Eva Mensah #1

Said the Demon to Little Miss Eva

Rate this book
Artist, Evangeline Mensah is slowly losing the mind beneath her Afro. A part of it has to do with rock star, Gabriel Walker strolling his rock star self into her exhibition, and looking quite determined to repeat the best night of her life. The other part is the strange things happening to her home and her dreams. Dreams that make her feel really odd around fashion photographer Michael Lee. Not to mention they feature a bunch of women who keep turning up dead.

Instinct and an overprotective Gabriel warn her to steer clear of Michael but there is something so familiar about him, she can’t help but be drawn to him in spite of the darkness that seems to surround him. And it’s just coincidence that he happens to live one solitary floor above her own home. That’s all. Coincidence.

Ah, poor Billy. The only girl between two boys who each have nearly a foot on her. Didn't stop her from starting physical fights with them. She still thinks she can take them. So while she used to hide away in her wardrobe to read a book or four, she started to question why the heroines in those books would just lie there and take it. No, not just sex, but downright James-Bond-backhand-slapping, do-as-you're-told-woman, inappropriate lie there and take it.
She couldn't understand it. These women were just playing that mental woman from Coming to America, Miss “Whatever You Like” who barked like a dog and hopped on one foot. Billy didn't want to do that. Definitely not because one empty-headed fool with different anatomy told her to. So she started to create characters and worlds where the women could own their sexuality, their intelligence, their right to turn around and say “jog on, mate” without apology.
The small problem was that other people wanted to read what she was had written. “Er...why?” didn't cut it as an answer. After years of prodding and pleading and come on and for goodness’ sake, what's the point otherwise, she closed her eyes and pressed “submit.” Actually, she had Prosecco, limencello and white wine, then pressed “submit.” Who would have thought people would actually enjoy reading about the crazy characters who live in her head? But they have done, and Billy feels rather proud of that connection with her fellow man.
Billy lives in London with the most patient family in the world and doesn't forget for a minute how lucky she is. Well, she wouldn't mind a BBC adaptation of one of her novels... Ooh, with Richard Armitage!

I enjoyed the book. I liked the paranormal aspect of it and I love Billy London's heroine, very strong and determined; just as I like them.

Billy London did not disappoint in this sweetly scary story. Like another reviewer, I couldn't put this book down and I did sleep with my bathroom light on and the closet door closed! The romance between Gabriel and Eva was so sweet. The scary demon part was really just a backstory-but scary none the less. Billy London makes her characters feel so real, like they are people that you know and this couple wasnt any different. I really enjoyed reading about the evolution of their relationship.

My only issue with this book is that Gabriel's history was all very general. And when he found out who Eva was did he ever tell her that he wrote the song that launced his career? Past that, I read so many books that it takes a great story to stay with me after I've completed them, but all of Billy London's books stay with me and I devour anything she writes. I automatically purchase her books even before I read the book description

London's talent for storytelling isnt the issue here, its the subject matter and length that messed this one up.

one cannot tackle a live story and tossbin demonic posession and handle it well in 70 pages. She's a badass writer but she ain't Supergirl.

Too much needed assumption, glossing over and lack of relationship. This story was just too big to novella it.

This was an interesting book that I liked ok, but I found myslef a bit lost in the story because there were many references to the first time Eva and Gabriel met and hooked up, which sounded like great fun, but that we never get to actually read about. This would have given more depth to their relationship and to this quite short story.
