Series read from March to…

Things are really hotting up in this third instalment. Lord Kraus arrives, Princess Kathryn’s husband to be, and he turns out to be a lecherous smelly old man, but political needs mean a wedding to cement his alliance is necessary.
Kat continuously flip flops between rebelling and maybe running away or on some level understanding and agreeing with her mother the Empress.
After her mother had Hansel beaten to cure Kat of her infatuation she almost managed to steer clear of spending time with him, despite her feelings.
Following her argument with the Huntmaster, Witz the wyvernis trying to persuade him that he was at fault and that Kat is not a witch, but unfortunately she bumps into the Huntmaster in the corridors of the castle and the only way she can get away from his violence is by threatening him with her Ravenglass dagger, which she has now learnt responds to her blood.
To try and understand more about all the things happening so quickly in her life , she goes to the castle’s librarian who informs her that all books about Ravenglass and its supposed magic (in which no-one believes in these enlightened times) were pegged from the library many many years previously. However its sis suggested that she read “The Book of Empire” in which all happenings to do with her family have been recorded for generations.
She discovers her father was not the enlightened kind man she thought he was in her experience before he died , and that he was murdered not died of sickness. And most surprising of all she finds out she had an elder brother who was born sickly and did not survive. Piecing together dates in the book she discovers this elder brother was not her father’s child, but from a previous boyfriend her mother had.
Meanwhile the wedding day is approaching very quickly and Kat is still trying to come up with a valid excuse not to marry the loathsome Lord Kraus, but also to save her family’s empire and not be plunged into war.

Very enjoyable and fast paced.

Old secrets are exposed, new secrets begin to be exposed, and Kat’s life becomes more complex!
In The Empress, Kat is provided several new questions about her father, the kingdom, and her future betrothal. She gets no conclusive answers to the questions but begins to grow into her role as the future empress. As Kat’s story progresses through each book it becomes addictive, and this reader has become fully invested in following Kat’s journey to its conclusion hopefully in the very far future. I received an Advance reader copy and chose to provide this review.

Kat learns at the library that her father the emperor was assassinated and gets the impression that he may have been poisoned by her mother. The fact that this was kept from her sows the first seeds of distrust between her and the spymaster wyvern. She is being forced into an arranged political marriage with a disgustingly older leader of a neighbouring state. And she has made an enemy in the person of the Huntmaster who spreads word that she’s a witch. Her childhood friend is punished for spending time with her because he is a commoner.

The Empress is Book #3 in the Ravenglass Chronicles by Jon Crenshaw is a spellbinding, episodic fantasy series that blends tarot-inspired storytelling with a rich coming-of-age journey. Jon Cronshaw crafts a world that feels both intimate and expansive, where magic is woven into the very fabric of the land and every chapter feels like turning over a new card in a mysterious deck.

The symbolism between the tarot cards and this tale have truly hit its mark in my head, finally. I really appreciate the authors notes after each episode. This MC really is stunted in her maturity and is hitting the love/hate button of my emotions. I am glad I don’t have to wait until a release date to get my hands on the next episode!

I enjoyed this one. Kat is growing up and deciding that she needs to act like a women and is starting to understand why. The lord she is to marry is such a pig though. I could not imagine having to marry someone for the sake of the country.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Kat is now putting together some pieces of her past, particularly her parents past. She is left with more questions than answers.

Kat is still struggling with the positron that is bestow on her and the feeling she still has for her friend. This is not the life she wants but what choices will she have.

Merged review:

Kat is struggling with having to do what her mother says by marry a Lord which she despises, getting herself ready to become the empress and to figure out what is going on with her magic. Lots of choices she has to make. Finding out about her father and what is the truth and what is a lie. Will keep you reading till the end. A real page turner.
