The first of four operas to complete Richard Wagner's celebrated Ring Cycle is an epic adventure and fight for power and recognition — and it's one of my favourites.



Das Rheingold, as it is called in its original language, was first performed in 1869 and still surprises with how modern and contemporary many of its ideas feel, while rooted in old German myth. It's considered the prelude to the rest of the epos, which means it's where we get introduced to the setting, the characters, and themes; both in music and narrative.

The story is an ancient one: The Gods, with Wotan as their ruler, want power. Meanwhile we've got the dwarves who challenge their claims, especially the power-hungry Alberich. And don't forget about the giants, who build a fortress for the Gods and now want their pay or the Rhinemaidens who protect a treasure so valuable, that it might cause trouble...

The story is also a tricky one: it's hard to tell who's the good and who's the bad one here. Wotan, the God, applies tactics and methods no less cruel than the supposedly bad guy Alberich here. He is willing to let the giants hold Freia ransom and only kind of minds because she's the guardian of the golden apples that keep the Gods young and beautiful. By the way, my favourite character by far is Loge, a semi-God of fire, who's cunning and while manipulative, also seems to always be ten steps ahead of everyone else.

Musically, Wagner introduced a lot of things previously unknown in this one: he strayed away from the traditional stylistic devices usually used in operas in form of arias, ensembles and choruses. The music helps putting the story forward as much as the actual singing does and many of the leitmotifs introduced in this one will be picked up again in the following operas of this epos. There are no interludes or breaks and it's a considerably shorter than Wagner's other musical works. I'd actually recommend this as a fun starting point for people wanting to get to know this music better!

Das Nibelungenlied taucht immer wieder in Kreuzworträtseln auf und mich hat es schon arg gewurmt, dass ich so gar nichts darüber weiß & dass das auch das einzige ist was ich darüber weiß. Bin ich jetzt schlauer? Ich glaube nicht. Aber ich hatte eine unglaublich gute Zeit mit dem Hörspiel: es war wirklich mitreißend durch die Kunstkopftechnik. Die Sprecher haben tolle Arbeit geliefert, denn manches hat mich schon gegruselt. Die passende Musik hat für eine tolle Atmosphäre gesorgt. Das Hörspiel werde ich mir definitiv noch einmal anhören, denn ich habe gar nicht alles wirklich mitbekommen, da so viel passiert ist. Gerade der erste der vier Teile hat einen unglaublich guten Eindruck hinterlassen. Er hat mich außerdem auch neugierig auf das eigentliche Buch gemacht, auf dem die Oper basiert. Alles in allem wurde mir so der Zugang zu diesem Stück deutlich erleichtert und ich bin jetzt neugierig geworden mehr zu dem Thema zu recherchieren. Hoffentlich weiß ich dann auch das ein oder andere für das nächste Kreuzworträtsel 😁

Siegfried der Drachentöter, Brünnhilde, die Walküren und Hagen – viele dieser Namen sind mir ein Begriff, aber die ganze Geschichte dahinter war mir nicht bekannt. Perfekt also, dass Regine Ahrem Wagners Opernzyklus (wiederum basierend auf der skandinavischen Nibelungensage und dem mittelalterlichen Nibelungenlied) für ein heutiges Publikum in moderne Sprache übersetzt und diese Hörspieladaption ins Leben gerufen hat. Die Produktion ist beeindruckend: tolle Sprecher*innen und gewaltiger Sound, inklusive Wagners epischen Kompositionen. Außerdem wurde das ganze mit der sogenannten Kunstkopftechnik aufgenommen, was bedeutet, dass der Sound (zumindest durch Kopfhörer) nicht nur von rechts und links, sondern auch von oben und unten kommt. Ich kann aus Erfahrung sagen, dass das dazu verleitet, sich unterwegs manchmal irritiert über die Geräusche hinter sich umzudrehen. Der Plot selbst schreitet rasant voran und ist voller Spannung, Intrigen und großen Emotionen. Für Tolkien-Fans dürfte außerdem die eindeutige Inspirationsquelle für den Ring-Mythos interessant sein. Inhaltlich haben mir Teil 1 und 4 am besten gefallen. Siegfried selbst finde ich ein bisschen doof. War sicher nicht das letzte Mal, dass ich mir dieses Hörspielkunstwerk angehört habe.

يفترض أنك فتاة شابة حسناء قاطنة في " كلوندايك " وهي منطقة شمال كندا كانت محط الرجال الباحثين عن الذهب ، والمكان يغص بالذهب النضار ، اذا قنعت بمشاهدة الذهب وتركته حيث هو كما يترك العقلاء أزهار الحديقة فلا يقطفونها مكتفين بمشاهدته ببساطة تامة وبروح نقية والتمتع بلونه وبريقه وقيمته الغالية ، فلن يضار أحد بحصولك على هذه المتعة ، وما دمت في هذه الحالة النفسية ، فان " العصر الذهبي " أو الفردوس الارضي يبقى ويدوم

Sådan lyder det fra ærgerrige Alberik, da han stjæler Rhindøtrenes guld for at smede sig selv en herskerring deraf, og til gengæld må opgive kærligheden…

Men ærlig talt giver det ikke rigtig mening at læse Wagners opera uden musikkens anti-intellektuelle umiddelbarhed. Karaktererne er kedelige og flade uden deres medfølgende lede-motiver; ja egentlig er Niebelungens Ring som tekst ikke meget værd i det hele taget: en ret uskøn og overgjort blanding af alt for højstemt nordisk mytologi, det mest fjollede fra folkeeventyrene og en grundhistorie, der minder om Ringenes Herre fanfiktion….

This opera piece presents Alberich pilfering the gold from the Rhinedaughters and Wotan refusing to pay the giants for the completion of Valhalla Hall. Tyranny, deception, and selfishness are major themes. Families, whose foundation is supposed to be love, now turn on one another--the corruption has spread among the gods, dwarves, and giants.
The gold carries with it extreme power, but its power comes at a cost: in order to forge the gold into a ring, Alberich must renounce love; however, when the ring is taken from him, he curses the ring with death, sorrow, and envy. Their gods' new kingdom, built on a false contract, will not last long, for the gods' era is coming to an end.

Excellent translation by Spenser. Well worth reading and the text does make one understand the poem better . Wotan has a choice of lesser evil but not elimination of evil. He starts in the position of delay action upon delay action. Also he feels limited in knowledge he does not have the complete picture. Loge seems to help and his hindrance is misunderstood help. He also sides with the Rhine and the Rheinmadiens.

Eine nette Adaption des Nibelungenlieds. Es enthält definitiv mehr Fantasy-Elemente als der ursprüngliche Epos. Da das Bühnenstück recht kurz ist, ist es ein Buch für zwischendurch. Wenn man es nicht gelesen hat, hat man aber auch nicht wirklich etwas verpasst. Wer sich für Tolkiens Werke interessiert wird allerdings seinen Spaß habe, da man "Das Rheingold" definitiv als Inspiration für den einen Ring sehen kann.

Critical insight into the music that supports the drama on stage. It was also interesting seeing photographs from many different adaptations. I couldn't have appreciated the opera as well without this guide.
