If you want to get to Heaven, you’ve got to raise a little Hell…
Callie Penrose is struggling to find her special purpose in life. Rather than allying with any of the powerful supernatural groups begging to sign her up—the Vatican, the vampires, the shifters, or the Armies of both Heaven and Hell—Callie has been picking fights with all of them.
But when she’s abducted by a Host of Angels, and a Greater Demon begins hunting her through the daytime streets of Kansas City, Callie learns that her past has come back to haunt her.
Thanks to her actions in recent months, Solomon’s Temple has been opened, and the estate sale is on a first-come, first-served basis.
To win her birthright, Callie is going to need Cain’s help. Even then, she’s going to have to cut some corners, cross some lines, to take a bite out of an apple…

Now, let's talk about this specimen of a man named Shayne...
Shayne Silvers writes the "Nate Temple Series" which features a foul-mouthed, flawed, young wizard with a chip on his shoulder attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know and fear from our childhood bedtime stories.
Nate's been known to suckerpunch an Angel, cow-tip the Minotaur, and steal Death's horse in order to prove his point. His utter disregard for consequences and self-preservation will have you laughing and cringing on the edge of your seat.
But he has a lot to learn. Namely, how not to be so big of an A-Hole.
Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and enjoys conversing about anything Marvel, Magical, or Mythological. You might find him writing in a coffee shop near you, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso.
I hate it when he breaks the status quo and treats it like just another day at the office.
The sixth installment of this book can't come soon enough, because this one managed to up-end the scales again only to drag them right back to where they were with almost none of the consequences, but all the gravitas remaining as if they had. Callie Penrose has become adrift in her own life, her own soul and her own existence, and its become apparent to all those watching her that she is becoming all the more dangerous for it, moreso for her lack of direction.
This book takes some of the introspective exploration Callie has indulged in previously to rather phenomenal levels, but instead of hashing it out purely in her own brain, her exploration is dragged out in the tangible sense, as the further she explores and discovers, the more in turn she leaves of herself behind. For every question answered, a new one is asked, and everything she leaves behind awaits her ahead as she tries to put a name to herself in more than just words or thoughts. If that sounds confusing, it is, but the writing for it is structured to the extent that it makes sense with how it plays out.
Most importantly though it shows Callie Penrose has a destiny, but what she does with it and how will make it anything but destined. Her pieces are falling closer and closer into place, and for all one might consider of her position being subordinate to the longer established Nate Temple simply for running longer, her position in that world as a whole might not be so obviously defined. And time is marching on without respite for both of them.
The scale of this novel is more narrowly focused, but the magnitude of it has long standing, far reaching effects for Callie Penrose going forward. The action is still present, but in line with the themes of the story the battles have more impact symbolically than they do tangibly. And while there are still glaringly huge answers dangled like a steak just out of reach of the lions, the pacing of their unveiling versus the abruptness of the questions bearing them is still played out to meticulous precision.
Overall the book the manages to warp the status quo by breaking it entirely and then setting it right back again, which should only stand to reason with this author at this point.
Though minus one star for that downright insulting brush-over of what should have been a huge revelation realized in a single instant upon hearing of it. From a bloody Archangel no less.
Shayne is the master of blending Epic Legends and fiction. I thought the trip to Fae and the underworld Nate went on was crazy..... Nope! Not even close to the quest Callie and Cain go on. Talk about down the rabbit hole or take the blue pill Or red pill. This book takes you for a Matrix type ride. It will have you laughing, crying, yelling and laughing so hard you cry again. Then you asking yourself why didn't I take the blue pill. Lol Trust me it will all make sense after you read this amazing, crazy, brilliant, hilarious, and heart pounding book.
Lots of action on this quest with a few different goals including an existential one with which most can relate. I think the main reason for Callie to be on this quest was simply seasoning. Not until a person has lived through difficulties (e.g. battles or quests) can she truly appreciate the simple things in life. That is something else with which I can identify. I need the next book yesterday...but I appreciated and enjoyed this one.
5 stars again to Mr Silvers! This is brilliant, reading about the doors and how Callie went through, what she learned and felt. She was raw in this book and she was great. The pages kept turning, couldn't put it down!
Callie Penrose has been a character both in her own novels and along with Nate and Quinn. Until now, though, we really didn't understand the inner workings of Callie's mind and what drives her. This book is an in depth look into the soul of the White Rose. Where she came from, how she got to where she is now. The quest brings out the good and bad as resides in every soul and helps her to learn who she wants to be. What is more important? Knowledge without emotion or the ups and downs of caring about your fellow man? Callie has questions that need answering, and choices that need to be made. And where better to look than in King Solomon's Temple, who as it turns out is her ancestor?
This is a wonderful interlude giving us insight into the character of Callie Penrose. And true to Shayne Silvers form, leaves us waiting impatiently for his next installment when the story of Callie and her involvement in Temple-Verse continues.
I received this book as part of an advanced reader group, but as always, I liked it enough to go buy my own! These are all my own opinions and given freely.
As always, Very Well Done, Shayne Silvers, Very Well Done indeed!
I don't how how Shayne Silvers writes three or more books a year, juggles all his different characters and plot lines, deals with the aggravations of self-publishing, conventions and fandom in general, but thank god he does. I don't remember exactly where I entered the Templeverse or quite how I discovered it in the first place (Bookbub, maybe? I'm just not sure), but from the moment I first climbed on-board, it's been a journey well-worth taking. With Sinner, the fifth book in the Callie Penrose series, Silvers ups the stakes for Callie in so many ways, most of them with far-reaching consequences, not just for her, but for all her friends and allies as well. Silvers doubles down this time on the possible ramifications of Callie's angelic heritage and what that means for her as a sorceror and as a human being and begins toying with the question of just how far the answers to these questions may take our hero from her friends and support group, most especially Nate Temple, with whom she's been inching her way toward a relationship with in a manner that is the absolute textbook definition of "slow-burning." Callie is such a likable and sympathetic character and Silvers' prose crackles with such excitement and wit that it almost doesn't matter what the story is, because the world is so enjoyable. Pay attention, however, there are several surprises here that will undoubtedly carry over for many books to come and push The White Rose and her allies into new and greater dangers ahead.
Callie's story starts out as she attends a fancy gathering for the rich and famous monsters of Kansas City, her town. Of course nothing so simple as a party she attends can end without something going very very wrong. Callie is one tough, gifted and dangerous woman who seems to have set the monsters of KC teeth on edge. Helping the vampires of her city was the reason for the party, but some heavenly hosts decided to crash it. Literally!! Callie is no stranger to dealing with angels and the visit shook her to her core. Cain, the first murderer, and Callie set off on a quest to find Solomon's Temple. Callie knows she is a descendant of the great and wise King Solomon. Trying to find the temple takes the story into many dark, sad, deadly and very dangerous places. Nothing is as it seems as they must go through "doors" to reach each new level in the quest. Much is found, but much is lost too. The story moves smoothly. Readers are given a shocking revelation at the end of the story! So beware! Another gripping story from Shayne Silvers! I highly recommend all his books! He is one amazing writer! I love this book! I love Shayne Silvers. I read Templeverse books in one sitting. They are worth your time. You will not be disappointed. I go through what these characters go through (other than having magic). I feel what they feel. You wouldn't think that this book would make you cry and then make you laugh but it does. It also made me feel a little bit guilty because I was raised in a religious household and this book just stomps all over everything that I believe in. I have to make myself say that this is just entertainment and then I can enjoy it. After that then I can honestly say that this is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. Callie says some amazing things in this book. I love the fact that she likes Nate and wants to be with him. I love the fact that she won't be with him until she is able to meet him as his equal. It's beautiful. Hurry up Shayne. We are all ready for another Templeverse book today! This would be my choice for the Good Reads awards! All the Templeverse books would.
If you're just browsing for a book that might interest you and you haven't already discovered Shayne Silver's "Templeverse" (including the Phantom Queen novels with Cameron O'Connell), I highly recommend them. Go on back and start at the beginning. You won't regret it! I am not going to give a synopsis of the book in my review. As usual it was fantastic. In "Sinner" Callie finds more depth of character and it's an emotional ride. We take the journey with her in this story as she goes through what amounts to an emotional and fundamental metamorphosis in which she becomes a more complex character. In hindsight I think this was necessary if she is to interact as a significant character within Nate's story as he has become so much more than he was both in power and complexity and for Callie and Nate's relationship to develop and for Callie to have any impact going forward she needed to step it up. There is so much to absorb I think I'll be reading it again soon to make sure I haven't missed anything.
I have loved all of Shayne Silvers’ prior books and I think I’ve read them all. No surprise then either that I was looking forward to Sinner: Feathers and Fire Book 5 orbthet I totally enjoyed it. Callie Penrose is a fantastically wonderful kick-a** and take no prisoners sort of leading lady, my favorite kind of character, and this book’s wonderful plot (well summarized in the publisher’s blurb) is perfectly drawn and written. Added to s fantastic supporting cast and the result is total enjoyment. A simple enough formula in some ways, but one that takes an author of great talent to be able to properly execute. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.
This far into the Templeverse series, you know exactly what you are going to get, and yes, you get that with this book. Callie has some choices to make, and wow does she make them! To do this, she goes on a deadly quest with Cain by her side. Will they both make it out alive, and will Callie make the right decisions? You will, of course, have to read this book to find out the answers. As always, this book was well-written, action-packed, and convoluted in a good way. And the end had me desperate for the next book. What can I say? Great writing/plotting/characters make a great book, just what I always expect from this author! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.
This book does not have as many hilarious moments as some others in the various series set in the Temple Universe. There’s hardly any snark, for example. But I think that’s on purpose. This is a more serious book. Callie is searching for more clues to her past and deciding what she wants for her future.
Callie is invited – or maybe lured is a more accurate word – on a quest to find Soloman’s Temple. And she takes Cain with her. It seems they have become siblings, by choice.
Speaking of… This quest is all about choices for both of them. They are told that there are no right or wrong choices along their way. But each choice comes with consequences; consequences that will affect who they are and how they live out the rest of their lives.
I grieve every time I finish one of Shayne Silver's creations! For days...I want to go back to the written and created world so many of us have shared by this guy! I have been tossed around in my own head so many times I am deliriously, giddy and as of yet ..not quite myself. But that's what great books and authors are all about right? Take a wild trip of raw power, self-discovery and adventure with Callie Penrose and her companions. Angels, demons, vampires, a flying alicorn, the legendary Dorian Gray, hunky-bunky Nate Temple and her ever illusive great, great, etc etc..grandfather, King Solomon. Does she love them more than her new found powers? Or will she meet her Last Breath? You'll find out.... I highly recommend! Well done ..Shayne Silvers!
This book is my favorite in the Feathers and Fire series! Callie grows so much in this book. As all good books, art imitates life and Shayne captures that perfectly with Callie trying to answer some important questions about herself. Then we have Cain and Michael (yes, THAT Michael). We see masks, scars and new family develop. I laughed, cried and cussed like a sailor.
It is well written. It is a bit different than the previous books. It's all about Callie and Cain.
Readers, be ready to want to track down our favorite author and demand either "the rest of the book" or the next installment "Black Sheep". Why? The ending is a doozy!!!!
Since I'm not a writer, I feel at such a disadvantage as to describing just how wonderful and amazing this whole series is to read. Every volume has magic, paranormal characters, action, adventure, humor, and addictive qualities that will mesmerize the reader. Truly an epic series that one should read in order, and know that you should never pass on a Shayne Silvers book. My complaint is always the same, waiting for the next book is painful and the torture doesn't stop until the next volume is released. I'm so lucky to have voluntarily read an ARC, and this is my honest review
Sinner is an incredible story! I am going to have to re-read it again, and perhaps even again after that, to be sure that I have caught all of the nuances and possibilities laid out in this book. Yes, it ends in a cliffhanger, but the story is so big that it will take two books to bring it under control.
I have a sneaky suspicion about Nate' s second Horseman, but only time will tell. I recommend Sinner highly and hope that the sequel will be published soon. Silver's track record is that it won't be too long in coming.
Solid 5 star rating. Callie's adventures in this installment was amazing. I have a newfound love for Cain. The author created an installment to the series that will keep you up reading until your kindle drops on your face then have you continue the next day just so you can finish it. Yes I thought it was that good. So far I've loved every book to this series and cannot wait until the next one. That ending...wow! Also can't wait until she releases this series in a box set.
This may be my absolute favorite of all Shayne’s books. There are so many twists and turns to this story you may want to buckle up first, and maybe even get some Dramamine. Callie shows up in full force and has plans to take some people along with her on this journey.
We get to see Callie grow as a person and grow in her personal relationships. Her journey in this story really shows all of the things in life she has had to overcome, as well as the last obstacles in her way of realizing her true destiny. I 100% recommend this book.
Callie goes on a Quest worthy of a knight of the Round Table to discover Power, Knowledge and to what actually motivates and defines her. Her Revelations are both intimate and cosmic, personally profound and historically shattering. Power without Knowledge isn’t as strong as it should be, and Knowledge is more Powerful then it seems. Shayne Silvers most in-depth character work yet, and as usual, better then his previous work. He really is a dealer of addictive word construction
Shayne Silvers has proven his mastery of storytelling once again! Callie is out to rediscover herself and her purpose, and what a journey it becomes! From organizing soirées for the Freaks in charge of KC, to stumbling upon magical fountains with killer guardians, Callie’s quest will change everything you thought you knew about her past and open up a million new possibilities for her future....
Wow. What a ride. So much happened. We kind of got answers, but honestly, I think more questions. A lot did happen, but no resolution to much at all. I still enjoyed it, though. And I love Callie, so.. Am still looking forward to more Nate and Callie. And more forward momentum to the story. Right now it just seems at a stand still. So hard waiting for the next. I mean, that ending.....
A fundamental question to understanding our own nature, wrapped in a magnificently crafted prose. The questions asked, and answered, by Mr. Silvers writing grow deeper and span further with every book he writes. I can't help but wonder if I could ever be as strong as these people, were I to take a few steps in their shoes.
Cliffhanger, OMG. OKAY So I Love the series, and Shayne Silvers Nate temple series as well. I do find my self skipping pages because of the back and forth of conversations between characters then an explanation of a memory the characters starts to have then it goes back to present time of their conversation. Other than that the series is so good, I am waiting for Callie and Nate to finally have a series together or more romance on their end.
This was not my favourite of the Templeverse series and sub-series, however it was a great insight into Callie's inner self. You really have to stick with this book as it is quite complex, there is a lot going on. One of the things I felt was missing was the humour found in previous books, although to be fair as I said this is a real test for Callie and she is losing herself as she follows her quest so maybe difficult to bring humour into it.
The Templeverse has never been a simple place and it didn't become any less complicated in this most recent installment. Callie embarked, somewhat against her will, on a quest for answers, but even after the wild ride of her adventures, it's anybody's guess what she actually learned. The one thing that seems for certain is that she narrowly dodged an epic bullet and wound up on the right path. Only time will tell what that actually means.
I love Nate, but let's be honest, as a women having a character like Callie to relate to is incredible. She is so perfectly flawed and yet, strong and intelligent. Those she surrounds herself with are so varied in personality that I am never sure who is good, evil or otherwise just freak. This book was nonstop action, and opened up another facet of Callie.
