Maeren #1

Every Witch Demon but Mine

Rate this book
There is no such thing as a lightning witch.

Elizabeth Norwood has been hiding in the human realm most of her life, filling a niche as a vampire slayer that isn't quite as secret as her magic. Staking demons wasn’t part of the deal. The only way to keep hell from following her hidden family and ruining their happily ever after is to confront the demons from her old life and do what she’s trained for her whole life, defeat the monster.

Seems simple enough until she accidentally stabs Prince Daemon in the back. It was the spiked punch, honest! Only wounding the dark demon of her dreams has put him on her scent and the hunt she had planned changes into a chase with nowhere to run. Her sister is busy facing her own demons. Her mother will tear hell apart to save her, even if the rest of their world comes crumbling down in penance. Elizabeth has no choice but to grab the prince by his fangs and cast the biggest illusion her lightning magic ever conjured.

Daemon won’t be easily tricked. He has grown up in a dark court full of intrigues and assassins. The thorny path to the throne is strewn with his fiery siblings, blood-harem rights and a little dragon problem that’s got the villagers in an uproar. Now, Elizabeth is attracting interest that a witch with a secret cannot afford. She will need more than a few, sweet kisses to pull Daemon away from it all and under her spell. He is the most dangerous monster she’s faced, a true match to her singular magic in ways she can’t parry without revealing her secrets. They’ll dance until one of them is caught and she is forced into a terrible dilemma.

There’s only one rule about slaying that matters.

The stake goes in the heart.

Very original take

On this first book in the series we are introduced to a pretty interesting new world. With a fresh take on vampires, witches, demons and shifters. This book happens in two realms. The current modern human world and Maeren. In Maeren all witches are the female of the species while all vampires are the male and they have a symbiotic relationship. Witches produce a protein in their blood that vampires need to stabilize their magic. They both have elemental magic, but witches are treated as convenience for vampires to feed on to enhance their magic. Therefore their society is pretty backwards, with the more powerful vampires forming harems to feed their power.

The main characters are very well thought out and develop nicely through the first book. This is an RH, however by the end of this first book you only know one of the males that will be in the harem and suspect three others. This is a slow burn, however let me tell you the steam is through the roof.

The world, the characters, the story, the intrigue is all well thought out and very engaging. My only complaints are that the beginning was a bit slow with a bit of info drop, and that the heroine (Elizabeth) seemed a bit powerless and needing a bit of rescuing. Let me explain that a bit, Elizabeth is supposed to be this VERY powerful witch, and she is a badass slayer here in the human realm. However when she gets to Maeren she can't use her magic (not going to give any details so no spoilers) so she comes through as a little damsel in distress. Don't get me wrong this plays into the story and she is by no means a simpering annoying heroine, she is strong and badass, but at the beginning she is set up as this extremely strong witch, which later she can't be. But I promise this is barely anything, this book is extremely well thought out and I am hoping that this plays into character growth and development as the series progresses.

Something else that is great in this book is the side-characters. They are also multidimensional characters with stories and development. You get invested in their stories and wanting them to get a HEA as well.

Anyways, I loved this book, I am already halfway through the next. Could not put it down once I started and I am super excited to see where it goes. Highly recommend.

Not an RH, really bad writing

First, I need to say this is not a reverse harem. There is only one guy and some unsavory potentials. Please don't label your book an RH if it's really not.

That's not the reason for my low rating though. This was so terribly written that I honestly don't even know where to start. I doubt this book ever say an editor and it definitely never had a beta reader. Please seek an editor. This is barely readable.

I actually hated almost every single character. Elizabeth is supposed to be all powerful but we never once see that. The flashbacks were ridiculously long and completely unnecessary. I still dont have any idea what happened in the end. All of a sudden the only character I liked was the bad guy?

There were some redeeming parts. Such as Elizabeth's relationship with Jill and her mom. I enjoyed their banter. I liked Daemon a lot but that ending ruined it.

Basically, I can't recommend this at all and I don't understand all the high reviews. But if the author ever gets this edited and republished, I might give it a reread. As it stands now it's virtually unreadable. I recommend skipping this one.

AHOY MATEY we have a new series before us, yes "we" as the royal me, lol and the best of all...

it has nothing to do with pirates..I just like Captain Sparrow HA!
Anyway where was I - Yes, a new series for the RH genre, by Mercedes Jade, which you know what' I thoroughly enjoyed.
I know, I know, it's the usual suspects of Vampires, Witches and Demons, but it was on the backdrop of very well constructed world building and interesting story line.

With Elizabeth Norwood as our leading witch, it doesn't focus solely on her perspective but multiple characters are drawn together with differing romantic interests and political intrigues. I am not always a fan of MPOV but here it worked really well, as all the characters were all well fleshed out with all sorts of interesting quirks and flaws.

Added to that we don't have the usual instant RH with everyone together signing Kumbaya, with them against the world. OORAH! With lots of nice front and back stabbing and a nice kidnapping or two, who can go wrong. In fact I was forced to read both books back to back courtesy of Amazon KU, OH! what I have to suffer for you guys!
Look to be honest it wasn't perfect, I didn't always follow what was going on in the world building, but that as probably me as I am a bit of an impatient reader. So don't let this put you off and once I got into the swing of things the second book was even better.
So guys give this one a go - it was fun read!

I liked the overall story and the characters, but I had a difficult time reading it due to the writing style. It was confusing and I wasn't able to read the book in one flow. I might continue with the series because I am curious about the storyline - I'm just not sure if I can bear more of that kind of writing.

I was so not expecting this book to be like it was, the cover was, in my opinion, completely misleading, and the blurb didn’t fully show you what the book was really about. I had this book in my TBR for months and I always pushed it aside because I thought it was going to just be another quick little romance with not much background, but I am so glad that I was wrong. This book surprised the hell out of me, I was so not expecting the depth of the characters, the background, and the absolute beautiful writing style! Do not be fooled by the cover or the blurb, this book is absolutely fantastic!! I am so excited to read the next book!

Now, let me tell you why I did not give this book 5 stars. Elizabeth’s relationship with Daemon was confusing. Now don’t get me wrong, I love him (even though we were left on a bit of a cliffhanger) and I think he’s going to be a fantastic love interest. But their relationship didn’t have the substance it could’ve had, and I felt that it moved way too quickly when they didn’t even really spend that much time together. Now if they had spent more time together I would have been okay with it but it sort of felt like they only met a couple times. Hopefully it’s remedied in the next books. I am so excited to see the other love interest that are going to be introduced, through the whole book I was trying to decide who may be added into the harem......I honestly have no idea!

Onto another great part of this book. I usually know what’s going to happen in a book. I know who is going to be with who and what’s going to happen, no matter how good the author is at surprises......but I was absolutely shocked at this book, there were so many things that I did not see coming and there are still some mysteries that I do not know what’s going to happen!! It is so exciting I can’t even explain it!! The whole thing with You Know Who and him turning out to be You Know Who and then maybe seeing a good side but then a bad side, I was shook!!!!(i’m not a spoiler but I really needed to get that off my chest, but you don’t know who You Know Who is, so ha!) well now I am off to day dream and figure out who is going to be added to the harem!😍🙌

This is such a complex world build. And.... I LOVE IT!! You get a glossary in the beginning to understand how the world is built which I highly recommend not skipping over. It helps your understanding of the way some things work and makes it easier to read it first so you can follow along later on. But it's not so complex of a world you're actually required to read it to understand. The characters? Oh my God, the characters are divine. They're complex and broken and intriguing. There's your royalty with their backstabbing and the almost typical royal feuding between siblings and heirs. There's the main FMC Elizabeth, her sister Jill and their mother. Their family is broken and full of secrets themselves which they are naturally reluctant to share. Castle life is a new experience for them in this situation as they weren't raised the same. But the women handle it with amazing adaptability, strength and determination. I'm torn between wanting to love Elizabeth or Jill more. Then there's the royal family. Daemon and Victor hold special places in my heart. I simply adore them. Theres so so much I want to say about this book but I dont want to give anything away. This book had me so hooked before I even made it to Chapter 4!

**disclaimer** this is a reverse harem book, but it's slow building. She's only involved with one guy in this book at the moment. World building takes time guys, so dont expect a full harem right away. But give this author the chance. Shes made an incredible world, characters and storyline.

Dont let the cover fool you, this is a legendary tale!

Where do I even begin but by saying holy smokes that was an amazing book with the best adventure I have read to date.

The first two chapters were a bit confusing as it switches timelines (it does say) but you get used to it and the rest of the book is on one timeline.
The world building in the book was insane, everything from the species, creatures, magic, royalty, 'hell', the human plain and the characters!

The story of these two sisters has only really just begun and I can't wait to continue reading about their quest.
Elizabeth is awesome, she is the badass lighting/air witch (there has never been one) and her sister is a earth/blue Fire witch with some mad martial arts skills.
This is a tale of secrets, assasinations, harems, vampires with elemental powers and witches on a mission.
I am honestly in love with Daemon and really want to know what the hell happened while Liz was knocked out.
Victor is also growing in me as of the last couple of chapters.
This book does finish on a cliffhanger but the book hangover is so worth the story.

I LOVED this book so very much, the idea behind it is great and unique, the world is beautifully built, the characters are well written and I really wanted to know what happens to them all the way through the book (as well as slap a couple of them up the side of the head, if you want to know who then read the book!). It had me hooked from the very beginning and I got very attached to the characters.

And as for the ending....I just need to know when the next one is coming out so I can find out what happens next as I can't believe they did what they did (again you have to read it to find out who and what)....

This book was outstanding!! I loved the sass of the MC, ad the potential love interests were steamy. The world that she created is fascinating, and you dive right in immediately. It’s a light-hearted, fun read that grabs you immediately and makes you want to ignore all of your responsibilities to find out what happens next. I love that the FMC is such a strong character — ready to kick some ass and rescue herself. I definitely recommend this as a must read for anyone that likes fantasy and RH. It’s a slower burn with a lot of interaction. And you don’t start to see the RH until book 2. The ending is a cliff hanger so prepare yourself.

First of all, would give this a 3.5, but Amazon doesn't allow for half stars (an issue that is totally infuriating).

An important thing to know- this first book might not present itself as RH. From the blurb itself, it says that the harem kind of sneaks up on the MC, so I'm willing to wait it out and invest in the slow build & slow burn. For me, there was enough other plot points circulating through the book that I wasn't majorly thrown off by the romance and/or harem aspect not being super developed in this first book.

Elizabeth aka Liz aka the Wicked Witch as her sister affectionately calls her, is one of those MCs who has a big dose of power. Unfortunately, she doesn't get to flash it around very much because a big vulnerability comes with revealing the true extent of her strength and powers. I do find her Lightning ability very intriguing though, and I like how her ability is twisted out into different talents- physical lightning as well as the idea that she can manipulate the electrical impulses in the brain. That was a cool touch that I wasn't quite expecting to find.

Liz is a little bit fumbling- for someone who's trained as a slayer/hunter, there are moments where you'd like "girl, you should be doing better than this", but I think Jade does a decent job of helping us understand that it's not necessarily Liz's slayer training that's leaving her lacking but rather her and her sister being totally out of their element at the Court.

The other characters are a blend of some sass, some dominance, and definitely a lot of questions- is the "bad" guy truly bad? Was she right to trust the other, or should she have kept herself distant? Whose intentions are genuine? There are some surprises at the end of the book that make both Liz and readers wonder who is really on which side. Right now, I'm thinking Liz makes the wrong choice at the end of book one, but time will tell.

One thing that was a little different from many of the other RH I've read lately is that Liz has a strong family bond. I really liked the dynamics with her and her family: mother & younger sister. It's nice that she already has some strong females close to her; sometimes it feels a little repetitive that the FMC finds herself with no one to help support her other than the men.

Overall, I enjoyed Every Witch Demon But Mine. There are some flashbacks which, at times, detracted from the regular flow of the story. However, they were useful/helpful/entertaining- it's really just placement that I sometimes had an issue with. The story itself generally flows well, and there's enough world/magic building to give readers a necessary foundation while still lettting us stay curious and wonder about what surpises will come next!

DNF at 22% when the girls infiltrate a ball in Maeren.

From the beginning, I found the story very confusing.

* The segue from vampire slaying to magical training with the missing queen and then somehow portalling back to the royal castle at Maeren to track down a "traitor" for the queen by 20% into the book was really odd and abrupt.

* It wasn't super well explained where Elizabeth and Jill's missing noble dad was and what exactly happened to get them banished to the human world by that point either, so we were charging ahead in the plot without a solid backstory foundation. I learned more about the demon prince and his background with his mother and the girls' mother, and he hadn't even physically showed up in the story yet!

* The family dynamic between the three women was some weird combination of humorous yet intimate telepathic connections, and Elizabeth didn't really seem to act like a self-reliant 25+yo woman but more like an 18yo tbh with her dependence on her mother.

* Elizabeth and Jill seemed so relaxed about joining the Maeren court to spy for their self-declared traitor defense mission and interacting with all these vampire suitors when it's been made clear that they've been banished to the human world a significant portion of their lives? Training by the missing queen could only go so far, and the vampires apparently bit the women's wrists to taste and court them - I would totally be freaking out by this behavior if I had grown up for decades without having to deal with vampires and only humans!

* I had no idea that lightning was supposed to be a super powerful fire ability until I bothered to look at the glossary in the back. From just reading the story, it just seemed like some uncommon offshoot that was just odd in Elizabeth since she tested for "weak" air and not a fire ability.

I didn't understand any of the motivations of the main characters and the pacing and action seemed poorly planned. The author noted that this ebook was updated Oct 2020 since its first publication in Nov 2018, but I'm passing on trying to finish this book.

Good

This was my second book by this author. I loved the different take on vampires, witches and demons. The author was descriptive enough so I could easily picture the settings. What didn't work as well for me was the confusion. There were several instances where there was action but it was confusing because there wasn't enough showing instead of telling. Due to this, I didn't understand the nature of the conflict until I was told by the narrator. Also, most of the secondary characters are still a mystery. I assume that more character development and character motivation will be provided in subsequent books. Even with the couple of negatives mentioned, I still very much enjoyed this book.

Give it time

This was s confusing story that still caught and entrapped me the longer I read. Instead of explanations to ease or coax you into this world, you are quite literally dropped into a pit of intrigue, magic, shifters and vampires. The rules are a mess, the universe baffling and the goal unclear - yet there is something undeniably compelling about the narrative and the picture being painted.

Pros:
- Very interesting
- Unique world building
- Buffy references galore
- Who to trust? Really, no one knows.

Cons:
- playing catch up and missing the point
- Chapters flip through time
- seriously confusing.

Hard start, good finish

I admit to struggling with the first half of the book, storyline was convoluted and twisted in such a way I struggled to work out who was what, where and when. Having read Mercedes Jade’s other series and having thoroughly gotten lost in it, I persevered, and I highly recommend you do as well, it took just one page and all the previous information snapped into place and there was the rock solid back history and made the moving forward flow amazingly. Well done Ms Jade, you got me, and I loved it. Now waiting slightly patiently for book 2.

It was ok

I'm not going to lie, this book was super long and dragged on constantly. I found myself skipping pages but I'm not sure if that's because I wasn't ready to commit to a book like this? Or if my mind couldn't wrap around the information overload. Now although I blasted through the pages that bored me, I somehow still enjoyed it, weird right? But I liked the storyline, loved the characters, it's just this book has so much world building and flashbacks to make me crazy!

I have mixed feelings. The switching back and forth in time period is not my favorite literary device as it was occasionally more frustratingly jarring to the plot than insightful. The tone leans toward not being entirely serious and the characters are frequently amusing. The author said it will be a slow build up to a reverse harem and at this first installment it’s hard to say who will be in the relationship or if her sister will also have a harem. Whatever the case, I just hope women (witches) overthrow the males (vampires).

**Warning: this text may contain spoilers** Not A RH
Although it had a good number of pages there was no reverse harem for the protagonist. The only one to seem to build a harem or close to one was her sister jill.im not sure if Liz will get one in the future but i doubt it . It seemed more involved with her sisters many suitors/lovers TBH if this book had Jill as the protagonist then I'd think it was a RH but it didn't seem to be one regarding Liz...

A whole new world

At first the book went a little slow for me. I don’t really like the back and forth of past and future however it was needed to describe this world. As the book developed, I couldn’t get enough of it! I wanted to see what happened next and who the characters really were. Could he be good? Could she share her secret? Why was she closed off? Not all questions are answered but it is a series so here I come book 2.

Loveeedddd it!!!!!! And heads-up -> it is a slow-burn RH.

So what makes it so good???
- the world-building
- the characters (strong women)
- the story
- Daemon 😋
- the dialogues (some very serious and some very funny)

Yeah maybe not everything is perfectly written, but I didn't mind it at all, cause it was such great read!!!!

Looking so forward to the next books to come!!!!!

Witches, vampires, dragons and deception. Who knew?

Fantastic story of entertainment. Everything is a little of the beaten path with this crazy magic structure and misunderstood characters. You will not predict the twists and be purely entertained but don't try to apply too much logic of you will miss out on the fun.

Such a good read

Ok so I honestly went into this book not expecting to like it. But i am glad that I did read it. Lies, deceit, love?, lust and a harem that she walks away from. I honestly don't know whose the bad guy and whose not. Just when you think you got it figured out, BAM plot twist. I will definitely read the next book because I am hooked

One of a kind series

Well my minds well and truly blaged. Don't know if I can even read the second book as I don't think this is my cup of tea. Definitely a mix up of how things are normally set. Don't know who the main bad guys are and still can't stop thinking about what I've read. Mind blown. However it's written awesomely and will decide later if I continue.

This book kept you guessing from chapter 1 to 43. You still do not know whose going to end up with who in the end. The traitor still is not known.
I love the strong 3 women and adding Victoria makes 4. The males that should know her secret hiding it... why? Both sisters learned a lot in this book. I can not wait to see them get more powerful and see who gets who.

Marked down a bit because although the story wasn't like usual vampire stories, there was a lot that could have been trimmed down. There were also issues with formatting (mind speak written like normal speech) and random italics scene direction at the top of chapters
