John Vivian Drummond Nettles, OBE, is a British actor and author. He is best known for his starring roles as detectives in the crime drama television series ''Bergerac'' (1981–1991) (as title character Jim Bergerac) and ''Midsomer Murders'' (1997–2011) (as Tom Barnaby). He has also narrated several television series.
I have been watching "Midsomer Murders" and was curious about the lead actor in the series. Before his role in this series, he was active in the theater and then became the lead in a British Detective series. This caused him to become, in his words, a "mini celebrity." John Nettles has an excellent command of the English language. He narrates a lot of crazy situations he found himself in over the years. It would have been more entertaining to me if I had recognized many of the other British mini-celebrities he referred to in this narrative. It was a quick read and I finished it in a few hours. If you are a TV fan from the UK and are old enough to have watched British television in the 1970's and 80's, you will get far more out of this. It was written before his starring role in Midsomer Murders. Apparently he has now fully retired.
John Nettles describes what it is like to become famous after success as a stage actor and later the star of Bergerac, a British dective series. Since I am a huge fan of Midsomer Murders I had to track down this book. I wasn´t disappointed in this hilarious recounting of his early experiences prior to MM. I classified this book as a memoir giving Mr. Nettles the benefit of the doubt that all the experiences he relates are true. I found this book in a hardcover edition through an online bookstore so good luck to those of you who would like to obtain a copy. It is worth the effort to hunt it down.
John Nettles offers a humble, yet humorous account of his life as a celebrity. This book follows his career from his beginnings as a thespian, through his many television shows and honor by the Queen of England. Entertaining, enlightening and at times down right laugh out loud funny, he confirms you must always work at your craft, appreciate those who keep you in the limelight and stay true to your real self.
An interesting insight into one of my favourite actors. Wasn't that much of a fan of Bergerac, give me Inspector Barnaby every time, but Mr. Nettles came over as someone who didn't take himself too seriously and seemed to enjoy every part he played on the whole. I do hope he's written, or will write about his time on Midsomer Murders. Should be some interesting anecdotes to tell! Very highly recommended.
I adore John Nettles in Midsommer Murders and I will admit, I could hear him reading this in my head. His narrative style pulled me into his story, but I am sure it helped that I was already a fan of his acting work.
After discovering John Nettles on the PBS series “Midsummer Murders”, I did a search about his body of work, & also watched Bergerac, A Family at War, & more recently this book. In his book he was more real, candid, funny, articulate, human & as honest as it might be possible for an actor to be. Wished the book had been longer because I enjoyed it very much.
The title does not reflect the text but I think it will stir interest enough to purchase it This is a brief biography of an MC (minor celebrity) by a self effacing actor with humorous intent. This book is rather eloquent and interesting to followers of the author who had appeared on British TV for years
Part warning part autobiographical there is enough truth in this book to keep you delighted. The truther the sentence the harder I laughed. Totally enjoyable .
John Nettles was an actor in Bergerac before he became Tom Barnaby in Midsomer Murders. This is about his experiences as a celebrity during Bergerac. His writing is completely enjoyable. He has hardly any ego at all.
