Entry Shock

Rate this book
An unexpected entry…

Shark shifter Ian Mackey works alone.

His job is important: to protect the guys in his covert rescue swimmer unit—from predators, from the press, from each other.

So what if he lives alone, too? And eats alone? And sleeps alone?

Solitude works for him. Lets him focus on the job and a few favorite extracurriculars.

The last thing he needs is a rescue partner.

Especially one who’s prickly and stubborn and distractingly hot.

And who intends to evade Mackey in the water and out.

A shock to the system…

Trick Harper doesn’t need a damned babysitter.

He’s a veteran rescue shifter. He embraces the mission, he gets the job done, and his deafness is an asset.

So what if he does things his own way? Goes a little off-plan? Gets creative?Autonomy works for him. Or it did, until the one time it didn’t.

Now he’s chained to another shark, a hulking bruiser who pushes every button Trick’s got.

Especially the ones that haven’t been touched in a while.

If Mackey takes matters into his big, scarred hands, ignoring him is going to be impossible.

ENTRY SHOCK is the 3rd novel in the ROGUE RESCUE series, steamy paranormal romances featuring marine-shifter heroes:

Epic romance, two heroes at a time! My story universe features warriors and blacksmiths, rescue swimmers and hockey players, treasure hunters and time travelers, and quite a few shifters. My favorite kind of hero: a grumpy f*cker who’ll do anything for the man he loves.

Happy reading :)

Huh, well that epilogue wasn’t mysterious at all!

And can we take a minute to admire all the covers of this author’s different series. Love them!

The story was good. Sweet and fast romance with two shark shifters starting off on the wrong foot, or fin. I loved that Trick being deaf was a total non-issue and he always thought of himself as totally alright and not disabled in any capacity.

Overall I think this could’ve been more but was still totally fine for what it was. I’m def going to try another of her series.

If you’re a fan of LGBTQ paranormal romances, and especially those featuring shifters, then Mia West is an author who should be on your reading list! Having first picked up her work with the Alaskan set Grizzly Rim series featuring native wildlife of the area (including my first ever book with an eagle shifter), I eagerly awaited her latest series in a new setting – that of the open water. Entry Shock is the third story in the Rogue Rescue series, about an elite secret unit of the Coast Guard. The members of the unit are for the most part water animal shifters – dolphins, seals, and in the case of this exciting and adventurous story – sharks. Who can resist a shark shifter? Well, not I! I’m happy to say that this story turned out to be my favorite of the series.

If the general population knew about shifters, no-one would be in the least surprised to discover that Ian Mackey’s alter ego is a shark. Quiet, observant, and no-nonsense, Mackey is the man his team relies on to keep them safe, patrolling the waters for wild sharks while the dolphins and seals assist the victims of boating accidents until the ‘real’ coast guard rescuers arrive. Using lethal force when required, Ian is motivated but cautious about maintaining control. His personal history includes abandonment by his mother and then going to live with his grandfather, who taught him everything he knows. He lives in an old lighthouse, a family home, and an easy place from which to slip into the water to patrol and keep an eye on his teammates even when they’re not on duty. He has some dark secrets in his past, but they are well hidden.

A chance encounter with another shark in his territory turns into a more complicated situation when the rogue shark turns out to be a new member of their unit. Patrick ‘Trick’ Harper has been assigned to the Rogue Rescue team as Mackey’s new partner, and to help instill some discipline in the maverick shark. Trick is deaf, adept at reading lips on land and with no need for hearing in the water where his other senses come into play, including all water shifters’ ability to communicate telepathically. Putting a shark who needs control and one in need of a stern hand together as partners is like oil on water, until they discover that sexually, it makes for a helluva match. Blowing off some steam together when off duty starts out fine, but soon an affair isn’t enough for Trick. Will Ian’s secrets keep him from letting Trick become his partner in the water and out?

Alpha males can be tricky beasts to write in such a way that they’re not totally overbearing and there’s no doubt that anyone who can shift into a shark’s body is going to be an alpha male. In this story you’ve got two such men, and they butt heads (literally) at their first meeting. But even though they are both tough guys on the outside, they’ve got emotional and sensitive sides, too. Mackey’s care for his teammates is the non-verbal kind, patrolling the waters by their homes to keep wild sharks away, and never wanting to miss a work shift (including going to extremes to show up). Trick is used to people treating him differently due to his hearing loss and is often on the defensive as a result. When the two of them are together, and especially after sex (those scenes are h-o-t by the way) they can relax and let down their guards. One of the signs that Mackey wants to get to know Trick better (even if he won’t say it out loud) is that he starts learning American Sign Language so that they can communicate on yet another level.

The author uses an interesting and effective method to express the use of sign language between Trick and Mackey by putting signing in double parentheses. In an author’s note, she says this is to avoid the use of having to say ‘he signed’ all the time, and also to show the growth in Trick and Mackey’s relationship as Mackey becomes more comfortable with signing.

He settled against the chair, and Trick dug in again. His hands were large and warm, and as strong as the rest of him. Mackey knew that of course – he’d already enjoyed one massage from them. They just felt different today. As if they were on him for him, not just for Trick.

((Thanks.))

(( For what?))

He didn’t know how to sign it, so he turned his head.“For talking me down today.”

Trick becomes a teacher to Mackey, showing him signs for things on land, even as Mackey trains him in the water. Then in the bedroom, it adds extra intimacy to their scenes.

One of the strengths of this series is its originality, combining the popular theme of men in uniform with a unique mission to aid coast guard rescues from under the water. Each of the water shifters has a particular place and task in the water, and the worldbuilding is very well done with the logistics of shifting and some exciting underwater scenes. There are several secondary characters including some family members of the team that have particular parts to play, and the door is left open for more in the series, or a spinoff. The secret that keeps Mackey from fully embracing a relationship with Trick is eventually revealed and has some consequences later in the book, and there’s an interesting reveal near the end that took me by surprise. In fact the only thing that keeps that book from a solid A for me deals with that later reveal (which I don’t want to spoil) only because I think the significance of it isn’t dealt with fully. But I’ve no hesitation in recommending this or any of the author’s other books to readers looking for some heat, action and unique worldbuilding (including her non-paranormal historical romance series set in post Roman Britain, Into the Fire, and her Arthurian Sons of Britain saga) with guaranteed happy endings all around.

This was an ok read for me ... that is the problem when you dislike one of the MCs on the first pages .... and it really took some time to overcome that.

Additionally it was just an ok story

Not sure I will read the others in this series

The newest Rogue Rescue romance shocks readers with gripping emotions and thrilling suspense. Ian and Trick are two strong, captivating males that easily draw readers into their story. The relationship starts off with a hurdle to be overcome but then both move on the sizzling heat that burns between them while trying to adjust to the changes in their lives and on the team. The romance is sweet but with lots of emotional turmoil that adds depth and makes it easy for the readers to understand where these characters are coming from. Ian’s past plays a major part of the emotional turmoil and Trick is fundamental in adding a positive influence in Ian’s emotional issues, which surprises readers as well as the characters. There is a bit of a lopsided view of this couple as readers are given more detail about Ian and less about Trick, which readers may feel would make the romance a bit better, but doesn’t stop them from enjoying it.

The story is fast paced and flows smoothly from the pages with their searing romance but with added excitement of death defying rescue missions and an unexpected twists that answers some questions regarding Ian but adds more in relation to the team. The unique shifters and their roles in this fascinating world makes for a really great change in shifter romances and the author brings it all to vivid life with great detailing that makes it easy for the readers to imagine each and every scene. This romance can be read as a standalone story, but readers may find that reading the previous books gives them a better understanding of this fascinating world as the conclusion definitely readers know that there is more going on.

I bought this book on a whim when I saw it as a bookbub deal, mostly for laughs with a friend as we played the "which major fandom did this author write fic for" game. (I might have an idea ;-)

But once I started reading it, I was completely hooked.

I LOVE THIS BOOK.

A LOT.

The main characters are both struggling with themselves at the beginning of the story, both very lonely in their own ways. One sullen and by the book, one hiding himself behind being a risk-taking pain in the ass. I loved how their character arcs played out, how much their relationship and interacting with each other allowed them to grow. It was very deftly done.

I very much appreciated how the characters being shark shifters wove into the story as much more than just window dressing. It's crucial to the character's story arcs and the plot.

One of the main characters is disabled (deaf, using ASL) and I really appreciated how that was handled, as simply another aspect of the character, dealt with in the same way as his other traits. The second main character (whose love language is very much acts of service) works on learning ASL, and is very conscious of facing the HOH character so he can lip read. It was sweet and well done.

The sex scenes in the book are very well written and hot as hades. They are also very emotional, a good balance that made my heart melt.

There's plenty of action and plot going on as well, making for an enjoyable read that I highly recommend.

I personally feel that this one was better than the first two of the series. Ian and Patrick "Trick" are so perfectly matched that I hate they were the last couple to get their HEA. Also I feel something is missing. Will Mrs. West continue forward from here or will we be last without a finished story.

Ok so book 3 is the standout in this series. It’s not quite as long as book 2 I don’t think. This one focuses on Mackey the shark shifter, who says little bit does a lot in terms of the protection of the other members of the unit, at great detriment to himself. He’s definitely the hulking, big, silent type, ready to spring into action.

Mackey meets his match when Vince recommends Trick join the unit, under the guise of both learning to be team players. What follows is the push and pull of their new relationships - personal and professional. It’s somewhat enemies to lovers though there’s not a strong dislike or hatred to start, and it’s quickly dispelled with given the span of time the book covers.

This book shows Mackeys character arc and whisky we don’t know as much about Trick, we learn enough.

Definitely a big improvement from the first book of the series.

Loved it! As with all of Mia West’s book that I’ve read (this is my sixth) it can get confusing when she regularly leaves out dialogue tags. Especially when it’s a scene with more than two characters. But overall the pros outweigh the cons in these books. I’ve been devouring them.

Also definitely read them in order. I thought her three shifter trilogies could be read in any order as long as the books within each trilogy were in order. But no. Start with Grizzly Rim for sure. Or you’ll get hella spoilers for it when reading Rogue Rescue. Thankfully I only read one out of order so it wasn’t the end of the world. But there was one pretty huge spoiler.

The writing wasn't the greatest. Half the time I wasn't sure if Ian or Trick said a certain line...it was all over the place. I did like the idea of rescue shifters but it was painful trying to get through this one.

I absolutely loved this series and I'm so glad we finished it off with Mackey. Ian and Trick make an adorable pair.
I also enjoyed the plot-twist towards the end, didn't see it coming!

When I started this book, I was afraid it was going to wind up with me rounding down to just a Goodreads 2-star, because Trick didn't make a good first or even second impression on me, with his cocky recklessness, the chip on his shoulder, and (let me be honest) his bit of a kink. However, as he became a real part of the team, and as his relationship with Mackey grew into a meaningful one for both of them, he grew on me, too.

The exciting crisis moments of defending citizens and/or teammates from "wildlife" (meaning wild sharks and other predators) in their marine rescue job are far from the only intense scenes in emotional terms. We gradually learn about Mackey's family history, good and bad, and how it left him with a fear of the harm he might do when he loses his rigid self-control. (There's one final revelation I only saw coming when he was bleeding in the chopper near the end.)

Figuring out what the other needs, and building trust, are not easy for either of them, but I love how Mackey naturally starts learning ASL, and how Trick is determined to convince Mackey that he's better than he thinks he is. I also have to say that I love how both these tough guys reveal their little-shown so-called "geeky" sides, and it's another thing to draw them together. Any character is more interesting if they have more going on between their ears than the basic necessities!

Commander Nadine Brackett and Tom Nichols are an intriguing pair themselves (and I'm glad to see that she knows that her schemes aren't always perfectly aimed) but, unfortunately, I suspect we're only going to get glimpses of them in books centered on the various shifter teams they interact with. Are the northern-waters researchers-slash-treasure-hunters going to be next?

I only caught one minor typo, a missing opening quotation mark in the author's note, in which, by the way, she explains her choices re. how ASL speech is rendered in the text.

I liked Mackey from the previous two book so I was looking forward to reading his story. The beginning was great as Trick and Mackey take each other’s measure. Poor Trick. He is shark shifter and unpleasantly surprised to find out that the hot guy he mets at his new job is the same shark he had a run in with the same morning.
I had no clue sharks can regrow their teeth! Nice tidbit!
Trick has a new job, one he has to make work for him. IT’s his last chance and while he resents it he is not going to throw it away.
Both men are brimming with hostility from the first meeting but underneath it they are attracted to each other.

Why did I find Mackey such an interesting character? Because there was so much more to him under the surface. He is secret geek. Mackey has no interest in relationship or in partner at work so he is surprised as everyone else when he decides to give Trick a chance. I didn’t get the feeling Trick got a lot of second chances so it helps to thaw him a little.

Both men are prickly and and the air between them is almost crackling with heat. Their animosity soon morphs into teasing. They grow closer almost without intention.
When the push comes to show and real danger corners them on the job it strengthens connection between them. They just need to run with it.
They do, and it’s such great ending!

Ok I'm gonna hide this because of a few things -
First - yay shark shifters! I loved that so much! I loved the connection between them as sharks and as people - the shifting in this story was awesome!

I loved the cave and the super hero Mackey turns out to be - I knew his story would be full of awesome and it was! I love that when times get rough Trick sticks to it and doesn't let Mackey get full of his own insecurities - awesome!

I did not understand the need for the spanking - it didn't seem to fit Mackey's personality at all - I saw why Trick would want it - maybe? - but it didn't fit the protector in Mackey at all.

I loved the deafness/sign language part of the story and how it was an ability not a disability!

Brackett confused the hell out of me - why doesn't she shift - does Mackey's other family shift? This felt so weird and didn't make sense and made me dislike Brackett even more. I really hope there isn't more about her because - ugh! - she makes me crazy and is not a likable character at all. The "I wanted you for my son" Yuck. Why wouldn't she tell him sooner - none of it made sense.

I did love Mackey and Trick tho - I'd have loved to understand more about Trick's reasons for being so difficult and would love to see what comes of his math skills.

Ugh. Can Brackett just go away?? She has crossed so many boundaries that is unbecoming in a leader Honestly, I judge Nichols’s taste. Why would you want to get involved with someone like that?

Also, Mackey is such a good guy. And no thanks to his biological parents. That’s all on his grandfather. He is burdened by an event that ended in violence. That has weighed on him and is one of the reasons why he has this drive to protect everyone.

Then, Trick is introduced to the group and he brought such understanding and need for Ian. Trick’s need to be punished for his recklessness matched with Mackey’s need to be in control. Their relationship dynamic is probably my favorite so far.

Seriously, could have done without a single mention of Brackett though. 🤣

Still holding out hope for Lachlan. I’m just so intrigued by his character.

Hi. This was lovely! And such a surprise, I'll be honest.

Here's something you probably don't know: I am afraid of sharks. I know they're not evil, but phobias aren't exactly rational, so I tend to avoid them as much as I can (thankfully that is not that difficult, living in Western Germany). So the fact that I read a book about shark shifters is something of a surprise to me.

Actually, the fact that I read a shifter book as such is a surprise. I haven't read that many that I enjoyed, let alone finished. But this was genuinely great from start to finish. The only reason this is four stars rather than five is that I missed some overall plot. The romance was an absolute delight, and this was a case were every single bed scene felt essential. I really loved this, and if you're at all into shifter stories or stories about sharks who are secret cinnamon rolls you should definitely give this a try.

Yowza! This book was hot and deep. Lol pun intended. Who knew the shark shifters would have hidden depths?

Mackey and Trick are so beautiful to watch. And funny, too. I love how the author describes their moves in a shark like way. Mackey does not just park his car. No, he "prowled the lot, up one row and down the next, before rolling into a spot." The only thing missing is the Jaws background music.

These two have to be my favorite couple. They are attracted to each other immediately, but clash due to issues with authority. As in, one follows rules and the other does not. Trick is feisty and irrepressible and not afraid to take Mackey and his intimidating self on. No worries about bad editing or writing here! I had to fan myself a couple of times because the action and the sex was totally hot.

This was a highly anticipated book, I thoroughly devoured books one and two and was chomping at the bit to read book three. McKay's book, he was such a prominent character. One that I loved so much, I loved them all but he was my favorite. I can't say exactly why, maybe it was his quiet way, in which he was just there for them all like the silent big brother. But this was just as awesome as I expected it to be. Trick was such a character, that it was really great to seem him grow into a strong person.
These three book are a must, even if it is to just read about different shifter animals. There is also a great spin of book series to. Mia West did an amazing job with these books. I enjoyed the dynamics between two of the same shifters. Definitely worth grabbing you won't regret it.

Entry shock N. The discharge of static electricity felt by a rescue swimmer when entering open water from a helicopters hoist cable. This is Mackey and Harpers story. Harper I believe is one on Vince’s men. Ian/Mackey Trick/Patrick are really cute together. Due to Trick being deaf Mackey takes the time to learn sign which I found really sweet. Regardless of the differences between these two I still found them to be a great couple. There are some really hot scenes between these two. Mackey has a great personality however, I found it to be really sad that Mackey was unable to trust himself with Trick because he thought he might hurt him if he lost control. The fact that it these two were able to work it out in the end was truly heartwarming. Must read series enjoy.

The loner Shark shifter Ian Mackey will have his life changed 180 from what his life is like now. Trick ‘Patrick’ Harper is coming from Vince’s team to learn teamwork and discipline, but Trick will be Ian’s beacon of life from is fortress of the family’s lighthouse ( over a hundred years in the family). But the shocker of this whole book beside Ian being more loveable then ever is who an David how Beckett is related to Ian, wow did t see that coming and what she is, why the Base is so near... why Ian was the first to ever be on the team... and Ian’s dark past when he was 16, heartbreaking for a young guy.

When another shark shifter joins the team Mackey find his life changing.
While on his morning patrol of the bay Shifter Ian Mackey encounter another shark and after a short fight the other leaves. When he gets to work he finds there is a new team member Shark shifter Trick Harper who is being paired with him when on dives. They start with a game of words but both are attracted to the other and as they work together the attraction grows stronger. Ian find Trick is slowly wearing away at the walls he has had in place for many years. Can strong shifter find a way to get along or will they be ships that pass in the night. An unusual shifter romance to relax and enjoy.

Mia West has done it again, I like shifter stories, wolfs, bears, big cats. Not so much little animals, dragons and nevery water animals, but Mia has found a way to make them believable and interesting.
We've all heard stories of dolphins helping man, so this series
makes sense. I love the undercover of Coast Guard, they never get the recognition they deserve, so this make perfect sense.
I have now read the three books in this series and hope the will be more.
You must read Mackay's story, you will enjoy it.

This was basically awful and I'm sorry I wasted time reading it. One MC was an ass for all if maybe two chapters and then changed personalities for no reason, spanking was in one scene again no reason, never explored again, and things were done to and by characters randomly. Pretty much no connection between the MCs other than being hot for each other and that read like they were teens not near thirty. It took me ages to be able to keep the MCs clear because the difference was one was really freaking big and the other one was monstrously big. I don't even want to waste any more time writing about it. I'm only giving it two stars because I finished it and the technical editing was good.

Much is revealed in this book as to how the squad came to be as well as Mackey's past. Ian Mackey is a hard arse but when pitched against Patrick "Trick" he finds something he likes very much and becomes very sweet and possessive of trick.
Some small hick ups that get the eyes watering but as always a HEA.

Good read

I enjoyed this series. I loved the characters,I I loved how the author gave you such a great backstory on the characters. Ian was so great and protective, and Trick was cocky with a little chip on his shoulder. I loved seeing both of their growth. And shocker toward the end with Ian's mom totally blew my mind. But this series, while good, wasn't as good as the Grizzly Rim series in my opinion.

I haven't read books 1&2, that may have helped me like this one more, but I didn't dislike this as a stand alone. It read as a complete story.

Ian has put up walls, big, steal walls to keep everyone out. No more allowing anyone close. Until Trick weasels his way inside those walls, and starts to tear them down.

Wasn't sure I was going to like shark shifters, but mostly because I couldn't see how it would work. This works.
