This is the complete book of practical guidance and inspiration on every aspect of family life. The Catholic Family Handbook provides wise, inspirational guidance for every Catholic parent. It offers sound, practical suggestions for developing the spiritual, intellectual and emotional qualities you want for your children. Here you will find answers to the many questions which arise at every stage of their growth from birth to marriage.
In a frank, easy-to-read style, Father Kelly outlines a specific program to enable you to give the moral and emotional training needed for a happy childhood and adulthood. You will obtain invaluable advice on how to develop your children's character and sense of responsibility in every step of their growing-up process. One comprehensive chapter is devoted to sex attitudes, with a practical timetable for sex education. Father Kelly covers such matters as sex experimentation, lying and stealing, the use of "dirty words," disobedience and masturbation. There are also helpful suggestion as to how you can help your children in their school work and in preparing for college; how to help them form good dating habits and how to make a good marriage; how to help them choose suitable careers.
Other chapters are devoted to family problems when the mother works, when one parent is dead or absent, when a child suffers from an exceptional physical or mental abnormality, when a child is adopted or unusually gifted. The "teen-age crisis" is examined in detail. A chapter on religious practices in the home describes how your observances of Christmas, Easter and other religious feasts can tie your family more closely together and provide memories which will last throughout your children't lives.
Catholic parents will find inspiration, information and down-to-earth advice in this volume by the Director of Family Life Bureau of the Archdiocese of New York and author of the widely hailed Catholic Marriage Manual. This is a book with lasting qualities - one which can be read and referred to constantly throughout all the years of your children's growth. (Taken from inside front cover of dust jacket.)
Excellent book. Parenting advice from a good, solid, Catholic perspective. The author gives lots of concrete examples of children's behaviors, and then corresponding ways to handle those situations. I admit that I read pieces over the course of several months (and I skipped the parts that pertained to teenagers), but it was very insightful and beneficial to read.
This is another gem for the Catholic family. Written in the 50’s it is full of common sense on dealing with the issues of family life from “modern” entertainment (to which you can apply his principles to what we have now!) to teenagers. Highly recommend!
