his first, The Pink Herring. This is a real page-turner, with a fascinating plot, lots of action, and will have you on the edge of your seat, wondering what to expect next.
Dismembered body parts appear, prompting the start of a police enquiry which leads to myriad complexities both business and personal, and revealing the complicated life of a dedicated and driven reporter. She wished more than anything to reveal the truth, and paid for her determination with her life.
This book deserves a wide readership, and will reward your effort in following the intriguing story.
I was given a copy of The Nor’easter to review prior to release as I enjoyed the debut book, The Pink Herring. Shaun Young and the team return to solve the grisly death of an investigative journalist. It is an excellent story set around the development of an offshore wind farm - corporate money, corruption, competition, activists - and one woman’s crusade to out the truth. Her life becomes complicated by the depth of her obsession, blurring the lines between those in her personal and professional circles. We meet a wide range of interesting and diverse characters (including the victim in flashback) who all lead us along the path of suspicion. The story twists and turns to a gripping conclusion - it looks like Shaun Young is here to stay.
It’s taken awhile but I finally got to read the second novel in the Shaun Young series - The Nor’easter. It didn’t disappoint. A great story with several twists and turns and an ending I didn’t guess. I enjoyed getting to know more about the main characters as the story picked up from the previous book - The Pink Herring. A definite page turner and I highly recommend it.
Another great read from author Tom Grove. Great character and plot development a very satisfactory follow up to our introduction to Shaun Young from the Pink Herring. Ready for the next one now
Really enjoying the different facets of Shauns character and how he relates to situations and his fascinating eidetic memory. Recommend this book to anyone who loves a really good , well plotted and researched crime thriller. It kept me page turning and guessing as it twisted with the speed of a rollercoaster. Thoroughly enjoyed it, can't wait for the next one.
Just raced my way through The Nor’easter. Another thoroughly enjoyable and well written novel. The story has some clever twists and turns which we now expect where Shaun Young is concerned. Very much looking to what comes next.
