When her village is attacked and her friends and family are taken away to be sold as slaves, Alysha Tanner sets out on a quest across the world to track them down and return them home. Along the way, she is aided by the most unlikely of allies - the world's last remaining dragon. But as Alysha searches for her family, others are hunting for both her and her companion, and Alysha will soon find herself swept up into a decades-old conflict, one that could decide the fate of the world itself ...
I enjoyed parts of this book and could tell that there were some solid ideas present throughout the story but felt the execution and pacing left a little to be desired.
Alysha felt a bit like a mary sue throughout the story but honestly, her story was fairly reasonable. Her character didn't really develop in the 450 pages of the book but she remained likable throughout. Her relationship with the Dragon was interesting enough when they were bonded as friends but took a strange turn when they started to become romantically involved. Parts of her story felt a bit like a CW show.
The parts of the book I found myself not liking was anything to do with The Purifier. The idea behind this character is solid but the way he was portrayed made it a struggle to read some of his chapters.
Overall the story was fine if not predictable. The front end of the book took some time to set things up and felt well paced. About 50% through the book it started to feel like the pace sped up a bit too much. The story moved from one location to another without developing the characters and story that we had just left. There seemed to be some minor inconsistencies throughout this and ultimately the ending didn't feel rewarding for me.
I'd recommend this book if you don't mind staple fantasy tropes or YA literature.
A change from the normal Dragon stories which I usually avoid. Good characterisation, heroine unusually bisexual but this was not allowed to overshadow the story. All round an intriguing and entertaining read. A only shame (in a way ) was it ended with a finality, so no follow up likely.
