Following the phenomenal success of Babar's Yoga for Elephants and Babar's Museum , Larent de Brunhoff's latest, all-new Babar adventure will take children on a world tour they'll never forget!
As Babar said to his children, "We are taking you around the world." And so he does in Babar's World Tour , the latest from the venerable storyteller and artist Laurent de Brunhoff. Our favorite elephant family visits a number of countries around the globe. First stop is Italy where they learn to say, "Buon Giorno! Hello!" After that, its' off to Germany, Spain (where they learn to flamenco dance!), Russia, India, Japan and Thailand (for snorkeling). Then Mexico, the Southwest United States, Egypt, Antarctica, and of course, France (just in time for a fashion show!).
In this adventurous addition to the Babar series, children are introduced to an international array of cities, customs and languages as they learn to say "hello" in each new country. Babar's World Tour is enjoyable and entertaining for armchair travelers of all ages.

Perfect for my son, the world traveler! The transcriptions of the foreign words were sometimes hard to parse. But I suppose, if you don't know the words at all, it's a good thing they are transcribed into "English".
Barbar haluaa viedä perheensä maailman ympäri matkalle - isä tahtoo oikein kunnolla sivistää jälkikasvuaan. Matkan alussa koko perhe tuntuu olevan innostunut oppimaan vieraista kulttuureista, mutta pian alkaa koti-ikävä vaivata perheen pienimpiä...
Hauska tarina! Muutamassa kohdassa lukijaa tuppasi huvittamaan liikaa, lähinnä Babarin oma into matkusteluun ja lasten toiveiden sivuttaminen.
The best part of this book is the phrases in various languages. The list of destinations is interesting: Rome Venice Germany Spain Russia India Japan Thailand Angkor Mexico American Southwest Machu Picchu Egypt (Abu Simbel) Paris Antarctica and of course Celesteville
Oh, please let me come along, Laurent de Brunhoff. I'd like to take your world tour and expand my mind.
What a hoot! Right from the very first para:
"Pack a sweater, a bathing suit, and a pair of pajamas. Wear comfortable shoes," Babar said to his children one morning. "Your mother and I have a surprise for you. We are taking you around the world!"
Oh, and this later quote is sooo true -- at least for a language freak like me:
They thought foreign languages were fun, like singing different songs for different places.
What a new thought to me, and such a wonderful thought it is!
FINALLY...
A surprise ending of pure delight. No spoiler from me, though, haha!
Babar's World Tour / written and illustrated by Laurent de Brunhoff -- New York : Harry N. Abrams, Inc, c2005. (40 pages).
SUMMARY : Babar's family is on a world tour. They visit a number of countries around the globe -- Italy, Germany, Russia, Spain, India, Japan, Thailand, Mexico, America, Egypt, Antarctica, and France. In each place the children learn how to say "hello"in the native language and discover a bit about the local culture.
REVIEW: I have never been a fan of Babar (I don't know why, can't explain it). The book shows many countries as Babar, his wife Celeste, and their four children take a vacation. However, the countries are only seen briefly for a page or two and then off they go to another country. Very fast paced and not enough information.

I remember the Babar books fondly from my childhood. I don't appreciate them nearly so much as an adult, but this was a decent tale. I love that the family made a concerted effort to communicate in the native language of each country they visited, even if just pleasantries.
I do the same and I try to teach our girls the words, although they seem to forget them very easily. The opportunity to travel and see the world in such a grand style is not within our reach, but we travel some together and have been fortunate to live in several different climates and at least two countries. I also bring home a few tasty treats and some books from each country I visit, to try to expose them to a little of what I experience when I travel for my job.
Overall, this was a pleasant and fun story and we enjoyed reading it together.
While I thought the idea behind the book was a good one, some of the countries that were "visited" were completely glossed over. Either address each country visited equally or don't include them in the book.
Pack a sweater , a bathing suit , and a pair of pajamas. The book Babar's World tour is all about Babar and his children go around the world. They learn to talk in many different launguges.
