Hearts and Health #7

Operation Makeover

Rate this book
Will a makeover bring his fantasy to life or lead him to a love he never saw coming?

As a professional X-ray tech, Ridley has come a long way from the geeky kid Jace took under his wing in high school. Not that his best friend has noticed. Tired of pining, Ridley decides to show Jace what he’s missing. And what better way than with a newer, more sophisticated look?

Cole's clients at the salon where he works love him dearly. Men? Not so much. He has dated one mistake after the next, and he’s beginning to wonder if a guy exists who can handle his fabulousness. Then Ridley lands in his chair.

Cole agrees to be Ridley’s makeover guru, and they click effortlessly. But when Cole offers to help Ridley with his sexual confidence, passion flares and boundaries blur.

Ridley’s had his heart set on Jace a long time, but when he’s with Cole it feels too real to deny. Now he has a choice to make: the friend he’s always wanted or the man who’s given him a whole new lease on life.

Operation Makeover is part of the Hearts and Health series, but can be read as a standalone.

4 stars!

I admit I was a little skeptical about this because the plot is one that’s been done so many times it’s on the verge of being overdone but alas! I’m sooooo glad I still decided to try this because Ridley and Cole were soooo adorable!

Sure, the plot was still cliche but! It is all about the execution so.. this was well done. Except a few instances where there were some inconsistencies but meh, it was minor enough to overlook.

I always love the more flamboyant characters so Cole was my favourite. But I do also love the shy and nerdy and somewhat insecure character so, Ridley isn’t that far off!

Kudos to the author for managing to write such a long running series. I think it’s still got a lot more to offer so, looking forward to the rest! 😊

This was supposed to be a book I started before going to bed. I wasn't supposed to read more than a few chapters. That didn't happen though. It was too good to put down.

The "I need a makeover for my crush to notice me but instead I'm going to end up falling in love with the person helping me with this makeover" trope (i'm sure it has a shorter name but I have no idea what it is), is a very overused trope and I wasn't sure that this one would be anything special, hence the only a few chapters reasoning. Turned out this book is pretty damn special. The author did everything right with this one. I felt so much for both Ridley and Cole.

I might write a more detailed review when it's not almost two in the morning.

Another wonderful book by DJ Jamison. I just love the way she writes. Ridley has been in love with Jace since high school, but Jace had always just considered him his best friend. He decides to get a makeover in hopes that Jace will finally notice him. The first place he goes is to a new hairstylist and that’s when he meets Cole. He gets Cole to help him get a new wardrobe as well.of course they fall in love, and so did I. I loved their story.

Perfect mix of sweet and angsty

I do like DJ Jamison's style of writing, she always delivers a sweet romance with just enough angsting to prevent things from being too much.

There's usually some need for self-examination and a realisation that a person is worthy of love or that they can trust the person they're developing feelings for.

Here it's no exception and I loved the development of Ridley's dawning realisation that his long term crush wasn't actually the right guy for him.

A man has a crush on his best friend, and turns to a stranger for help. It was very romantic and had a positive message. The characters were all people whom I enjoyed getting to know.
Typo: "smidgen dramatic" sounds wrong to my ear. It's usually used with "of" and a noun. There's a lay/lie error ("they laid plastered together").
Continuity error: "[Theo to Ridley] And [Cole's] only twenty-eight." "[Later, Ridley says to himself] not that he knew Cole's exact age."

Love is the Best Makeover!

A sweet, enjoyable story with low angst and bit of drama between Ridley & Cole. I liked the MCs, the premise and co-characters. I also thought the pacing was good. A delicious romantic tale!

Ridley’s been in love with his best friend Jace for years. Tired of constantly being overlooked as a potential love interest, he decides he needs a change.

Enter Cole, a stylist at a local salon. They hit it off when Ridley goes in for a haircut, and the other man agrees to help with his makeover. They of course become friends and develop feelings.

Which man will end up owning Ridley’s heart in the end?

I enjoyed this. While I don’t exactly agree with Ridley’s reasons for the makeover, I’m glad that he didn’t let his end goal (Jace) get in the way of making a new friend and lover.

Pros: The writing, the character development, the slow burn romance, and the HEA ending.

Cons: I really had a hard time liking Jace. I also found Ronnie's directness as tactless. Actually, that is an understatement. I did not like how she spoke to Cole. She really could have worded her comments a whole lot better than she did. You can be direct without being a jerk about it.

Pro: You think this is about someone wanting a makeover to impress some guy? No. This is about learning how to love and respect yourself. This is about being able to look in the mirror and not analyze everything about your body that you think is flaw. It is about finding someone who helps you to understand that you are just perfect the way you are. This "makeover" was more about making over a perception that Ridley had about his appearance. I liked reading about how his confidence grew within each chapter.

Con: Travis. A cheating bag of dicks. Cole's ex.

Pro: The slow burn. The romance starts off as slow, acquaintance to friendship, friendship to friends with benefits, and friends with benefits to true lovers. I like the pacing of it.

Pro: It is not only Ridley that goes through a makeover. Cole learns a few things about himself as well.

Pro: a possible hint into the next book.

All in all, a great addition to a series and probably one of my favorites.

Had the privilege of reading the ARC for this title. I have provided an unbiased review with my honest opinions.

All of the characters acted juvenile. The author could correct this by changing the average age from 26 to 21. Cory was very sweet and giving, but he was a doormat. Ridley was pathetic and codependent on Jace. His self esteem was so low. He lived in his head too. He didn't have anything to give to others. Cory deserved better. Jace was a self centered insensitive egotistical asshat. Ronnie was just downright nasty and crude.

This book had such a powerful meaning. One that each reader of this book will feel. This is a story of finding ones true self. With a little help from an unlikely source.

Ridley a X-ray technician, has a crush on his best friend of 10+ years. He thinks he needs to change himself to get Jaces attention. But when the plan backfires a new set of feelings emerge.

Cole is one of the best hairdressers at Fringe. One new client later and he’s helping Ridley get his crush. Until feelings start to grow. Until just being friends isn’t working anymore. Things take quite the turn and now they both are working toward different goals.

Great development of characters, great build up and a story that will make your heart very happy. The side characters are good and give the story a different feel. Sometimes you may want to throttle a few of them. But in the end this makeover, ends in true love.

Highly recommended.

Cole is the sweetest, most caring protagonist that I've read in a while. When he meets Ridley, yes he's attracted to him, but something about Ridley draws Cole to him and he wants to help him. And Ridley thinks Cole is the most beautiful man he's ever seen and thinks he's out of his league, but he also thinks that about his best friend, Jace. And although he's getting a makeover to draw in his best friend, Ridley starts to realize that Cole is the person who really sees him for who he is and doesn't want to change him. After their relationship gets deeper when they throw in sex, both men become attached to the other. I enjoyed the sweet story and although Ridley might not have known what he wanted most of the time he was with Cole, in the end, he realizes he has this chance at love and grabs on with both hands. A great read!!

Ridley has been infatuated with Jace, his best friend for years but Jace never really seems to see him. He decides that a makeover might be the thing that finally draws Jace's attention. This is how he ends up on Cole's salon chair. When he explain's what he is trying to do, Cole appoints himself Ridley's personal stylist. The pair start spending a lot more time together and their friendship quickly grows. The problem is that the feelings grow too and Ridley has to choose whether he wants to go for the man he's always wanted or the man he is starting to fall in love with.
This is such a sweet story. I loved that both men had their insecurities and were able to help each other through them. The book also contains one of the best first kiss scenes that I have read in quite some time. Overall very highly recommended.

I purchased this book for free, not intending to read it right away; but after several unsuccessful attempts to delete it from my device, I took it as a sign from above that I should read it next. It was a perfect comfort read for the stressful U.S. Presidential Election week, hot and sweet, a little angsty. So much love here. I will be reading the whole series.

4.5 Stars!

Operation Makeover is book 7 in the Hearts & Health series, and even if it features some of the previous stories' characters/couples, it can be read as a standalone. I do suggest reading the whole series, though, because you'll be missing out otherwise.

Ridley has been in love with his best friend Jace for the last ten years and he's finally ready to do something about it, but first, he needs a makeover to make his friend actually notice him. Cole is the hair stylist in charge of the first step of Ridley's transformation, who offers his services to help Ridley with the rest of what he needs to become Ridley 2.0. They hit it off and are attracted to each other, and soon they start a friendship with benefits even if Ridley's heart is still set on Jace, or is it?

This was such a sweet and fun, yet slightly angsty read. It was kind of heartbreaking to see Ridley being overlooked by his crush and Cole being betrayed by his latest boyfriend. They both have confidence issues, even if in different ways, which makes it easier for them to click. And really, they're just what the other needs. Cole helps Ridley see himself in another, better light and Ridley shows Cole that he's worthy of the love of a good man. Never mind that they were hot, hot, HOT together, what I loved the most about them was the connection that they forged from veritable strangers to friends to lovers in a realistic manner. Even if I could see the misunderstanding coming from miles away, I was glad Ms. Jamison didn't drag it out for too long, and that it was resolved in a very satisfying way.

I didn't particularly care for Ronnie, Ridley's twin sister, I found her too brash for my taste and some of the things she said to Cole made me want to strangle her. I definitely liked Anita, Cole's friend, a whole lot more. And Jace, well, I'm still undecided about him, but I do hope we'll get his story next.

Overall, a great addition to the series! Operation Makeover is my second favorite book and Ridley/Cole are one of my favorite couples in the series, so yeah, I can't recommend it enough.

I was surprised when I actually enjoyed this!! I LOVED how mature both main characters were, and they both put in effort to make their relationship work 😭♥️♥️ AND IT WORKED OUT FOR THEM!!

This book was charming in that the main couple worked TOGETHER to overcome both of their own insecurities. Adorable ‼️

Ugh brilliant. They had communication, consent, discussion, honesty, and love for each other 😭💕 I really liked the progression of them development feelings for each other, I thought it was really natural and made sense
++ entertaining smut! It was just the right amount, I didn’t find myself skipping any of it

Even though the premise of the story sounds like shit, it works because Ridley NEVER takes advantage of Cole. He makes everything clear from the start, and he’s the one who makes everything clear at the end 😭♥️ they were DOWN BADD for each other

Personally I didn’t really like Jace’s character, so I don’t think I will be reading book 8 “Rapid response”, which he stars in. Ik it’s human to have flaws, but reading abt the way he’s so ignorantly self-centred PISSED ME AWFFF. Idc if he didn’t mean it 💀🙏 also Jace was CONSTANTLY shitting on Ridley and putting him down 😭😭 LEAVE THE MAN ALONE UR PART OF THE REASON WHY HES SO INSECURE MF

Ronnie describes why I dislike Jace here:
“Yeah, but their friendship is unbalanced. It always has been. If they ever start a relationship, it’d be a mess.”
“Imbalanced?”
“Haven’t you noticed that Ridley defers to Jace?”
Cole frowned. He hadn’t really been around the two of them enough to pick up on that dynamic. “Really?”
“It’s not that Jace is an asshole or anything,” she continued. “They’ve been friends since high school. Jace was kind of Ridley’s hero. He was being bullied for a while, and then Jace took him under his wing, you see? Of course Ridley got a crush. And of course he happily agreed to do whatever made Jace happy. Jace is insensitive, maybe, not to realize that Ridley has always gone out of his way to please him, but he’s not intentionally selfish.”

*I received the book in exchange for an honest review*

Hello! I am feeling a bit rusty after a long absence, but I’ll try to do justice to another amazing book by DJ Jamison. My first book by her was Heart Trouble so, the hospital world with all the characters mentioned here, and book by book, my admiration for her works grew. I don’t think any book will top Urgent Care, this one was quite close.

I loved the awkward Riley! In so many ways I imagine he is quite the same as he was in high school where he looked up to Jace, and his Lego hobby is AWESOME as fuck. I also kind of understood the idea of reinventing oneself. The makeover, even though Riley think it’s for Jace, is for Riley. And he was lucky to find Cole. Cole is fabulous and unapologetically gay. Some of it isn’t even his choosing, but he makes do. Except one thing. He is awful at choosing partners.

I loved both characters for themselves and what they could be to each other and I had my fingers crossed that they work it all out. I mean, I knew they would, but here’s the magic, right? The fact that even with knowing that there will be a happy ending, you are still feeling everything. And in this book, DJ Jamison managed that perfectly!

It was a book I adored, with adorkable and awkward X-ray technician becoming adorkable and confident technician and with the fabulous Cole showing his human side, not so fabulous and self-assured all the time.

And I absolutely loved the cameos of the characters from previous books. My heart just about melted at the end 🙂

Fun and lighthearted, this was also one of the most perfectly sweet romance stories I've read in a while.
An endearing take on the classic "ugly duckling to beautiful swan" makeover. Made even better because, as it turns out, true love sees you for who you are. No "embellishment" needed.

Cole falls for Ridley just the way he is and though he helps Ridley with his "transformation", he never thinks the other man needs to change. In fact, he only goes along with it to help Ridley see his own self-worth and become more confident. And to have an excuse to keep meeting up with him, maybe.. Cole is such a sweetheart! I adored him for continuing to help Ridley make an impression on Jace, at great cost to his own heart. Though I also wanted to shake some sense into him!

Ridley's insecurities are clear from the get-go, but as the story progresses we learn that Cole is not as confident as he outwardly appears and neither man has had much luck in love. So they have more in common than they think.
I loved how gradually this story was built up, and the way they very naturally fell into a friendship first. There's chemistry between them too, of course, but it's not what drives the relationship.

This was a great read, entertaining and very romantic.

Oh man this book is so great!! Ridley (and I absolutely love this name!!) is in love with his best friend Jace. Seeing Jace pick up other guys hurts, so he decides to get a makeover, new hair, new clothes, a whole new look from his geeky t-shirts and baggy jeans. Hoping Jace notices and things progress.

Cole is a fabulous, hairdresser who changes Ridley’s look with a little color and cut. He instantly takes a liking to Rid, but knowing he is doing all this for the love of his BFF, Cole decides to be friends and help him out with fashion.

Soon the two are hanging out, shopping and having a “friends with benefits” good time. But things never go as you plan. Rid is confused about his feelings for Cole and changing feelings for Jace. Cole knows he’s in for a bruised heart if he doesn’t pull away from Rid.

This book has a great plot, DJ Jamison knows how to write a story that will keep you interested all the way through. Friendship, laughter and love are what makes a relationship work, now Cole and Ridley just need to tell each other their true feelings.

4.5 stars!!

When I signed up to review Operation Makeover, I thought it was going to be cute and quirky, more of a fun read. It was that and so much more, drastically exceeding expectations. The story of Ridley and Cole was sweet, emotional, quirky, fun, and at times funny. Both were trying to overcome self-esteem issues, some buried more deeply than others.

The emotion that bled through the pages and through this story was more than I expected, and at times, I found myself tearing up a bit. I'm not saying that you are going to need a box of tissues for this, but have one handy for certain parts. (You know me, I'll always warn you.) On top of the emotional aspect, the story was never slow, always moved forward, and engaged the reader. It kept me enthralled. And the characters...they were real and could be anyone that you know. They were two men who were struggling to find love, accept love, and to accept themselves.

I give this story 4.5 stars. Be fabulous! (Read the book and you'll understand!)

One of the strengths of "Operation Makeover (Hearts and Health)" lies in its exploration of the human condition. Through the characters' experiences and struggles, the author skillfully delves into the complexities of life, highlighting the importance of self-acceptance and embracing one's true identity. The novel beautifully portrays the power of love, friendship, and support in overcoming obstacles and achieving personal fulfillment.

Moreover, the inclusion of a relevant link, https://www.soulaire.com/do-atheroscl..., within the review provides readers with an opportunity to delve deeper into the subjects discussed in the book. This additional resource adds value to the review and enhances the readers' understanding of the themes addressed in the novel.

The author's writing style is engaging, evocative, and filled with vivid descriptions that transport readers into the hearts and minds of the characters. The dialogues are natural and realistic, allowing readers to connect with the emotions and experiences of the individuals involved.

Who loves pining?? This one's for you! Ridley has been in love with his best friend, Jace, for years, but Jace has never noticed. Ridley decides his lackluster wardrobe and geeky personality need a makeover in order to get his attention so he heads to a salon for a new look. A gorgeous hairstylist named Cole takes care of him and notices Ridley is severely lacking confidence. Cole recently found out the guy he was seeing is married with kids and a bit of an ass, so he's drawn to Ridley's sincerity and offers to help him with the next phase of his makeover: clothes.

Despite his unrequited love for Jace, Ridley feels a strong attraction for Cole. It's mutual, but Cole knows Ridley is in love with someone else and isn't really in the mood to get his heart broken. He can't help but offer himself to Ridley for "practice" since Ridley has gone three years without even a hookup, waiting for Jace to notice him. As much as both of them pretend things are casual, they can't help but develop feelings. But will Ridley's feelings for Jace ever fade? Hoo boy, all the pining.

🔥: Even though these two start things as casual, there's so much passion between them. Their scenes are quickly paced with most of the details and lots of desire. No kink, but plenty of enthusiasm!
😆: Despite the heartache, there are some laughs, especially as Ridley continues to gain confidence in his own skin.
😭: My eyes watered at a couple points as these two deal with a traumatic moment thanks to Cole's married ex. Ugh, hate that guy. There's also plenty of emotion as Ridley feels more and more caught between two choices.

I was nervous about this one because I expected some level of heartache with the complicated love triangle. It's so worth the HEA! Cole and Ridley deserve so much happiness!!

This book was a delight from start to finish. Ridley, the main character, is relatable and ready for a change. His transformation is not just about his appearance, but also about embracing who he is. The chemistry between Ridley and Cole is instant, and their banter adds humor throughout the story.
Cole is the perfect counterpart to Ridley, both in and out of the salon. He's got this wonderful confidence and flair that makes him such an engaging character. Their interactions feel natural and honest, making the reader root for their connection. The way their relationship develops is smooth and inviting, making you want to keep reading.
The backdrop of the salon and the makeover concept brings a fun twist to the typical friend-to-lover trope. And while Ridley's feelings for Jace create some tension, it's the growing bond with Cole that really shines. This story is a blend of sweet moments, laughter, and a bit of self-discovery. Operation Makeover has warmth and heart, and I loved reading it. Recommended.

Operation Makeover is a good romance by DJ Jamison that just so happens to contain an important message.

I love the storyline, as Ridley meets Cole while he's trying to get a makeover. Of course, Ridley's getting the makeover to impress his lifelong crush, his best friend, Jace. Instead, Ridley ends up finding himself and his true love.

Despite the storyline seeming to be about improving yourself to impress someone, it actually ends up being a story of finding confidence, self-love, and true love. It is touching and tender the way that Cole helps Ridley to realize his true worth. Ridley's self confidence rises throughout the story, in a realistic way. Essentially it is a beautiful and tender story of finding love and a sense of confidence and security at the same time.

The slow burn romance that develops between the two is super fun. I enjoy the pace of this story, as the relationship between Ridley and Cole changes little by little, ending with them getting their happily ever after.

Overall, I really enjoyed Operation Makeover, and can't wait to see what DJ Jamison creates next.

Unrequited love brings Ridley to Cole for a makeover. In an attempt to win his best friend Jace over, Ridley looks to changing his look. His insecurities around his looks mean he doesn't see himself as anything special.

Cole oozes confidence in the way he looks but behind the carefully put together look he is also insecure. The men in his past have seen him as being good in the sack but not for anything long term. His latest ex is a prime example of this.

Cole helps Ridley see himself as the hot, amazing guy he is and building up his confidence. Equally Ridley helps Cole see that he is worth more than his ex and is deserving of more.

Both of these characters are really likable - they felt like regular people that you can hang around with and who have the same insecurities most of us have when it comes to dating. The characters completely sucked me into this book and kept me hooked throughout.

You're Perfect Just as You Are

Cole is a gifted hair stylist.
When Riley shows up for a 'new style' he and Cole immediately hit it off.

Riley is an X-Ray technician who lives with his feisty twin sister, Ronnie.
Riley undertakes a make over, Riley 2.0, in the hopes of garnering the attention of his best friend.
In the process, he discovers the confidence he needs to really go after what he wants in life!

The greatest thing about D. J.'s books and characters are the growth they experience right before your eyes! Plus she fleshes them out so that you see them for whom they really are, inside and out.

'I think helping anyone realize it's okay to be what they want to be, who they need to be, is pretty inspiring too.'

'A familiar longing to belong, to be unconditionally loved, pulled at his heart.'

I received an ARC from the author...then purchased a copy in appreciate for a tale well told!
