“What do you mean, Ôshe’s gone’?”

Forensic psychologist Claire Markwood has answered her fair share of heart-stopping phone calls, but none quite as chilling as the one informing her that her sister, Darcy, is missing. Claire rushes to the butterfly sanctuary where Darcy has been working, prepared to do what she does best—work the clues. But Darcy, along with her car and some of the sanctuary’s rarest species of butterflies, has seemingly vanished without a trace.

Amid a flurry of mysterious leads and dead ends, Claire and her criminal lawyer husband, Nick, turn to friends and colleagues, desperate to tap every resource at their disposal. But the deeper they dig, the more unsettling the case becomes, dredging up old family secrets that shake the foundation of everything Claire thought to be true. And by the time this latest deadly threat is done with them, nothing will ever be the same.

This sounded like a terrific mystery unfortunately I just could not get into the story. I read almost 30% but I just couldn't go any further, so this will have to become a DNF on my list for now.

The book was sixth in a series but a stand-alone read yet almost every page it would reference events and information that had occurred in previous books in the series and I found that annoying and distracting and finally gave up. Someday maybe I can try this book again after I read the first book in the series since Karen Harper is a good writer and has a great following.

The premise for Dark Storm is really interesting, with a couple of unique plot elements focusing on suspended animation, and yet somehow this romantic suspense fails completely at being either romantic or suspenseful. Instead, it’s bloated with characters - about 12 were introduced in the first 5 or so pages, leaving me utterly boggled - and has clunky PoV switches around characters who aren’t actually the focus of the story. Neither Darcy, the woman kidnapped at the beginning of the story, nor any of the ‘bad guys’ ever get to tell any part of the story in their own words. Instead, most of the story is told from the point of view of Claire, Darcy’s sister, with occasional switches to Claire’s husband Nick and completely random people like Claire’s ex-husband, flying a ‘storm-chaser’ plane into a hurricane in an obvious attempt to add more drama to a plot entirely lacking in it.

Honestly, I just didn’t care about Claire and the way she kept recapping all her past dramas (obviously things which happened in the first five books in this series). This is definitely not a standalone, and if you’ve read and enjoyed the rest of the series, it’s possible you’ll eat this one up with relish, but I was totally bored. I only kept reading because I was watching the kids at swimming and didn’t have wifi to download something different to read - hoped the action might pick up at some point but it really didn’t. Not predictable because of that unique premise, but drawn out, lacking in suspense and bloated with characters who didn’t add anything to the plot. Two stars.

Now I love a good romantic suspense book especially with a what happened and who dunnit storyline- so the fact that I didn’t read on to find out what happened means that I had REAL issues with the book.
.
The hero and heroine are an established couple in love who have been through a lot (this is not the first book in the series). The heroine receives a distressing call when her sister leaves her phone and disappears without a trace. She has a whole family and life- where has she gone, what’s happened to her?
.
Ok first- character overload! Within the first chapter we were introduced to at least 10 characters and honestly couldn’t tell you who the main characters were until chapter 2. Second- the scenes didn’t flow that well- lots of chopping and changing and that did not create suspense but mainly just had me scratching my head trying to figure out what the heck was happening 🤷🏻‍♀️. So in the end: this book wasn’t for me and was a DNF about a quarter of the way in.

Dark Storm is part of the South Shores series. This is the only book in the series I've read, but I was able to understand without any issues. Naples, Florida is the setting, and I could only think hot and humid because I live in Florida. A missing sister and some missing peculiar butterflies from the farm where she works is intriguing. Who steals butterflies? It's a mystery with many layers and threads to unravel. I found the plot exciting and dynamic. I was pulled in immediately and wanted to know the ending so bad! I will read more from Karen Harper because I really enjoyed this book. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

If readers have been following this series, they would have come to known Darcy, Claire Markwood's sister. Claire has a young daughter, and often while dealing with dangerous situations, her sister Darcy would watch her. Darcy has two young children of her own. So, when she turns up missing, everyone is truly concerned.

Darcy was working at a butterfly sanctuary and she simply disappeared. No one can find a single clue. Both Claire and her husband, criminal lawyer Nick, pull out all of the stops to locate Darcy. Shockingly to all involved, Darcy's disappearance brings up long-hidden family secrets. Now that these secrets are being revealed, lives again are in jeopardy.

As this incredible series draws to a close, it was truly rewarding to think that Claire and Nick could have a happy life going forward. However, with Darcy's current situation, that proves hardly possible.

The only odd thing I ran across in this book was Claire's daughter's obsession with a doll. A very strange doll. As a matter of fact, this played greatly into the plot. The story had a tiny bit of a futuristic edge when it came to the extent the doll played in the story, and how this all affected what happened to Darcy.

I have so loved this series! One day I hope to read the entire six books again. I adore Karen Harper's writing and cannot wait to see what else she has in store for readers.

Many thanks to MIRA and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.

I really have enjoyed this series and I hate to say goodbye, but there are six books, and they are all great reads.
If you have not read any of the past books, you might want to go back and read them too, that being said, this author is great at keeping you up to date with the previous reads.
Again, you will be on the edge of your seat, but as the answers unfold, I can only say “wow”, never saw some of this coming, great conclusion to this series, and I will miss the setting and looking forward to the next story!

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Harlequin, and was not required to give a positive review.

Karen Harper writes an entertaining romantic suspense thriller with an edge. This was book six in the South Shores series and even though I have never read any the the previous five, I was happy to dive straight in as the synopsis was very appealing.

Forensic psychologist Claire Markwood's sister, Darcy, has disappeared. Claire rushes to the butterfly sanctuary where Darcy works, prepared to find out what she can. But her sister, along with her car and some of the sanctuary’s rarest species of butterflies, has seemingly vanished without a trace. Claire and her criminal lawyer husband, Nick, set out to find her, but the deeper they dig, the more unsettling the case becomes. As old family secrets are uncovered, Claire learns that some secrets aren’t just threatening—they’re deadly.

Set in Naples, Florida, there were many facets to this story; a disappearance, a traumatised child, and many other goings-on involving family members and friends. However, this was one of those series where the reader needs to start at the beginning to fully appreciate what is on offer (or at least before book six). This is definitely not a standalone, and if you’ve read and enjoyed the rest of the series, it’s very likely you’ll savour this. Karen Harper's characterisation was appreciable and I grew rather fond of Claire and Nick as the story progressed. I thought they were great together as a husband and wife sleuthing team. However, in the opening chapter, I felt snowed under with characters that I would have known if I had previously read the other books.

All in all, Dark Harbour was a super, great read. The mystery kept me guessing, the crime was intense and there was murder, some peculiar plots and a few unexpected surprises. It was entertaining, suspenseful, and fast-paced and I loved the wrap-up and the happy ending. I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from HARLEQUIN - MIRA (U.S. and Canada) via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

This is the sixth book and finale of the South Shores series. And unfortunately for me the first book I have read in the series. Nothing like coming in on the series finale.

Claire has quite a lot going on in this book. Her sister has mysteriously disappeared and left her phone in an unusual location. Her daughter has started her unusual obsession with her doll again… the obsession where the doll talks for her. And then a new doll shows up, one that is eerie and filled with what I can only imagine is artificial intelligence technology. Imagine Alexa or Siri in a baby doll. Right off the bat I contemplated if the small daughter had something to do with her aunt’s disappearance. Now that would have been a strange twist. There is also a threat of a big storm coming on the horizon. Think Hurricane Katrina. Lots of story potential here.

Some of the revelations seemed forced and where the author lead us is exactly where the plot went. Not a lot of red herrings here, I felt a little disappointed in that. With so much potential in the setting I was surprised that the author didn’t surprise me with where the plot was going.

There weren’t as many gasping bombshells as I thought there should be in a book of this genre. I anticipated the whole cryogenic plotline the moment the man said he wanted his brother’s head. I mean, why else would you want such a thing?

Even though the book was entertaining and well written, I wanted more. I have pushed off many of Harper’s books assuming them to be more scary than this. I will indeed dive into other books in her list and see how they fare against this one.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

Maybe I didn’t give the book enough of a chance, but some of the early plot lines were so unbelievable that I decided not to waste my time finishing the book. Who reports an adult missing after less than an hour; who tells 7 year olds their mom is missing after just a few hours; who has 3 family members kidnapped in a matter of a few years? Maybe the mystery has twists and turns, but it seemed something more unbelievable was introduced every few pages, so I returned the book to the library unfinished.

In Florida, forensic psychologist Claire Markwood consults on corporate fraud cases. Her daughter Lexi's first grade teacher has a butterfly farm. Claire's sister Darcy works part-time at the butterfly farm. Claire gets a call that her sister is missing from the farm. Although her phone was dropped and left behind, Darcy's car is gone and she left the butterfly house door open, which suggests she left or was taken in a big hurry. Claire, the police, and her extended family work to find her as a hurricane approaches.

I've read several books in this series and this one is my least favorite so far. Claire came across as being weak. The reason behind the kidnapping was creative but bizarre. Lexi's doll was creepy along with the voice she made as if the doll was speaking. If the hurricane had been played up a little more, I think the story would have been more suspenseful.

This is the last book in the South Shores series. I have read the whole series and have really liked all of them.. Lots of different story lines that all come together at the end and tie up all the mysteries. I did figure out parts of mystery early but enjoyed this series very much

This book is set in the Naples area of southwest Florida. It features Claire Markwood as the main character. Claire's sister, Darcy, disappears and she is frantic to find her. Darcy disappeared from a butterfly sanctuary and no one can find connections. The book was a quick easy read.

I've read the entire series and have come to look forward to each book. Claire's sister, Darcy, is now missing. Hopefully, Claire and Nick can find her in time before it's too late. There's plenty to keep the pages turning, and I'm so glad to have read them all.

Thank you Netgalley and the Publishers for allowing me to read this book and leave my opinion.
This was a slow read for me, not a bad book the story is interesting and the characters were relatable but it seemed to go so slow. I have read many books by this author and she never disappoints.

I never give out 1 stars because I haven't felt the need to rate a book so low. But this one just really felt long and drawn out. Not predictable, because I didn't guess the end correctly but I did skip a lot of pages just to get the book over with.

Wow, was this a nail-biter! I started this novel and I couldn’t put it down. I began reading it early morning and finished it late in the day and I jumped on my computer as soon as I finished so I could share what I liked while it was still fresh. There’s a lot to like about Dark Storm.

I guess this is the final book in the South Shore series but that didn’t matter. It didn’t matter that I hadn’t met Nick or Claire, Bronco, Darcy or Jace before. It wasn’t an issue that I hadn’t read the previous books because this novel was purely about Claire and Nick’s race to save someone they love. It was about their present. Most supporting secondary characters were family or friends like family, helping Nick and Claire in their search and caring for their kids. Actually, that’s something that impressed me – Ms. Harper never forgot the kids. With everything else that was going on, Claire remained a mom, Nick a dad, and they were very much dedicated to their family’s safety and well-being. The writing was so solid, it made those loving elements very clear.

Speaking of elements, as I read this novel, hurricane Dorian just finished harming the Bahamas and was threatening the East Coast. When Ms. Harper wrote about a hurricane, basing it on the one that hit back in 2017 (as per her Author’s Note), I’m sure she never imagined that a hurricane would hit again the same year this book was published. As I was reading about Jace and his hurricane hunter plane, and the warnings being issued for the residents in the book, I was listening to The Weather Channel. It was rather freaky to read things that were going on in the book in my hands at the same time listening and watching it actually happening with Florida and the Carolinas. For effect, for timing, for sheer impact, reading this novel at the same time real life mirrored it made Dark Storm an even more dramatic read. It reinforced the realism and proved the author did her homework. She has the skill to create the feeling of time running out, to bring the fear and worry for her characters alive, and the author put me in the middle of the action. When Ms. Harper put Claire through the wringer, I was along for the ride. By the time Ken arrived with the flashing lights, I was emotionally exhausted. That couldn’t have happened if the author hadn’t had the skill set to make a reader feel connected and invested in a character’s well-being. Ms. Harper has that skill in spades.

Here is where I share that I talked to the book. I stopped at a few points, held the book in my hands and scolded it “Come on! Can’t you see it’s too perfect? Don’t trust it!” or, “I knew it! I knew it! I told you so!” or my favorite – “That’s the guilty party! I just know it!”… Until I found out I was wrong and had to think back to figure out what clues I missed. No one was home when I was reading the exciting parts so I could walk around my living room, talk to the novel, sit down and read some more, and get up and start talking to the book again. I tell you, I had more conversations with Dark Storm than any book I’ve read in a long while. I might seem crazy, or it might be because this was a really good story. I vote for the story.

The tie-in between the butterflies and the sea creature was bizarre, especially when I found out that it wasn’t totally fiction. That was a fascinating discovery. Actually, I am really glad I read the Author’s Note at the end because Ms. Harper shared some really cool things. Like I said before, she did her homework.

The best thing about this was the wrap-up and the happy ending. What happened to Nita at the end, that’s another thing I could relate to because that’s what happened to me, sort of. It doesn’t have to be a hurricane though. Any big, nasty storm can have that effect. I can validate the truth of that.

All in all, Dark Harbor was a super great read. It’s gripping, suspenseful, fast-paced and almost impossible to put down. There’s murder, weird plots and some unexpected surprises. The mystery kept me guessing and the crime was intense, but what made this book wonderful was meeting Claire and Nick. They were a terrific couple and are perfect together. I enjoyed seeing Nick being able to understand his wife, supporting her even when she got into all those pickles, and those passionate clinches of overwhelming love just when they needed it most. If you enjoy a well written mystery, intense suspense and husband and wife sleuths, then I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book.

No wonder this book was the last of the series.

My favorite quote in the book would have to be the last one. ¨Yes, start at the beginning. And I always knew my dear sister would be my best friend for life- forever, too.¨ That strikes me as a good quote because although this whole book is not about the happy upbringings of life, in the end, we can all learn a lesson. No matter the circumstances of life, always choose to love those around you, rather than hate them. Because hatred is the worst thing to ever occur. This quote really brings the whole book together, showing how fights and hatred may happen, but in the end, you´ll learn to forgive and forget.

¨Dark Storm¨ gets right to the climax. First, Claire (forensic psychologist) and her husband Nick (lawyer) are happy with their little family, Lexi, 7, and Trey, 18 months, in Southern Florida. In a couple of chapters, we will soon be introduced to Claires' sister, Darcy, and her family. Darcy suddenly goes missing one day after work, Claire rushes over and sees Darcy's car and phone. No Darcy. As Darcy is about to pick up her daughter from Claire, everyone is in a scramble to find her. It is not until 7 days of searching, that Darcy shows up on Claires' doorstep. Wet, cold, thin, and abnormal. She comments ¨Sorry I´m late, Claire... Is Jilly ready to go home? I think there is a bad rainstorm coming.¨ (Harper, 234). This is a weird occurrence, as Darcy does not know what is going on. No idea of being home late 7 days. She soon goes to a psychiatric hospital to get better, and maybe remember some things that happened. No progress. As everyone scrambles to find who did this, Will Warren, an author on butterflies is the big progress. He kidnaps Claire and brings her to Larry Ralstons´ home, a completely different character, and they uncover what had happened. Will is in no place to hurt CLaire, just show her what had happened. He does, and we find out that Larry Ralston and his ¨bodyguard¨ Jedi Brown kidnapped Darcy to use her as a test for their ¨project.¨ This project soon turns out to be freezing dead bodies into a tube to preserve and make a ton of money off. Their plans soon change when they get arrested, and almost killed by Will. Why is Will so defensive of Darcy? Because he soon reveals that he is Darcys´ father. Claire and Darcy are half-sisters. Completely shocking. In the end, Will Warren is not arrested for attempted murder, skips town, and is barely heard from. Larry and Jedi are in jail, almost killed. And Dary and Claire are better than ever. They learn how important it is to stick together, act as one, even if they aren´t.

Overall, I believe the theme of this book is Love. If Darcy did not have such a good family who loves and adores her very much, she would have been dazed and confused for the rest of her life. If Claire did not have such a good family who loves and adores her very much, she would not have been able to comprehend Darcy´s disappearance and live great overall. If Will did not have a family who loves and adores him, he wouldn´t be hiding. It is a bad thing to say, but I am glad he is hiding because he was trying to protect his family who he loves. He protects Darcy and Claire and is the best protector. If these people did not love one another so much, they would be deep down into a hole of darkness.

Claire and her best friend Kris watched Claire’s seven year old daughter Lexi and nIece Jilly pulling weeds in the garden. Claire was married to Nick and they had a sixteen month old son Trey. Claire got a call from her sister Darcy’s phone but it was Ms Gerald her boss. She said she had went to the post office and when she got back Darcy and her car were gone. But she found Darcy’s phone on the floor of the first butterfly house, The door was left open and it housed exotic butterflies and some were now gone. But Darcy would not have left the door open . Claire said she would be there as soon as she could. Darcy worked part time at the butterfly farm. Claire asked Kris if she would watch the kids until she got a hold of her nanny. Claire felt something was very wrong. Jaci was Claire’s ex and Lexi’s dad. He was Mitch’s best friend and Mitch was engaged to Kris. Mitch and jace were pilots who went into storms to gather helpful information. Darcy had been Claire’s mainstay when their salesman father deserted them and their mother had retreated into her books and never left the house. Both Claire and Nick had called a contact they had in the PD-Ken Jensen - he came out to the butterfly farm. He had worked with missing people before. Nick knew he was going to have to call Darcy’s husband Steve. Claire was frightened for Darcy no woman’s intuition or forensic psychologist training, it was just a sisterly bond that had withstood so much over the years. At one time Lexi had been abducted and held captive. It had been terribly traumatic . Since than Lexi had slogged through mental and emotional turmoil. Could this loss and shock set her back? The nightmares had finally stopped . After being told about Darcy lexi ran back to hre room clearly distressed . Claire had the two girls together and she saw instantly Lexi was upset by how she reacted. Claire had made a mess of this. Now she had to help her daughter as well as her niece. Where is Darcy? Claire was laying in Lexi’s room with Jilly. She hoped to be able to ease off the bed if Jilly stopped crying and clinging. Darcy’s disappearance was the worst but Jilly’s fragile state and lexi slipping back into her unhealthy reliance on a imaginary friend going through an old doll was very painful. Claire had been taken also and held against her will. Steve arrived and he was a mess he wanted to find darcy and NOW! He was scared to death.
I really enjoyed this book. It had mystery, murder, manslaughter, sisters, am abduction, kidnapping, experimentation, butterflies, dolphins, intrigue, a hurricane, storm chasers, pilots, and so much more. I liked the plot as well as the subplots. It did drag a little at times. I loved how loyal Claire was to Darcy. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I recommend it.

The elevator pitch:

Claire tries to catch in her net, the person who kidnapped or killed her sister, along with some precious exotic butterflies.

Read/Skip:

Read if you like cozy mysteries. Otherwise skip.

Dark Storm is the final chapter in a six-part series, and unfortunately, this was only the first one I read. Regardless, it was easy to understand, but I kept wondering about the other installments, and the mysteries preceding the finale. They seemed intriguing, and I like to wade in carefully and not jump in at once at the deep end.
I thought this would be right up, my ally. All the Florida based thrillers I read lately were phenomenal. Furthermore, the story revolves around butterflies—my first book as heavily influenced by these creatures, dolphins, who doesn't love dolphins and cryogenics. I had just listened to a hugely entertaining This American life episode about the subject.
Indeed a massive chunk of this book as very enjoyable. A little less entertaining was the fragility of the protagonist, for a forensic psychologist cried a bit too much. For a trained professional having had contact with criminals, she seemed lost and too vulnerable. I know I'm not the ideal reader for Dark Sky, it fits perfectly in the cozy mystery genre, and I'm sure if that's your jam, you'll curl up and devour this one in one sitting.

The Story:

Claire's sister, Darcy, goes missing from the butterfly sanctuary where she works. She left her phone and the door open and Claire, a forensic psychologist and her husband Nick, a criminal lawyer, immediately go into panic mode. But they have to keep their wits about them to find Darcy and unravel the strange tale that led to her disappearance.

Set in Naples Florida, “Dark Storm” the sixth novel in the "South Shore” series opens with the disappearance of forensic psychologist Claire Markwood’s sister as well as a rare species of butterfly. Afraid for her sister, Claire and her criminal lawyer husband Nick pursue clues that lead them to the “protect- the-butterflies group” Fly Safe; a librarian known for his avid interest in the rare butterflies that are missing; and a fisherman accused of killing a dolphin. As their troubles mount a storm brews that has the community battening down their homes against a hurricane.

Riveting as the plot progresses, intensity and suspense escalate with an interactive doll that Claire’s daughter is given to calm the traumatic impact of Darcy’s disappearance, a sudden death and a storm that has her ex-husband Jace Britten and his friend Mitch Blackwood flying into. With twists as old family secrets are exposed, the story moves swiftly to a surprising ending.

Included among the compelling and realistic characters that help build emotional tension and mystery are the impulsive and shrewd Claire Markwood who’s haunted by the past and suffers from narcolepsy; her smart, supportive and loving husband Nick; her distressed, imaginative but clever daughter Lexi; the rugged, daring hurricane hunters Mitch Blackwood and Jace Britten; and the staid but deceptive librarian/writer Will Warren.

Well-written and intriguing “Dark Storm” keeps you captivated until the mystery is solved. I enjoyed it and intend to read other books in this series.

Claire Markwood receives a call from her sister’s employer, stating that Darcy disappeared from her job, leaving no message. Darcy works at a butterfly sanctuary, and certain rare butterflies have gone missing, as well. When days pass, with no trace of Darcy, dread sets in, as family and friends begin to suspect the worst case scenario. Even Darcy’s husband, who was out of town at the time she disappeared, falls under scrutiny.

A week later, Darcy suddenly reappears at Claire’s house, believing it’s still the day she disappeared, and having no memory of the intervening week. Claire and her husband, Nick, investigate and are taken on a wild path which leads them to the lucrative world of cryogenics. All this is happening against the backdrop of a hurricane, plane trouble, a woman in labor trapped by the storm, and a creepy doll which seems to have a mind of its own.

I came into this South Shores series at book number six, but was able to enjoy without having read the previous books. There is a whole circle of friends and relations, who have obviously had their stories told in previous books, but the author provided brief snippets which allowed me to get a feel of how everyone fit together without feeling lost. DARK STORM is a captivating thriller with a whole lot happening. It moves along at a fast pace, and will be a satisfying read for fans of contemporary suspense.

Dark Storm
by Karen Harper
Harlequin - MIRA

First let me say I love this author and have enjoyed a few of her book in the past but not one from the series.
This is book six in the South Shores books you loose a lot of you have not read the books before this one. I feel if I had read there prior book I would have thoroughly enjoyed this book.
You are bombarded with characters in the first chapter that you would have known if you had read the other books. **Again let me say if you have read the prior 5 books in the series then you will enjoy this book.

Claire finds her sister Darcy gone. Also the butterfly sanctuary where Darcy was working and last seen has the door ajar and her cell phone was found on the ground. Darcy's car is also missing PD Jensen is called to look into matters. Claire went through her own trama when her little Lexi was taken which must have happened in prior books in the series.
I'm leaving 4 stars because if I had read the other books I think this book would have been a good book to read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin - MIRA for a ARC of this book for my honest opinion. Please accept my apologies my computer was down for some time.

This was a first time author for me and DARK STORM is part of a series which I hadn’t been following. So with that in mind, I can tell you that this book can be read as a stand alone but with understanding that as you read there are references to past events that clue you in to that fact.

Evidently, forensic psychologist Claire Markwood has experienced her share of adventures, but she was not prepared for her sister, Darcy, going missing. Claire rushed to the butterfly sanctuary where Darcy had been working, prepared to do what she does best--work the clues. But her sister, along with her car and some of the sanctuary's rarest species of butterflies, has seemingly vanished without a trace.

Working the clues Claire and her criminal lawyer husband Nick uncover leads and secrets that turn out to be a bit unsettling to say the least. Some of which were real twists of their family history. Along with the search for her sister Darcy Claire was also worried that the trauma her daughter had experienced a year before was beginning to do another emotional set-back to her fragile daughters psyche.

What you will find in this stellar read is a roller coaster of emotions as the clues lead Claire to one of the most surprising and edge of the cliff endings.

An interesting story with many moving parts that come together in a clever and unique way at the end.

Missing butterflies, a kissing sister, a death of a dolphin, and a hurricane all sound like different story lines, but somehow they are woven together with the final result being a creative mystery. None of the connections were overly shocking, in fact some of the guilty characters were obvious, but the delivery of their actions and the depth of who all was involved kept me working to solve the mystery until the end.

There were some parts that I did not understand why the book spent such time in, such as the hurricane pilots, but I do wonder if it had anything to do with previous books in this series. This is the sixth book, but the first I have read. You can read this book and follow along easily, but I also plan on going back and reading the first six because I think it will make Claire’s penchant for finding disaster and the overall relationships more complete for me and this story.

I enjoy this story and thank you NetGalley, MIRA and Karen Harper for the chance to read this book and share my opinion.

In Karen Harper’s latest South Shores Series installment, Dark Storm, (MIRA) a forensic psychologist Claire Markwood and her husband, criminal lawyer Nick, are on a harrowing, very personal adventure. This time, Claire’s younger sister Darcy goes missing, but when Claire heads to the butterfly sanctuary in southern Florida where Darcy works, she finds no trace of Darcy—it’s as though the woman simply vanished. What dark, hidden family secrets are at work here? And can Claire and Nick find Darcy before it’s too late?

Darcy’s disappearance is especially hard for Claire. Claire’s father deserted the family when the girls were young, so the sisters had to rely on one another, and, as a result, they grew particularly close. But the family misfortune affected more than Claire’s relationship with Darcy. It also impacted the person Claire is today, including the strength and resourcefulness she demonstrates when solving crimes.
