Title: Magic-Born Dragon
Author: K.N Lee
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Format: Ebook
Pages: 121
Rating: 5
Heat: 2

Thoughts: Um, NO!!! You can't end it there!!!! OMG, that was awesome!!! And yea, there's a cliffhanger, and it's a doozy. But so worth it!! I can't wait to read the next one. So much is happening yet we still have no idea where this is going. Ok, there's maybe some idea where it could go but it's more of just a hint. And it's all just speculation, there are so many different things at play. I adore books like this! There are hints, a few things come to light but it's so unpredictable that you don't want to miss even one word. All I gotta say is "next book... GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!!"

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

The rescue of Rowen was in ruins. The pain from the stab wound radiating with a throbbing sharpness from the literal hole in her hand, up to her shoulder where the blood marred her top and run in rivelets from her hand down her forearm to her elbow. The emotional pain of not knowing what had become of some of her rescuers, even if they'd planned on using her blood for a purpose their own, also fighting for it's portion of her awareness. The wound of course came from one of the crew, and not her latest rescuer from the sailors of the navy ship sent to return her to the farst that was her guilty finding and pending execution; the black dragon. Both the trial judge, who'd she'd ensorceled with the truth and the prince's brother, who'd seemingly believed in her innocence both doing nothing to ensure true justice is served. Executing the wrong person for a crime was just as much a betrayal of Prince Lawson's memory as the act that led to his death. Of course, she knew nothing of the true murderer who was situated as close as could be to the family who'd lost their son.

Her heart ached for Lawson, but she knew she couldn't do anything about ensuring true justice is served for the poisoner who cut short her plans for restoring her family's honour. Regardless of the machinations which led to her betrothal, she had truly loved him and planned for him to be the man who took her maidenhead. As a half-blood dragon, despised by the dragons for the human blight and the magic it brought to her blood, and by the humans who'd otherwise see her magic as a power fortunate enough to be born with if not her blighted dragon blood, she truly wasn't safe anywhere. Situated halfway between two opposing factions she couldn't stay with either without being prejudiced and hunted by both. Only anonymity and remaining under the radar would possibly bestow some measure of safety, but just as Lawson is gone, so too are any preconceived notions of a life she'd wanted to lead. At this point only following the map to the Red Dragon made any sense.

Never before had her tainted heritage been so despised as the reason why she now had no one whom to turn to for safe keeping or passage to a place she could seek to live out a life free from persecution. How close she'd come to achieving the dual goals of serving her family's name and her own true heart. But in less than a few days from Lawson's announcement that he would make public their engagement, he is with death and her own is planned. Had she ultimately been the cause, did she unknowingly contribute to the heir apparent's death by enrapturing his love. There was nothing artificial from her own perception of it. Until she'd ensorceled him into telling his family that he planned announcing their betrothal, she hadn't used any of her magic in capturing his heart. But did this exonerate her, somehow she felt that the answer is not. If the guilt she'd been experiencing since she was first taken into custody was anything to go by, then she is forced to admit her role.

In a similar sense she felt guilt that Elian has lost his ship, the lives of his crew, and potentially including his own. He may have aided in the rescue for purely selfish reasons, but what those like Gavin who'd just been following their captain's orders. That he is quite possibly the unknown father she'd wished to have known only adding to the maelstrom of emotions. For the first time ever her prophetic dreams hadn't been showing her murderer. Instead they appeared to have been showing her the man rescuing her from that certain death. Or perhaps they still had been showing her who was possibly still her murderer, only not at that particular juncture in her death. Confusion reins supreme and the more she thought on her questions the more she felt she was only becoming more so. She now carried the all important map said to lead to the red dragon, emancipated from the table where a knife had been shoved through her hand by the first mermaid who she'd ever met. As first introductions go hers had been the worst, a further sign of the life that had been led into ruins by a stepfather who'd long been the bane of her life

As the complexity of the Dragon Born Trilogy increases so too does the nature of the key's. The nexus' role in the very different lives converging on a same end path, is further delineated as lifelong wishes are granted whilst others are forrver removed. Two figures are situated firmly as the centrepieces to prophecies, espionage and maps lead a range of characters to what they each consider their heart's delights. No two parties want to achieve their goals for the same reason, nor complete the journey in exactly the same manner. What is one's fortune is another's misfortune, whilst for others its ambiguous or of little value either way. Rowen and the Red Dragon are the central figures: one a prize, the other a key. Just who is what may not be what the chasers think. Something all are willing to kill over creates in the key a nexus around which other characters are pushed and pulled, facilitated and halted. Multiple prophets provided clues and misdirection, often at the behest of background figures looking to manipulate the playing field so that others do the bulk of the heavy lifting, whilst they serk to be the only ones reaping any rewards. The deadliest act from the shadows whilst the rest play out in the open.

K.N. Lee has woven an intricate puzzle of various webs seeking to trap the flies upon which to be fed. One centrepiece undoubtedly knows why they're coveted, whilst the other only truly knows their own covetous. With the game now much more firmly defined, along with the bulk of key figures, the final installment will be the actions and consequences that cause the houses of cards to fall. A wind ranging from a slight breeze all the way to a tornado has begun to blow. It'll show in the final book for whom the right cards will fall. If the early prophecy of one of the prophets introduced in book one, now reconfirmed in book two is anything to go by, then the clearest picture of possible outcomes is the flood of blood from the dying and dead that bathes the field in red for as far as the eye can see.

A tempest literally begins throughout the lands on the road to the treasure, creating an atmosphere that is a good analogy for the games being played. With so many patrons with their hands in the pot, no single prediction will be safe until the final endeavours and manipulations have had their chances to take place. Like a game of chess its necessary to see which pawns will fall and who has the greatest capacity to see the game as it stands in future steps. Even still, many will likely be unreliable unless they knew the way those under pressure will rise or fall to the challenge. Many have placed bets and banked on what they know of the twenty-something Rowan whose passions and full range of abilities are still being realised. This young woman has strength and fortitude in spades and if anything has been made concrete, if it wasn't already so, its that she's learnt to barely trust herself let alone any others. With the wisdom to know the differences in the times when its advantageous to speak up or keep quiet, her power continues to bloom. The breaking of her trust has led her to keep it close to her heart even when it seems like she's giving it to someone else.

Intriguing and entertaining, the storyline develops at a feverish pace. No events aren't inherently linked in some way to the plot unfolding. Further still, the imagery, character and world construction aren't lacking either. There's always that fine line between context and needless information. Walking a blistered mile in Rowan's shoes makes her plight the easiest to empathise with and to support to its hopeful conclusion. But there's still the timely changes in points of view that beckon sympathies for what other characters are hoping to achieve. With the exception of a few, there's the naturally occurring good and bad in nearly everyone. This makes the grey bigger whilst reducing the black and white. Even if you have a favourite determined by your own nature and preferences, its impossible to not at least understand where others are coming from, or hoping that some of their goals succeed while others fail. We've hit the next perfect place for a recess that'll allow the cliffhanger to simmer before the final act is delivered. Its not always possible to reach a conclusion that is still awaiting whilst its temporary conduit keeps you happy; but this is realised herein.

Ah! I want more! Everything is starting to come together and the prophecy is unraveling. I was swept away in this second installment and so upset with the cliffhanger ending! I can't wait to read the next one and discover what happens next and uncover the mystery of Rowen and the Red Dragon.

Listened to audio narrated well by Mary Sarah. I liked the characterizations, it made it easy to fall into the story.

Rowen is on the run from the royal navy of Withrae and the pirate Elian Westin. Having been saved by a strange black dragon. She is now dependent on the kindness of strangers.

Prince Rickard may have saved her but his actions are confusing. My understanding is that he loves her and is trying to keep her safe but he treats her very poorly and doesn't explain her situation to her. They had a connection when they first met and she's tried to ignore because her step-father wanted her to gain the crown prince's attention, not the younger son.

Captain Elian Westin might be her father but he only wants her because she is the key to his quest to find the Red Dragon. He can steal souls and make them do his bidding and has a blood thirsty mermaid lover that will do anything for him.

Rowen finds help with a powerful witch and her son that tries to help her with her powers, but they have their own motives for helping her. As she comes into her powers it may put them in even more danger.

There's lots of twists and turns and questions why characters aren't behaving as they had in previous books that will keep you wondering. The ending will leave you hanging but thankfully the next book has already been released.

So, getting three stars is not terrible - but it is a steep fall from the five stars of book one. This book is much slower, the first third of the book extremely so. There is a lot of character development. The only problem is that there is too much inconsistent character development. Now, I know this is K.N.Lee's characterization, and she can do what she wants. But once a character takes on a life of its own, the author is constrained to maintain continuity and integrity of character. Unfortunately, she places a little physical princely romance right in the middle of nowhere. Not sure why. It contradicted the prince's hard fought motives and plans. And once it occurred it was only passingly referred to in subsequent plot development. It was like Lee was torn for just a moment to write a romance novel instead of a fantasy novel. Very disconcerting. Let's hope she gets back on track in book three. If she wants a romance novel, that's fine, but be consistent. Don't throw an out-of-context paragraph or two. We may be heading that way in book three. Fine. Be. Consistent.

I read Magic-Born Dragon, book 2 in the Dragon-Born Series, by K. N. Lee, without having read book 1. Early on in the book, it was a small struggle to get my feet wet with the characters, the story line, as it was apparent that there was back-story that I was missing; however it did not detract from my enjoyment of this book in ANY way. I have read many books from K.N. Lee, and I have loved every one of them - Magic-Born Dragon did not disappoint!
While, character development is what usually sells me on a book, in this book, it was the constantly twisting and turning plot! I did not want to put the book down, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I found myself on the edge of my seat more than once, and I may have chewed off a fingernail or two... (just kidding, I don’t bite my fingernails, but I wanted to!)
Rowen, the Half-Blood Dragon, is the main character and she is amazing! Life has thrown some serious curve-balls at her and she just keeps going! Not knowing who to trust, who is friend or foe, she can only truly rely on herself.
Captain Elian Westin, is one heck of a complex character! Good guy or bad guy? Your guess is as good as mine! You would think that as her father, he would have her best interests at heart, but is he only after her for what she can bring him?
Her past dealings with Prince Rickard have not been pleasant... after all, it appears to be his fault that she has been falsely accused of the murder of Prince Lawson. He is a charmer, but what does he want from her?
Be prepared for glorious magic, fierce battles and the dragons... oh my stars! I had to go right out and buy book 3 in the series and I am certain you will do the same!

Another short novel - this book ends at the 55% mark. Then there is an excerpt from book 3. The story continues to be interesting and exciting as Rowen is saved from Withrae forces by an unknown dragon and then sets out for the human lands to hide. There is a nice balance of narration and dialogue, as well as active fight scenes and more sedate plot development, and the cover art is lovely.

I am still irked, though, by glaringly obvious typos and other errors. E.g., "prophesize" is not a word; the correct word usage in that sentence would be "her ability to prophesy." Also, commas often make a huge difference in the meaning of a sentence: "It didn't matter if his magical map was missing." vs. "It didn't matter, if his magical map was missing." Then there were several places where the action was inconsistent with the narration and dialogue. These issues removed me from the story as I tried to figure out why things didn't make sense, and they really should have been caught by a conscientious editor or beta reader. Despite these issues, I will definitely read the next novel because the story is so compelling.

Read book 1 as a free offer from kobo. I'll admit it's a good short story and well written but unfortunately it is a short story, not a book, not a novel. I burned through it in about 30 minutes and was left dumbfounded at how short it was. Then I found out these short stories were selling for $4CAD(discounted from 12.99!!!). What a scam! I've read short books(solid 8 hour read) better than this for $4.

I've read up to book 5. If all 6 stories were combined in 1 I would call it a solid book or novel worth reading and get 5 stars from me. Otherwise it's just frustrating. I won't be reading book 6 unless I can find a free copy. Just don't care at this point. I won't even look at any other books from this author if this is what she publishes for books.

Can't say I'd recommend this simply because it is so short and you're expected to fork out more $ for another 30 minute read. The value just isn't there.

This story line keeps getting better and better. I loved the second book even more than the first. It has so much drama, suspense, intrigue, and action. It keeps you on your toes and has you trying to guess what is going on. It does in a cliffhanger like the first one but once again it is a fabulous read. It is most definitely worth reading. You find out more about the characters and when you get certain pieces of information it is like OMG did that just happen. Then of this book is the same way. It has you dying for the next one in the series and you just have to find out what happens. I love how this book picks right up after the first one. That is always a plus because you don't feel like you lost any information. I voluntarily review an advanced reader copy of this book.

I really loved reading this book. I was already finding myself comfortable with the characters after reading the first book in this series, but Rowan is still doing her best to hide out after being falsely accused of killing the man that she loved (that also happened to be a prince). I found this edition a gripping read that left me wanting more.

Adventure finds her around every turn in this book, and the ending definitely leaves you wanting to reach for book 3. (Luckily, I'm reading this as part of a 3-book set...so no waiting for me!) I'd recommend this book primarily to people that have already consumed book 1, and love reading stories about dragons and the supernatural.

Well damn, didn't see that ending coming at all.

This poor child has no idea what and why these things are happening to her and I feel it for her. The prophecy is unraveling but I myself want to know NOW what it is! Is it death to everyone like her dreams? Why did her mother leave her father and not tell him about her, is this part of the prophecy? What the heck does Prince Rickard have to do with it? The Red Dragon sure isn't that small little thing that flew into her hands in the dream..lol. and why does the King want her dead so badly, does he know the prophecy, whatever it could be?

This story has me intrigued, I just want to know!!!

All too often when I read a book in a series, I am hugely disappointed by the second book. Not so with this book.....it is great!

Ms. Lee's writing is wonderful, her characters well developed & the story interesting & intriguing. Fast-paced action that keeps you guessing what will happen next make this seem like a very short book....I devoured it in a couple of hours!

The world that Ms. Lee has constructed is wonderful. Magic abounds & I am sure that more & more secrets will be revealed as this series progresses. I look forward to reading more by Ms Lee & more in this series.

Honestly, this infuriated me. Like I said in my review for book one, I honestly don't understand why these books are so short with spurts of character and story development that make you want to keep reading. Whenever the author decides to release the third one, I'm not reading it. There's no reason why book one and book two couldn't have been combined. Not wasting my time anymore on it, I'm not in elementary school and this wasn't labeled as a short story. I like my books to take more than an hour and a half to read.

A fun and easy read. The world created seems amazing - Dragons, Sorcerers, and Humans, Oh my!

I feel like I learned a lot about these characters in this installment of the trilogy which just increased the quality of the reading experience - the fact that I can follow what's going on and I understand how everything connects. So that is cool.

It is still unclear who/what exactly the Red Dragon is. But, we know that it is giant and not the one featured on the cover of the first novella.

Wow! That's about all I can say at the moment as I am blown away by this epic story. There is so much action, adventure, and slight hints of romance. So amazing. This is the 2nd book in this wonderful fantasy series. Ms. Lee has definitely gotten me hooked on this series. I must say I have been devouring this book as each page wants me to hurry up and find out what is going to happen to Rowen, the main character. I do believe that I am enjoying this second installment more than the first one. Kudos to Ms. Lee. Another great story.

I read this book as part of a trilogy. Rowen has escaped her father and is now alone, hurt, and unsure of where to go next. When she is rescued by a woman and her son and allowed to travel with them she is happy to be alive and sheltered. The fact that they are going the direction she wants to go is a bonus. When her father finds her again she is sure she is not going to be alive for long. When help comes from an unexpected source she realizes everything she thought was true was a lie, and her enemy is really her best friend.

I am so glad to be able to jump right into this one since this author did take me away on this trip. Now in the midst of this with Rowen who also keeps us on the edge. Now she is also has her abilities that she uses with makes it even more grand. The characters that are in here with her keep you trapped with the adventure becoming even more intense because of how things are going. By the time I reach the end of this one I am screaming.

What a great job Lee does. This was better than it's prequel. She gives what fantasy lovers crave: sorcery, dragons, intrigue, a map, magic, romance? What's better still, was there aren't "sex placeholders" as I like to call them. Sometimes authors use sex in a story for novel length, to keep up reader interest, or to add an edge. Here, there's just a great storyline of fantasy that's personable, but not overly simple. I can't wait to read #3.

Good novella

This is a very short book two and finished at 83%. Shocking really... so not worth the price. However it is actually a good story but it should have been one book with the first as both are far too short. There is another shocker at the end. Who will Rowan choose. She is literally running for her life at every turn and manipulated by everyone. Need to read book 3 now. Recommended but not happy about the length and because of that Ive only given the book 3 stars.

This is a great continuation of the series. There is still a lot of mystery surrounding who is who, prophecy, and the red dragon. The ending is another epic cliffhanger. There were a few spelling/grammar errors remaining that had me rereading a few sentences for clarity, but nothing major to detract from the story. I am loving this series so far and I am now grabbing the next book and starting to read, I can't seem to put them down! I wish they were longer and all in one book!

Rowan is on the run. Now she’s also on the run from Elian , her father and his crewmates. She joined up with Freyda and her son. The black dragon seems to be her rescuer on more than one occasion and prince Rickard shows up again to her dismay. Will Rowan realize that Rickard is her destiny or will their real destiny prove otherwise in the coming books? Good read

Rowan is in the center of so many plot lines and they all think she should know what is happening and change it. A prophecy heralds the changes. Good characters with varied strengths and personalities. Lots of hidden agendas, secrets, entertaining situations, revelations and danger. Enjoyed book 2 and hope book 3 answers all the questions.

After receiving the correct file from Amazon I was able to enjoy the story that is only getting better. After a doozy of a start Rowen continues to search for the red dragon. She doesn't know why or why everyone else is searching but she continues on. Along the way meeting some interesting people and getting help from unexpected sources. Along with all of this she struggles to understand the man who sh knows is her father.

Great story with characters you are unlikely to forget, some out of love or book respect, others no so good. Lots of action and adventure. I can't wait for more. It really is too bad the release was soured for some because of publishing issues that were not due to the author. Glad it has all been worked out and people are now able to enjoy the rest of the series.

I loved it! It was full of adventure and intrigue. I see all of the characters with their own agenda working for and against poor Rowan. She is a true hero, she is in the dark about so much and everyone expects that she knows everything. She muddles through the best she can and is the innocent one in all of the intrigue. What I never saw coming was the ending. Oh my what an ending, cannot wait for the next book to come out and see where things will go from here.

Oh wow.. insane

This second story clears up some of the confusion and questions your left with In the first one...however is also leaves you with some more questions.

I'm really enjoying this tale and can't wait for more.

It's not your typical dragon shifter story and it's not just some romance story either. There's so many different and unexpected things

Book 2 MAGIC-BORN DRAGON by K.N. Lee ended way too quickly!= This is this is the second book in this series.. I love just about all books with magic woven in the tale.

Dragon, sorcerers, witches and other things that go bump during the night.
This author has my interest and I will be looking to see what else is available.
