It is Merry's last Samhain in Dark Root, and Maggie's last chance to convince her older sister to stay. That means everything has to be perfect this Haunted Dark Root festival. But the veil has thinned and both spirits and demons are free to pass between worlds, blurring the line between the living and the dead. When a sacred ring of unfathomable power disappears, Maggie must put aside her personal agenda to find the artifact before the sun sets on Dark Root forever.
This short story was originally written for the Witch or Treat anthology (2017). It is a stand alone short with a few spoilers.
April Aasheim is the second oldest of six children. She spent her early years traveling the western part of the country with her mother and step-father. During this time she met a lot of interesting people and developed a love of 'characters'.
April is married and lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and her cat Boots.
This was another awesome short story that brought depth to the Dark Root series. Aasheim is masterful in imagery as she makes her characters come alive in the pages of all her books. When she describes a setting, you see it, when she describes a smell, a taste, a sensation...you can identify with it. Highly recommend this short story.
I love this book! It gave me an even deeper look at how Dark Root was when the girls were young. April manages to capture my attention with every book about Dark Root.
