"This is a story I will definitely read again and again. It is one of the most touching, yet entertaining stories I have read this year." Charissa from Joy in the Moments ★★★★★ I have a famous secret, but it's not the biggest one I keep. From an outside view, my life would be the definition of boring. I'm married to a landscaper, albeit a very attractive one, I drive an old cheap car, and I write articles for an online magazine. So, maybe I've been a constant fixture on the New York Times Best Sellers list for the last few years, but that secret is locked safely in my attic. Here's a word of advice. If you want to keep a secret, don't tease your mother-in-law about what's in that attic, especially when her life goal is to save her son from you. Now that my famous secret is out, past acquaintances willing to do anything to get their own fifteen minutes of fame are lying to the media about me. But my biggest problem isn't the lies in the press, it's the truth I'm forced to face. The secret I've kept from everyone, even my husband, the man I love, the first person who made me feel like I belonged somewhere. Now I have no other choice but to tell the truth and face my biggest fear, that Peter and I were never meant to be together and my secrets could take him away too.
Jennifer Peel is the mother of three amazing kiddos. Wife to her one and only for the past twenty-two years. Lover of late night talks, beach vacations, the mountains, pink bubble gum ice cream, tours of model homes, and southern living. She can frequently be found with her laptop on, fingers typing away, indulging in chocolate milk, and writing out the stories that are constantly swirling through her head.
I love Jennifer Peel's story telling . I adored everything about Delanie's character. She was sweet and charming, and resilient despite the things that had happened to her in her past. I loved her spunk, her quips and her love for humanity; and how she truly tried to make the world a better place for those who had seen all the ugliness life had to offer. Delanie endured all the endless hate and criticism her mother in law Sarah could dish out towards her, and Delanie's husband Peter was such a beta wuss, just letting Delanie take all the shit his mother flung her direction. Despite my handful of issues I had with this story, I adored the writing and the lovely storytelling. I could not put this baby down and even got a bit misty in parts towards the ending. ["br"]>["br"]>
Delanie had the most unusual childhood. All she ever wanted was to fit in... to feel loved... to live a normal life. But with Cat and Ron as parents, that would never happen. It wasn't until she met Peter that she ever felt love. But with him being a Priest, they would never be able to act on their love for each other.
Peter had never met anyone like Delanie before. There was just something about her that drew him in and had him questioning what he wanted out of life. They tried to stay apart but the heart wants what the heart wants. Peter made the decision to leave the Priesthood and build a life with Delanie. He didn't make that decision lightly. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was his life.
For the last four years they have lived in bliss. Their love for each other growing stronger every day. The only thing that could make it better would be if Peter's mom, Sarah, liked Delanie. But she has made it painfully clear every chance she gets that she strongly disagrees with their marriage. It seems she'll stop at nothing to tear them apart.
But their blissful life is about to be turned upside down. Who would have ever thought that a last minute party at Delanie and Peter's house thrown together by his mother would reveal a secret that they had been keeping from their family. The more they try to keep everything under control, the more secrets arise. Delanie and Peter are filled with hurt, frustration, doubt, anger and defeat. They don't know who to trust, who to turn to, or where they go from here. It seems like the entire world is against them.
When Delanie is hit with the ultimate betrayal, she'll have to decide what she really wants. She knows that Peter would be better off without her but just thinking about letting him go breaks her heart and leaves her feeling like a shell of a person. But when she receives the news that her and Peter have been longing for, she doesn't know if she could ever give him up.
Delanie may not know this, but she should never under estimate a man in love. Peter may be a putz at times and might not always know the right things to say but he will fight tooth and nail to keep her in his life. He's determined to show her exactly where she belongs... show her how much he truly loves her... and show her that, when it comes to the two of them, even though the road is wrought with trials, tribulations and setbacks, love will always, always conquer all.
*dreamy sigh*
WOW! All I can say is the feels! Oh my gosh you guys! The feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels! I just can't even right now! Delanie and Peter... *sigh* Their story is SO real... SO raw... SO heart-achingly beautiful! To love each other so fiercely, so strongly, I can't even begin to describe it to you! You just HAVE to read this book! But fair warning... make sure you have a lot of tissues close by! You will most definitely need them!
I am LOVING this series! It is SO good! Both books have stayed with me long after I finish them... and I LOVE it when that happens! I can't WAIT for James and Avery's book!
Ms. Peel has definitely done it again! She's an AMAZING author! Just when I think I have found my favorite of hers, she releases a new book. I don't think I'll ever be able to pick a favorite of hers. They just keep getting better and better!
And can we please take a moment to appreciate this casting?! I saw these two from the very first chapter! I LOVE it when that happens! They're perfect in my opinion! What do you think?!
Make me ugly cry, why don't you Jennifer Peel! The character of Delanie is someone I cannot relate to at all, but that doesn't matter, because the author does such a skillful job of getting me in her head and feeling her emotions and understanding why she is the way she is. The story begins four years into her marriage, and she's living in a kind of oasis with her perfect husband. Her life before Peter was complicated and intense, and her life after her secrets begin to unravel is also complicated and intense, but now her relationship has to weather the storm. I appreciated the way the author built the backstory and let us get to know and like Delanie, Peter, and his family (at least certain members) before unleashing the real angst. The mother-in-law drama in the first part of the book is just a warm up. I'm doing my best to not reveal any spoilers while still persuading you to read this compelling book! Just know that by the end I was streaming healing tears as the story made me think about circumstances in my own life... but I did far more laughing than crying while reading the book overall. I loved the way Delanie and the other characters are real and flawed, accepting of themselves but also trying to improve. Delanie's individual sense of humor came across in her voice and I enjoyed more of Sam from the previous book in the series, The Sidelined Wife, who is also pretty funny. The books don't have to be read in order but I was glad I did and I highly recommend reading both!
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Amazing! ====================== I liked the first book, but this one was much better. In the previous book we already had a glimpse of the life of the couple and how our heroine was rejected by the hero's mother and family. The men of the family are dominated by the matriarch who is a bitch. And an infernal mother-in-law who's going to be the demon cake's cherry. Bitch! I liked the hero, he is cute and very passionate. Our hero was a priest and gave up when he fell in love with our heroine. He was torn between his mission in faith in God and his mission as husband. But he chose love. Our heroine has had a neglected childhood and a past that she is not very proud of. But she has become a strong woman and worthy of the hero's love, but she becomes insecure thinking he made the wrong choice and will regret it. Now our heroine is a writer and works under a pen name to preserve her and her husband's privacy. Both like to live frugally and to make charity with their money. All the emotions and tears. Have some paper tissue on hand to wipe away the tears. I recommend!
Jennifer has done it again. I'm extremely grateful daylight savings time ended Saturday night. I was still awake and reading when the clocks turned back an hour at 2 am. That extra hour of reading time saved me from being completely exhausted on Sunday because this was a book I couldn't put down!
I loved these characters. Can't wait for the next book in this series!
Content: Mild language, closed-door implied sex between a married couple, some innuendo
Oh, my stars, Jennifer Peel! Way to make me cry my eyes out! I'm not a big crier, but this author tapped right into my very emotional week and knew exactly what heartstrings to pull and tug. Perfection!
Delanie is so opposite from Peter, yet they mesh better than peanut butter and jelly. Their palpable chemistry is so yummy and I loved their sacrifices and united front. Of course, every couple weathers at least one hurricane and Delanie and Peter aren't exempt. This author does an incredible job of enchanting the reader and drawing them completely into the story. There are some hard things in these pages, I'm not going to lie, but I rooted and cheered for the ending that I wanted and it wasn't quite what I expected.
It takes talent to bring characters to life in a way like this. I couldn't get enough; I couldn't put it down; and I didn't want to let this story and these people go. The emotions are high and intense and the secrets are massive, but the strong friendships and relationships mean everything. I want friends like these!
My final take on The Secretive Wife is to stop, drop everything, and clear your schedule because this amazing story needs to be read right away.
Content: moderate romance (kissing, innuendo, closed door and implied premarital sex); mild language
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars!! If you've read The Sidelined Wife (if you haven't read it you really should) you already know that Peter's mother, Sarah, does not like Delanie or approve of Peter and Delanie's marriage. Peter used to be a priest, and she feels Delanie led Peter astray from his true calling. Delanie's nose stud and arm tattoo don't help either.
Delanie and Peter have a tightly guarded secret that no one (friends or family) knows about. When Sarah talks them into using their new home to host a wedding reception for Peter's sister Sam and her new husband Reed, she betrays their trust by invading their privacy in the worst possible way, and their closely guarded secret is suddenly out there for all the world to know. In less than a day Delanie and Peter's almost idyllic life is shattered and they have to deal with the ramifications of his mother's actions--paparazzi, tabloids, media, and lies being told by people who want some time in the spotlight, no matter how fleeting it may be.
Just when you think it can't get any worse for this couple who are so deeply in love, Delanie has one last secret that even Peter doesn't know about. Will they be able to get through this and come out on the other side?
The way Jennifer Peel writes her characters is one reason she's one of my favorite contemporary romance authors. I immediately get sucked into her character's stories. Every. Single. Time. I knew from friends who'd already read this book that there would be drama and heartbreak, but I had no idea how this book would make me feel. It's been a couple of weeks since I finished it, and I still see red when I think of what Peter's mother did to them. She went from being mean and dismissive toward Delanie to doing something that I consider to be hateful and almost vindictive. As much as she claims to love her son Peter, she wasn't thinking about what her actions would do to him. I still feel that she should have been punished more than she was.
I can't really relate to Delanie's character but I still felt for her through all the heartache she went through. Delanie deserved respect from her mother-in-law if only because Sarah's son loved her. It took Peter far too long--4 years--to stand up to his mother (and grandmother) about how they treated the woman he loved.
I liked that the book is told in Delanie's voice so we hear all her thoughts and how she perceives things. She has a wicked sense of humor. I loved hearing about Sam and how she was doing and looking forward to reading Avery and James' story.
This book contains mild language, closed-door implied sex between a married couple, some innuendo.
Hang on to your heart with this one friends, because Jennifer Peel once again delivers an emotionally gripping story of love, loss and forgiveness that you will not be able to let go of. I am, even days later, still fully entrenched in the world of Delany and Peter.
This story is told in the first person and Delany's whirling emotions became mine so quickly. She is witty, smart and handles difficult situations with humor and (most of the time) grace. I really love her. And Peter? Yeah. He's a rock star right along with Delany.
This story was like a roller coaster of emotions. The highs are high, the lows are low. By the end of the book your hair will be a mess, your eyes will be watering and your heart will be pounding but you'll want to go right back and start it all over again. That's how I felt. I love books that make me feel something, with characters that I cannot help but root for. That's why I am such a fan of Jennifer Peel's books. She always delivers this. Always.
My best recommendation? Get this book. Grab a fan and some tissues. You will need them both.
This is the second book in this series but each book can stand alone. You might be happier if you read the books in order though. :)
Content: Some innuendo and talk of intimate relations between a married couple with no details but it is a married couple so you know that sexual relations are a part of their marriage. Mild swearing.
- I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I liked this a lot and am still giving it 4 stars, but the couple as a whole didn't resonate as much as Reed and Sam from The Sidelined Wife.
I read how the character all thought the H was absolutely perfect, but felt it was more tell than show. The couple were just missing something which was sad as she was a headstrong, famous writer and he's a Catholic ex-priest who gave up the priesthood for her. Don't get me wrong, he does all the right stuff, but I just didn't feel the connection as much as I would have liked.
Essential premise of the story is that the author is a level of popularity like JK Rowling in the 90s or...can't think of anyone recently. She writes under a pseudonym and she and her husband are hardcore when it comes to protecting her privacy.
Enter Sarah, the Muhther from Hell and destined to abide there. She's nosy, presumptuous, manipulative, condescending and spiteful. She gives Margaret Way's mothers a run for their money.
Sadly, Sarah, the MIL from hell, doesn't die although she is shunned a little more and a little longer than most meddlers. We can't have everything.
But yay, for having a sequel stand up almost as well as the first. On to The Dear Wife.
This might be my new favorite by Jennifer Peel. Seriously, this book had so much emotion and mystery pulling me deeper into Delanie’s life. Delanie is married to Peter. They were side characters in the first book in this series, The Sidelined Wife (which was super good too). There you figure out that Peter’s mom, Sarah, hates Delanie. More like despises her. It’s sad. In this book, Sarah takes her hate to new levels, making Delanie’s life most miserable when she unearths her secret life as a best-selling novelist of the Hunter Black series that has sold millions and millions of copies around the globe. When the news hits the tabloids and national media, Delanie’s and Peter’s seeming blissful married existence gets shattered by paparazzi and rabid fans and nasty haters wanting their 5 minutes of fame in exchange for spreading lies about her. Delanie’s worst fear—that of losing her husband—is poised on a precipice, ready to happen.
I inhaled this story. It spoke to me. It twisted my heart at times. It moved me deep in my heart. This is a story I will definitely read again and again. It is one of the most touching, yet entertaining stories I have read this year. The characters are phenomenal—so deeply layered and complex…which made them the beautiful part of the story. Delanie and Peter are a fantastic couple—one of my favorites ever!!! I also adored the weaving in of Delanie’s fictional story of Hunter Black and Laine throughout this book. So, so fun! I have nothing but good to say about this book. I disliked NOTHING. It’s amazing!!! I highly recommend this one.
This wasn't your typical romance, since the hero and heroine are already married, but I really enjoyed it. Usually romances where they are married start out with there already being a rift between the couple, either arranged marriages, or marriages that have lost their spark, but that wasn't the case here. They had a great relationship to start and they had to deal with issues as they came up. The author created some really interesting dynamics between the couple, and especially with the extended family. The obstacles were significant enough that I bought into the conflict they created, but they weren't over exaggerated either.
I am so slow at writing a review for this book. I debated about just letting it go and letting my 5* rating speak for itself. But I can't. I have to leave a couple words about how much I loved this book. How much I loved this series! Each one just kept getting better and better. Not necessarily because of the author's writing style, because her style was the same and amazing. But better in the sense that the books just keep building upon each other and the three female protagonists from the books are a part of every story. I loved that. I loved the strength of these women. And I especially loved the strength of their relationships and friendships. How they lifted and helped each other. How they were there no matter what and with no judgement of each other. It was beautiful and just what we all need in our lives. Someone or many someones who are you friends no matter what. They love you, flaws and all! People who don't demand that you are perfect and who love you through your mistakes and your struggles. Friends who will help you when you're down.
I ugly cried and laughed so much in this book. I loved it! Peter and Delanie are such a great couple. They have struggles and differences. But their love for each other help them through those struggles and differences. Lots of love and healing throughout this book and series. There are some characters who you just want to tell off because of the trouble and heartache and frustration that they bring to the story and to characters' lives. But you can't and you just keep hoping that there is some redemption and change for them as well.
I love it so much, I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Jennifer Peel is a favorite author of mine. I love her ability to create these characters who are raw and real and who touch my heart deeply. I think it's because we all see some part of ourselves in her characters. If you are looking for a book that will touch you deeply and help you feel all of the emotions, this is the book (or rather the series-or author).
Content: This book isn't squeaky clean and I would suggest that it is for a mature audience, definitely not teens. There are innuendos scattered throughout about a married couple. There are no detailed love scenes if you're wondering but fade to black scenes between this married couple.
It's a good story. It's a bit long. I was a bit disappointed Peter, after him being so good for Delanie, he really drops the ball when she needs him. He does try to make it up to her and stands by her but I was so sad for her.
I have been waiting patiently for this second book in the More Than A Wife series. Okay, well maybe not patiently. I loved the first book with Sam and Reed. It was such a fun book with endearing characters. I have been waiting with bated breath for book two. This book is about Delanie and Peter. They have such a beautiful and loving relationship. When some trials come their way, does their love stand firm? All, I have to say is this author is amazing. This book is more gritty and emotional than the first, but none the less awesome. We see the characters from the first book and a bit of shenanigans from Mimsy as well. This book will keep you turning the pages to a wonderful and satisfying happily ever after. This is a clean book with some mild curse words. *I was given a copy of this book by the author and this is my honest opinion. I loved it!
I ate this book up faster than a fat kid starved for chocolate. I’m serous. It was addicting, and I couldn’t get enough of it. I fell in love with Peter and Delanie and couldn’t put it down. It was the kind of book that had me thinking about it long after I finished. It’s taken me some time to write a review to try and gather my thoughts enough to write how I feel.
First off, I absolutely loved The Sidelined Wife, the first book in the series. I was excited to get my hands on this newest book, and it was every bit as good- if not better- than the first book. I really liked meeting back up with characters from the first book though, like Sam and Reed. Joseph is now a new favorite, and I can’t wait to read Avery and James’ story.
Delanie is awesome. She is bold, confidant, witty, passionate, kind, selfless, vulnerable, and so real and raw. She reminds me a bit of Cheyenne from the author’s Women of Merryton series. I loved seeing inside her and Peter’s marriage. There were so many toe-curling moments, and yet the author kept it clean and classy.
Peter was oh-so-swoon-worthy. He might come across as perfect, but don’t let it fool you. He is human, and seeing him and Delanie grow from the many difficulties they face was such a joy. I ached and cried for the hard moments- moments where it felt so hopeless. I laughed my head off at many more moments (ahhh- Mimsy!).
I’ve felt kindof lost since finishing this book. The characters feel more like close friends, rather than works of fiction, and ending the book feels like saying goodbye. Good thing I can read it over and over!
To be honest, I was a little afraid of this book when the early reviews mentioned keeping a box of Kleenex close. At the same time, I also knew I could not trust myself to start reading it right before bed, or I would stay up reading all night. Jennifer Peel is that good!
I did not use up a whole box of Kleenex, but I did fall in love with Peter and Delanie. I cheered for them, cried for them, and blushed at their intimate moments (implied, not shown).
My heart ached for Delanie, for her desire to belong, and her fear of not being enough. Despite her insecurities, Delanie was incredibly strong. I loved how she did not step back from her mother-in-laws verbal digs. Delanie might see rough around the edges, but when she is fiercely loyal, even to those who don’t deserve it.
Jennifer Peel has done it again, with a steamily clean romance, a snarky heroine, kooky family members, and a story that will pull you in and leave you fulfilled.
Content: mild language, mild innuendo, sex implied between married couple
First, I must say, Jennifer Peel is one of my all-time favorite sweet-read authors. I love her writing style, I love the emotion and feeling she graces every book with. Her books are always a joy to read.
This story started really slow with a lot of meandering around on its way to setting up the plot. Once it hit, however, it was unputtdownable. I do wish Peter would have to have worked a bit harder for forgiveness but everything else was sigh-worthy wonderful!
Best final words in a book, ever. Spot on perfect.
I’ve read and loved all Peel’s books. This one is no different. The tension builds and builds, and when it breaks it always feels so natural, not manipulative or drawn out at all. The words spoken, the actions and reactions - so humanly perfect and imperfect. With little words of wisdom spread throughout. This book is about fear, and secrets, and what that does to trust. So great, so swoony. She proves that even married people can have a great romance - which is another one of my favorite things about her books. Life and stress doesn’t end when you say I Do, and as a married person I love to read books about choosing to love my choice. Read this, and every other one.
Clean, with references to regular intimacy but only kissing being described on screen.
Oh my heart. Delanie needed lots of hugs to make it through The Secretive Wife. I was glad Sam (from The Sidelined Wife) was there to cheer her on. There were some moments in here that made me want to bawl and ones that I cheered. Oh and the mom and grandmother...there are no. words. none.
Can't wait for book 3 in the series! Love all of Jennifer Peel's books.
Where to begin... I was so excited about this book... I couldn't wait to read it... Now that I've read it, I just feel exhausted... It was long and drawn out, Delanie was ok for the most part, but I just couldn't connect with her... Her and Peter's relationship was ok, no real depth or sizzle... Did we not get more about their sexy times b/c Peter used to be a priest??? I think that would have made things more interesting! LOL... But NOPE... None of that.. Just a bunch of hearsay.... I wish I was more invested in this book and their story but I just wasn't... The whole thing just feels like BLAH to me... The drama, which was predictable... Reading about her books within this book got old for me... I just couldn't connect... I honestly don't think I could read the Avery and James book even if it seem a tiny bit interesting...
When it all comes down to it, I just don't think this series is for me... I gave it a good try...
Wow! Talking about the mother-in-law from hell! Sarah hates her daughter-in-law, Delanie, and disparages her every chance she gets, especially during the weekly family dinner. Delanie has her own style and an awesome talent. For her own reasons, Delanie does not want her artistic identity to be revealed as it could bring harm to a lot of people. James is caught in the middle of his wife and his mother. But of course, selfish Sarah, only cares about herself and what she wants. So she and her sneaky friends snoop through James and Delanie's home and open up "Pandora's Box" and all hell breaks loose! Awesome story!
First, don’t read this unless you’ve read Sidelined Wife first since this is so dependent on that. Second the book was so repetitious that it drove me crazy. I felt like I was reading the same scene over and over. Book one was fun but this book two wasn’t at all.
I did not enjoy this book as much as the first one in the series. I loved the updates on Sam and Reed’s relationship but over all I had that foreboding feeling throughout the book knowing a storm was brewing. Unlike most love stories this couple starts out madly in love, like in your face in-love. It was a little over the top and so was the mother in law and even the grandmother’s characters. It didn’t ring true to me. The author is wonderful writer and the storyline compelled me to continue reading even when I considered putting it aside. The epilogue was sweet and gave me the HEA that I enjoy so much!
Another guilty pleasure book! I enjoyed it so much. This story was told from Delanie’s perspective, the sidelined wife’s sister in law. She felt she had married the perfect man and she herself had secrets she felt she had to hide. She was a loved author but no one knew until her mother in law’s friends exposed her. After that, she was put into a life of being a celebrity, which annoyed her and hurt her marriage. However, the ending was perfect. I will miss Peter and Delanie.

I couldn't put this book down. As soon as I finished the book I had to open it back up and re-read it. I laughed so hard the humour in this book is fantastic. I cried no one writes heart ache like Jennifer ( thank heavens I know she believes in happy endings ) I cheered when everything came together. This story really hit home for me. Well done Jennifer Peel this is my new favorite book.
This starts out a bit confusing as she jumps back and forth between the past, present and the lives of her book characters. Once you get the hang of it you are too deep to want out. Looking forward to more in this series.
This book feels like it was deeply personal for Ms Peel as it follows the challenges facing a writer. Delanie and Peter’s love and struggles were truly fascinating to read and I enjoyed it all.
I’ve abandoned the last five books I’ve started, however, the Secretive Wife completely got me out of my book slump. Jennifer Peel does it again. Loved this book!
After thoroughly enjoying The Sidelined Wife, I knew I had to read the rest of Jennifer Peel’s More Than a Wife series. But what I didn’t know is that after a mostly fun and lighthearted first-in-the-series book, The Secretive Wife would take a turn into solemn and heartbreaking.
Delanie grew up as the only daughter of psychiatrist parents who treated her upbringing like a case study in child rearing. It left her feeling more like a test subject and less like a beloved daughter. As a result, she grew up self-confident and self-sufficient, never needing anyone to be happy with her life, nor letting anyone in. But when she met and fell in love with Peter, a former priest - who told her about his wonderful, loving parents and siblings - she couldn’t wait to be part of a family.
What she got instead was Sarah, a mother-in-law who detested her and was openly hostile. And while she felt loved by the rest of the family, especially her sisters-in-law, no one really stood up for her, either.
The relationship with Sarah is further strained by Peter and Delanie’s secretive behavior around how they were able to afford to buy their large house in an exclusive gated community. Peter works for the family’s gardening/landscaping business, and as far as the family knows, Delanie is a freelance journalist. In reality, she’s the nom de plume behind an exceedingly popular New York Times best-selling seven book series - and staying anonymous is not only what she and Peter want, it’s in her multi-million dollar contract that she remains so.
When her secret is disclosed in a scheming, scandalous betrayal of epic proportions, holes are poked in Delanie’s carefully crafted life and secrets start leaking like a sieve. Everyone from her past is willing to spill some tea, and as the press is apt to do, it’s all twisted and presented in half-truths and outright lies. With things spiraling out of control, it causes Delanie to question everything about her life and puts doubts into Peter’s previous rock-solid relationship with his wife.
This story hit me right in the heart. It’s been a long while since a book had me itching to read it during every spare moment...hoping my son would dawdle on his way to the car after school...scrambling to get in as many pages as I can while dinner is cooking in the oven. I loved this story!
Delanie was such a sympathetic character. Having grown up with cold parents, she was hoping for a warm relationship with Peter’s parents. When she didn’t get that, she held her head high and had the confidence to just do her thing. She knew who she was and didn’t need anyone else to validate her. I admired her spunk and that when her mother-in-law refused to accept her, she dug in her heels and did little things (like being openly affectionate with her husband and claiming to keep racy pictures in the locked attic) to make digs at Sarah. I admired her for hanging in there as long as she did before removing herself from that toxic relationship. But my heart broke that deep down she truly wanted that love and connection you get from family, and instead she was rejected and had to deal with Sarah’s open hostility.
I also really liked Peter. He was in such a difficult position, stuck in a hard spot between his beloved wife and his mother - who was behaving completely out of character from the kind and loving mother he knew growing up. I was so glad to see him stick by Delanie’s side and call his mother out when she crossed the line. But I also kinda liked that he wasn’t perfect and made a big mistake - it’s never fun to read about perfect characters, and made him completely relatable.
I can’t think of a single thing I didn’t thoroughly enjoy about this book. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it kept me on the edge of my seat. I love this series. And that is all.
