Writing is a way of thinking. When I compose poetry, the refining of language, the rhythms and compacted structures and the resultant shaped and cadenced language is a still life that captures an instant of ongoing discovery. Though personal and mysterious, even to me, my writer’s life has thrived in part because of those with whom I share drafts of my work and discussions of the books that we are reading. Thank you to my wife and significantly better half, Candace, and to the primary co-conspirator in my “craft or sullen art,” Mike Green.

Greg Gilbert (MDiv, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is senior pastor at Third Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the author of What Is the Gospel?, James: A 12-Week Study, and Who Is Jesus?, and is the co-author (with Kevin DeYoung) of What Is the Mission of the Church?.
I am so glad Greg Gilbert has put together this collection of his poetry for readers and lovers of poetry to enjoy! His poetry addresses timeless questions with a distinctive voice that playfully juxtaposes classical themes with contemporary details. Each verse's rhythm and the timing of each line and phrase make the reading a musical experience. Gilbert's ability to see the miraculous in the every day and to ask cosmic questions with a comical wink create the magical, mystical occasions of each poem. Whether comparing Lao Tzu and David Byrne, considering a "burnt sky at sunset" or "picking among the litter and leavings" while cleaning the garage, the speaker of these poems is a keen observer. Seeing the world through his lens helps us not only to better understand it, but to love it more.
