Ryen Justice lives a quiet existence in Sequim, Washington, running a successful horse farm with his twin brother and sister-in-law. Still, something nameless in him yearns for more.

An old barn on the farm becomes Ryen’s haven where he spends evenings watching the moon and stars. With Halloween approaching, he volunteers to decorate the barn for a party, knowing the job will guarantee him more time alone.

One night as Ryen labors, a man walks out of the woods. Ryen knows he should feel apprehensive, but he is intrigued by the dark-haired stranger who calls himself Kamer. What Ryen doesn’t know is that lurking beneath Kamer's handsome face lies something that could prove dangerous to both Ryen’s body and soul.

While this was a good length for what this is, I really would have liked more. I know Kamer was supposed to be super mysterious, but I really wanted more about him, especially with Ryen's choice. Kamer barely speaks about himself after all.

This had a slight eerie feel, a bit sad and I really liked the barn setting, but then... I lost interest.

Great short story though.

I liked the eerie feel and the air of mystery that surrounded the story.
I also liked the growing romance between the MC's. The story had an almost calming, lulling effect on me, which could've been because of the setting or Kamer, the other MC, who had a bit of a seductive personality, or more like a natural charm. :) And I felt sad for Ryen, how he seemed to suffer from loneliness. I didn't really get an answer however, as to why he didn't leave the farm before if he longed for more.
And it was far too short.

MOONLIGHT was a quick read but it's also sparse on the details. It has a very hazy quality that makes the whole novella feel like it's a dream. I did like the characters and it does end with a vague HEA, but it just needed more to really feel complete.

Turns out there’s more to fear in the Washington State woods than glittery vampires and Native American wolf boys. Ryen is a young man who’s been coasting along, content to live with his twin bother and his best gal pal from school now turned sister-in-law.

When he meets a mysterious stranger watching him near the old barn, curiosity turns to a courtship of sorts though Ryen never thought of himself as gay. But what exactly is the stranger’s deal? And is he to be believed when he tells Ryen that he’s bad for him?

This atmospheric short is all about spinning a romantic tale of mystery and imagination. There is no sex depicted here at all, and yet it has other appeals.

This spooky little short story paints a fun picture and is well written enough to make me curious about the author’s longer works. Perhaps it’s not the best free short I’ve found this year, but it’s certainly in keeping with the season. If you’re up for a spooky Halloween tale, this one’s a fast free-read.

PLEASE READ FIRST MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings (thanks to amazon I had to change it again and 'upgrade' it a little bit.):

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like 'Liberty' from Seth Kann ing,
'Save that he kids' series from EM Leya or
'Jesse's Smile' from Angelique Jurd), it's like
an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books) it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times (most romances where you can enjoy
for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader, but
not really an often reread book

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok) It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

This was a slow burn sweet romantic M.M Supernatural love story

This book is about a young man named Ryen who meets a stranger named Kamen while working to get his and his twin brother's barn fixed up for the annual Halloween costume party . Every night the mysterious Kamen comes out of the forest to talk with Ryen while he works to get the barn in shape for the Halloween party . As Ryen gets too know Kamen better Ryen begins to realize just how much he's began to really look forward to his and Kamen's nightly talks . But than Kamen leaves one day and doesn't come back leaving Ryen confused and not knowing what to make of it . Ryen finds himself unable to cope with the fact that Kamen may never come back and this makes Ryen question just what exactly Kamen has come too mean to him in such a short period of time that they have known each other . But just like Ryen Kamen can not be long without seeing Ryen again although Kamen knows that it would be better for them both if he did . Because Kamen has secret that just may destroy Ryen but despite this they have fallen deeply in love with each other and are willing too risk death for each other . In the end both find what they have been looking for in each other this was a sweet story with a interesting twist . Especially when you find out just what Kamen and his Sister are I bet you get it wrong like me Lol

Moonlight is the first solo work by K Evan Coles I've read and it certainly left me hungry for more. As a bit of an introvert myself, I definitely understood Ryen's need for alone time but I also appreciated how his twin and sister-in-law, though hating to see him alone, understood his need for the peace and quiet even if a bit reluctantly. Pushy family members really tend to grate on me so this element was a definite plus for me. As for the connection between Ryen and Kamer, well let me just say it was deliciously heartwarming. The fun and/or trouble😉 these boys could get up to would make for some very intriguing reading but whether we get more or this is it, you will definitely swipe that last page of Moonlight completely entertained

Completely captivating and surreal

While this book may be short in length, it is by no means short in content or emotion. The author manages to give us an entire world and full characters with their words and I found myself utterly enchanted and captivated by this erithreal story. I love the inclusion of the Turkish words and folklore and the characters progression felt natural. I wasn't expecting such a fully fleshed out story in a short, but that's what the author delivered. Not just a Halloween story, it's really a tale of what happens when you discover that the "things that go bump in the night" are real. Loved it!

Kudos to the author's effort to find something new to say in the very well trodden path of supernatural gay romance.
She also works hard at creating a strange, mysteriously creepy but at the same time lulling atmosphere with the isolated barn clearly at the centre of the story. She is not entirely successful, be it for lack of experience or lack of pages.
The supernatural lover is also a somewhat pale figure, the need to keep him mysterious clearly interfering with characterization.

All in all this is a pleasant read but not everything it could have been.

After having this story sitting in my kindle for a few months, I was pleasantly surprised by this story when I decided to read it today. From the start, the flow of words easily built the setting into perfection and what I also enjoyed was knowing each character enough.

While I enjoyed the story overall, I felt really sad the end (not a bad thing - I love sad/bittersweet stories) ***SPOILERS*** My heart breaks for Myles. I love that we got his pov at the very end. It made for a perfect ending.

lovely but sad story. the attraction between Kamer and Reyn is strong. it is obvious from the start that for the two of them to stay together great sacrifices have to be made. Reyn sacrificing his relationship with his twin was the sad part but the happiness he finds in Kamer is lovely and passionate.

What a wonderful, heartfelt short read. Even though this was a short story, the world building was fantastic and the characters were absolutely perfect. It didn't feel like a short story, which I love. If felt like a fully developed full-length novel because everything was so well thought out. I absolutely loved this one!

This was different to what I thought it would be, even to that I had read before. The tone of it all as well as the cultural aspects slightly enlightening this whole book, made this book even more unique, with its daring taste in all things nonsensical.

But it worked. So I ain’t mad at it.

Awakening

A thoughtful and passion filled story of Ryen and Kamer set in Washington. The plot tracks the encounter when Kamer steps out of the wood as Ryen prepares for Halloween. Beautiful descriptions of the horse ranch and the feelings from Ryen.

Ghostly

Well written story about a restless lonely guy trying to find himself. Then a stranger shows up and clarity seems to begin. But... The afterword helps explain some things, still it's a rich multifaceted story (fantasy?)!

A perfect read for Halloween. I love how the author used an old myth and creatively wove it into a sweet romance while still giving us the chills we crave.

A mostly sweet short story. I never really grew to like Ryen or Kamen due to the lack of length or depth to this story. And the ending left me feeling more sad than satisfied.
