Beoordeling: 2.5/5 (afgerond naar beneden)

Deze bundel bestaat uit de vertalingen van The Witness for the Prosecution, The Body in the Library*, Three Blind Mice, Cat Among the Pigeons en The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding.

Ik begon met Witness for the Prosecution (Getuige à charge).

Daarna volgde The Body in the Library (Dood van een danseres), hello again Miss Marple.

Elk verhaal zit technisch zo sterk in elkaar.
-----------------------------------
This Dutch book combines two books and 3 short stories. I started with Witness for the Prosecution. Apparently one of her most famous short stories — and now I completely understand why. It’s a tightly constructed courtroom thriller that constantly shifts your perception. Just when you think you have it figured out, Christie turns everything upside down. The twist is genuinely impressive. Remarkable how much impact she creates in so few pages.

Next came The Body in the Library, hello again Miss Marple. Finding a body in your own library — one you don’t even recognise — is such a deliciously absurd premise. What begins as a shocking discovery develops into a cleverly layered murder case full of red herrings and hidden motives. I especially appreciated how seriously the police take Miss Marple. Her understanding of human nature is a joy to read.

With Three Blind Mice (the basis for The Mousetrap), I found what might be the most suspenseful of the five. A closed setting, a group of suspicious characters, and the realisation that the murderer is among them — pure claustrophobic tension.

In Cat Among the Pigeons, a Middle Eastern revolution unexpectedly connects to an English girls’ school. The blend of international intrigue and school mystery works surprisingly well. Hercule Poirot enters later in the story, but once he does, he carefully and brilliantly untangles the puzzle. A classic whodunit with satisfying twists.

Finally, there was The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding — a lighter, festive tale in which Poirot reluctantly accepts a Christmas invitation that turns out to involve more than holiday cheer. Charming, clever, and perfect for a winter evening.

What struck me most is Christie’s extraordinary sense of structure. Every story is technically so well constructed. She plays with expectations, makes you doubt everyone, yet the resolution always feels logical and earned.
